Η εργασία μας εστιάζει στη μετάφραση και τον μεταφραστικό σχολιασμό του θεατρικού έργου Invitation à la valse του Γάλλου συγγραφέα Αλέξανδρου Δουμά (πατέρα), που παίχτηκε στο θέατρο για πρώτη φορά το 1857. Το συγκεκριμένο έργο παρουσιάζει μεγάλο μεταφραστικό ενδιαφέρον, καθώς δεν έχει μεταφραστεί στα ελληνικά μέχρι σήμερα. Το ερευνητικό μας ενδιαφέρον επικεντρώνεται γύρω από τη δημιουργία μίας μετάφρασης που θα είναι σε θέση να αναπαραστήσει το ύφος της εποχής και να γίνει κατανοητή από το σύγχρονο ελληνικό κοινό. Μέσω της διαδικασίας αυτής επιχειρούμε να αναδείξουμε τις προκλήσεις που προκύπτουν από τη μεταφορά πολιτισμικών και γλωσσικών ιδιαιτεροτήτων από μια χώρα σε μια άλλη και από μια εποχή σε μια άλλη. Το πρώτο κεφάλαιο παρουσιάζει τη βιογραφία και εργογραφία του συγγραφέα, το ιστορικό πλαίσιο της εποχής, την υποδοχή που του επιφύλαξε το ελληνικό κοινό, καθώς και τα χαρακτηριστικά του θεατρικού έργου και την περίληψη της πλοκής. Στο δεύτερο κεφάλαιο παρατίθενται τα αποσπάσματα προς μετάφραση, ενώ στο τρίτο παρουσιάζονται οι στρατηγικές και οι τεχνικές που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν για την μετάφραση τους, συνοδευόμενες από σχολιασμό των δυσκολιών και των ιδιαιτεροτήτων του κειμένου.

This article examines Mstislav Dobuzhinsky’s lecture “Clothing and
Attire (Costume in Life and on Stage). Costume and Fashion” (1922–1933),
preserved in the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania and until now
unpublished in academic circulation. The study aims to reveal the semiotic dimension
of the text, which allows it to be viewed as precursor of later theatre semiotics.
Through textual and contextual analysis, the article reconstructs Dobuzhinsky’s
artistic views, expressed in his understanding of costume as both a sign and an
expressive system of the stage. The paper systematizes the key principles formulated
by the artist: the expressiveness of costume, artistic economy, the principle of
the ensemble, and the understanding of costume as a threshold structure associated
with transformation. Dobuzhinsky’s ideas are further compared with the works of
R. Barthes and J. Lotman, demonstrating their continuing relevance and resonance
with later theoretical frameworks. In this light, Dobuzhinsky’s lecture emerges not
only as a document of theatrical and pedagogical practice of the 1920s–1930s, but
also as a valuable source for theatre and semiotic studies.
Статья посвящена анализу лекции Мстислава Добужинского
«Одежда и наряд (Костюм в жизни и на сцене). Костюм и мода» (1922–1933),
до настоящего времени не введенной в научный оборот и хранящейся в ар-
хиве Литовской национальной библиотеки им. М. Мажвидаса. Цель исследо-
вания — выявить семиотическое содержание текста и рассмотреть его как
предвосхищение будущей театральной семиотики. В статье реконструиру-
ются художественные взгляды Добужинского, проявившиеся в понимании
костюма как знака и выразительной системы сцены. Систематизированы
ключевые принципы, сформулированные художником: выразительность ко-
стюма, художественная экономия, принцип ансамбля, а также понимание ко-
стюма как пограничной структуры, связанной с актом перевоплощения. Про-
ведено сопоставление идей Добужинского с работами Р. Барта и Ю. Лотмана,
что позволяет показать их актуальность и созвучие более поздним концеп-
циям. Таким образом, лекция Добужинского предстает не только как доку-
мент театральной и педагогической практики 1920–1930-х гг., но и как цен-
ный источник для театроведческих и семиотических исследований.

This essay explores "social theater" —the inherent inauthenticity, hypocrisy, and role-playing of everyday life— through Molière’s "The Misanthrope". By drawing a tragic analogy between Alceste and Sophocles’s Oedipus, it examines how the pursuit of absolute purity within a corrupt social fabric leads to metaphorical blindness and scapegoating. Finally, utilizing Heideggerian ontology, the analysis demonstrates how Alceste’s rebellion against the anonymous dictatorship of "Das Man" culminates in an existential impasse: an inescapable exile from society itself.

Este ensaio apresenta um estudo do espetáculo Ça Ira (1) Fin de Louis, escrito e dirigido por Joël Pommerat. Inicialmente, busca-se estabelecer um diálogo entre Ça Ira e a histórica montagem de 1789, com direção de Ariane Mnouchkine. Em seguida, o espetáculo é examinado por meio de procedimentos recorrentes no trabalho de Pommerat, como, por exemplo, a neutralização do seu ponto de vista que expõe na peça situações, ideias e personagens sob diversas perspectivas. Por fim, este estudo baseia-se teoricamente no que Jean-Pierre Sarrazac chama de “teatros do íntimo” para observar a articulação entre o íntimo e o político em Ça Ira (1) Fin de Louis.

The Spanish Jesuit Adriano de las Cortes left in the Philippines in 1629 a lavishly
illustrated chronicle titled Journey to China. While the main body of the work records many natural
and humanistic landscapes of late Ming Dynasty Canton, it is the process of capture, interrogation
and escort in 1625-1626 that appears to be the primary purpose of the writing, and the reasons why
he travelled and quickly wrote the text seem to be more profound. Starting from three philological
details, i.e. the unusual season of departure, the unskilled references to Chinese officials, and apparent
hostility from the local people, this paper combines relevant historical facts and materials to reveal
that de las Cortes came well prepared for the trip instead of “common” shipwreck. This suggests his
journey was likely in response to the Dutch presence and competition in Canton and Hokkien region
during the first three decades of the 17th century.

L’Apothéose d’Arlequin. La Comédie-Italienne de Paris: un théâtre de l’expérimentation dramatique au xviiie siècle, dir. Emanuele De Luca et Andrea Fabiano, Paris, Sorbonne Université Presse, 2023, 525 pp.

This essay examines Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s "Letter to d’Alembert on Theatre" (1758), in which he critiques contemporary French theatre for promoting hypocrisy and moral superficiality. Focusing on Molière’s "The Misanthrope", Rousseau argues that even virtuous characters are rendered ridiculous, misleading audiences about true virtue. Theatre, he contends, shapes emotions without cultivating ethical judgment, potentially reinforcing social deceit, while highlighting the tension between authentic morality and the spectacle-driven values of society.

En mai 2025, le gouvernement français publie le rapport Frères musulmans et islamisme politique en France. Présenté comme une expertise neutre et objective, ce texte s’avère, à l’examen, un document profondément idéologique. Sous couvert d’analyse, il érige l’Islam en menace diffuse, amalgame des réalités hétérogènes et alimente une vision anxiogène de la population musulmane.

Ce livre propose une lecture critique systématique de ce rapport. Il met en lumière ses biais méthodologiques, ses présupposés politiques et son inscription dans une tradition longue de stigmatisation des minorités religieuses et culturelles. À travers l’étude des procédés rhétoriques, mais aussi des dispositifs juridiques et médiatiques qui en découlent, il montre comment s’élabore un complotisme islamophobe institutionnel, nourri d’amalgames et de simplifications.

En replaçant cette production étatique dans une perspective historique, l’ouvrage révèle la continuité d’une gestion coloniale de l’Islam qui ne cesse de s’en prendre aux libertés publiques.

Clair et documenté, ce travail entend démonter les mécanismes d’un récit d’État, dont les effets dépassent la seule question musulmane pour interroger l’avenir même de la démocratie française.

Arthur Murphy’s 1759 tragedy, The Orphan of China, serves as a crucial case study for the (inter)cultural politics of eighteenth-century British theatre. This essay examines the play’s production and reception to understand how it navigated the commercial landscape of British theatre during the Seven Years’ War. The analysis shows that the play constructed a distinct form of “British Chinoiserie” as a direct challenge to French cultural dominance. Through its textual adaptation, staging, performances, and audience engagement, the play masterfully blended Shakespearean melodrama with the visual spectacle of Chinoiserie. This approach transformed “China” into a complex cultural symbol. It simultaneously catered to the consumer tastes of the middle class and provided a stage for moral and political discourse. The play’s success demonstrates that eighteenth-century British theatre was a dynamic arena where commerce, politics, and aesthetics converged. By theatrically reimagining a foreign narrative, it mirrored the cultural anxieties and processes of identity formation that characterized the rise of the British Empire.

This paper is an exploration of what seems to affirm itself as a new form of political theatre in William Kentridge's work at the Handspring Puppet Company, based in Cape Town (South Africa). Within this framework, I will focus on those aspects of production through which theatricality finds a more silent, yet more effective way to expose the social, cultural and political landscapes of South Africa. There seems to be a link between Kentridge's multiand even transdisciplinary artistic approach and the south-african transculturality, which may explain some of the aesthetical, as well as the political sides of theatrical performances, such as Woyzeck on the Highveld (1992), Faustus in Africa (1994), and Ubu and the Truth Commission. These pieces will be analyzed here in order to better understand the moods, as well as the dynamics of the south-african shifting identities and their implications as a dramatic theme on the audience's reception of what I call a silent politics. In these productions, the political discourse emerges out of the self-referential theme of identity and of its alter-ations, both at the formal and symbolical levels, as a subtle and effective performative act.

Louis XIII et Richelieu au théâtre sous Napoléon ou Napoléon au théâtre sous Louis XIII et Richelieu « C'est une pensée bien ridicule d'aller au théâtre apprendre l'histoire », écrit en 1657 l'abbé d'Aubignac 1 . À une époque où la tragédie réserve -sauf exception à la ville et dans le théâtre de collège 2 -ses sujets à la mythologie et aux temps éloignés 3 , ce jugement perpétue la frontière modale tracée par Aristote au chapitre 9 de la Poétique entre l'histoire ayant pour fin la vérité et « le rôle du poète [qui] ne consiste pas à dire ce qui s'est passé mais ce qui pourrait arriver, ce qui est possible selon le vraisemblable ou le nécessaire 4 . » Or tout au long du siècle des Lumières, une recherche accrue de vérité transforme à la fois l'écriture de l'histoire et la littérature qui s'en inspire, notamment la tragédie, puis le drame, la comédie et d'autres genres qui s'en emparent à des fins civiques et patriotiques : les figures historiques modernes et nationales obtiennent ainsi droit de cité sur scène, malgré la surveillance de la censure 5 . Pas toutes, cependant. Le couple Louis XIII-Richelieu ne profite pas d'abord de cette ouverture : après La Rochelaise (1629), tragédie d'actualité de Pierre Mathieu 6 , il faut attendre 1800 pour le voir reparaître au théâtre, où il connaît une première floraison contrariée en amont du cycle romanesque et dramatique que lui réservera la génération romantique. Ce retour du roi et de son ministre sous les régimes césaristes de Napoléon, qui a peu été remarqué, mérite qu'on s'y intéresse.

Cet article propose une réflexion à partir de deux captations conservées dans le fonds audiovisuel de la Théâtrothèque Gaston Baty de l'Institut d'études théâtrales de la Sorbonne Nouvelle, à savoir les enregistrements du Re Lear mis en scène par Giorgio Strehler en 1972 et du Peer Gynt mis en scène par Patrice Chéreau en 1981. Les historiens du théâtre s'intéressent généralement à ces documents afin d'étudier, et parfois croiser, les parcours de ces deux metteurs en scène qui ont profondément marqué le théâtre européen entre les années 1960 et les années 1980, et de comparer leurs pratiques artistiques. Il convient pourtant de s'attarder sur le statut documentaire de ces sources, de développer une réflexion d'ordre épistémologique et de mesurer en quoi leurs contextes de production respectifs pourraient, ou devraient, modifier leur usage, en particulier dans un cadre pédagogique.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Julie or the New Heloise extends far beyond picturesque scenery. It anticipates central questions of contemporary ecocriticism. Through a close reading of gardens, mountain landscapes, and lake shores, this study shows that Rousseau treats nature as an active agent that shapes human identity and moral development. The novel's first half features scenes of intimate reverie that demonstrate what Zev Trachtenberg calls the "environmentalism of the man," as nature elicits affect, stimulates self-understanding, and contributes to lovers' psychological development through influence. The second half, focusing on the Clarens estate and the Elysium Garden, illustrates the "environmentalism of the citizen" (Trachtenberg "Rousseau and Environmentalism"). Rousseau presents an ecological microrepublic where sustainable agriculture, closed-loop exchanges, vegetarian consumption, and cooperative labor cultivate civic virtue and social justice. Rousseau dramatizes a reciprocally beneficial human-nature relationship that echoes debates about environmental justice in the Anthropocene. By situating Julie in early modern ecological thought, the study positions Rousseau as a pioneering voice in the environmental humanities and a precursor to ecocriticism's emphasis on non-human agency.

Cet article analyse les réponses littéraires apportées par Henry Bauchau et Michel Vinaver aux attentats du 11 septembre 2001, envisagés comme événement fondateur d’une « communauté événementielle » mondiale. En s’appuyant sur les notions d’événement, de crise et de temporalité, l’étude montre que les deux écrivains refusent le ressassement empathique et l’enrayement temporel caractéristiques de nombreuses représentations post-traumatiques. À travers une comparaison différentielle de Petite suite au 11 septembre et de 11 septembre 2001, l’article met en évidence deux stratégies poétiques distinctes mais convergentes: la mise en résonance mythique et culturelle chez Bauchau, et la polyphonie critique des discours chez Vinaver. Dans les deux cas, l’écriture opère une mise à distance réfléchissante de l’événement, visant à réinscrire celui-ci dans le continuum historique et symbolique. L’écrivain apparaît ainsi comme une voix médiatrice, capable de transformer la violence de l’événement en objet de pensée et de contribuer à l’élaboration d’une « juste mémoire », non obsessionnelle. La littérature est envisagée comme un lieu d’objection éthique et de responsabilité, offrant à la communauté brisée la possibilité d’un travail de deuil et d’une reconstruction du sens.

Аннотация: В предлагаемой работе рассматриваются семиотические особенности пространственно-временной структуры процесса театрального коммуникативного акта -превращения текста пьесы в действо на сцене -и соответствующая специфика семиотической организации архитектурного знака здания театра. Исследуются этапы и структура театрального акта коммуникации как последовательность процессов семиотического переводасинтетической знаковой трансмутации в пространственно-временном континууме культуры и их проекция на язык архитектуры. Ключевые слова: театральная коммуникация, архитектура театра, семиотика, межсемиотический перевод, знаковая трансмутация, постановка пьесы, знаковость сцены, хронотоп.

This text presents initial data on the theater of French Guiana. Here I outline cultural, political-social, and identity issues of Franco-Amazonian theater in Latin America, with a greater focus on Franco-Guyanese theater. To that end, I present a brief historical trajectory of this theater, and I also propose terminologies for the study of Franco-Guyanese theatrical production, namely: Black theater, Franco-Amazonian theater, and Black-Amazonian dramaturgies. Thus, this summary gathers some characteristics, practices, names of theatrical agents, and representative dramatic texts in French from this Amazonian region, as will be possible to see throughout the text and in its appendix. It is intended that this study be a brief introduction to the topic, and that it may motivate further studies on Franco-Amazonian theater.

Elle constitue pourtant la plus ancienne pièce théâtrale européenne connue à ce jour portant sur la chute de la dynastie Ming, antérieure même de huit ans au Zungchin du dramaturge néerlandais Joost van den Vondel. Conservée sous la forme de livret de théâtre, dont trois impressions distinctes subsistent, cette œuvre fut éditée, reliée, interprétée et collectionnée dans un cercle étroitement lié à la royauté et à l’aristocratie française du Grand Siècle. Le livret emprunte certains noms de personnages et éléments narratifs à l’Histoire de la Guerre des Tartares contre la Chine (De Bello Tartarica Historia) de Martino Martini, mais en subvertit profondément la trame: la déchéance tragique de la maison Ming y devient une tragédie de vengeance courtoise, dans laquelle une noblesse vertueuse rétablit l’ordre et la justice. Cette transposition dramatique résonne avec les troubles politiques et la crise monarchique que la France connut durant la Guerre de Trente Ans et la Fronde, tout en exprimant l’esprit humaniste de l’éducation dispensée au sein de l’Académie Royale de Paris au XVIIe siècle. La prédilection manifestée par la France et d’autres nations européennes pour la tragédie de la chute des Ming témoigne de la manière dont l’Europe a su intérioriser l’événement de la transition dynastique Ming-Qing en tant que ressource historique propre. Ce processus d’appropriation a permis à l’expérience historique chinoise de jouer un rôle significatif dans ce que Peter Burke a désigné comme la «crise des arts du XVIIe siècle», ainsi que dans les crises politiques ultérieures survenues en France.

Перечисляются и анализируются постановки, частично или полностью опирающиеся на текст повести, и делается вывод о резком росте популярности «Записок» в последние годы. Однако с увеличением популярности происходит одновременное упрощение интерпретации текста, на первый план выходит «психоаналитический» подход, который существенно искажает авторский замысел, сводя смысл повести к анализу индивидуального невроза и лишая текст «Записок» универсального смысла. The article studies theatrical interpretations of Notes from Underground in
Italy. It analyzes performances inspired by Dostoevsky’s novel and draws a conclusion that the popularity of the novel has been constantly rising in the last decades. However, as the novel becomes more popular, its interpretations get simpler and narrower: the prevailing “psychoanalytical” approach significantly distorts the original text, limiting it to an analysis
of an individual neurosis and thus causing it to lose its universal meaning

The years 1659 to 1689 were important in the history and development of tragedy. 1 Pierre Corneille returned to writing for the stage as they were beginning, 2 and Racine's illustrious career began in 1664. They have, however, been much studied, and my objective here is to throw new light on the performance and reception of tragedy by examining the part it played in the programming of three companies that succeeded one another: Molière's troupe, the Hôtel Guénégaud company and the Comédie-Française. In 1659, the actor La Grange joined Molière's troupe, which had returned to Paris from the provinces the year before, and began to keep his celebrated Registre. 3 Molière had begun his career in Paris in the 1640s as a member of the Illustre Théâtre, which he founded with members of the Béjart family. When it failed, he left the capital and spent over a decade touring the provinces. Upon his return, he found three troupes operating in Paris: the Hôtel de Bourgogne and Marais companies and an Italian commedia dell'arte troupe performing in a theatre in the Petit-Bourbon palace. The King, Louis XIV, first ordered Molière to share the Petit-Bourbon with the Italians. Then, when that was demolished, 4 both troupes moved to a theatre in the Palais-Royal. When Molière died in February 1673, his troupe lost its leader, chief playwright and pricipal actor. Moreover, its theatre in the Palais-Royal was immediately allocated to the composer Jean-Baptiste Lully for his operas. It must have appeared that the company would not recover, and four actors left for the relative security of the Hôtel de Bourgogne. The remaining members of Molière's troupe succeeded, however, in taking over the Hôtel Guénégaud, where they were joined by actors from the Marais Theatre, whose own company was dissolved. 5 This new troupe performed at the Guénégaud until 1680, when the Hôtel de 1 A fuller version of this article will appear in The Seventeenth Century.
