Nearshore cable pull-in operations: Are we focusing enough on stored energy? One of the greatest risks during nearshore cable pull-in isn't the necessarily the cable itself, it's more about the amount of stored mechanical energy within the pulling system, winch wires etc. As cable tension, buoyancy and friction change throughout the operation, so do the forces acting on winches and connections. If a component fails, that stored energy can be released instantly with catastrophic consequences. (we have all seen the videos!) Strong safety performance isn't just about robust equipment, it's about maintaining effective Line of Fire controls, adapting exclusion zones as conditions change, and ensuring everyone understands where the energy is being transferred. A simple question can make all the difference: "If this fails right now, where would the energy go?" Cypress In-Line Inspection, LLC (“Cypress”) and its predecessors have been working for over thirty years developing its proprietary pipeline condition assessment magnetic flux leakage detection (“MFL”) tools and software to inspect pipelines. MFL is a method of nondestructive evaluation (“NDE”) to inspect pipelines. Cypress offers best in class ultra-high resolution MFL tools for traditional energy pipelines, and we offer the unique capability to inspect large diameter (48” and greater) mortar-lined water pipelines. Some refer to this as “Smart Pigging” which has been widely used in unlined steel pipelines in the petroleum, petroleum products, natural gas and liquefied gas transportation industry since the mid 1960's. MFL inspection is the correlation of changes in a magnetic field caused by pipeline defects to the dimensions of the defect. #Cypress #MFL

Good wireline planning is about understanding the risk clearly enough to avoid unnecessary operational cost. For this Gulf of America operation, Gaia was involved from the beginning. Both wells were modelled in advance so the team could understand where the higher-risk intervals existed before logging operations began. The first well experienced some minor sticking, but the operation remained under control. The second well carried significantly higher risk and likely would have required pipe-conveyed logging without the upfront planning and deployment strategy. Instead, both runs were completed successfully on wireline.
