Realign For Palestine

International headlines focus on ceasefires, diplomacy and regional politics. Inside Gaza, the conversation is more basic: water, electricity, food, medicine, jobs, shelter and safety. The latest Arab Barometer / PCPSR findings and our own monthly reporting document a population living through severe and layered deprivation: limited access to basic services, widespread food insecurity, irregular aid, major loss of income, disrupted education, and urgent health needs. Nine months since the ceasefire, the World Bank notes that a sustainable recovery has yet to begin, with Gaza’s productive sectors still largely paralysed and reconstruction needs estimated in the tens of billions. On the ground, recovery is measured in ordinary things that remain out of reach: clean water, medical care, income, school, safe access to aid, and homes and civic life that can be rebuilt. Political solutions that ignore daily life will not bring stability.

The total collapse of formal trade, commercial banking, and open border access in Gaza has created a vacuum rapidly filled by unregulated, predatory black markets rampant with hyper-inflation and price volatility. But the long-term, structural threat to Gaza’s self-determination lies in the gradual entrenchment of this war economy, with profiteers weaponizing scarcity and creating a de facto governing system. When survival requires reliance on illicit shadow markets, the remaining fabric of independent civil society is systematically eroded. Until the economy of scarcity is replaced by a transparent, functioning civil infrastructure and formal commerce, a peaceful and stable future will remain out of reach.

“To us the word “resistance” means that we want to become artists to tell our stories,” says Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib. He highlights a much-needed pivotal shift in defining resistance - reclaiming it as artistry of state building, rather than letting it be defined entirely by opposition to Israel. The true ethos of resistance lies in perseverance and development, not in jihadi suicidal nihilism. Reclaiming this constructive vision is vital if Gaza is to move away from destructive ideologies and build a sustainable future.

Is external opposition the sole reason the Palestinian people remain without a state, or is it finally time to examine decades of consistent leadership failures? From pan-Arabism to the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Palestinian national project has repeatedly been weaponized as a proxy for external ideologies, stripping away any sense of personal agency for Gazans.

Macro-political headlines frequently focus on geopolitical maneuvering and kinetic operations. But the day-to-day survival of Gaza relies on the civilian professionals holding the remaining fabric of society together. Amidst extreme deprivation, insecurity, and systemic collapse, Gazan women serve as the structural anchors of their communities. From medical students performing surgeries in bombarded hospitals, to journalists risking targeted attacks to preserve human stories, to displaced teachers setting up learning tents to protect the human capital of the next generation - these first-hand accounts demonstrate profound resilience. With an estimate of over 38,000 women killed, one million displaced, and nearly 800,000 facing catastrophic food insecurity, protecting and empowering these women is more than a humanitarian necessity. It is the baseline structural requirement for rebuilding any viable future for Gaza.

Defending Hamas’s “armed resistance” as a "natural expression” of the oppressed is both intellectually weak and strategically lazy. Refusing to critique internal actors under the false assumption that it weakens the broader cause only normalizes violence while failing to hold Palestinian “leadership” accountable.

Kariv is directly challenging the cynicism and destructive policies of the current Netanyahu government. Radical Pragmatism requires Israeli partners willing to commit to coexistence. A free Gaza and a secure Israel are not mutually exclusive.

What if supporting Palestine meant building bridges? As Boy George wrote, there is value in listening to Palestinians who are offering solutions rather than deepening divisions. Realign for Palestine was founded on the belief that support for Palestinian freedom can, and must, entail a rejection of violence, a commitment to coexistence, and a belief in a negotiated political solution.
