    Meditation that “feels good” might not be what you need. One size fits all may not be the right approach to meditating. Neuromeditation takes the centuries old practice of meditation and moves it out of a “one-size-fits-all mindfulness practice” and into something rooted in the understanding that different meditation techniques have distinct neurological impacts. Traditional meditation advice might suggest "just relax and meditate," but this can be counterproductive. If you have a chronically under-activated brain (like those with depression or attention difficulties), a relaxation-focused meditation might actually reinforce your existing brain state rather than help you shift it. Imagine someone with ADHD who finds sitting still incredibly challenging. Their first instinct might be to avoid meditation or only do very brief, relaxed practices. However, a structured, focused attention meditation—even if it feels initially frustrating—could actually help train their brain's attentional networks. On the flip side, someone with chronic anxiety might be drawn to very passive, relaxation-based meditations. But an active meditation that requires them to systematically observe their thoughts without getting caught up in them could be more beneficial for breaking anxiety patterns. Neuromeditation is grounded in neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections.     We often think of mindfulness as a wellness practice but the elite performers I work with view it differently. They view it as a performance tool that enhances their ability to be successful in every area of life. Whether you're leading a company, caring for patients, competing in sports, raising a family, or navigating high-stakes decisions, your ability to direct attention may be one of your most valuable assets. The challenge is that modern life constantly competes for that attention. Research shows that mindfulness strengthens the very brain networks responsible for executive control, attention regulation, emotional regulation, and cognitive flexibility. It has been associated with increased cortical thickness in regions responsible for higher-order thinking, improved connectivity across attention networks, and reduced reactivity to stress. In other words, mindfulness doesn't simply help us feel better. It helps us perform better. The highest performers understand that success is not about eliminating pressure. It's about developing the ability to maintain clarity, focus, and composure while under pressure. Mindfulness is a way to enhance performance. I recently had the opportunity to write for the American Psychiatric Association on the science behind mindfulness, attention, executive control, and cognitive excellence.     Vikings QB JJ McCarthy made waves on Sunday when he showed up to the field 2.5 hours early to meditate and practice visualization. I love that his use of somatic tools is getting attention, but here’s what’s being missed in the conversation: You don’t need hours to benefit from these practices. The brain and nervous system begin responding in as little as 5–10 minutes when you’re focused and intentional. That’s not opinion—that’s neuroscience. We’ve known for nearly two decades that the brain reorganizes in real time when we engage in meditation, breathwork, and guided imagery. • In a 5-day study, just 20 minutes a day of body-mind training improved executive control and increased activation in the anterior cingulate cortex—key for focus and emotional regulation (Tang et al., 2007). • Eight minutes of mindfulness was enough to quiet amygdala reactivity, helping the brain downshift from threat to clarity (Davidson et al., 2003). • Expert meditators show gamma-wave synchronization—linked to learning and awareness—within seconds of practice (Lutz et al., 2009). Translation: even short sessions reduce stress chemistry, sharpen attention, and prime the nervous system for performance. And the gains compound. • 8 weeks of consistent practice increases gray matter in regions tied to memory, emotional regulation, and perspective-taking (Hölzel et al., 2011; Lazar et al., 2005). • Visualization alone can strengthen neural pathways—one study showed a 33% strength increase from mental reps (Ranganathan et al., 2004). So yes—McCarthy showing up hours early is a powerful signal about where elite preparation is headed. But don’t let the headline convince you that longevity, cognitive clarity, and emotional steadiness are reserved for people with two hours to spare. Most research points to a sweet spot for beginners around 12–20 minutes a day. Even 5–10 minutes can shift your physiology, sharpen your focus, and help regulate stress. This isn’t about time—it’s about consistency, presence, and intention. Elite athletes and providers are proving what science has shown for years: your nervous system is trainable.     Your brain becomes stronger the same way your body does — through consistent exercise, discipline, and mindful training. In a world filled with distractions, notifications, noise, and constant pressure, the ability to focus deeply has become a superpower. A few simple brain exercises practiced daily can dramatically improve concentration, sharpen memory, and strengthen mental clarity. Start with meditation and deep breathing, because even a few minutes of silence trains the mind to stay present instead of wandering endlessly. Reading books without checking your phone builds mental endurance and teaches your brain to focus for longer periods. Solving puzzles, playing chess, learning new skills, and practicing memory games challenge neural pathways and keep the mind active and alert. Writing down thoughts in a journal improves clarity and helps reduce mental clutter, while activities like visualization and mindfulness strengthen attention control. Even physical exercise, proper sleep, hydration, and healthy nutrition play a powerful role in boosting brain performance because a healthy body fuels a focused mind. Most importantly, train yourself to do one thing at a time. Multitasking weakens concentration, but deep work strengthens it. The mind is like a muscle — the more intentionally you train it, the sharper, calmer, and more powerful it becomes.     𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝟑-𝟑-𝟑 𝐑𝐮𝐥𝐞 (𝟑-𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐞) 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞 I came across the 3-3-3 rule, a mindfulness technique for reducing anxiety. I have practised mindfulness for several years and have found that it helps me detach from feelings of anxiety. There are many different mindfulness techniques (e.g., breathing ladders, practising acceptance, and sending caring thoughts), so it's always interesting to read about new techniques that I can try, especially when I may not have as long to practice mindfulness on a given day. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀? Mindfulness, also known as mindful awareness, derives from Buddhist traditions (Bränström et al., 2011). Bishop et al. (2004) state that mindfulness involves self-regulating awareness regarding momentary mental states and processes. Further, mindfulness includes non-evaluation, openness, and acceptance of moment-to-moment experiences. One’s mindfulness practice can be enhanced through training, such as meditation (Brown et al., 2007; Gotink et al., 2016) or by promoting acceptance (Doron et al., 2020). 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 Gottink et al. (2016) published a systematic review of 30 studies that used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine the effects of mindfulness training programmes on brain structure and function. They reported changes in structure and function in brain areas such as the prefrontal cortex, insula, hippocampus, and amygdala. Due to these functional and structural changes in the brain, mindfulness training may help athletes regulate emotions more effectively, such as anxiety. Other researchers have found that mindfulness training is associated with: ✅ Reduced burnout and anxiety (Moen et al., 2015) ✅ Increase the likelihood of experiencing a flow state (Cathcart et al., 2014) ✅ Increased attention (Mardon et al., 2016) ✅ Improved focus (Cote et al., 2019). Other studies have found that ✅ Fewer task-irrelevant thoughts (Doron et al., 2020) ✅ Reduced susceptibility to choking (Hussey et al., 2020) ✅ Reduced incidence of injuries and days lost to injury (Naderi et al., 2020) ✅ Enhanced well-being and decreased depressive symptoms (Norzouri et al., 2020) 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟯-𝟯-𝟯 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 1️⃣ Listen Spend one minute listening to what is happening around you with your eyes closed. Notice the noises around you. 2️⃣ Observe Open your eyes and observe three objects that you can see for 1-minute. Observe their colour, shape, and texture in as much detail as possible. 3️⃣ Touch Spend 1 minute touching three objects around you. Notice if they are hot or cold, heavy or light, rough or smooth. The more often you practice any mindfulness technique, including the 3-3-3, the more effective it should be in helping calm you down when you experience anxiety.

This isn’t just wishful thinking, it’s exactly how mindfulness is transforming workplaces worldwide. I remember the Google “Search Inside Yourself” program, which taught mindfulness techniques combined with emotional intelligence, it has become legendary. Many people I know who took it felt less reactive in stressful situations and more equipped to collaborate effectively, driving both individual and team success. And they’re not alone. Many tech companies have embraced mindfulness practices, offering meditation sessions and stress management programs to employees. Why? Because it works. Mindfulness has been shown to reduce burnout rates and increase overall job satisfaction. But here’s the thing, mindfulness isn’t something you need an employer to introduce. It starts with you. Before your next meeting, try this - close your eyes, take three deep breaths and set an intention for how you want to show up. That tiny pause can mean the difference between reacting to stress and responding with clarity. It isn’t just a workplace trend—it’s a survival skill in a world that never stops moving.
