    For the past few months, I've been working with Spotify on this year's Culture Next report, and what has stood out to me most is how this new data challenges generalizations about Gen Z. The generation spans 15 years, and the youngest (still in high school) have virtually nothing in common with the oldest (young professionals thinking about marriage and maybe even real estate). A few findings I keep coming back to: → Gen Z is embracing long-form media as a counter to doomscrolling, fueling a boom in educational podcasts and audiobooks. → They're way less fickle than marketers give them credit for.High-schoolers are actually the most loyal cohort, returningritualistically to their "comfort creators." → Brazilian Funk, born in Rio's favelas in the '80s, has become one of the fastest-growing genres on the platform, boosted by gymcore and auramaxxing. I also filmed a fireside chat with Jenny Haggard, Spotify’s Global Head of Thought Leadership and the report's author, talking through what surprised us about young people today and what brands get wrong about reaching this generation.     🎶 Spotify has always had fun talking to advertisers, whether it’s the “Song for Every CMO” project or the spreadsheet-based “Spreadbeats” music videos for media buyers. Here’s the latest effort in that realm: “You’re Among Fans,” featuring singer Lizzo and podcast host Jay Shetty encouraging marketers to connect with fans on the platform. Created by BBDO New York, the campaign is built around the idea that Spotify users arrive with strong connections to the music and creators they follow, giving advertisers access to audiences who are already highly engaged. Instead of presenting audience data through a conventional marketing lens, though, the work calls on Lizzo and Shetty to explain the behaviors and habits of their followers. “Most audience briefings do their job and stay in the background. We thought our audience deserved a little more attention. The same kind of attention brands get when they talk to fans on Spotify,” said Richard Frankel, global creative director at Spotify. “So we put our audience briefings in the hands of people who understand fans better than anyone. Lizzo and Jay Shetty have built loyal audiences by being worth listening to. This campaign brings that connection into the briefing itself and gives media decision makers intel they can actually use.” The campaign arrives alongside news that Spotify and Netflix are expanding “On Purpose” into video programming across both platforms.     My team and I spend a lot of time talking about audiences, yet this year we’ve shifted our focus to fans. Fans bring a specific kind of attention to media. They’re more intentional, focused, and passionate. They actively choose what they’re listening to or watching, and being that present changes what it means for brands to show up in those moments.
