Bronze Works

The study considers two architectural elements, which display a series of affinities
that justify their parallel consideration. It is considered that both can
be assigned on stylistic grounds approximately to the mid-2nd century BC
and appear to have served a framing function, as indicated by the repertoire
characteristic of cornices. The principal decorative motif is the egg-and-dart
molding. One end of each, however, exhibits an atypical handling of elements
within this category.
The monument originating from Dionysopolis underwent transformation
during its secondary use in the Early Byzantine period, when it was recarved
into a double-window colonnette (mullion). The other, bearing the
marks of an unfinished work, was most likely also re-employed as a spolium
within the catholicon of the medieval monastery on St. Ivan Island, near Sozopol,
where it was recovered during archaeological excavations. A portion
of this latter member now survives once again as a spolium – a “trophy” –
embedded into a modern structure.
In the study of spolia more broadly, the most appropriate approach is considered
to be the correlation between the criteria of function and transformation.

Intervista a Guido Barbujani.

Guido Barbujani è tra i più importanti genetisti italiani. Dal 1996 è professore ordinario di genetica all’Università di Ferrara. Nella sua lunga carriera si è occupato delle origini e dell’evoluzione della popolazione umana. Fra le sue numerosissime pubblicazioni, citiamo "Europei senza se e senza ma. Storie di Neandertaliani e di immigrati" (Bompiani, 2008), "Gli africani siamo noi. Alle origini dell’uomo" (Laterza, 2016), "Come eravamo. Storie della grande storia dell’uomo" (Laterza, 2022) e il recente "L’alba della storia. Una rivoluzione iniziata diecimila anni fa" (Laterza, 2024).

The ancient author Thucydides testified that the Getae and other tribes near them were neighbours of the Scythians and were armed like them: they were all horsemen – archers. The indirect information about the Triballians, included in the pronoun “the others”, provided by the Greek author, is a proof that the cavalry occupied a large share of the army of these tribes. Consequently, this implies a significant demand of horse equipment and harness decoration by the Thracian aristocracy.
Similar cultural processes, contemporaneous with the 4th century BC burials in the Mogilanska tumulus, took place among the tribes of Northwestern Thrace and those living south of Haemus, along the upper reaches of the Tonzos River.
The division between Odrysians and Triballians, also noted in ancient sources, is rather formal and geographical. Arguably, this division is not so pronounced, when comparing artifacts found in rich tombs of the Odrysian aristocracy in the Kazanlak Valley, along the upper reaches of Tonzos River, with those of the tribal nobility buried in the Mogilanska tumulus.
Four identical appliques for a horse harness, of an irregular round shape, originate from Tomb No. 2 in the Mogilanska tumulus, from Binyova tumulus, from Ostrusha tumulus near the town of Shipka, Kazanlak region, from Panchova tumulus near the village of Starosel, Hissar region, and one more comes from Agighiol, north of the Danube. The triskels include a center – umbo or bird’s eye, with a sprouting three-shouldered swastika bordered by a double incised line filled with notches. Each swastika shoulder surrounds a center – a stylized bird’s eye and a beak. These are examples of the so-called “Thracian schematism” of the middle of the 4th century BC, manufactured in the same workshop, and probably even made by the same master. Given the size of the products, it is possible that these were works of itinerant craftsmen who served the Odrysian and Triballian aristocracy.
The noted similarities in workmanship, style and theme between the appliques for horse harness from the examined archaeological sites in Thrace presuppose a stable tradition and a large output to meet the demand for consumption, production and use of such items by the Thracian kings and the aristocratic elite. Judging by the geographical location of the archaeological contexts of these finds, it is most likely that the distribution of such products took place from south to north with a minimal delay in time. The function of the appliques to create splendour and ostentatious display of the horse’s harness, to demonstrate and evoke authority and economic power, makes them items of luxury, which were affordable only to the Thracian kings and the higher aristocracy. Their deposition in graves and tombs is a certain marker of a high social status of the deceased, and most likely, defines most of the buried individuals as rulers who were also warriors.

“Historia Naturalis” (Natural History), an encyclopaedia of natural science that spanned thirty-seven books. In this work, Pliny describes in detail the physical nature of the world. It includes books on geography, anthropology, zoology, botany, and the medicinal uses of plants.

The focus of the study is the bronze appliqués for horse ammunition found in the burials from the last third of the 5th century BC at the villages of Duvanlii, Plovdiv district and Golemanite, Veliko Tarnovo region. The analysis of their form, style, and iconographic features and their comparison with analogous examples that serve as prototypes, leads to the identification of their most probable origin, which coincides with one of the hypotheses about the impulses which later led to the emergence of new elements in the local artistic tradition. The article attempts to explain some of the possible causes and pathways by which objects, themes, and motifs from foreign cultures permeated Thrace, where they were used to generate prestige and mark status.

Libro IV cap 2 "Ma dopo la fondazione di Luna (577=177) non abbiamo tr accia che siansi fatti per lunghissimo tempo ulteriori assegnamenti di terreni, ad eccezione di quelli fatti alla colonia di Osimo (Auximum) piantata nel Piceno l'anno 557 (=157). La ragione non è semplice. Soggiogati i Boi e gli Apuani, e oltre le poco allettevoli valli liguri non essendosi acquistato alcun nuovo paese in Italia, non vi era altro terreno da dividere se non quello demaniale, dato a fitto od occupato, voler toccare il quale sarebbe ora riuscito all'aristocrazia non meno molesto che tre secoli addietro. Impossibile sembrava per ragioni politiche la suddivisione delle terre conquistate fuori d'Italia; questa doveva essere il paese dominante, e il muro divisorio tra i signori d'Italia e le dipendenti provincie non si poteva abbattere. Se non si voleva porre in non cale la ragione di Stato o addirittura gli interessi della classe primaria dei cittadini, null'altro rimaneva a fare al governo che starsene spettatore della rovina cui andava incontro la classe agricola d'Italia, e così fu. Sin dalle mie prime ricerche per la tesi di laurea sul c.d Deposito Votivo di "Valle Fuino" il territorio tra Cascia e Norcia, nell'estremo lembo sudorientale dell'Umbria, ha catturato il mio interesse. Sia la ricchezza che la qualità e certe volte unicità dei reperti (a partire dalla famosa Biga di Monteleone) facevano intravedere da subito un'area di grande interesse archeologico.
In 30 anni la mia visione sulla straordinaria importanza di quest'area dell'antica Sabina Montana è maturata a tal punto da voler oggi soprattutto spingere avanti quanto più possibile la ricerca, visto che il Casciano-Nursino si propone come formidabile laboratorio modello per lo studio delle zone appenniniche (pre)romane.
"Cascia 2024" è il titolo del progetto per un convegno internazionale, programmato nell'autunno dell'anno prossimo, ma vuol essere pure contenitore per qualsiasi altra iniziativa di qualità, atta a promuovere e far conoscere scientificamente questa parte dell'Italia centrale.

During the course of archaeological excavations carried out as far back as the 1960’s in Dombó, nowadays called Novi Rakovac, in the region of Srem, near the mediaeval ruins of the Benedictine monastery of Saint George, at the site referred to as gradina (hillfort), among other things, a repository of twelve applied art objects was found, among them eight square icons, not very large, cast in bronze, preserved at the Museum of Vojvodina today. Those are icons of Christ Pantocrator, the Mother of God on the throne, another icon of the Mother of God the Protectress, a dual icon of two saints, Saint Nicholas and Saint Vasily, then the icon of Saint George, as well as the icons of Saint Panteleimon and Saint Procopius. Three icons – that of St George and the two featuring the Mother of God are of particular interest on account of the inscriptions they contain. The icon of St George contain a prayer, written in Greek, to St George as the protector of farmers, wherein it is said that the one who commissioned this icon, to be made of silver (thy humble servant), petitions you for good earth. The inscriptions on the icons featuring the Mother of God are of interest because of the dialogue between the Mother of God and Christ, in which she essentially petitions the Son to save people. It is probably inspired by the hymn of St Roman the Melodist, sung even today in churches on Good Friday. As Franjo Barišić concluded in the 1960’s, the content of the inscriptions on the icons featuring the Mother of God points to the fact that they cannot date from before the 12th century, possibly from the 13th.
This gives rise to the question of the purpose of these icons. According to one assump- tion, at least some of these bronze icons were placed, in keeping with Eastern Christian cus- toms, on the architrave beam of a hypothetical Orthodox monastery, which may have been located at the site where later on the Benedictine abbey of St George was built in Dombó. However, it appears that the attempt to fit the icons in with the contents of the church inte- rior, especially the altar partition, is not convincing enough actually. The smallness of the icons, all of which measure less that 10 cm, brings this assumption into question and points to the fact that they probably served the purpose of personal expression of piety than that of a public cult.

Dieser Band enthält die Beiträge des 18. Treffens der Arbeitsgemeinschaft ‚Etrusker & Italiker‘ des Deutschen Archäologenverbands (DarV), das am 6. und 7. März 2020 am Institut für Alte Geschichte und  Altertumskunde,  Papyrologie  und  Epigraphik  der  Universität  Wien  stattgefunden  hat.  Die  Arbeitsgemeinschaft versteht sich als Gruppe von Wissenschaftler*innen der deutschsprachigen Länder, die sich in regelmäßigen Workshops und Tagungen austauschen, miteinander diskutieren und aktuelle Projekte vorstellen (https://www.darv.de/arbeitsgemeinschaften/etrusker-und-italiker/). Unter den mittler-weile  mehr  als  100  Mitgliedern  ist  die  gesamte  akademische  Bandbreite  von  Studierenden  bis  zu  Professor*innen mit den unterschiedlichsten Erfahrungen, Perspektiven und Forschungen vertreten. Anlässlich des zehnjährigen Jubiläums war es ein besonders glücklicher Umstand, das Treffen der  Arbeitsgemeinschaft  am  Gründungsort  Wien  durchführen  zu  können.  Erst  im  Nachhinein  wurde  schließlich  deutlich,  dass  diese  Jubiläumstagung  zu  Beginn  der  Pandemie  für  zwei  Jahre  das  letzte  Treffen der Arbeitsgemeinschaft in Präsenz sein würde.

Das Thema lautete ‚Gesellschaft und Familie bei Etruskern und Italikern‘, der Fokus lag dabei auf  den  familiären  Strukturen  und  ihrer  engen  Verflechtung  mit  der  sie  umgebenden  Gesellschaft  im  gesamten italischen Raum des 1. Jahrtausends v. Chr., und zwar in den unterschiedlichsten Kontexten (etwa im Grabbereich, im religiösen Feld oder in Wohn- und Siedlungskontexten). Sozialstrukturen und -dynamiken sind generell immer noch ein stark unterrepräsentiertes Themenfeld der etruskisch-italischen Forschung. Es ist deshalb umso erfreulicher, dass soziale Fragestellungen im ‚vorrömischen‘ Italien in letzter Zeit deutlich mehr Aufmerksamkeit erlangen und verstärkt diskutiert werden.

Probleme bei der Liviuslektüre Livius gilt gemeinhin als Angstgegner der Kollegiaten im Leistungskurs Latein des bayerischen Gymnasiums. Die Schwierigkeiten der Schüler mit livianischem Vokabular, Satzbau und Stil bilden dabei aber nicht das alleinige Problem. Vor allem die Textauswahl der gängigen Schulausgaben bedingt in der Praxis häufig eine Reduzierung des Autors auf die Vorstellung von Livius als einem Exempla-Autor, der literaturgeschichtlich freilich als Historiograph behandelt wird. Unter anderem ist es diese Diskrepanz, die Livius in den Augen von sonst häufig an Cicero und Seneca geschulten Abiturienten als wenig griffig erscheinen lässt, denn die Möglichkeit, einen Autor gattungsgeschichtlich einzuordnen, erleichtert den Oberstufenschülern den Zugang zu den Texten. Es ist nicht nur ein Ergebnis moderner Leseforschung, sondern auch eine alte Schul-und Lehrerweisheit, dass eine gewisse Vertrautheit mit einem Autor oder einer Textgattung die Durchdringung des zu lesenden Textes nachhaltig fördert. Dass Livius heute primär als Erzähler und nicht als Historiograph betrachtet und den Schülern vorgestellt wird, ist aber nicht die Schuld der Herausgeber von Schulausgaben, sondern resultiert aus der permanenten Auseinandersetzung der älteren klassischen Philologie mit der historischen Glaubwürdigkeit eines Autors, dem man immer wieder plumpe Geschichtsfälschung vorgeworfen hat. Es war daher nur logisch, dass die jüngere Liviusforschung sich lieber mit dem Erzähler Livius als mit dem Geschichtsschreiber auseinander setzte. Im Gegensatz zum weit verbreiteten Klischee, waren Gladiatorenkämpfe kein blutiges Gemetzel sondern ein streng regulierter Sport. Ausrüstung und Paarungen waren sorgfältig entwickelt und reguliert. Diese Übersicht präsentiert die historischen Paarungen der verschiedenen Gladiatorentypen.

This article continues the author’s paper The fibula production of Brigetio: clay moulds published in Dissertationes Archaeologicae 3.8 (2020). The main aim of this paper is the presentation of a model plus several semi-finished and waste fibulae from Brigetio, adding to our knowledge about the fibula production of this archaeological site. The objects belong to the types of the Norico–Pannonian winged fibula, Pannonian trumpet fibula, knee fibula and crossbow fibula. Their types and detailed descriptions are presented. The local distribution of the fibula variants in Brigetio and Komárom-Esztergom County is also summarized.

Les études réunies dans le présent volume sont issues des travaux d'un colloque tenu à l'université de Rouen les 25, 26 et 27 juin 2012. C'est à dessein que nous les avons regroupées par thème et non pas par aire : il nous a semblé important de confronter, à propos des mêmes thèmes, les données des différentes régions du bassin méditerranéen et les approches des chercheurs qui travaillent sur chacune de ces régions, même si un semblable classement par thèmes est souvent difficile et arbitraire. Une première série d'études porte sur les questions d'alphabet et de graphie. L'article d'Ignasi-Xavier Adiego porte sur la normalisation d'une variété d'alphabet lycien par le pouvoir politique à des fins de centralisation. Même le choix d'une forme pour tel graphème peut être un enjeu sociolinguistique significatif. Celui de Marie-Laurence Haack s'attache à un genre précis, celui des inscriptions alphabétiques étrusques, et montre que le choix de graver l'alphabet, attesté à plusieurs périodes, avait des finalités différentes selon l'époque. Marta Muscariello aborde les débuts de l'usage de l'écriture dans le Latium : les premières inscriptions, coupées de toute finalité pratique, servent de vecteur d'auto-représentation des élites. Giulia Sarullo, quant à elle, aborde le genre des textes en boustrophedon dans l'Italie archaïque : ce mode de gravure a été privilégié pour des textes officiels, contrairement à ce qui a lieu dans les aires helléniques dont ce type de gravure provient ; il y a donc là un choix fait par les populations d'Italie et non la simple reprise d'une pratique grecque. Même si les langues d'attestation fragmentaire sont pour l'essentiel documentées par des sources épigraphiques, les textes littéraires des langues classiques fournissent aussi des informations à leur sujet, y compris pour une analyse en termes de genres de textes. Manuela Anelli étudie un cas rare, celui d'une forme attestée à la fois par une inscription osque et par des glossateurs latins, et propose des hypothèses sur le statut social auquel renverrait cette forme. Barbora Machajdíková aborde pour sa part une glose latine qui pourrait renvoyer à un lexème sabellique ; son analyse montre la difficulté d'analyser de telles sources, mais aussi leur intérêt pour des champs lexicaux aussi importants que celui du rituel, en complément des textes épigraphiques eux-mêmes. L'étude linguistique et la grammaire comparée peuvent bien entendu être associées à l'analyse des sources épigraphiques en termes de genres et de contexte social. José Luis García Ramón tente par exemple, à partir d'inscriptions lyciennes et des données de la comparaison, de reconstituer une terminologie des institutions sociales et sa préhistoire. Gerhard Meiser propose une étude syntaxique des Tables Eugubines : il montre comment, dans le cadre d'un genre très précis, celui de la description de rituels, les prêtres ombriens pouvaient introduire des variations correspondant à leurs préférences

Italian town c. 165 km north of Rome. It is situated on a tufa hill and surrounded by extensive Etruscan necropolises. Beneath the streets of the modern town runs a labyrinth of Etruscan galleries. Ancient Camars (known by its Latin name, Clusius) was one of the members of the Etruscan 12-city league and an important centre midway between southern and northern Etruria. Many local finds are displayed in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Chiusi. During the 7th century B C Chiusi began to coalesce from a network of scattered settlements, and its most numerous and characteristic products of this Orientalizing period

In this paper, the various contributions to the genetic makeup of modern-day northern Italy (the former Cisalpine Gaul) are presented, concentrating on the U152 marker. U152 is commonly seen as the genetic trace of La Tène Celts, being understood that its origins are more remote. On the basis of its diffusion maps, we claim that a possible origin for this marker is the repopulation of Europe after the Last Ice Age. U152 would then have been brought to northern and central Italy and parts of central Europe from where, thanks to the Cisalpine and central European Celts, it would have been spread to the whole Celtic world.  U152 mainly traces the spread of La Tène Celts, so that it is a minority contribution in such areas as Britain and Iberia, where Latenization did not involve massive migrations. As for the non-Celtic areas where the marker is present, albeit as a minority contribution, we have to consider the spread of Italics to parts of southern Italy and Latins and Italics throughout the Roman world.

Starting from the four staffs with club-shaped pommels, which were found in the »kings’s grave« of Spoleto, the author goes on a search for objects from Etruscan and Italic burials which can be interpreted as sceptres.
It is not always easy to differentiate these from simple weapons, as the boundaries are blurred and even a profane club can become a ritual weapon and an insignia of power. By using individual find contexts, pictorial representations and comparisons with other cultures (Assyria, Egypt), however, one can succeed in proving
certain forms of sceptres archaeologically. Thus, the article provides an overview and a classification of the ascertainable types of sceptres, whereby female insignia are also considered. In addition, the question of which concrete privileges of power were connected with sceptres in Italy from the 9th to 6th century BC is pursued. By that, various actual and symbolic functional levels become apparent which allow one to indicate political, military, judicial and ritual-religious components carried out by the ruler.

L’insegnamento della Storia antica in un corso di laurea in Scienze della Formazione Primaria pone docenti e discenti di fronte a due importanti nodi problematici: da un lato, la vastità dell’arco cronologico da coprire (dal Vicino Oriente alla caduta dell’impero romano d’Occidente) e dei contesti geografici, nonché l’ampiezza delle metodologie di ricerca chiamate in causa; dall’altro, la necessità di limitare la conoscenza storica del mondo antico a una cursoria ma comunque esauriente sintesi d’insieme, data l’incompatibilità del sistema dei crediti formativi con l’adozione di manuali specifici per le singole epoche.
Il presente volume vuole essere per l’appunto uno strumento di studio agile e al contempo esaustivo, capace di dare risposta alle esigenze specifiche di questo corso di laurea.

The dissertation examines the evolution of the National Archaeological Museums from the time of the unification of Italy in 1861 to its 50th anniversary in 1911. The four national archaeological museums of Naples, Turin, Florence and Rome form the subject of this research. They reflect in compressed form a conceptual change in the museums of antiquity: from a manorial collection to a collection based mainly on excavation finds. The work is divided into the following three aspects: (1) the administrative standardisation of museums, (2) the public perception and conveyance of ancient art in Italy, and (3) the presentation and conveyance of ancient art in the exhibition space. The work comes to the following conclusions: (1) In the search for a national identity, the interest of the young kingdom is primarily directed towards its own ancient cultural assets. For their protection and communication, special management and administrative structures are set up. National archaeological museums are given an explicit research mandate. (2) The history of reception of the Etruscans in the 19th century plays a special role, insofar as Etruscan Style elements have already been integrated into the stately representation under the Savoyen house. Additionally, contemporary newspaper reports and European travel literature (Baedeker, Murray and Hachette) demonstrate a continuous perception and awareness of Etruscan achievements. (3) The provenance of the exhibits becomes the decisive criterion for stock formation, determines their arrangement in the exhibition space and becomes the theme of the presentation. Finally, cultural policy development results retrospectively from the situation of the imperial capital. The emphasis on the prestige of the Etruscan continues as long as Turin and then Florence were the seat of government. With Rome as the capital, the positive image of the Etruscan is increasingly replaced by that of the Roman. Instead of overcoming the continual connotation of Rome in Europe as the ‘eternal city’ and symbol of the Roman empire, it is even stronger pronounced on the occasion of Italy’s 50th anniversary. The Roman becomes the instrument of nationalism and later of fascism.

E chiaro, limpido come l'acqua di Cala Moresca a Baratti-Piombino, che essi arrivano dal mare. Chi sono? Da dove vengono? Non si sa! Sappiamo solo che la loro lingua e la cultura dominante è 'semita', come pure la loro lingua un mix di ebraico antico ed aramaico. Si stanziano sulle coste vicino al Tevere e costruiscono le loro prime città fatte di villaggi (con tende particolari) Sono 'idolatri', soloperché adora il Sole. Si dubita, cioè si ha l'impressione dallo 'stile' dei loro oggetti e di loro abiti, scarpe etc. che essi siano un mix di popoli ed etnie dell'Indo prima ancora di essere della Mesopotamia. Poi creano le prime città tutte sul Tevere o vicino allo stesso fiume, fra queste Cerveteri, Veio, Tarquinia, Vulci, Vetulonia. Ad essi il mare non interessa per fare i bagni ma solo per navigare ed affrontare le flotte nemiche, che verrebbero a razziare ed uccidere uomini, donne e bambini nelle loro città. Vivono dunque tranqulli fino all'inizio del VIII sec. a.C. La loro agricoltura, è fiorentissima, anche l'allevamento. Esportano in ogni dove, con le loro barche da carico, dei chiattoni a scafo piatto ed una sola vela. I popoli vicini sono invidiosi della loro subitanea ricchezza, erano anche ottimi fonditori e cesellatori. Sempre VII a.C. cominciano le prime incursioni Celtiche dal Nord della Francia, ma gli Etruschi sono troppo potenti e le respingono. I guai maggiori arrivano verso il V sec. a.C con i Greci. Questi non fanno scherzi, invadono, rubano, incendiano, uccidono. E la città cominciano già a barcollare. Decidono di unire le forze e eleggono come capitale Tarquinia, dove si raduneranno una volta l'anno e parleranno e scriveranno tutti con la stessa lingua, con l'alfabeto greco antico, ereditato dall'Isola di Cuma, già loro colonia. L'inizio del V secolo a.C. vede capitolare, proprio nel mare che essi dominavano da decenni, a Talamone, le lro navi con migliaia dei loro soldati uccisi. Molti etruschi, riescono a rifarsi una vita in loco molti scapperanno, chi sulle montagne chi verso il nord. Scacceranno i Celti, i Liguri e si insedieranno nelle loro proprietà. In Mugello scacceranno i Celti e molti saranno uccisi dai Greci. Un vero sterminio. Gli Etruschi e i Celti o si acorderanno con essi o scapperanno verso il nord Ovest del Mugello e dell'alto Mugello, e molti si rifugerannmo nelle montagne, dove scacceranno gli aborigeni che vivevano nelle grotte e adorando gli idoli (vedi Montesenario). Questo successe con l battaglia di Cuma. I Greci imposero le loro Leggi e gravose tasse e costruirono nuovi templi. Un esempio per tutti, a Corella (Pelago-Firenze) eressero una Fortezza di grandissime dimensioni con un Tempio, dotato di un portico con colonne. Questo

Etrusko-italische Studien" widmet sich der Gesellschaft der Etrusker und vereint 27 Beiträge einer internationalen Tagung, die 2016 in Wien stattfand. Sozialgeschichtliche Fragestellungen gehören zu jenen Gebieten der Etruskologie, die in der Forschung bisher eher sporadisch und kaum übergreifend behandelt worden sind. Die einzelnen Beiträge decken den Zeitraum von der Villanovazeit bis zum Aufgehen im römischen Reich ab und beschäftigen sich in Form von Einzelanalysen auf der Basis der archäologischen, epigraphischen und (nicht etruskischen) literarischen Quellen mit einem weiten Spektrum an sozialhistorisch relevanten Themenkomplexen. Dabei liegt der Schwerpunkt des Sammelbandes auf den Prozessen der gesellschaftlichen Hierarchisierung, thematisiert werden Genese und Selbstrepräsentation sowie Beziehungspflege innerhalb der eigenen sozialen Schichten bzw. Gruppen, aber auch darüber hinaus. Naturgemäß spielen dabei die etruskischen Eliten eine wichtige Rolle, was sich an der ganzen Reihe von Beiträgen zeigt, die sich der Analyse der Oberschichten vor allem archaischer und hellenistischer Zeit widmen. Parallel dazu sind die Frage der "Mittelschicht" und eine klarere Annäherung an die heterogene Gruppe der sogenannten "Unterprivilegierten" in den Stadtstaaten Etruriens ein Anliegen des Bandes. Der Bedeutung des Wandels der Militärorganisation für die gesellschaftliche Entwicklung wird ebenfalls Rechnung getragen. Beiträge zur Mobilität und Integration von Fremden in Etrurien sowie zu religiösen Praktiken (Körperteilvotive) beleuchten darüber hinaus das komplexe Themenfeld aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln.

Um 600 v. Chr. gründeten Zuwanderer aus Phokäa im östlichen Teil des in weitem Bogen sich erstreckenden Golfe du Lion die Stadt Massalia, das heutige Marseille. Die neue Kolonie blickte gleichzeitig auf das Hinterland der Kelten und das westliche Mittelmeer der Etrusker und Karthager. Sie beschleunigte den ökonomischen Wettbewerb, in dem landwirtschaftliche Produkte, wie Wein und Öl, Rohstoffe (in erster Linie Metalle) und qualitativ hochwertige Kunsthandwerkserzeugnisse, in einem komplexen und anhand der archäologischen Zeugnisse gut nachvollziehbaren Netzwerk verhandelt wurden, auf erstaunliche Weise. Die sich rasant entwickelnde ostgriechische Handelsaktivität wurde durch professionelle Schiffseigner und Händler ermöglicht. Darin unterschied sie sich von dem früheren, längst überkommenen Modell des Austauschs von Geschenken zwischen Aristokraten, der für den Handel der orientalisierenden Periode kennzeichnend war. Sie fand auf etruskischer Seite eine angemessene Resonanz in der Schaffung und dem Ausbau von Hafenorten, welche eigens dafür gedacht waren, fremde Seeleute aufzunehmen: Es handelt sich dabei um Areale in der Nähe wichtiger Stadtstaaten, wie zum Beispiel Pyrgi für Caere oder Gravisca für Tarquinia, die aber dennoch außerhalb lagen und eine Verbindung mit Heiligtümern oftmals weiblicher Gottheiten besaßen, welche auch für nicht etruskische Kulte offen waren. In dieser durch mehrere Kulturen geprägten Umgebung rückte der Anteil an Ostgriechen in der zweiten Hälfte des 6. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. nach der Eroberung von Phokäa durch den persischen Heerführer Harpagos besonders in den Vordergrund. Hierin dürfen wir den Antrieb ## Seite 24 Kapitel 23.0 Die Etrusker waren keine Griechen. Sie sprachen keine mit dem Griechischen verwandte Sprache. Sie praktizierten eine Religion, die trotz gewisser Ähnlichkeiten weit von jener der Griechen entfernt war. Und in ihrem Alltag und ihren sozialen Beziehungen pflegten sie Umgangsformen sowie Rechtsbräuche, die auf eine ganz andere Mentalität hinweisen. Dennoch näherte ihre Kultur sich im Lauf der Zeit zunehmend griechischen Vorbildern an, die fast immer als maßgeblich empfunden wurden, und zwar bis zu einem Grad, an dem es uns bei der Betrachtung des Handwerks und der bildenden Kunst schwerfällt, die genuin einheimische Komponente zu benennen. Dennoch waren sich die Etrusker und ihre Zeitgenossen, die über sie in griechischer Sprache schrieben, ihrer kulturellen Eigentümlichkeiten völlig bewusst. Sie glaubten, diese mithilfe legendenhafter Traditionen, wie der von den pelasgischen Vorfahren, welche die Ursprünge der Etrusker in ein prähistorisches Griechentum zurückprojizierten, genealogisch begründen zu können. Das kann dazu verleiten, sich die etruskische Kultur als eine, wenn auch wichtige Randerscheinung der griechischen vorzustellen -eine Anschauung, geprägt vom Vorurteil der Unselbstständigkeit der Etrusker und einem gräkozentrischen und letztendlich "kolonialistischen" Weltbild. Um sich einem solch allzu simplen Denkschema zu entziehen, erscheint eine exakte Fokussierung auf Zeiten, Beweggründe und Auswirkungen der interkulturellen Beziehung zwischen Etruskern und Griechen notwendig. Dieses Wechselverhältnis entwickelte sich -wenn man die Vorgeschichte des späten 2. Jahrtausends v. Chr. ausblendet, da man in dieser Zeit von Etruskern im eigentlichen Sinn noch nicht sprechen kann -immerhin über rund 600 Jahre, von den Anfängen der orientalisierenden Periode bis in die hellenistische Zeit.

Banquet images and their ideological content – in Etruria and beyond

The motif of banqueting, i.e. representations of solemn dining and/or drinking, played an important role on monuments and objects of the most varied kind through the whole antiquity. Not depending on the single context it generally symbolised a peaceful and pleasant, positivly connotated and therefore desirable state of life that required certain economic means.
Following distinctive criteria inherent in these representations, such as number and gender of the banqueters as well as their posture, four basic types of banquet scenes can be identified: single banquet, banqueting couple, family banquet, collective banquet. As a multi-year research project focusing on funerary banquet and drinking scenes in the pre-hellenistic Mediterranean area (“Banquet and grave”, FWF-project P 20953-G02, directed by P. Amann and P. Ruggendorfer) underlined, these types carry different messages as regards self-representation and ideology of the principal. The single banquet tends to elevate the represented’s status toward higher spheres, the banqueting couple adds the female element to the male banqueter, focusing ultimately on aspects of fertility and the cycle of life and death. The family banquet by its inclusion of legitimate children underlines the prosperous, well-organised ‘oikos’ and the central role of the founder and head of the family, whereas the collective, multifigured banquet/drinking feast defines association with a particular social group or class therefore presenting a wide range of compositional variations. The functional contexts of objects and monuments adorned by banquet scenes as well as the frequency of the single types are linked to the socio-political structures and vary between different cultural landscapes.
In the article the above-named banquet types are discussed by presenting characteristic examples from Etruria (7th-1st centuries B.C.), which by the majority belong to the sepulcral sphere. Comparisons with corresponding representations from other cultural regions of the ancient Mediterranean put the Etruscan evidence in a larger context, showing differences, but also similarities in the client’s intention. With regard to the Etruscan situation a detailed analyse reveals chronological and local peculiarities reflecting differences in the socio-political structure of the individual city-states.
