Happy #Metrology Friday! This week's application note is "Study on Structure-Property Relationship of Electroplated Cu Film by Combining Electron Backscatter Diffraction (#EBSD) and High-Speed #Nanoindentation Techniques". In this work, NanoBlitz 3D was used to map the local hardness of an electroplated Cu, where localized measurement revealed important spatial variations in mechancial properties. Benchtop and Automated Metrology Solutions: for Labs & Fabs Stylus and Optical Profilers, Nanoindenters, Film Thickness
About us
The Instruments group at KLA offers a large portfolio of stylus and optical profilometers, nanoindenters, thin film reflectometers and sheet resistance measurement tools. www.kla.com/instruments KLA Instruments' line of optical and stylus profilers offer a complete range of surface metrology capabilities for engineering and research communities. Our benchtop and automated profilers are designed to measure step height, film thickness, form, texture and automated defect inspection. We also offer high-throughput nanomechanical testers for material characterization. With flexible add-on and upgrade options, our nanoindenter systems can be used to measure and map hardness, Young’s modulus, adhesion, stress-strain and more. Our affordable UV to NIR spectrometer systems measure thin film thickness from 1nm to 13mm, optical constants, and deposition rates of thin films. The KLA Instruments community mourns the loss of Dr. Warren C. Oliver - an extraordinary scientist, inventor, mentor, and colleague whose contributions helped define the field of nanoindentation and advance materials science around the world. Warren was a pioneering force behind instrumented nanoindentation and co-developer of the landmark Oliver-Pharr Method, a breakthrough that remains the foundation of modern mechanical characterization more than three decades after its publication. His work enabled researchers to measure material properties with unprecedented precision and continues to impact fields ranging from semiconductors and advanced materials to energy storage and biomedical research. Throughout his time with KLA Instruments and the companies/products that became part of our organization, Warren brought an unwavering passion for innovation, scientific rigor, and collaboration. He was not only a renowned technical leader and member of the National Academy of Engineering, but also a trusted mentor who inspired colleagues, customers, researchers, and students worldwide. His legacy lives on in the technologies he helped create, the scientific community he helped shape, and the countless people whose careers and discoveries were influenced by his work. On behalf of KLA Instruments leadership, we extend our deepest condolences to Warren’s family, friends, colleagues, and the global materials science community. Thank you, Warren. Your impact will be felt for generations to come. https://lnkd.in/gCV2q7Xw

Happy #Metrology Friday! We have something a little different for you this week: "Tribology of Dental Enamel: Effect of Etching". Acid etching of dental enamel is a standard practice to ensure good bonding between resins and dental enamel during many clinical procedures on teeth. This process creates a rough surface to enhance mechanical bonding and wettability of the resin. However, the enamel surface becomes weaker after etching, and care needs to be taken to minimize any mechanical damage during the clinical procedure. In this study, we characterize the nano/micro-scale friction and wear behavior of the dental enamel – pre- and post-etching – using the KLA Instruments™ Nano Indenter® G200. Congratulations to Marcel S. and researchers from Technische Universität Darmstadt for their latest work using a KLA Instruments in situ #nanoindenter mounted inside a SEM.
🎉 Published in the Journal of The American Ceramic Society: "Thermally Activated Deformation Mechanisms in MgO Investigated via High Temperature Scanning Indentation" Using HTSI, we tracked hardness, strain rate sensitivity, and activation volume of single-crystalline MgO quasi-continuously from RT to 800 °C — one indent every 3 °C. The results pinpoint the transitions from kink-pair to obstacle-controlled deformation (240 °C) and to long-range dislocation interactions (675 °C). This demonstrates the power of modern nanoindentation methods for characterizing ductile ceramics and paves the way for probing dislocation-engineered materials locally. Congratulations to Marcel S. on his first-author paper, and thanks to Oliver Preuß and Karsten Durst for the great collaboration. 📄 Open Access: https://lnkd.in/emytdFAF #MaterialsScience #Ceramics #Nanoindentation #Dislocations
