    Why Candidates Should Avoid Sharing Their CVs as a Link In today’s digital hiring landscape, candidates often look for convenient ways to share their CVs with recruiters and employers. One trend we see is applicants sending a hyperlink to their CV stored on Google Drive, Dropbox, or other cloud services instead of attaching the file directly. While it may seem efficient, this practice often creates unnecessary barriers in the recruitment process and can leave a poor impression. 1. Accessibility Issues Links can easily break, expire, or lead to restricted-access files. Recruiters are often faced with messages like “You need permission to access this file.” This slows down the hiring process and may even prevent your CV from being considered. A recruiter reviewing hundreds of applications may not have time to chase permissions. 2. Professional Presentation An attached CV is immediate, polished, and professional. A link can feel informal, as though the document wasn’t ready to be shared. Employers expect candidates to present themselves in a way that demonstrates attention to detail and readiness — an attachment communicates that better than a link. 3. Security Concerns Recruiters are cautious about clicking unknown links. Even when legitimate, links may trigger security filters or be flagged as potential risks. This could cause your CV never to reach the hiring manager’s eyes. 4. Disruption to Recruitment Systems Many organizations use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to parse CVs and store candidate information. These systems require files in formats like PDF or Word. Links cannot be processed in the same way, meaning your CV may not be properly uploaded, searched, or reviewed. Best Practice: Attach, Don’t Link Always send your CV as an attached PDF or Word document. This ensures your CV is accessible, professional, and ATS-friendly. If you must use a link (for example, when sharing a design portfolio or code repository), make sure it supplements rather than replaces your CV — and that it is publicly accessible without requiring additional steps.     SSAM Series – Part 39: Attachment & Document Configuration – Managing maintenance documentation in SSAM In the last post, we discussed Time Sheet and Labor Recording and how technician effort can be captured directly from the mobile application. The next step is managing the documents that support maintenance execution. This is where Attachments and Document Management become important. Maintenance activities often require more than Work Orders and Notifications. Technicians may need access to: Equipment Photos Inspection Reports Technical Drawings Safety Documents Operating Procedures Maintenance Instructions PDF Manuals SSAM allows users to access, upload, and manage documents directly from mobile devices. This helps ensure technicians have the information they need while working in the field. A typical document process looks like this: Document Creation ↓ Document Attachment ↓ Synchronization ↓ Mobile Access ↓ Field Usage ↓ Update & Upload Depending on configuration, attachments can be linked to: Work Orders Notifications Equipment Functional Locations Measurement Documents Other Business Objects From the mobile application, technicians can: View attached documents Open PDFs and images Capture photos Upload attachments Add field evidence Access documentation while offline One common use case is capturing photos before and after maintenance work. These images become part of the maintenance record and help improve traceability and auditability. Then came a UAT demo. A user uploaded a file… and the app froze. Blank screen. “No item found.” In that moment, in front of stakeholders, I realized: Attachments are simple… until they’re not. --- Oh… let me tell you what an attachment actually is in Power Apps. It’s simply a file (like a PDF, image, or document) that gets linked to your form or record. For example, uploading a bill or photo as proof while submitting data. --- W𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 Attachments aren’t just upload boxes. They carry real business value: * Bills, invoices, receipts * Inspection images & compliance docs * Contracts and audit proofs If this part fails, users stop trusting the app — and go back to WhatsApp or email. --- C𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐈 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐝 (𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐢𝐱𝐞𝐝) * “No item to attach file” → Record wasn’t created yet * “No item found” → Wrong or unstable reference * Files disappearing → Form reset or wrong logic * Size issues → SharePoint limits * Wrong file uploads → No validation T𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐱 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱 — 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡: * Create record first, then attach * Use SubmitForm() for attachments * Use variables for stable references * Add simple validations --- W𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐝𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 I always clarify: * How many files? * What type (PDF, image, etc.)? * Size limits? * Where will files be stored? * Should users edit/delete later? These questions save a lot of rework later. --- What actually worked for me A 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐦𝐲 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞: 1. Create the parent record 2. Bind attachments to that record 3. Add validation (like file type check) That’s it — no over-engineering. --- F𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 Attachments are not a UI feature — they are part of the business process. Once I started treating them that way, my apps became more stable, and user complaints reduced significantly. --- If you're building in Power Apps, don’t ignore this part. Small mistakes here can break the whole experience. Here’s a simple breakdown with real examples: 🔹 Reference Type (Attachment vs. Overlay) Attachment brings everything linked inside the file. Overlay brings only the file you selected. 👉 Example: Link an architectural model without pulling all its MEP files? Use Overlay! 🔹 Positioning: Position Not Saved If you move the link manually and this is ON, it won't remember the move after reload. 👉 Tip: Lock the position once the site/location is finalized. 🔹 Saved Path & Path Type Absolute path = full computer address.     Email attachments have been around since 1992. That’s almost 35 years ago. And still, in sales, we rely on them every day when sharing PowerPoint presentations, proposals, case studies, images, product brochures, manuals… During a typical sales process, easily dozens of emails go back and forth. And sending attachments comes with familiar problems such as: ❓ Where is the right file? ❓ Which version is the latest? ❓ Did the customer open it? ❓ What were they actually interested in? ❓ How can I remove or update a document I’ve shared? ❓ How do I send large files? Sending content as attachments hurts both efficiency and the customer experience. Today, there are MUCH BETTER ways to share sales material. And often it is not about cost or difficulty, but simply old habits, and sometimes even laziness. 💡 Instead of sending files back and forth, you can share one link or a button that takes the customer to a branded Digital Sales Room, basically a dedicated mini webpage. The link can be shared via email, LinkedIn, or even a QR code at an event. This gives you multiple possibilities to reach customers. The customer always sees the latest content. Documents, videos, links, whatever is needed. You can update everything without sending a new email. You also get visibility into engagement. When the proposal was opened, what was viewed, and who else in the organization accessed it. And if multiple people are involved in the deal, everyone works from the same shared space. That is why I wanted to bring this up.     Stop sending lead magnets as attachments! I was consulting with a client yesterday, and the topic of Quiz Funnels and Lead Magnets came up. They’d mapped out their email strategy, which sequences would be triggered and when, and what upsells and downsells they were planning. I suggested some tweaks and some other ideas they could add in, but the strategy itself was pretty solid. One approach I disagreed with, however, was how they were planning on delivering the results of the quiz. A PDF Attachment. Simple, straightforward, and sitting right where their customer would expect it: their inbox. Now, I’m all about making the customer journey as friction-free as possible, but in this case, the cons far outweigh the pros. Rather than sending it as an attachment, it’s much more effective to host the PDF on a landing page—or even design an individual landing page for each quiz outcome—and send a link to the page in the email. Here’s why: Deliverability. An email from an unknown sender with a large PDF attached stands a high chance of landing in the Spam folder… and yes, the customer is expecting your email, so can go track it down and retrieve it, and if you forewarn them on the confirmation page this might happen, you can even signpost them how to do it, but it’s still going to cut down on the number of people who read your content. Sender Reputation: By asking your customer to click on a link in your email, you increase your sender reputation with email providers. It shows you’re sending valuable content that customers are engaging with, meaning future sends are much more likely to hit the inbox. Tracking. Links that get clicked can be tracked! You can see who has and who hasn’t viewed their results and follow up with them with a personalised response. You can also get to know your subscribers based on the numbers hitting each page. Opportunities to promote other content: Once they’re on your landing page and reading their results or lead magnet, you’ve got an opportunity to promote other products and services and then retarget those that don’t buy with ads on social or even trigger a follow-up email sequence. Easy to update: Spotted an error on your content after hitting send? A broken link? An update you want to make? No problem—tweak the landing page, and it’s fixed… you can’t do that with a PDF sitting in someone’s inbox. Greater engagement: Why not embed a video on the landing page and welcome your new fans? This is a great opportunity to engage with them even more and increase the likelihood that they’ll become loyal customers. Yes, it’s a little more work on the front end to create a landing page (coming from someone with… limited design skills!), but the effort is far outweighed by the positives. Do you agree?
