    Got a quiet moment before February hits? Required reading for the growing ecosystem of businesses that intersect with the ageing journey: home care providers, independent living, insurers, financial services, allied health, pharmacies. The AARP 2026 Tech Trends report just dropped, surveying over 2,500 adults aged 50+ about their relationship with technology. Buried in the data is a signal that reshapes how we think about products and services for this market. Two-thirds of adults 50+ now believe technology makes daily life, ageing, and ageing in place easier. Not 'might help someday.' Not 'could be useful for some people.' Makes it easier. Today. This isn't a future trend to monitor. It's a strategic imperative happening right now. The resistance narrative is over. Families are ready. The question is whether our sector is ready to meet them differently. A few other numbers that really stood out: → 55% of family caregivers are now using technology. The caregiver is the hidden customer. That's 60+ million people in the US alone (1 in 4 adults) and that number is only going in one direction. Exhausted, overwhelmed, and increasingly turning to digital tools for support. But most aged care technology still treats them as an afterthought. Someone to 'keep informed' rather than actively support. The businesses building genuine caregiver support into their model aren't just being compassionate, they're building loyalty with the decision-maker. → AI adoption nearly doubled in 12 months (18% → 30%) And the highest interest? AI-powered health monitoring. Not entertainment. Not productivity. Health. Adults 50+ aren't just curious about AI, they're specifically seeking tools that help them understand and manage their wellbeing. → 46% say technology enables a healthy life This signals a shift from reactive to proactive. Nearly half now see technology not as a response to decline, but as a tool for maintaining wellbeing. Preventative, personalised, proactive. It's already mainstream thinking. → Trust remains the sticking point 50% use smart home tech, but 25% cite data privacy as their top concern. And 77% struggle to tell AI-generated content from real. The opportunity? Trusted, transparent, well-governed technology will convert the hesitant majority. I've been sitting with what this means for how we design products and services, when we engage families, and where the real opportunities are. For now, one question: are you reaching families when the conversation is 'how do we plan for this?' Or when it's 'something's happened - what do we do now?

    From 'Hos-pital' to 'House-pital': Geriatric Healthcare through Digital Innovation As a #digitalmentalhealth professional, I have always been at the giving end of digital health services until the recent time when a dear family member, in his early 70’s, got discharged from the ICU almost after a week of hospitalization & digital health services came to our aid. With the tedious post discharge formalities and lengthy care giving-checklists, I could sense the #burden of care giving flushing on the face of the family members. I can vouch that ‘the burden of care giving’ is for real! The past few years have made me a student of #digitalhealth & #digitalhealthcare solutions have become my reflex reactions. I remember studying the concept of a ‘Housepital' i.e bringing hospital to home using technology. Aligned with this, we brought our family member home into a completely modified environment we termed as the ‘Housepital’. Having been a student of #neurorehabilitation in the past, I have had the privilege to learn the importance of ‘environmental modification’ especially in #geriatriccare . We modified the space, made it simple & easy to navigate, reorganized & compartmentalized medicine boxes, put flash cards with big and bold letters, and set reminders on phones, leveraged geriatric diapers and easy to remove nursing clothes. We adhered to remote patient monitoring services and appointed an at home full time qualified nursing attendant via a digital platform. Home Oxygen Concentrator, Nebulizer & CPAP machine were installed just by one dial to the vendor. We availed at home blood sample collection and ECG services. Wearable devices are no more buzzwords, we practically implemented this with the use of a smart watch to monitor vital signs, activity level and provide patient information for virtual consultations. This #digitalmindset metamorphosis not only enhanced accessibility but also redefined the experience of our #caregiving. Caregiving was not only easier and guilt free, it also empowered us to take charge of any such situations in the future. Obviously, we did face some hiccups in finding the right resources and quality care, especially finding a trained nursing professional. And that’s where the gap must be bridged in making it more equitable, accessible, scalable & hassle free. According to a recent UN report, India’s elderly population will grow at a rate of 41 % between 2021 and 2031, and by 2046 the nation will have more people above the age of 60 than people below 15 years. In the ever-evolving landscape of geriatric healthcare, the paradigm shift from traditional hospitals to personalized, home-based care is becoming increasingly the need of the hour. Today, we stand on the cusp of a healthcare revolution, where the fusion of cutting-edge innovations and digital connectivity is paving the way for better healthcare outcomes delivered right to our doorsteps. Then why not leverage it for 'at-home geriatric care' as well?

    A headline I came across recently immediately caught my attention: FDA has granted breakthrough device status to a generative AI chatbot designed to support patients recovering from surgeries at home. This confirms where healthcare is heading. I have been thinking for a while about where AI truly fits into patient care, especially at home. It’s closely tied to my work and at the same time, it’s personal: I’m always looking for innovative solutions to improve the quality of care for my mother, who lives in an assisted living facility. The reality is that private duty care is expensive. For families who need consistent or round-the-clock support, that becomes very difficult very quickly. At the same time, the demand for caregivers continues to grow, and we simply do not have enough nurses, CNAs, and home health professionals to meet the demand. Because of that, I do not see technology as optional. I see it as necessary. I have been researching remote sitting services and monitoring options, where trained professionals could oversee multiple patients through technology and step in when needed, rather than being physically present every minute of the day. If done correctly, that could lower costs for families while still protecting safety and dignity. But I also believe strongly that technology should extend, not replace, caregivers. AI can help monitor, document, and identify patterns. It can help us respond faster and use our workforce more efficiently. What it cannot do is replace presence, judgment, and human connection. No algorithm is going to hold my mom’s hand when she is scared. But if technology can help ensure someone knows immediately when she needs help, that matters. We are going to have to blend high tech with high touch in ways that support families, strengthen caregivers, and improve access to care at home. The future of patient care will require both innovation and restraint, and getting that balance right will define the next decade.

    I never thought much about network technology until I saw it save a stroke patient 47 minutes of critical treatment time That's exactly what 5G is changing It's not just making your TikTok videos load faster – it's creating a world where your grandmother's doctor knows her heart is struggling before she feels short of breath. The tech lets doctors check on patients while they're living their lives at home, guide other surgeons through complex procedures from thousands of miles away, and get critical information the moment it matters, not hours later during a scheduled appointment. My team and I have broken our brains solving the real-world problems: how to make the batteries in these devices last for weeks, not hours; how to make them small and comfortable enough that people actually wear them; how to lock down sensitive health data so it doesn't end up where it shouldn't. Is it cheap to set all this up? Hell no. Hospitals are spending millions upfront. But they're making it back within 2-3 years, and more importantly, patients aren't trapped in an endless cycle of clinic visits and hospital stays. When I think about why this matters, it's not about impressive tech specs or wireless standards. It's about real people – the grandmother who stays in her own home instead of a nursing facility, the farmer who can talk to a specialist without driving four hours each way, and the doctor who catches the subtle warning signs before the crisis hits. That's worth every engineering challenge we've faced

Here’s how AI and XR are transforming home care for the aging population: Efficiency and Automation: Technology like remote monitoring and telehealth platforms helps caregivers focus more on what matters—actual patient care. With tasks like scheduling handled automatically, more time can be spent ensuring each individual feels seen and supported.     As I work at the intersection of healthcare design and technology, certain patterns are emerging that suggest profound changes in how we'll deliver care. Here are five shifts I believe we'll see: First, AI won't just assist with decisions - it will transform how we make them. Providers will move from reviewing individual data points to understanding complex patterns across time and populations. Imagine specialists across disciplines having the time and insight to truly collaborate on complex cases: an oncologist and cardiologist deeply discussing treatment implications, supported by AI-surfaced patterns from thousands of similar cases. These rich, cross-disciplinary conversations will lead to more nuanced, coordinated care decisions. Second, as AI manages standard protocols and data analysis, provider time will shift dramatically. Instead of spending hours on documentation and routine analysis, clinicians will focus on the nuanced work of understanding patient contexts and goals. Conversations will deepen. Treatment plans will become more personalized. The human elements of care - understanding individual values, circumstances, and preferences - will take center stage. Third, care delivery will become more proactive and precise. AI will help identify subtle signs of health changes before they become critical, enabling earlier interventions. Care teams will shift from reactive response to proactive planning. Preventive care will become more targeted and effective, based on sophisticated understanding of individual risk factors and social determinants of health. Fourth, the technology itself will continuously evolve based on real-world outcomes. Treatment protocols will adapt in real time based on emerging evidence and individual patient responses. Care pathways will become more dynamic and personalized, learning from each patient interaction to improve future care delivery. Finally, these changes will reshape the physical and operational structure of healthcare. We'll need different kinds of spaces - ones designed for deeper conversations and collaborative decision-making. Workflow patterns will change as routine tasks become automated. Team structures will evolve to support more integrated, proactive care delivery. The future of healthcare delivery will require fundamentally rethinking how we provide care when technology can handle routine tasks and help us see patterns we might otherwise miss. This transformation offers an unprecedented opportunity to make healthcare more human, more proactive, and more effective.
