Differential Modulation

A serially concatenated coding system which can operate without channel state information (CSI) with use of a simple channel estimation technique is presented. This channel estimation technique utilizes the inner decoder's a posteriori probability (APP) information about the transmitted symbols to form a channel estimate for each symbol interval, and is termed APP channel estimation. The serially concatenated code (SCC) is comprised of an outer rate 2/3 binary error control code, separated by a bit interleaver from an inner code consisting of an 8-PSK bit mapping and differential 8-PSK modulation. Coherent decoding results in performance 0.6 dB from 8-PSK capacity for large interleaver sizes. APP channel estimation decoding without CSI over constant, random walk and linear channel phase models shows near-coherent results, with fractions of a dB loss in turbo cliff for the random walk phase model.

Pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) is widely used to obtain the channel state information (CSI) needed for coherent demodulation. It allows the density of pilot symbols to be dynamically chosen depending on the channel conditions. However, the insertion of pilots reduces the spectral efficiency, more severely when the channel is highly time-variant and/or frequency-selective. In these cases a significant amount of pilots is required to properly track the channel variations in both time and frequency dimensions. Alternatively, non-coherent demodulation does not require any CSI for the demodulation independently of the channel conditions. For the particular case of up-link (UL) based on massive single input-multiple output (SIMO) combined with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), we propose to replace the traditional reference signals of PSAM by a new differentially-encoded data stream that can be non-coherently detected. The latter can be demodulated without the knowledge of the CSI and subsequently used for the channel estimation. We denote our proposal as hybrid demodulation scheme (HDS) because it exploits both the benefits of a coherent demodulation scheme (CDS) and a non-coherent demodulation scheme (NCDS) to increase the spectral efficiency. The mean squared error (MSE) of the channel estimation, bit error rate (BER), achieved throughput and complexity are analyzed to highlight the benefits of this differential data-aided channel estimation as compared to other approaches. We show that the channel estimation is almost as good as PSAM, while the BER performance and throughput are improved for different channel conditions with a very small complexity increase.

This paper provides a comparative study on the performance of different modulation options for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in terms of their spectral efficiency, reliability, peak-to-average power ratio, power efficiency, out-of-band emission, and computational complexity. The modulation candidates are classified into two main categories based on the signal plane dimension they exploit. These categories are: 1) 2-D signal plane category including conventional OFDM with classical fixed or adaptive QAM modulation and OFDM with differential modulation, where information is conveyed in changes between two successive symbols in the same subcarrier or between two consecutive subcarriers in the same OFDM symbol and 2) 3-D signal plane category encompassing: a) index-based OFDM modulation schemes which include: i) spatial modulation OFDM, where information is sent by the indices of antennas along with conventional modulated symbols and ii) OFDM with index modulation, where the subcarriers' indices are used to send additional information; b) number-based OFDM modulation schemes which include OFDM with subcarrier number modulation, in which number of subcarriers is exploited to convey additional information; and c) shape-based OFDM modulation schemes which include OFDM with pulse superposition modulation, where the shape of pulses is introduced as a third new dimension to convey additional information. Based on the provided comparative study, the relationship and interaction between these different modulation options and the requirements of future 5G networks are discussed and explained. This paper is then concluded with some recommendations and future research directions.

BACKGROUND: Tumour necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) induces tumour cell apoptosis by binding to death receptor 4 (DR4) and DR5. DR4 and DR5 activation however can also induce inflammatory and pro-survival signalling. It is not known how these different cellular responses are regulated and what the individual role of DR4 vs DR5 is in these processes. METHODS: DNA microarray study was carried out to identify genes differentially expressed after DR4 and DR5 activation. RT-PCR and western blotting was used to examine the expression of early growth response gene-1 (Egr-1) and the proteins of the TRAIL signalling pathway. The function of Egr-1 was studied by siRNA-mediated knockdown and overexpression of a dominant-negative version of Egr-1. RESULTS: We show that the immediate early gene, Egr-1, regulates TRAIL sensitivity. Egr-1 is constitutively expressed in colon cancer cells and further induced upon activation of DR4 or DR5. Our results also show that DR4 mediates a type II, mitochondriondependent apoptotic pathway, whereas DR5 induces a mitochondrion-independent, type I apoptosis in HCT15 colon carcinoma cells. Egr-1 drives c-FLIP expression and the short splice variant of c-FLIP (c-FLIP S) specifically inhibits DR5 activation. CONCLUSION: Selective knockdown of c-FLIP S sensitises cells to DR5-induced but not DR4-induced apoptosis and Egr-1 exerts an effect as an inhibitor of the DR5-induced apoptotic pathway, possibly by regulating the expression of c-FLIP S .
