    Your Insurance Agency is Falling Behind Focusing solely on top-line revenue means you might be overlooking a significant opportunity: improving your margins. Margin is the revenue or commission you collect minus the expenses or costs incurred to produce and service accounts. Think of your agency like a factory: Parts: Data, applications, and supplementals. Assembly Line: The process of collecting and organizing information to produce the desired product. Product: Insurance policies. Like factories, agencies face bottlenecks and constraints: A bottleneck is a restriction in workflow caused by excessive demands on a specific process. Example: If a quote isn’t done right the first time, it must go back through the "assembly line" for corrections, delaying current work and creating a backlog. A constraint is the critical limiting factor that determines the maximum output of your system. Examples for agencies: Lack of training, outdated systems, or insufficient expertise. To achieve success, you must identify and address these bottlenecks and constraints. Often, the root problem isn’t what’s immediately obvious. For instance, if your quote turnaround time is slow, the issue may not lie with your quoting specialist or account manager but with a lack of systems and processes. Consider these questions: Do you have all the required information for the desired coverages? Do you know exactly what coverages the client needs? Are you submitting to the right markets? Is your submission complete and thorough? Have you anticipated additional underwriting questions? Did you set clear expectations with the client on timelines? Do you have a proposal template that ensures accuracy? Do you have a streamlined method to schedule a presentation call? Is it easy for the client to agree to the terms? Can the client pay for the policies without hassle? Each of these steps can potentially create bottlenecks, slowing down your process and delivering a poor customer experience. This, in turn, leads to lower conversion rates. If you find inefficiencies in multiple areas, your primary constraint could be a lack of systems and training.
