Meet Brad Walling, Sr. Packaging Design Manager, whose team is redefining sustainable packaging that does more with less while delivering customer delight.

Why did you choose Amazon?

As a customer, I noticed the evolution of packaging arriving at my doorstep. As someone building a vinyl record collection, I was impressed by Amazon's deliberate shift to right-sized, purpose-built corrugated mailers with easy-open features—a significant upgrade from records tossed in oversized boxes with air pillows.  The Sr. Packaging Design Manager role presented an incredible opportunity to influence even more sustainable packaging choices at scale, leveraging my 20+ years of experience from the packaging supply side of the business.

Can you tell us about your background and how you got started in the tech industry?

Since elementary school, I've always enjoyed fixing things starting with a drink carrier for sodas for my bike. My degree in Packaging Science blends science (how things work) with business (why it matters). After graduating, I initially wanted to work for a consumer products company but quickly realized the supply side offered broader exposure—working on invention and problem-solving for everyday brands across Food, Beverage, Healthcare, and Personal Care.I never imagined working for a tech company like Amazon until I realized my background in packaging design and innovation could directly support the launch of new, sustainable package formats. It's been the perfect intersection of my skills and passion for innovation with the pace and customer obsession of Amazon.

What is something you have done that you would consider innovative or pioneering at Amazon so far?

The rapid collaboration on new packaging solutions for our Drones program has been incredibly exciting. From my experience, finding an Amazon package on your porch feels like receiving a gift. Having that delivery experience drop from the sky to your backyard in under an hour takes that moment of delight to another level!

What is your favorite leadership principle and why?

Customer Obsession. Everything comes back to the end customer, and working backwards from that experience provides tremendous clarity as we develop packaging that brings moments of delight. Part of my team's role is listening closely to customer feedback, and one universal truth stands out: optimize package size to match contents. We're working to eliminate those frustrating moments of receiving a small item in an oversized box.

How do you stay up to date with the latest technologies and what strategies do you use to keep your skills sharp?

Amazon offers an abundance of state-of-the-art software and AI tools. Integrating AI into everyday work has made me more productive, allowing me to focus on higher-value decision-making. Almost every week, I discover a new AI tool that boosts productivity. A recent example is KIRO, which helps develop quick visual renderings of package concepts.

How do you foster a culture of innovation and creativity within your team and what techniques do you use to encourage experimentation and risk taking?

I've been impressed with Amazon's culture of two-way door decisions. The expectation is to be nimble and fast-moving—try things out, learn quickly, and make iterative improvements. A former colleague used the term "speed-ovation" as a differentiator, and Amazon's culture truly reinforces that pace. There's no shortage of impactful problems to solve at scale, and the faster we drive solutions, the faster we can make a meaningful impact.
