The Rise of Paper Packaging in Quick Commerce
The 10-minute delivery promise didn’t just change how India shops. It also quietly changed what India ships in.
For most of quick commerce's early growth, the packaging conversation was secondary. Speed was the differentiator. The bag was an afterthought. That has started to shift, and the reasons are more structural than environmental.
Why Quick-Commerce Operators Are Moving Away from Plastic
The pressure is regulatory and operational, in roughly equal measure.
Extended Producer Responsibility norms under India's Plastic Waste Management Rules have made single-use plastic packaging a compliance liability for large-format retailers and their vendor networks. Blinkit, Zepto, and Instamart are not small operations. Their vendor base runs into hundreds of thousands of sellers. Plastic-to-paper migration at that scale is not a CSR decision. It is a supply chain decision.
The operational logic reinforces it. Paper bags are lighter, easier to source regionally, and increasingly cost-competitive at volume. For the average dark store vendor replenishing stock multiple times a week, a reliable paper supplier is as operationally significant as a reliable cold-chain partner.
What Makes a Good Carry Bag Paper
Not all kraft paper is suitable for carry bags, and the gap between adequate and appropriate is meaningful to anyone who has had a bag fail mid-delivery.
Four properties determine whether a paper performs in this application.
Tear strength A carry bag in quick commerce takes real mechanical stress: it is filled quickly, carried at speed, and sometimes loaded beyond its nominal weight. Papers with insufficient tear resistance fail at the handle or at stress points near the base. The measurement that matters here is internal tear resistance, tested under TAPPI or BIS standards, not surface appearance.
Printability Vendor branding on carry bags is a secondary but real commercial requirement. Paper with uneven surface sizing or excessive porosity produces inconsistent print results, which matters to vendors running branded packaging at scale.
Sustainability credentials MG Kraft Paper, produced from virgin pulp, carries a cleaner lifecycle claim than recycled alternatives and is accepted by most sustainability audits covering retail supply chains. This is increasingly a procurement condition, not merely a preference.
Cost consistency Commodity pricing in kraft paper is real, but batch-to-batch consistency in quality is what actually determines the total cost of ownership. A cheaper paper that fails at a higher rate is not cheaper at scale.
MF Kraft Paper: Why It Has Become the Preferred Input
Machine-finished Kraft Paper is the dominant substrate in this application for a reason that has nothing to do with marketing.

The MF manufacturing process produces a surface that is consistent in finish, dimensionally stable under tension, and uniform in weight across the reel. For a bag manufacturer converting at speed, that consistency is not a quality argument. It is a production argument. Variability in the input paper means variability in the converted output, which means waste, rework, and delivery delays.
The grades relevant to quick-commerce carry bags run from 120 to 180 GSM, with a Burst Factor of 18 BF. For this application, the lower end of that range delivers the structural performance the job demands without adding unnecessary material cost. The Burst Factor specification is worth noting: it is the parameter that most directly corresponds to the mechanical stress a bag takes at the handle and base during high-speed fulfilment.
What the buyer community has found is that the grade choice is less important than the quality of execution within the grade. A well-manufactured 120 GSM MF Kraft will outperform a poorly executed 150 GSM every time. The specification matters. The consistency of delivery against that specification matters more.
SBPPL's Position in This Supply Chain
Shree Bhageshwari Paper Pvt. Ltd. manufactures MF Kraft Paper across two variants within the 120 to 180 GSM range.
Semi Kraft in Natural Brown is suited to basic printing requirements, which cover most functional packaging needs across paper bags, wrapping, carton box liners, and corrugated board making.
Kraft Paper Golden Yellow carries a surface specification suitable for branding and logo printing, which is the relevant input for vendors running premium carry bags, e-commerce packaging, or high-end product presentation. The choice of variant is a sourcing decision, not an aesthetic one.
Across both variants, the manufacturing depth covers the functional parameters that determine whether a paper converts well: burst factor, surface finish, moisture content at delivery, and dimensional stability under standard converting conditions.
Pan-India supply capability is operationally significant in this category. Quick-commerce vendor networks are geographically distributed. A supplier who can fulfil across regions without compromising batch consistency reduces the procurement complexity that most buyers would rather not manage.
The Bigger Picture: Paper and India's Packaging Transition
India generates approximately 3.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually. The packaging sector is among the largest contributors. The regulatory direction is clear and the timeline is compressing. Quick commerce, because of its scale and its vendor density, is one of the more visible pressure points in the transition.
Paper is not a perfect substitute. It has its own production footprint, its own sourcing constraints, its own performance limits in wet or high-humidity conditions. But in the ambient carry bag application that dominates quick-commerce delivery, it performs, it complies, and it converts cleanly into the kind of supply chain decision that procurement managers can defend to every stakeholder in the room.
The companies positioning themselves as reliable paper suppliers to this segment now are not simply responding to a trend. They are building the infrastructure of a transition that has no realistic reversal.
