State Insurance Reform Is Moving. Slowly, But It's Moving.

State dental insurance reform legislation is gaining traction across multiple 2026 legislative sessions. Reforms targeting patient protections and administrative burden reduction for dentists represent a meaningful, if incremental, shift. The ADA and state dental associations have invested years in building this legislative groundwork, and the returns are beginning to materialize.

For practicing dentists the practical upside of insurance form is meaningful. We may see fewer prior authorization walls, clearer claims processes, and stronger patient rights language in coverage disputes.

What's important to note is that while the process is slow, it appears that dentistry's legislative infrastructure is maturing and the profession is no longer purely reactive to payer decisions which is good progress.

The volume of leadership news out of dental schools this week is notable. UTHealth Houston has named Renato M. Silva as its new dean. The University of Minnesota has appointed a new Assistant Dean for Admissions. The University of Maryland announced Dr. Gary Warburton will begin serving as their interim dean on August 1st.
