Houston Methodist Launches a Systemwide AI Initiative to Enhance Imaging Efficiency, Accelerate Emergency Response and Strengthen Care Coordination
Houston Methodist is entering a new era of imaging innovation with the rollout of a suite of AI‑powered tools designed to support radiologists, accelerate emergency care and streamline patient follow‑up. The specific tool, called Aidoc , automatically flags potential issues and displays a visual heat map to help guide radiologists’ attention.
“We’re already seeing very positive returns after just a couple of days,” said Ginny Torno , Sr. Director of Information Technology and Innovation, who is leading the implementation. “This project really started our journey toward future-proofing our organization and making our imaging operations more efficient as a whole.”
Radiology goes first: intelligent prioritization and visual insights
The first phase of the rollout focuses on radiology, with 18 “super users” beginning testing of the platform and expansion to roughly 100 radiologists in June.
When a significant concern is identified, exams can be prioritized to the top of the radiologist’s worklist, enabling faster review.
Initially skeptical, radiologists are quickly adopting the tool and learning how it can help them.
“One radiologist said, ‘This is a great tool. We can’t wait until they have more algorithms to check,” Torno said.
Additional capabilities are expected soon, with new FDA-approved algorithms expanding the system’s reach as part of the organization’s broader licensing agreement.
Behind the scenes: intelligent image routing
To support these new workflows, Houston Methodist implemented an advanced image routing system that automatically delivers the appropriate studies for analysis — without requiring extra steps from radiologists.
“Technologists don’t do anything to make it route correctly. All of the logic is built in the router and can be easily managed over time as we add and change imaging procedures.”
This infrastructure upgrade represents a major milestone, enabling intelligent image routing across the enterprise — something previously not possible without manually configuring each scanner.
Next up: mobile tools for stroke and pulmonary embolism
The second phase of the initiative introduces mobile tools for stroke and pulmonary embolism (PE) care teams. These applications will alert physicians and nurses in real time when imaging suggests a potential emergency.
Clinicians can quickly view images on their mobile devices (optimized for triage rather than diagnosis) and activate response teams immediately.
“We do have a stroke app already that we’re going to replace, but we don’t have anything for PE,” Torno said. “The customers who have it say it makes a huge difference, so we’re really looking forward to that.”
The mobile rollout is planned for this summer.
A third component: intelligent patient management
Later this year, Houston Methodist will introduce a patient management tool that scans electronic health record data to help identify potential follow-up needs — such as referrals documented in physician notes — and ensure they are not missed.
This capability will primarily support nurse coordinators, helping to close care gaps and improve continuity across the patient journey.
A strategic platform for growth
Houston Methodist selected this platform for its comprehensive approach and scalability, allowing the organization to expand capabilities over time without significant rework.
“To us, it’s a huge benefit,” Torno said. “We’ve picked a platform that will continue to grow without us having to rebuild or reconnect anything.”
The technology is already in use at more than 100 hospitals nationwide.
Accuracy, limitations and continuous improvement
Like all AI-supported tools, the system is not perfect. Torno emphasized that the vendor is transparent about these limitations and continually improves performance based on real-world feedback.
“It’s not perfect, but they’re upfront about that,” she noted. “Every time they get feedback, they make a change.”
A systemwide initiative with systemwide impact
Across all three components — radiology, emergency response and patient management — the goals are clear:
“We’re excited to begin this journey,” Torno said. “It will just continue to grow from here.”
