How protective coatings can improve environmental efficiency in data centers

As demand for digital services continues to grow, data centers have become critical infrastructure for businesses and consumers worldwide. As performance demands also increase, durable infrastructure is essential. Protective coatings can play an important, yet often overlooked, role in maintaining long-term reliability.

“High performance coatings developed specifically for digital infrastructure can help reduce energy consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, extend the lifespan of critical assets and result in lower maintenance and replacement needs,” said Anurag Raj, PPG’s customer sustainability business partner, Protective and Marine Coatings.

Protective coatings help safeguard structural components and critical equipment from corrosion, fire, environmental stressors and long-term wear.

Coatings can also contribute to greater energy efficiency. Thermally insulating coatings can help reduce heat transfer, while reflective coatings can minimize heat gain on building exteriors. Together, these technologies can help reduce demands on cooling systems, which account for a significant share of data center energy consumption. Low-VOC coatings can further support environmental goals by reducing emissions associated with maintenance activities.

“Some of these avoided impacts, due to reduced maintenance and replacement needs, are not immediately apparent but increase the expected operating life of assets,” Raj said.

As data center capacity continues to expand, operators will need solutions that support both performance and sustainability. Advances in coating technologies are creating new opportunities to improve asset protection, enhance energy efficiency and support long-term environmental goals.

“With an increase in sustainability reporting expectations from digital infrastructure owners and operators, coatings are expected to play a larger role by providing measurable benefits related to emissions reduction, energy savings, asset longevity and lifecycle performance,” Raj said. “As a result, coatings will help data centers achieve improved resilience, lower operating costs and stronger environmental performance while supporting continued industry growth.”

By incorporating protective coatings into facility design, operations and maintenance strategies, data center operators can strengthen facility performance and support a more sustainable digital infrastructure.

As data centers become increasingly critical infrastructure, sustainability has to be considered across the entire asset lifecycle—not just through energy efficiency. Extending the lifespan of equipment and facilities, reducing maintenance requirements, and improving resilience are all strategic decisions that can lower costs while supporting long-term environmental goals. It's encouraging to see more attention being given to these often-overlooked aspects of sustainable infrastructure.
