    Pumping Up The Packaging Game Recyclability of pumps in the beauty industry is a complex challenge that becomes more complicated the deeper you dig. They're everywhere—from lotions to serums. While they may seem small and harmless, they can have a big impact on sustainability, often not in a positive way. Pumps are typically made up of a mix of materials: metal springs, plastic components, and sometimes even glass, which makes recycling a nightmare. Some brands have switched to all-plastic pumps to make recycling easier. Sounds like progress, but it's not that simple. Plastic springs don't perform as well as metal ones, which can affect usability, especially for older users or those with limited dexterity. Additionally, figuring out whether a pump has a plastic or metal spring during a manual sorting process adds another layer of complexity—it's nearly impossible without taking the pump apart. One thing's for sure, if the product becomes harder to use, sustainability alone won't cut it. A frustrating user experience can easily outweigh even the best-intentioned packaging solutions. Refillable systems offer a promising option, but they come with their own hurdles. Hygiene concerns are a big one. Consumers can be hesitant to reuse packaging, especially if they're unsure about cleanliness. If a product feels less hygienic, consumers might simply avoid it altogether. This is where innovative design comes into play. BLOND's collaboration with Daisyface is a great example of how to address these challenges. They've created refillable aluminium containers with integrated airless pumps that tick the right boxes. Their refills are made from single-material, fully recyclable bottles, solving the recyclability issue without compromising functionality or aesthetics. The key opportunity for brands is to think beyond just "sustainable" and focus on the big picture.     Recently, I came across a small packaging optimization case that was quite inspiring. 👏 It was about packaging a foam roller.With the traditional method, securing the product required a large amount of air column bags, bubble wrap, and additional fillers to keep it stable inside the box. When you open the carton, you see a pile of #plastic.Yes, the product is protected — but the resource consumption is significant. By upgrading the internal box structure, simply redesigning how the carton holds the product, the same foam roller can now be securely fixed in place — without using any plastic cushioning at all. No extra materials.Just a different way of thinking. This made me realize again:Sustainability doesn’t always start with big slogans.Sometimes, it begins with a small detail. Optimizing a #packaging structure may mean: Reducing single-use plastic Lowering shipping weight Improving packing efficiency Cutting overall costs And when this kind of improvement is scaled across production,its impact multiplies.True sustainable design is not just about using “eco-friendly materials.”It’s about reducing unnecessary materials in the first place.     The most sustainable packaging is not always the one the consumer sees. When we talk about packaging sustainability, most of the attention goes to the primary pack: the bottle, tray, pouch, box or wrapper that reaches the consumer. That makes sense. It is visible, easy to compare and often becomes the symbol of the product’s environmental impact. But a large part of packaging performance happens earlier in the chain. Transport boxes. Trays. Dividers. Pallets. Stretch film. Returnable crates. Protective inserts. Corner protection. Layer pads. Secondary and tertiary packaging. None of these elements is especially glamorous. But they can decide whether a product arrives in good condition, whether a pallet is stable, whether a shipment is rejected, whether a fragile item breaks, or whether fresh products lose quality before reaching the shelf. This is why reducing packaging only at the visible level can be misleading. A lighter primary pack may look better, but if it needs more secondary protection, creates more transport damage, reduces pallet efficiency or increases rejected product, the system may not improve. The same applies in the opposite direction. A well-designed transport or industrial packaging solution may look like “extra packaging”. But if it reduces breakage, improves handling, protects the product and allows more efficient logistics, it can reduce the total impact. The key question is not only: “How much packaging does the consumer see?” It is also: “How much damage, waste, rework and inefficiency does the whole packaging system prevent?” Good packaging design does not stop at the shelf. It starts with the product, continues through manufacturing, storage and transport, and only ends when the product has been used and the packaging has followed a realistic end-of-life route. Sometimes the most important packaging is the one nobody notices. Because it simply did its job.
