How do we ensure design remains grounded in the physical as digital tools continue to evolve? For our latest Fireside Chat, we were joined by designer, maker and Director of The Workshop Foundation, Graham Russell, who shared reflections on a career spanning furniture, interiors and product design, and the role of craftsmanship, prototyping and making in the creative process. Drawing on decades of experience, the conversation explored why physical prototypes remain an essential part of developing ideas — helping designers test materials, refine details and solve problems that can’t always be resolved on screen. We also discussed how emerging technologies are reshaping the industry and why the future of design lies not in replacing craftsmanship, but in strengthening the relationship between digital tools and the act of making. A key takeaway: however advanced our tools become, great design still depends on our ability to experiment, make and translate ideas into the physical world.
