Interoperability in the Spotlight - how Different Standards Compare


As Industry 4.0 evolves, one of its key aspirations is to cut integration costs when introducing new data players in enterprises. Standards such as "OPC UA" and "MQTT" have been spotlighted as potential solutions. However, just using these standards doesn't necessarily lead to interoperability. The widely-accepted TCP Model, while facilitating global connectivity, is vague on specific communication protocols and encodings. Its focus is mainly on the Application Layer.

Contrarily, the Data Access Model offers a more in-depth look. It merges network components into a single Transport Layer and categorizes the application part into six detailed layers. How compatible these layers are with each other becomes the measure of interoperability.


MQTT, established in 1999, gained fame for its ability to efficiently disseminate data in bandwidth-constrained scenarios. Its relevance skyrocketed around 2011 when IT giants realized its scalability potential, propelling it into mainstream tech applications. On the other side, the OPC Foundation launched the OPC UA specification in 2006, which revamped connectivity features and was adopted widely. While the OPC Foundation continuously strived for interoperability, the intricate array of specifications at each layer can be challenging.

For "MQTT", the challenges stem from its ambiguous data stack, complicating integration tasks for engineers. Meanwhile, OPC UA, despite its comprehensive standardization, presents a maze of customizations that can hinder true integration.

In essence, genuine interoperability can't be achieved by simply banking on "OPC UA" or "MQTT" as magic bullets. The current scenario in the data access realm is eerily reminiscent of past protocol battles. A well-defined structure in the Data Access Model is crucial. Without it, OEMs may produce mismatched solutions, and end-users might find themselves navigating a complex tech labyrinth.

Just because two machines “speak” OPC UA doesn’t mean they can cooperate straight out of the box. In 99% of the cases, additional efforts are necessary to achieve interoperability, entailing the elaboration and determination of the requisite details for each specific case, which can be very labor-intensive.
