    My first 5 grant applications were rejected. Every single one. Here's how I went from £10k to £10m in research grant funding: I remember opening that fifth rejection email and thinking maybe my research just wasn't good enough. Maybe I wasn't cut out for this. Then a panel reviewer told me something that changed everything. She said: "I stopped reading on page 2." Not because the science was weak. Because the way I presented it was. I had buried the real-world impact on page 3. I led with the literature gap instead of the problem. My methodology was sound but my narrative was invisible. I was writing for academics. I should have been writing for funders. So I rebuilt my entire proposal structure around three principles. I now call it the 3P Proposal Structure. P1: Problem Framing. Lead with the real-world problem and its cost. Not the gap in the literature. Funders don't fund gaps. They fund solutions. "This problem costs the NHS £2.3 billion annually" hits harder than "this area remains under-explored." P2: Path Innovation. Show what you will do differently. Not just what you will study. Every applicant studies something. Very few explain why their approach is the one that will actually work. P3: Projected Impact. Connect your outcomes to the stakeholders who fund research. If the funder can see themselves in your story, you win. Same research question. Completely different proposal structure. The next application secured half a million pounds. Then a million. Then over the course of my career, more than £10 million in research funding. Grant writing is storytelling. Your research is the plot. The funder needs to see themselves in the story.     If you’re seeking funding for a research project (graduate, PhD, or postdoc) in Germany, make sure to explore the full spectrum of available opportunities. Don’t limit your applications to the well-known organisations like DFG, DAAD, or the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation – think beyond the usual options! Germany’s funding landscape is extensive and complex, with a wide range of public and private actors supporting research, including international researchers. Many of these opportunities require some digging to uncover. Who are the key funders in Germany? * State funding organisations: DFG, DAAD, BMBF, and others. * Universities and technical universities: Some offer their own (!) scholarships for undergraduates and postgraduates. * Non-university research organisations: Max Planck, Fraunhofer, and similar organisations often provide research contracts for an international audience with salaries based on public sector agreements. * Private foundations: Numerous foundations, such as VolkswagenStiftung, Robert Bosch Stiftung, Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds, and BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt, run thematic calls open to international applicants. * Private companies: Industry is Germany’s largest R&D investor, accounting for the majority of the country’s €129.7 billion R&D spending in 2023. Myriads of large and medium-sized companies offer graduate, PhD, and postdoc programmes open to international researchers. * Government authorities at state and federal levels: These can also be valuable sources of funding. For example, the German Bundestag offers International Parliamentary Scholarships to international graduates, and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) provides fellowships for researchers. One challenge is the lack of comprehensive directories, e.g., for company-funded research, making the search particularly complex. Persistence pays off – you may discover unique opportunities few others have found!     🚀 Grantwriting post 🚀 Imagine your reviewer or panel/committee member. It's 9 PM, the night before the review meeting. They've got a toddler on their lap, a glass of wine in one hand, and your proposal in the other. They've been interrupted 5 times while reading and they need to get through 9 more proposals before going to sleep. Can they understand what you want to do? No? Make. It. Simpler. Over the past few months I've been reviewing grants for Cancer Research UK (CRUK), the Research Council of Finland | Suomen Akatemia, and the Lung Cancer Research Foundation. Submitting a grant takes an enormous amount of effort, but so many fail simply because **the reviewers can't understand what you want to do.** A few suggestions applicable to almost any grant ➡️ 1️⃣ Include a sentence saying, "The goal of this project is ________." Ideally make it the first sentence of your abstract and your proposal, but at minimum put it in the first paragraph. If you can't state your goal in one sentence, refine it until you can. 2️⃣ Remove all acronyms. If it's less recognizable than "HIV" or "DNA," then spell it out every time. Acronyms can hopelessly muddle an otherwise strong proposal. 3️⃣ Start with *simplicity* then add *complexity.* First, write a half-length version of your proposal in an extremely simple way that an educated layperson could understand, and test it on a few people. When that's done, use what you wrote as header sentences/paragraphs, and add all the technical details below them. Now, each reviewer can easily skim past the parts outside their field, while still understanding the big picture. 4️⃣ List the central elements of your proposal, then REPEAT THEM. This is important for methods, e.g. - humans or mice? study design? case and control definition? recruitment strategy? sample size? statistical approach? These key facts (without details) can be repeated in the abstract, end of background, methods (here, include the details), and assessment of threats/weaknesses. If you repeat them with perfect consistency, your reviewer will understand what you want to do, and feel reassured that you have a clear plan. Happy grantwriting ✍ 😊

    Last quarter, I worked with 4 different organizations seeking funding. Same goal. Same urgency. Completely different outcomes. Two got close to funding conversations, while two never made it past initial review. The difference was not the impact of their work. It was how they approached fundraising. Here is what I observed: 1. One organization had a strong project but no clear problem framing; their proposal described activities instead of outcomes. 2. Another applied to 6 different funders without alignment, which made rejection inevitable. 3. One refined their proposal structure and aligned with the right donor, which moved them into serious consideration. 4. Another focused on clarity, outcomes, and positioning, and their application stood out immediately. From this small sample, 75 percent had structural weaknesses in their proposals, and 50 percent applied to misaligned funders. Only those who applied smart fundraising principles moved forward. This is a pattern I keep seeing. Funding is rarely about who is doing the most work. It is about smart fundraising, how well you communicate impact, structure your case, and align with the right opportunity. If you are applying for grants, the question is not whether funding is available. The question is whether you are positioned to compete. I am currently working with a few organizations on structuring their proposals and aligning with the right funding opportunities.     Science commercialization is often framed as lab-to-market, but the real question is: who funds the “too applied for grants, too early for VC” zone? I've seen it firsthand: a chicken-and-egg problem where VCs want traction before they'll commit, and founders need capital to create the very traction investors demand. Too often, brilliant scientists with world-changing technologies get trapped here. How science founders can navigate this valley: 1. Build your funding stack based on alignment — Grants, philanthropy, corporate partnerships, and venture capital each comes with different north stars and risk tolerances. Understand how your science fits now and in the future and plan accordingly. 2. Approach expert funders — Seek out capital providers who deeply understand your space. They’re best positioned to see the potential and impact of your work before it’s consensus. 3. Stage-gate your milestones — Show a path where $X unlocks validation, $Y proves scale, and later capital accelerates commercialization. Make each milestone reduce one major risk for follow on funders. 4. Activate alternative capital — Donor-advised funds, venture philanthropy, mission-driven corporates, and government innovation programs can back early science that’s obvious to experts but not yet to markets. Use them to build incremental validation. 5. Design for optionality — Build multiple paths forward: non-profit arms for public good research, commercial spinouts for market applications, licensing deals for near-term revenue, and strategic partnerships for distribution. 6. Create urgency — Patent deadlines, grant reporting requirements, and pilot customer commitments can become forcing functions that accelerate decisions. Use them to your advantage in funding negotiations. What strategies have you used to bridge this valley?     In 10+ years reviewing grant proposals, I've seen a pattern in declines that almost nobody talks about. The writing is usually fine. Sometimes it's even good. What's broken is the logic. The need statement says one thing. The program design says something slightly different. The evaluation plan measures a third thing entirely. And the budget — if anyone actually read it — doesn't quite add up to the scope in the narrative. Funders don't always name this in decline letters. They say "not a priority area this cycle" or "strong competition." What they mean is: we couldn't follow the thread from problem to solution to proof. A proposal review isn't about grammar or word count. It's about logic — whether the argument holds, whether the evidence is there, whether the funder can say yes without taking a leap of faith. Before you submit, someone who hasn't been staring at the proposal for six weeks needs to read it and ask: - Does the need statement justify the ask? - Does the program logic connect inputs to outcomes? - Does the budget match what the narrative promises? - Is there a clear, funder-facing evaluation framework? Here's my detailed guide to help you put your best foot forward: 1. Start with a Strong Introduction: Your introduction is your chance to grab attention. Clearly state the problem your research aims to solve and why it matters. Think of it as your elevator pitch – concise, engaging, and to the point. 2. Define Your Objectives: Outline your research goals and objectives. What do you hope to achieve? Make sure they’re SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound). This helps funders understand the impact of your work. 3. Conduct a Literature Review: Show you’ve done your homework. Summarize the current state of research in your field and highlight gaps your project will fill. This demonstrates your knowledge and the necessity of your research. 4.
