My first contact with Roman materials I had as a student during excavations in Novae in Bulgaria. I worked with a pottery from this site. My MA work I wrote about production of pottery in Lower Moesia. To my PhD dissertation was about Economic contacts of Novae from the Ist to the IIIrd century I collected informations about inscriptions, amphorae, terra sigillata, mortaria, glass, coins, jewellery and other kinds of small finds. All these things allowed me to create a picture of economic contacts of Novae. Publications from this area give an irregular picture of phenomena, so I moved to the area of the ancient Dacia. In my book I described the Economy in the Roman province of Upper Dacia. There I was interested in monetary circulation, mining (gold mines, silver ore, iron ore, marbles, salt), agriculture, production, transport, commerce, economic role of the army and the city aristocracy. I published articles about the use of iconographic sources in archeology like pieces of art or pottery lamps, production of salt in a Roman Empire or Roman pottery. The area of modern Poland never belonged to the Roman Empire, but there was an Amber Route here. For this reason, in Poland we have a noticeable number of Roman imports and researchers dealing with them. There are some scolars interrested in Roman coins, terra sigillata, jewellery, brooches and bronzes.

The subject of this study is the bone artifacts unearthed during the 2010-2015 excavation seasons at the Balatlar Church Excavation. These objects, which include Late Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman period finds, are categorized into three classes according to their intended use: ornamental pieces, daily use items and play materials. The quality and usage areas of the finds are important in terms of showing the intensity of the use of bone raw material according to the periods. As it is known, bone, which is an easily available and renewable resource in nature, is a raw material that has been used in the production of various objects in human life since very early times. Therefore, we witness the use of bone material in human life from the most primitive ages to the present day. When we look at the materials produced from bone material since the early ages, it is seen that there has been a simultaneous development with the industrial skills and artistic understanding of the period. At this point, the bone finds from the Balatlar Church excavation provide important data on the use of bone during the Roman, Byzantine and Late Ottoman periods. In this study, unknown examples of materials belonging to a well-known material group are introduced.

Among the numerous small finds from the excavations carried out in the years 1978/79 on the Münsterhügel in Basel (Switzerland), was an exceptionally well-made phallic bone pendant with a longitudinally-perforated crossbar.
Phallic pendants of this type belong to a Late Republican group, most of which have come from Spain and Italy while in Central Europe they are extremely rare. The Basel example originates from the late La Tène fill of a street gutter, and therefore together with the pendants from the shipwreck of Spargi in Italy and from the Ibero-Punic layer of La Alcudia at Elche in Spain confirms the Late Republican date of this group, which can be divided into four types.
Late Republican phallic bone pendants differ from the Imperial period phallic bone amulets not only by their form but also by the fact that the latter always have an erect phallus and that they are often combined with a fica.

For writing on papyrus, parchment, and even wooden tablets in antiquity the writers needed next to a black or red ink a pen (calamus). The use of feathers (quill pens) for writing with ink was first mentioned in the 7th century AD. In the Roman period the most frequent pens were made out of reed stems. They have been only very rarely preserved.
Metal pens were also used, made of a bronze sheet. They have a form of a tube, tapering to the upper end and having an obliquely cut and split lower end. It is possible that the bronze sheet pens appeared already in the 1st century AD. They were found in Italy and in the Roman provinces.
The Roman pens of bone or ivory are extremely rare. In a military camp of Carnuntum (Austria) a bone pen was found and in the important grave of S. Egidio in Aquileia (Italy) with a rich set of writing implements an ivory one, the upper end of which has a shape of a horse hoof.
