Many people assume solar PV degrades quickly — but long-term evidence suggests otherwise. This paper in EES Solar analyses photovoltaic systems operating for more than two decades across different climates and material configurations. - Based on rare long-term empirical data, the findings suggest that PV modules can retain a high share of their initial performance even after 30 years of operation, with degradation rates lower than often assumed. - This matters for energy policy and system planning. Assumptions about asset lifetimes and degradation feed directly into cost projections, investment decisions, and decarbonisation pathways. - Evidence that PV systems may last longer and perform more reliably than expected strengthens the case for rapid scale-up of solar as a core pillar of the energy transition. - The paper also highlights the importance of quality standards, system design, and operating conditions — reminders that policy frameworks should focus not only on deployment volumes, but also on long-term performance and sustainability. 40% of Australian dwellings have rooftop PV generating electricity at a cost far below retail tariffs. A turn-key 10 kW system costs ~$10k which translates to 5 US-cents per kWh. Published retail tariffs don’t reflect what average people actually pay. Australia has more rooftop PV and generates more solar electricity per person than any other country. Rooftop PV is really cheap because of its large scale, absence of tariffs, and very smooth Government regulations. New rooftop PV has an average size of 11 kW. Years ago, rooftop PV was kick-started by subsidies. Now it is driven by compelling economic advantage. In South Australia, rooftop PV generates a quarter of annual electricity demand. It exceeds 100% of demand on sunny days. The grid remains very stable. Rooftop PV combined with storage (batteries, hot water tank) and an all-electric home & car provides the cheapest, cleanest and most reliable domestic energy in history. https://lnkd.in/etAXPNEf

✨ Resilience pays dividends you can’t always measure on a balance sheet. For those who know me, this won’t be surprising. I’m fairly conservative when it comes to risk, and I plan… a lot. Five years ago, during the pandemic home-improvement boom, I invested in a combined solar and battery storage system. It felt like one of those long-term resilience decisions you hope you never truly need. For the first few years, that was mostly true. Outages were rare, brief, and forgettable. Then something shifted. 🔥 Earlier this year, the Palisades fire triggered multi-day preventative power shutoffs. Our neighborhood lost power for over three days, but our home stayed online the entire time. The Powerwall charged during the day, discharged at night, and quietly did its job. Neighbors came by to use our Wi-Fi for work and communication. That’s when it clicked. The investment wasn’t about efficiency. It was about continuity. ⚡ And recently, outages have become noticeably more frequent. The screenshot below is a sample of the backup logs from the past year, including one that occurred earlier this week. The grid is stressed, weather events are increasing, and infrastructure is not keeping pace. At this point, solar plus storage is no longer just “nice to have.” It is a way to avoid going dark at random based on where we live and how the utility grid behaves. When you rely on electricity to work, communicate, and keep a household running, resilience becomes more than a luxury. It becomes an operational posture. 🛡️ This mirrors the same logic we use in cybersecurity and enterprise engineering: • Invest before the crisis • Build resilience before the breach • Stress-test the system before the storm The technologies available today make this possible. Intelligent storage, smart load shifting, and real-time grid awareness simply did not exist at this level a decade ago. True energy independence is now within reach for regular households. ✨ Resilience pays dividends you can’t always measure on a balance sheet. (And sometimes, it keeps the whole block online.)

🔧☀️ Your Rooftop Solar System Might Look Fine… But Is It Really Performing at Its Peak? Many rooftop PV systems quietly lose efficiency, suffer from hidden faults, or even risk electrical failures — all due to poor preventive maintenance. That’s why a solid 6-step checklist isn’t optional — it’s essential. 🚨 Before the next outage or performance dip surprises you… ask: Are these 6 steps in your routine maintenance plan? 👇 Here’s the engineer’s checklist for peak reliability and power output: ✅ 1. Visual Inspection of Panels Look for cracks, discoloration, dirt buildup, or shading. 🧠 Tip: Use drones for safer rooftop scans. ✅ 2. Panel Cleaning Dirt reduces efficiency by up to 15%. 🧼 Use deionized water and soft brushes — avoid peak sun hours. ✅ 3. Electrical Connection Check Loose MC4s or overheating terminals are silent killers. 🌡 Thermal cameras help detect heat signatures before failure. ✅ 4. Inverter Performance Verification Compare actual vs expected yield. 📊 Efficiency should remain above 95% for string inverters. ✅ 5. Battery Health Monitoring (if applicable) Track SoH and charge/discharge cycles. ⚡ Replace if SoH drops below 80%. ✅ 6. Earthing & Lightning Protection Check Poor grounding can destroy your system in a flash. 🌩 Ensure grounding resistance is < 5 ohms. 🎯 Preventive maintenance increases lifespan, improves efficiency, and prevents costly downtime — especially in industrial or critical-use rooftop solar systems. 🔁 Run this checklist every 6 months and watch your ROI soar. ♻️ Repost to share with your network if you find this useful. 🔗 Follow Ashish Shorma Dipta for more posts like this. #SolarEnergy #RenewableEnergy #RooftopSolar #SolarMaintenance #CleanEnergy #ElectricalEngineering

Neighborhood Power: What L.A. Firestorms Taught Us About Energy Independence Recent wildfires in Los Angeles left 4 million energy customers without power for days. But scattered throughout affected neighborhoods, an unexpected phenomenon emerged: homes with solar panels and battery storage became "energy oases" where neighbors found refuge, charged devices, and accessed essential services. Here's why this matters for everyone, not just those in fire-prone regions: 1. The Shifting Role of Homes in Energy Resilience - Traditional emergency response relies on centralized infrastructure that often fails during disasters - Solar-powered homes are functioning as micro-power stations during grid outages - Technology that was once considered a luxury is becoming essential community infrastructure - Simple solutions like extension cords create impromptu neighborhood microgrids 2. The Changing Demographics of Clean Energy Adoption - Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found 60% of new solar adopters in California are now low/middle-income households - 52% are families of color, challenging conventional assumptions about who benefits from clean energy - The motivation is shifting from environmental idealism to practical resilience and economic security - Communities previously left out of the clean energy transition are increasingly participating 3. The Economic Impact Beyond Individual Homes - Home solar systems delivered $1.5 billion in grid savings to all California ratepayers in 2024 - These systems reduce peak demand stress when the grid is most vulnerable - Benefits extend to all utility customers regardless of whether they have solar themselves - The value goes far beyond emergency backup—it's improving overall grid performance Real examples show how this plays out in communities. When the L.A. firestorms hit, Scott Liggett's home became a neighborhood haven: "I found my elderly neighbor outside, wandering around kind of dazed, so I brought her over to my house and warmed her up, got her some coffee, and hooked up her cell phone." Another resident, Richard Olague, maintained power for 72 hours while neighbors relied on candles: "Not only was it comforting to us, but also being able to provide for our friends and neighbors." These experiences reveal an emerging reality: as extreme weather events become more common, the resilience of our communities increasingly depends on distributed energy resources that can function when centralized systems fail. #EnergyResilience #SolarPower #CommunityResilience #ClimateAdaptation

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗪𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗪𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿? When we talk about solar in India, the conversation usually circles around numbers, gigawatts added, new factories coming up, or how tariffs are dropping. It’s not about how many panels we produce, but how long they deliver power - 10, 15, or 25+ years. At Inox Solar, we decided to address this head-on. From day one of our 3GW manufacturing facility, we established a dedicated reliability lab. This lab is led by Manoj Singh Karmiyal, who earlier built and led a world-class reliability setup at First Solar, alongside our CTO, Mr. Virender Sharma, and a highly talented team. Because reliability is not a checkbox. It is what decides if a solar module will truly perform for 25 years in tough environments. Our labs are designed to: - Test modules against real-world stress like humidity, thermal cycling, and damp heat - Detect failures early and improve product quality - Validate new technologies before scaling up - Build trust with customers and investors These aren’t quick checks. Tests like Humidity Freeze, Thermal Cycling, and Damp Heat take weeks, sometimes months. But they are essential if we want our modules to perform for decades. The #automobilesector already learned this lesson; reliability is now non-negotiable, especially with EVs. Solar must follow the same path if India’s clean energy dream is to be truly sustainable. I also believe that building this ecosystem is part of Make in India. We already have strong environmental chamber manufacturers here. But one gap still exists: load testers are not yet made in India, even though they are critical for simulating wind and snow loads on solar modules. If India wants to lead in solar, we cannot treat reliability as an afterthought. It must be part of our system from day one. 🌞☀️Solar Generation Losses & Their Impact 🕶️ Solar energy systems are subject to various types of #losses that can significantly impact overall power generation efficiency. Understanding these losses is crucial for optimizing system performance and maximizing returns. 1️⃣ Shading Losses 🩷 Even partial shading from nearby trees, buildings, or debris can drastically reduce the power output of a solar panel. Since panels are often connected in series, shading of a single panel can affect the performance of the entire string. 2️⃣ Soiling Losses❤️ Accumulation of dust, dirt, bird droppings, and pollution on solar panels blocks sunlight, reducing efficiency by 5–25% if not cleaned regularly. Routine maintenance is vital to mitigate soiling effects. 3️⃣ Temperature Losses🧡 Solar panel efficiency decreases as temperature rises. For every 1°C increase above the standard test condition temperature of 25°C, panel output drops by approximately 0.3–0.5%, depending on the panel technology used. 4️⃣ Mismatch Losses💛 Manufacturing differences, aging, and varying degradation rates cause performance inconsistencies between panels, leading to mismatch losses and reduced overall system output. 5️⃣ Conversion Losses💚 Inverters and other power electronics are responsible for converting DC power generated by panels into AC power for use. This conversion process typically results in 2–5% energy losses, with older or lower-quality inverters potentially causing even higher losses. 6️⃣ Cable & Transmission Losses🩵 As electricity flows through cables, some energy is lost as heat. Poor cable sizing, inferior materials, and long transmission distances can cause losses ranging from 1–3%. 7️⃣ Degradation Losses💙 Over time, solar panels naturally degrade, typically losing around 0.5–1% of their efficiency per year. This gradual reduction results in lower energy generation over a 25–30 year panel lifespan. 8️⃣ Weather & Irradiance Variability💜 Changes in weather conditions, such as cloud cover, fog, and seasonal shifts, impact the amount of sunlight reaching solar panels. These variations cause fluctuations in daily and seasonal power generation. 9️⃣ Reflection & Angle Losses🤎 Incorrect installation angles or lack of anti-reflective coatings can cause panels to reflect sunlight instead of absorbing it, leading to 1–3% energy losses. Proper orientation and tilt optimization are critical for maximizing sunlight absorption. 🔟 Battery Storage & Charge Controller Losses🩶 In solar systems with energy storage, losses occur during the charging and discharging processes, as well as through power conversion. These losses can account for 10–15% of the energy, reducing the overall efficiency of the system. 🔋Typical Total Losses (W/o Storage):❤️🩹 ~20–35% (depending on system quality, location, and maintenance) 🔋🔋Typical Total Losses (With Storage):💖 ~30–45% (due to additional battery-related losses) #SolarEnergy #GreenEnergy #EnergyLosses #SolarDegradation
