I just wrote about how SSO—the thing that was supposed to unify identity—created the most fragmented identity landscape we've ever had. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝘁: User → SSO → All Applications (One identity, seamless access) 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲: → Okta for SaaS apps → Azure AD for Microsoft 365 → AWS IAM for cloud infrastructure → Legacy Active Directory for on-prem → 3 different identity systems from acquisitions → Service accounts that bypass SSO entirely → VPNs with separate authentication → Databases with local credentials 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁:  • Users have 5-7 different "single" sign-ons  • Security can't answer "who has access to what"  • Deprovisioning fails across disconnected systems  • You're paying for SSO seven times while getting zero unified benefit 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲:  • SSO was deployed tactically (app by app), not strategically  • Each business unit chose their own provider  • Acquisitions brought competing platforms  • Legacy systems couldn't integrate  • Nobody governed the overall architecture I break down:  • How we got here (the 5 deadly sins of SSO deployment)  • Why your "unified" identity is actually 47 silos  • The security nightmare this creates  • What should have happened instead  • The path to actual identity unification How many SSO platforms are you actually running?     The Dangers of Fragmented Security Tools Last week, I read an enlightening article on the need for AI-powered unified security platforms. It underscored a recent experience of mine that highlights the risks of fragmented security tools. I was consulting with an enterprise client that relied on a patchwork of network security products. They used different vendors for their firewall, EPP, EDR, sandboxing, VPN, cloud security, and more. Each product had its management console (even from the same vendor sometimes) and limited visibility into threats. No unified analysis or intelligence was shared across these disparate tools. Sure enough, the complexity of this fragmented environment led to a debilitating breach. The company was hit by a rapid ransomware attack that spread quickly between endpoints, networks, and cloud instances. The security team scrambled to trace the attack vector across their disjointed tools but couldn't keep up with the speed of the propagating malware. Within hours, a tremendous amount of data was encrypted, held hostage and exfiltrated for some of them. Because the point products operated in silos, they failed to detect the behavioral anomalies indicating a ransomware attack in progress. There was no unified threat intelligence or automation to contain the incident. This painful experience highlighted the urgent need to consolidate their security stack into an integrated platform with AI capabilities. The article I read validated the next steps to prevent this from happening again. The solution is a unified architecture that provides real-time threat visibility, automation, and AI-powered analytics across networks, clouds, and devices. By leveraging advances in AI to detect never-before-seen threats, organizations can secure against modern cyberattacks. I highly recommend reading this report for any enterprise looking to maximize security posture while minimizing complexity. The time has come to break down tool silos and embrace integrated platforms that keep pace with the digital threat landscape. Don't become another ransomware statistic.
