    I, recently, was involved with the AfDB’s #YEIB project in Ethiopia, & in one of the session focused on the #Ethiopian market, a powerful question was raised: How do we ignite an innovative culture within our MSMEs? Ultimately helping them build resilience, & create massive value in a dynamic market like Ethiopia, making MSMEs irresistible to investors, effectively de-risking their future.   That question sent me on a deep search. I knew the answer wasn't waiting for some mystical spark or a stroke of '#innate_genius.' The real secret to #breakthrough_innovation lies in cultivating learnable behavior, what the experts have powerfully defined as #Innovation_DNA.   Research Indicates…   A rigorous Harvard Business Review (HBR) research into the world's most successful entrepreneurial executives cracked the code. They identified five-key '#discovery_skills' that fundamentally distinguish the world's top innovators.   The Exciting Part…   They were NOT #innate_traits, but powerful behaviors one can practice, master, & embed into one’s daily life. This is the pragmatic, exciting path to innovation for all of us!   The five '#discovery_skills' :   1.#Associating - The Innovator's Superpower. This is the ability to connect the unconnected, synthesizing novel inputs from wildly different fields to find breakthroughs at the intersection of diverse disciplines.   2.#Questioning - The Engine of Change. This morning I was listening to Chris Bailey — who says meditation returns nine minutes of focused thinking for every one minute invested. That landed. Because in coaching, I see it consistently: The leaders who generate the most original thinking are not always the busiest. They are the ones who have learned to create stillness — deliberately. 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘴 𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘦𝘵, 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦. 𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝑺𝒕𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒊𝒔 𝒂 𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 𝑪𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 A noisy mind reacts. A quiet mind creates. A reactive leader fixes. A creative leader reimagines. In that stillness, four capabilities come alive: ◆ Curiosity — You walk into problems with an empty glass. Ego softens. Openness grows. ◆ Experimentation — Fear of failure shrinks. "What can I learn?" replaces "What if I'm wrong?" ◆ Openness — Solutions can come from anywhere.     Innovation isn’t a talent It’s a regulated brain. When your nervous system is agitated, your thinking becomes rigid. Under stress, the brain prioritizes efficiency. It narrows options. It relies on old pathways. It chooses what worked before. That keeps you safe. It doesn’t move you forward. Cognitive flexibility lives in the prefrontal cortex. And the prefrontal cortex goes offline under threat. When the brain is calm, a different pattern emerges. Neural networks communicate more fluidly. Distant associations strengthen. Perspective widens. Calm brains compare. Stressed brains conclude. Innovation requires the ability to hold multiple possibilities without collapsing into the first one. That capacity expands when the parasympathetic system is active. Heart rate steadies. Cortisol lowers. Executive function sharpens. In that state you think differently. Here’s how to increase cognitive flexibility: 1️⃣ Slow your exhale before big thinking Longer exhales activate vagal tone. But then I joined a team where our 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 was to surface blockers, share raw ideas, and run fast experiments — no slides, no overthinking, just momentum. We didn't just talk about innovation. We practiced it — like reps in the gym. That’s when it clicked: 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿.     The secret to unlocking your best strategic ideas? Do nothing… In legal operations, you’re trained to always be in execution mode—to constantly solve problems, manage workflows, and keep things running smoothly. But the problem with always staying in tactical mode is that it kills creativity, and without creativity, strategic thinking becomes very difficult. Which brings us to the tricky question, how exactly do you plan for creativity? Here’s a little experiment you can try out: Step 1: Hit Pause on Productivity  For your next big leap in strategic thinking you need to bring the constant buzz of productivity to a grinding halt. When productivity dips, creativity soars. You need to allow your mind to wander, and for that you have to hit the brakes on everything else. Step 2: Create Space for Deep Thinking To unleash creativity, you need unhindered space. Schedule a downtime for yourself—no messages, no mails, no distractions. Block your calendar & let your thoughts flow. Step 3: Zone Out Remember those moments as kids while you were riding in a car, you would stare outside the window…just zoning out. That’s what I am talking about, that’s exactly when your brain connects the dots and delivers those aha moments.  Neuroscientists call this the Default Mode Network (DMN)—the brain’s creative engine that activates when you’re not focused on a specific task. Step 4: Keep a Notepad While you let your thoughts roam, ideas can pop-up from anywhere. You might have spent hours working on a problem—and suddenly while doing nothing a solution appears. That’s just how the brain works. Remember to jot your ideas down. While we live in a world that celebrates efficiency & productivity — our most innovative ideas can be unlocked by doing the exact opposite. Block out time for reflection. That first 30 minutes determines whether you'll get breakthrough ideas or recycled thinking. Something that I call getting into the “psychology of innovation”. After facilitating several sessions, I've discovered something surprising: the traditional "let's go around and introduce ourselves" kills creative energy before it starts. Your team's brains are still in operational mode—not possibility mode. Here are five unconventional warmups I've tested that rewire neural pathways for innovation in under 20 minutes: 1. The Impossible Question Challenge 🔥 Start by asking questions that have no "correct" answers: "How would you design a restaurant on Mars?" or "What if sleep became optional?" This immediately signals we're breaking free from conventional thinking. 2. The Reality Bending Exercise ✨ Have everyone write down three "unchangeable facts" about your industry. Then challenge teams to imagine a world where each "fact" is no longer true. As Steve Jobs said, "Reality can be distorted"—this exercise trains that muscle. 3.     Did We Forget About Creativity in Software Engineering? The most memorable breakthroughs I’ve seen didn’t come from a perfect process. They came from moments when someone felt safe enough to suggest an idea that sounded risky, odd, or incomplete and we decided to explore it anyway. Yet under the pressure to deliver and optimize, creativity can easily be overlooked. Exploring possibilities together sparks new ideas and strengthens the bond between team members. All Ideas Matter Everyone should feel free to contribute during brainstorming. Early ideas don't need to be perfect or practical. In the first stage of thinking, it's more important to explore than to evaluate. Give each contribution the same attention and respond with curiosity instead of criticism. That's how confidence grows and ideas evolve. Diversity Adds Spark The best insights come from the least expected viewpoints. Each of us approaches problems through a unique lens shaped by our background, experiences, and skills. Diverse teams avoid the comfort of agreement and create richer conversations leading to results no single person could design alone. Experimentation Keeps Us Moving Innovation depends on trying new things. When teams understand the boundaries of acceptable risk, they can take bold but thoughtful steps. A small experiment can reveal more than a long debate. Even when something fails, it brings new awareness to what might work next. Creativity isn't a luxury.
