Tierra de Cáceres conserva uno de los conjuntos más elocuentes y a la vez más enigmáticos del occidente peninsular: centenares de tumbas excavadas directamente en la roca granítica. Diseminadas en colinas suaves, afloramientos de lanchares y bolos, junto a cursos de agua o próximas a antiguas vías de comunicación, estas estructuras constituyen un testimonio material que, pese a su aparente simplicidad formal, encierra una complejidad histórica notable. El fenómeno no es exclusivo de Extremadura. Las tumbas excavadas en la roca constituyen uno de los vestigios arqueológicos más abundantes de la Península Ibérica, con hallazgos que se extienden desde Cataluña hasta Andalucía, quedando al margen determinadas zonas del Norte Cantábrico. Sin embargo, en la Tierra de Cáceres su densidad, variedad tipológica y estado de conservación convierten el territorio en un auténtico laboratorio para el estudio del tránsito entre el mundo romano y el medieval. La tierra aparentemente silenciosa revela, a quien la observa con detenimiento, las huellas de comunidades que eligieron inscribir su relación con la muerte directamente en el paisaje. Desde un punto de vista académico, el desafío es aún mayor: interpretar cronológicamente y funcionalmente estructuras que, en su inmensa mayoría, han perdido el contexto arqueológico que permitiría una datación precisa. Uno de los rasgos más llamativos de estas tumbas es que casi ninguna ha conservado restos humanos. Carecen igualmente

SINOPSIS: El espejo del Quattrocento

El hallazgo más fecundo del Volumen 9 de Educación Transdisciplinar es de orden hermenéutico, y es también el que vuelve al libro tan oportuno para el presente. El siglo XV no se lee aquí como reliquia venerable, sino como un siglo bisagra que se atraviesa como un puente: se entra por una orilla medieval y se sale por otra que ya anuncia la modernidad, sin saber muy bien cuándo cambió el paisaje. Esa transición se reconoce como una repetición, agravada y reconocible, de nuestra propia encrucijada. La crisis que hoy atravesamos —la fragmentación del saber, el desarraigo simbólico, la erosión de la palabra pública, la mercantilización de la educación, el vaciamiento espiritual de la cultura tecnocrática, la urgencia ecológica y el cansancio antropológico— no carece de precedentes: tiene su espejo en el Quattrocento. Por eso aquellas trece voces vuelven a sonar con una cercanía que sorprende, y no como antiguallas sino como contemporáneas que nos hablan al oído de cuestiones que la educación dominante ha olvidado plantearse. Si la conciencia moderna nació de una crisis análoga a la nuestra, las herramientas que entonces se forjaron siguen estando, hoy mismo, disponibles.


De ese fondo común emergen varios núcleos conceptuales especialmente adecuados para educar en el tiempo presente. El primero es la docta ignorancia de Nicolás de Cusa, que se ofrece como antídoto frente al dogmatismo de la cultura tecnocrática: saber que cuanto más sabios somos más sabemos de nuestra propia ignorancia constituye hoy una pedagogía de la humildad intelectual ante la arrogancia de la certeza algorítmica y la saturación informativa. En Cusa, además, ese reconocimiento del límite no conduce a la resignación, sino que abre el germen explícito de un pensamiento complejo y transdisciplinar —coincidencia de los opuestos, principio hologramático, conjetura, la pregunta como motor del conocimiento—, que es la respuesta más directa del libro a la fragmentación del saber y el fundamento de toda educación que aspire a religar lo que la especialización ha desmembrado.


A ese principio se suma la afirmación de la dignidad ontológica y la autoplasticidad del ser humano que formula Giovanni Pico della Mirandola. Frente al cansancio antropológico y a los reduccionismos que fijan al humano en una naturaleza dada —ya sea biológica, mercantil o determinista—, la idea de un ser sin esencia clausurada, libre de hacerse a sí mismo y comprendido como microcosmos que recapitula el universo, devuelve a la educación su tarea más esencial: no programar conductas ni adiestrar competencias, sino posibilitar que cada persona despliegue una conciencia que todavía está por hacerse. La modernidad, recuerda el libro, no comienza en Descartes, sino mucho antes, cuando Pico della Mirandola escribe que el ser humano no tiene una naturaleza fija sino la libertad de configurarse.


Un tercer núcleo concibe la conciencia como interioridad encarnada y afectiva, y atraviesa a figuras como Jean Gerson, Tomás de Kempis, Margery Kempe e Isabel de Villena. La teología afectiva, la cognitio experimentalis, la sindéresis entendida como conciencia moral originaria, y el reconocimiento del cuerpo, del llanto y de la narración del propio yo como lugares legítimos de conocimiento, rehabilitan justamente aquello que la cultura del rendimiento ha expulsado del aula. Esta corriente es la que tiende los puentes más vivos con la fenomenología, la neurociencia afectiva, la cognición situada y las prácticas contemplativas contemporáneas, y permite recuperar una idea de aprendizaje que no separe el pensar del sentir ni el saber del vivir.


El cuarto concepto es la justicia epistémica y la palabra pública, que el libro encarna sobre todo en Christine de Pizan, Isotta Nogarola y Laura Cereta. Su crítica a la misoginia como una forma de injusticia epistémica, su defensa apasionada de la igualdad intelectual de las mujeres y la noción de una conciencia resistente resultan hoy plenamente actuales ante la erosión de la palabra pública y las nuevas desigualdades cognitivas. En estas humanistas la escritura aparece como práctica de conciencia y la soledad reflexiva, incluso la reclusión forzada, se transforma en un espacio productivo de subjetivación y de palabra propia: un recordatorio de que educar la conciencia es también devolver a cada persona el derecho a tomar la palabra.


A ello se añade la concepción de la pedagogía como cuidado del alma, presente en Marsilio Ficino y de nuevo en Gerson. Cuando Ficino describe el alma como nudo y vínculo de todas las cosas, funda una educación entendida como ligadura y como sentido, no como acumulación de contenidos ni rendición de cuentas. Esta es, quizá, la objeción más honda que el libro opone a la mercantilización de la enseñanza y al vaciamiento espiritual de la cultura: la convicción de que no puede haber educación verdaderamente integral que no eduque la conciencia, ni educación de la conciencia que no sea, en su raíz misma, transdisciplinar. Junto a ella, el humanismo cívico de Leonardo Bruni y el sueño de un diálogo entre todas las tradiciones —griega, hebrea, árabe y cristiana— en Pico ofrecen un modelo de palabra libre y de hospitalidad intelectual frente al desarraigo y al cierre identitario, situando la educación como práctica de libertad ((FREIRE, Paulo. La educación como práctica de la libertad. Madrid: Siglo XXI, 1976)) como condición misma de la ciudadanía.


Lo más logrado del volumen, y lo más útil para el momento actual, es que el libro no propone regresar al siglo XV, sino reconocer que en sus conventos, cortes humanistas, celdas de recluidas voluntarias y academias platónicas se gestó el modo moderno de habitar la conciencia, y que esa génesis contiene recursos que la modernidad tardía ha dilapidado. La arquitectura constante de cada capítulo —apuntes biográficos, aportaciones fundamentales, correlatos contemporáneos y principios educativos y pedagógicos— es precisamente lo que traduce la erudición histórica en pedagogía viva: cada figura termina entregando principios accionables para el presente. Y el epílogo, al mostrar cómo el humanismo florentino, la Devotio Moderna, el aristotelismo paduano y la mística renano-flamenca confluyen y se transforman en Erasmo y Pomponazzi, deja clara la apuesta de fondo: la conciencia no se hereda intacta, sino transformándose. Es, en última instancia, la misma convicción que sostiene la Educación de la Conciencia: no se trata de conservar el pasado, sino de dejarse interpelar por él para repensar, desde su luz, la crisis civilizatoria que hoy nos habita.

Kości zwierzęce i przedmioty kościane stanowią jedne z najczęściej występujących pozostałości związanych z przebywaniem człowieka na danym obszarze. Zjawisko to jest obserwowane przez archeologów analizujących tego typu materiały już od okresu paleolitu aż po czasy współczesne. Odkrywane pokonsumpcyjne szczątki zwierzęce, półprodukty oraz przedmioty użytkowe są poddawane gruntownym analizom, dostarczając informacji o życiu i kulturze naszych przodków. Z obszaru wzgórza wawelskiego można wyróżnić dotychczas publikowany zbiór zabytków związanych z jedną z najstarszych faz osadniczych, reprezentowaną przez kulturę łużycką, a także z okresem osadniczym, identyfikowanym z fazą wczesnośredniowieczną. W przypadku kontekstu prahistorycznego obiekty te są rozpoznane i dobrze zidentyfikowane w wawelskich zbiorach, co znalazło odzwierciedlenie między innymi w wystawie Pradzieje Wawelu. W przypadku obiektów późnośredniowiecznych i nowożytnych publikacje tego typu artefaktów są w pewien sposób niedoreprezentowane. W trakcie badań terenowych często giną one w licznych zbiorach fragmentów naczyń i pokonsumpcyjnych kości. Dodatkowo w odniesieniu do tego typu zabytków istotne znaczenie mają kwestie wypierania obiektów kościanych przez wyroby z surowców takich jak stal czy żelazo, co jest widoczne w profilach warsztatowych i wytwórczych poszczególnych rzemieślników. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza przedmiotów kościanych na tle materiałów ruchomych odkrytych w trakcie badań archeologicznych na obszarze wawelskiego międzymurza w latach 2023–2024.

Ceramika lošticka należy do charakterystycznych wyrobów późnośredniowiecznego garncarstwa Europy Środkowej. Jej nazwa wywodzi się od miejscowości Loštice, położonej nad rzeką Třebůvką w pobliżu Ołomuńca na Morawach, gdzie funkcjonowało główne centrum produkcyjne. Ośrodek ten najprawdopodobniej istniał już we wczesnym średniowieczu. Jego rozwój był związany ze specyficznymi warunkami geologicznymi, przede wszystkim obecnością bogatych złóż glin kaolinowych w Masnicach i Lišnicach oraz złóż grafitu w rejonie  Svinova i Zavadilki. Surowce te umożliwiały wytwarzanie naczyń o szczególnych właściwościach fizycznych. Wraz z rozwojem technologii wypału ceramiki oraz konstrukcji pieców pozwalających na osiąganie wyższych temperatur uzyskano naczynia o odmiennym wyglądzie. Tak zwany efekt lošticki, w postaci bąblowatej, chropowatej powierzchni naczyń, był wynikiem połączenia tłustej gliny, grafitu, pirytu oraz temperatury wypału sięgającej 1200°C. Choć zjawisko to początkowo mogło mieć charakter przypadkowy, w XV wieku zostało świadomie opanowane i wykorzystane jako cecha wyróżniająca lokalnie produkowaną ceramikę. Omawiane naczynia, dzięki swojej trwałości, nieprzepuszczalności oraz unikalnej estetyce, zyskały uznanie wśród zamożniejszych warstw społecznych, a ich dystrybucja objęła rozległe obszary Europy. Poza funkcją użytkową naczynia te pełniły również rolę towarów prestiżowych, o czym świadczą egzemplarze oprawiane w metale szlachetne oraz ich przedstawienia ikonograficzne w sztuce niderlandzkiej i niemieckiej (ryc. 1)6. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest prezentacja naczynia odkrytego w zbiorach archeologicznych Zamku Królewskiego na Wawelu w 2025 roku.

Around the Battle of Vaslui (1474-1475). Reflections on the Relations between the Kingdom of Hungary, Moldavia and Wallachia. The events in late autumn 1474 and winter 1475 connect and illuminate, in a particular fashion, the distinctive political features of three states, Hungary, Moldavia and Wallachia, caught up in the same frontier environment, in front of the Ottoman Empire. While, Hungary and Moldavia are intimately linked with the ambitions and habits of their rulers, Mathias Corvinus (1458-1490) and Stephen the Great (1457-1504, Wallachia resembles a medieval orphan with several foster parents, both from inside or outside Wallachia, north and south as well, eager to assure their own safety by maintaining control over the state south of the Carpathians. А decisive role, nonetheless temporary inside the area's political pattern, was played by the battle of Vaslui in January 1475, which marked Stephen's emergency as a European ruler and opened the way for Matthias' brief return to the southern front, while assuring the space for a small inside look on a struggle for survival, covered by ambitions. Therefore, its chronological impact stretches.

This article is devoted to the analysis and interpretation of the iconographic sculpture of the so-called Światowid from Zbruch. The aim of the article is to concisely summarize the state of research on this monument and to consider the stylistic features of the statue that support the thesis of its Turkish origins.

Во второй половине III в. н.э. происходит угасание и размывание основных черт саргатской культуры. Существующая схема историко-культурного развития в западном ареале Тоболо-Иртышья, выстроенная с учетом последовательной сменяемости
культур, предполагает для лесостепной территории преемственность саргатской и бакальской культур. В последнее время предлагается точка зрения, согласно которой «на сложение бакальской культуры, кроме саргатской, повлияли позднесарматский мир Приуралья… и кочевники Приаралья», а в качестве доказательств внешнему компоненту становления и формирования новых традиций приводятся характерные типы ременной гарнитуры и украшений, высокие коэффициенты сходства погребального обряда, искус-
ственная деформация черепов и т.п. [Матвеева, Зеленков, 2018; Матвеева и др., 2021; 2022 и т.д.]. Не оспаривая в целом пеструю картину процессов культурогенеза финала раннего железного века, авторы акцентируют внимание на диагностических признаках саргатской и позднесарматской культур, а также на существующих датировках лесостепных и степных древностей.

L’Archivio Disegni della Soprintendenza Speciale Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio (SSABAP) di Roma custodisce un piccolo nucleo di disegni originali di Maria Barosso dedicati agli interventi di scavo e restauro condotti dalla Regia Soprintendenza ai Monumenti del Lazio, tra la fine degli anni Trenta e gli inizi degli anni Quaranta del secolo scorso, all’interno delle chiese romane di San Cesareo de Appia e di Santo Stefano al III miglio della via Latina.

(As delivered at Bristol CMS PGR Conference 2026) The conversion of the Sueves from Arianism to Catholicism in sixth-century Gallaecia represents a unique intersection of religious power and cultural performance within the early medieval West. This paper explores how the Suevic Church asserted its distinct identity through institutional and liturgical innovations, particularly as evidenced in the Parochiale Suevum and the proceedings of the Council of Lugo (c. 569). Far from being a passive recipient of Catholic orthodoxy, the Suevic kingdom actively negotiated its place within the broader ecclesiastical hierarchy, crafting a model of territorial organisation and episcopal authority that diverged from Visigothic norms.
The Parochiale Suevum, a rare document detailing diocesan boundaries and parish structures, serves as a performative text of power – materialising the Suevic Kingdom’s claim to ecclesiastical autonomy and reinforcing royal authority through geographical control. Similarly, the Council of Lugo functioned as a stage for the public enactment of Catholic orthodoxy, where conciliar decrees not only standardised doctrine but also dramatized the Suevic monarchy’s role as a guarantor of faith. These developments illuminate how conversion was not merely a theological shift but a political performance, embedding Catholicism within the fabric of Suevic identity.
By situating these phenomena within the theme of “Power and Performance,” this paper argues that the Suevic Church exemplifies a distinctive model of religious governance in the post-Roman West – one that fused spiritual legitimacy with territorial sovereignty. Through an analysis of conciliar acts, administrative texts, and their symbolic implications, this study will reveal how ecclesiastical structures became instruments of royal power and markers of cultural uniqueness. In doing so, it contributes to broader discussions on the performative dimensions of authority and the role of local agency in shaping medieval Christianity.

In the Middle Ages, just like today, the oak was among the most widespread tree genera in the area between the Drava and Sava rivers. Therefore, the oak is very often mentioned in the written sources of the time, especially in connection with the demarcation of the boundaries between the land holdings (so-called "perambulations", or reambulationes in Latin). These documents, without exception, were written in Latin, yet in them various words for oak – as well as for other plant species and generally natural objects appearing in this context – were recorded not only in Latin, but also in the then-spoken languages of this region, Slavic (Croatian) and Hungarian. Common Latin words for 'oak' were quercus and (somewhat unexpectedly) ilex. Hungarian words were usually tölgy and less often magyal, along with cser (borrowed from Slavic). Regular Slavic words for the oak genus were dub and dob (their older form being dǫbъ) and cer. The dendronym hrast, which is dominant in Croatian today, appeared with the same meaning in Latin charters in the early 13th century, and – within the borders of the Hungarian-Croatian Kingdom – first in the area of medieval Slavonia (between the Gvozd mountain and the Drava). This lexeme was taken over early into the Hungarian language, in the form of haraszt, and was regularly recorded in charters until the end of the Middle Ages. At the same time, it is worth noting that haraszt in the sense of 'oak (tree)' was only used in the regions south of the Drava, while elsewhere in medieval Hungary it meant 'bushes, thicket; ground covered by low vegetation', in accordance with the meaning of the original word in most Slavic languages. The paper considers examples of the occurrence of the mentioned words in specific written sources. It also raises the question of whether the use of different words reflects the distinction between individual types of oak.

This article challenges the hypothesis, accepted by the overwhelming majority of historians and linguists, that the toponym Transylvania is the Latin translation of the original Hungarian term, Erdély. Although the terms are semantically equivalent, we will attempt to show that Erdély, an isolated example in Hungarian, was not the original, but rather a calque that appeared in specific historical circumstances. The consolidation of the toponyms took about four centuries. Both terms, Latin and Hungarian, are translations (calques) of a Slavic form Zagor(i)a, formed with the prefix za-'beyond, across' and gora 'mountain, hill, woods, forest'.

La domesticazione del cavallo (Equus caballus) è stata tradizionalmente interpretata attraverso il paradigma monocentrico: un singolo epicentro geografico — identificato ora nella cultura di Botai (Kazakhstan settentrionale, ~3500 a.C.), ora nella steppa pontico-caspica — dal quale la tecnologia equestre si sarebbe irradiata verso la periferia eurasiatica per lenta diffusione demografica. La presente monografia inficia sistematicamente questo paradigma attraverso quattro motori analitici indipendenti e convergenti.

Any reader of scholarship on the ancient and early medieval world will be familiar with the term 'Germanic', which is frequently used as a linguistic category, ethnonym, or descriptive identifier for a range of forms of cultural and literary material. But is the term meaningful, useful, or legitimate? The term, frequently applied to peoples, languages, and material culture found in non-Roman north-western and central Europe in classical antiquity, and to these phenomena in the western Roman Empire’s successor states, is often treated as a legitimate, all-encompassing name for the culture of these regions. Its usage is sometimes intended to suggest a shared social identity or ethnic affinity among those who produce these phenomena. Yet, despite decades of critical commentary that have highlighted substantial problems, its dominance of scholarship appears not to have been challenged. This edited volume, which offers contributions ranging from literary and linguistic studies to archaeology, and which span from the first to the sixteenth centuries AD, examines why the term remains so pervasive despite its problems, offering a range of alternative interpretative perspectives on the late and post-Roman worlds.

Il saggio evidenzia come nel campo dell’oreficeria la distinzione tra arte “bizantina” e “longobarda” sia spesso problematica, poiché artigiani, modelli artistici e oggetti circolavano tra i due mondi. Il nucleo di gioielli e manufatti liturgici di Senise (orecchini, fibule, anelli, croci e incensieri) testimonia questi intensi scambi culturali e religiosi.
Particolare attenzione è dedicata agli orecchini con impronta monetale dell’imperatore bizantino Costante II (641-668), interpretata come possibile richiamo simbolico alla vittoria di Grimoaldo (re dei longobardi dal 662 al 671) e del figlio Romualdo sui Bizantini nel 663. I manufatti di Senise potrebbero collegarsi alla rinascita del cristianesimo nel ducato di Benevento e alla presenza di maestranze orafe locali influenzate dalla tradizione bizantina.
Nel complesso, il contributo mostra come il Tesoro, o meglio i Tesori, di Senise rappresentino una preziosa testimonianza dell’incontro e della fusione tra cultura longobarda e cultura bizantina nell’Italia meridionale del VII secolo.

After Rome’s power faded in western Europe, gold still spoke. Small gold coins moved through the ports, markets, and royal courts of the early Middle Ages. They crossed the Channel from Francia. They passed through Kent, London, York, and other centers of power. Then, around 600 CE, Anglo-Saxon England began to make its own versions. Today, collectors call these coins thrymsas. Their users probably called them scillingas, or shillings. These tiny coins weigh about half as much as a modern U.S. dime. Yet they carry a huge story. They mark England’s return to coinage after the end of Roman Britain. They also reveal a world of trade, imitation, religion, and political ambition.

This article studies the social practices of the late antique Roman aristocracy based on the letters of Ennodius addressed to Maximus. The article discusses the tradition of exchanging gifts, as well as epistolary communication, determines the importance of rhetorical education, identifies other social norms characteristic of the Roman elite of the early 6th century. We also identify some innovations in the social practices of the elite associated with changes in socio-political conditions and spiritual quests.

For centuries, archaeologists have excavated the soils of Britain to uncover finds from the early medieval past. These finds have been used to reconstruct the alleged communities, migration patterns, and expressions of identity of coherent groups who can be regarded as ethnic 'Anglo-Saxons'. Even in the modern day, when social constructionism has been largely accepted by scholars, this paradigm still persists. This book challenges the ethnic paradigm. As the first historiographical study of approaches to ethnic identity in modern 'Anglo-Saxon' archaeology, it reveals these approaches to be incompatible with current scholarly understandings of ethnicity. Drawing upon post-structuralist approaches to self and community, it highlights the empirical difficulties the archaeology of ethnicity in early medieval Britain faces, and proposes steps toward an alternative understanding of the role played by the communities of lowland Britain, both migrants from across the North Sea and those already present, in transforming the Roman world.

This paper presents the genealogical evidence for Saint Patrick's family network, grounding it in two independent epigraphic sources that anchor his grandfather Potitus to a specific territory in the Bristol Channel region. The POTITII and OPTIMII stones on Lundy Island and the Pillar of Eliseg in northeast Wales provide physical, datable confirmation of the family connections that Patrick himself alludes to in the opening lines of the Confessio. Through the application of the Synonymous Name Method, Potitus is identified with a cluster of figures in the Welsh, Gaelic and Latin traditions-all encoding the same qualities of landownership, good kingship, and orthodox Christian alignment-and the genealogical line is traced through Vortigern and Severa to Magnus Maximus. The paper argues that Patrick's unusual practice of opening a formal document with his own genealogy is a deliberate juridical and political act, asserting his family's position on the right side of the defining conflict of the fifth century.

This paper presents a forensic reading of Saint Patrick's Confessio as a structured legal deposition rather than a conventional spiritual autobiography. By identifying Patrick with Mansuetus, the junior signatory at the First Council of Tours in 461 AD, and by anchoring his biography to specific Continental historical events, it demonstrates that the Confessio functions as a precise legal defence against a canonical indictment. The paper grounds the chronology of Patrick's life in the epigraphic and annalistic record, identifies his family estate in the Brecon region of south Wales, and reconstructs the political and theological conflict that surrounded his assumption of the Irish mission following the death of Palladius in 461 AD.
