The Health, Medicine & Society Program of the Aspen Institute brings together influential groups of thought leaders, decisionmakers, and the informed public to consider 21st-century health challenges in the U.S. and around the world and to identify practical solutions for addressing them. At the heart of most of our activities is a package of research, convenings, and publications that spans a range of timely topics and supports policymakers, scholars, and other stakeholders in their commitment to better health for all. A rigorously nonpartisan program, HMS believes in evidence-based medicine and science, and the power of truth, and pursues its work accordingly.

Last week, the Aspen Health Strategy Group concluded their 2026 convening discussing an important topic in the US: food and health. Ardmore Institute of Health is providing support for this initiative, recognizing the critical need to inform policymakers who can act on the recommendations AHSG will develop. Building on expert input, survey data, and in-depth conversations from this convening in Aspen, Colorado, AHSG will publish a report that highlights “five big ideas” to help guide the US towards better health through effective food policy. In addition to Ardmore Institute of Health, grant funds from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund support this initiative. Congratulations to the 2026 Renée Fleming Neuroarts Investigator Awards recipients! From music to movement to storytelling and filmmaking, these 10 teams of artists and early career researchers are receiving grants to support unique and innovative research projects looking at diverse art forms and scientific disciplines to address significant health and wellbeing issues. Established by Renée Fleming, acclaimed soprano, through her Foundation in 2024, the awards program is administered through the NeuroArts Blueprint Initiative, a partnership between The Johns Hopkins University and The Aspen Institute. To date, the program has funded 26 research teams conducting interdisciplinary research projects with unique methods whose results are making important contributions to the growing body of scientific evidence underpinning the field of neuroarts. This third cohort of recipients was selected by our expert review committee co-chaired by Eric J. Nestler, MD, PhD, renowned neuroscientist, and Jewel, 4-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and visual artist. HMS’s latest initiative brings together national leaders and community voices to establish a new standard for optimal — and equitable — maternal health outcomes. Designed around the experiences and needs of families most affected by disparities, the initiative recognizes that optimal perinatal care extends far beyond medical services alone. It will integrate lived experience and community wisdom alongside clinical and non-clinical systems — including mental health, economic stability, and community support — to build a standard of care that works for every community. Co-chaired by Dr. Nadine Burke Harris and Dr. Jonathan Perlin, this work is made possible through the partnership and support of The David and Lucile Packard Foundation and other generous funders. We are honored to be working with such thought leaders in this effort.

About 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable, and most of them occur in the weeks and months after delivery. Ascend at the Aspen Institute and the Aspen Institute Health, Medicine & Society Program recently launched the Perinatal Standard of Care Project—a national initiative to develop the first comprehensive standard of care for pregnancy through 12 months postpartum. This initiative will bring together clinical leaders, community voices, policy experts, and moms to reimagine what high-quality, equitable perinatal care can and should look like. A new report from the Aspen Institute Health, Medicine & Society Program outlines five ideas to close the health gap facing rural Americans, including letting rural communities lead, updating payment systems, investing in prevention, and modernizing infrastructure. The growing health divide between rural and urban America emerged only a few decades ago. In fact, for much of the U.S.'s history, rural populations were healthier than their urban counterparts. The relative recency of this shift is reason to believe that it can be reversed. We support efforts to increase access to healthcare and address this health disparity, which affects the 50 million Americans who live in rural areas. This year, The Aspen Institute's Health Strategy Group’s 10th annual report, funded in part by Helmsley, focuses on rural health. Following Aspen Institute's convening of senior leaders in health, business, philanthropy, and technology, the resulting report compiled five major recommendations for meeting the health needs of rural America: https://bit.ly/4acJ2aE

The The Aspen Institute Health Strategy Group has released a new report: Meeting the Health Needs of Rural America. Nearly 20% of Americans live in rural communities, yet they face higher mortality rates, greater prevalence of chronic conditions, and increasing financial strain related to medical care. As co-chair of AHSG alongside Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, I’m proud of the bipartisan, cross-sector collaboration behind this report. Twenty-one senior leaders came together to identify five big ideas to narrow the rural health gap: • Let rural communities lead • Update payment systems to support rural providers • Build economic development around healthcare • Invest in prevention and population health • Modernize rural infrastructure Rural health and rural economic vitality are deeply interconnected.
