Mid-Year Reset: Cybersecurity Hygiene Tips to Keep Your Small Business Safe This Summer

As the heat turns up and the pace slows down, summer is the perfect time for small business owners to hit pause, refresh their systems, and make sure their cybersecurity practices are as strong as ever.

We’re halfway through the year—and cybercriminals haven’t taken a vacation. With increased travel, more remote work, and digital distractions, the summer months are prime time for phishing attacks, data breaches, and system vulnerabilities. Let’s make sure your business doesn’t take the bait.

Here are 5 simple cybersecurity hygiene practices you can put into action this July:

1. Refresh All Passwords—Yes, All of Them

Use strong, unique passwords for every system and account—especially your email, banking, payroll, and file storage platforms. Consider implementing a password manager to keep things organized and secure.

🔐 Bonus Tip: Adopt passphrases that are easy to remember but hard to guess (e.g., “SunsetsLoveCoffee@2025!”).

2. Turn On Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

MFA adds an extra layer of protection beyond just your password. Require it for all users accessing sensitive systems—especially remote workers or vendors.

📱 Whether it’s a code sent to your phone or a biometric prompt, MFA can block over 90% of common cyberattacks.

3. Patch, Update, and Automate

Outdated software is a hacker’s playground. Ensure all your systems—OS, software, antivirus, and firewalls—are fully updated.

🛠️ Set up automatic updates where possible, and audit any tools you haven’t used in a while. If you’re not using it, uninstall it.

4. Train Your Team—Summer Edition

Employees are your first line of defense. A quick 15-minute refresher on spotting phishing emails, suspicious links, and social engineering attacks can go a long way.

💡 Schedule a “Cyber Clean-Up Week” or host a lunch-and-learn to review key threats and safe practices.

5. Back It Up. Then Back It Up Again.

Whether it’s a ransomware attack or a storm-induced power outage, having secure, off-site backups ensures you can recover quickly.

💾 Make sure you test your backup and recovery process regularly. Backups should be automatic and include all critical business data.

☀️ A Secure Summer Starts Now

Cybersecurity doesn’t take summers off—and neither should your defenses. These quick, proactive steps can prevent major headaches down the line. Whether you’re running a storefront, consulting business, or remote agency, a little mid-year maintenance will keep your digital doors locked tight.

Make cybersecurity part of your monthly business routine—and watch your peace of mind grow as fast as the summer days.
