Greek Comedy

Ancient Greek comedy survives largely in fragmentary form, a condition traditionally regarded as a major obstacle to both philological interpretation and theatrical practice. While fragmentary tragedy has increasingly attracted the interest of theatre practitioners, comic fragments remain strikingly underrepresented on the contemporary stage. This article argues that this imbalance stems not from the dramaturgical limitations of comic fragments, but primarily from the absence of accessible and systematically organised research infrastructures capable of mediating between philological material and theatrical practice. Institutional and practical factors within theatre culture may also contribute to their marginal position on the modern stage. Drawing on cognitive approaches to perception and spectatorship, the article reconceives fragmentation as structurally compatible with contemporary theatre. Meaning in performance emerges through the integration of partial stimuli; fragmentary comedy therefore need not be reconstructed to function theatrically. What it requires is visibility, accessibility, and contextualisation. The article proposes that digital research infrastructures can function not merely as repositories of information, but as epistemological tools that render dispersed evidence visible, navigable, and theatrically usable. Using the Menander Redivivus project as a developing model and presenting, as a case study, a performance proposal for the fragments of Menander's Hēros, the article explores how digital mediation can reposition fragmentary comedy within contemporary theatre culture.

Cleise Furtado Mendes A cena ou situação que constitui o Tribunal do Júri-com sua atribuição básica de papéis e espaços de atuação-tem sido há muito tempo alvo de renovado interesse por parte de dramaturgos, roteiristas e ficcionistas em geral. Todos nós conhecemos bem a ampla oferta de peças, filmes e séries que exploram essa configuração cênica para contar suas histórias, a ponto de já se ter criado o rótulo popular de "drama de tribunal". Assim, dentre numerosos exemplos, gostaria de citar apenas dois clássicos, que podem servir de referência para a caracterização, que busco sugerir aqui, dessa forma dramatúrgica. O primeiro deles é um filme de 1957, com direção de Billy Wilder, que em português recebeu o nome Testemunha de Acusação (Witness for the prosecution). A ação se passa quase totalmente no recinto do tribunal, em Londres, 1954. O argumento envolve um assassinato e um triângulo amoroso. Um homem, Leonard Vole (interpretado por Tyrone Power), é acusado do assassinato de uma viúva rica e conta com a defesa de um renomado e experiente advogado, Sir Wilfrid Robarts (vivido por Charles Laughton). O álibi que pode inocentar Leonard depende do testemunho de sua esposa, Christine Vole (Marlene Dietrich), mas para espanto de todos ela se apresenta como testemunha da acusação, não da defesa. Esse é o ponto de inflexão na trama que vai permitir uma estratégia de grande astúcia e um final surpreendente. O roteiro, magistral, é adaptação de peça teatral homônima de Agatha Christie, que tinha estreado em 1953, em Londres. 1 O segundo exemplo é um filme de 1960, com título em português O Vento Será Tua Herança (Inherit the wind) e direção de Stanley Kramer. O roteiro, também baseado em uma peça teatral, fala de um caso real, ocorrido em 1925, no estado de Tennessee, EUA. 1 1 Existe também uma versão para TV, de 1982, com direção de Alan Gibson e roteiro de John Gay. O professor John Thomas Scopes é julgado por ensinar a Teoria da Evolução, de Charles Darwin, em uma escola pública. O julgamento, que foi o primeiro a ser transmitido pelo rádio, durou 11 dias, e teve repercussão mundial, exibindo um verdadeiro espetáculo de argumentação entre acusação e defesa, papéis protagonizados por um brilhante advogado (Spencer Tracy) e um promotor fundamentalista (Fredrich March). Um detalhe merece ser lembrado: o juiz impediu que a defesa apresentasse cientistas como testemunhas em favor da Teoria da Evolução! 2 Embora nesse tipo de obras o principal efeito seja produzido pela concentração na cenologia do tribunal 3, nos limites físicos dessa arena oficial, é comum a alternância com cenas externas que servem para informar, enfatizar ou mesmo pôr em dúvida os dados narrativos que são lançados no palco jurídico. No cinema brasileiro, há o exemplo curioso de um filme de 1967, intitulado O Caso dos Irmãos Naves, com direção de Luís Sérgio Person, que trata de um caso verídico de erro judicial, ocorrido trinta anos antes, em pleno Estado Novo, na cidade de Araguari, Minas Gerais. Os irmãos Joaquim (Raul Cortez) e Sebastião Naves (Juca de Oliveira) apresentam à polícia uma queixa de que seu primo e sócio Benedito Caetano teria fugido com o dinheiro resultante da venda de uma safra de arroz, cerca de 90 contos de réis. Mas o tenente de polícia e então delegado interino Chico Vieira (Anselmo Duarte), que comanda as investigações, passa a tratar os dois irmãos como culpados pela suposta morte de Benedito: acusa-os de latrocínio e recorre à tortura para finalmente extrair uma confissão. A truculência do delegado estende-se à família dos réus: a mãe e as esposas são presas e severamente intimidadas.4 O filme, realizado durante o primeiro período da ditadura militar no Brasil, está claramente direcionado à discussão da tortura e do abuso de poder por parte de policiais. 2 2 Há uma versão de 1999, com direção de Daniel Petrie, em que os papéis do advogado de defesa e do rígido promotor são vividos, respectivamente, por Jack Lemon e George C. Scott. 3 O fato de muitos roteiros cinematográficos partirem de textos escritos para o palco tem uma associação direta com a delimitação espacial que é constitutiva desse tipo de drama. 4 O caso passa por três julgamentos, e os irmãos chegam a ficar injustamente presos por oito anos. Em 1946, os irmãos saem em liberdade condicional; em 1952, Sebastião Naves descobre que Benedito, o primo foragido, está bem vivo, morando na fazenda dos pais, em Nova Ponte, MG; Sebastião o conduz, sob escolta policial, para Araguari, feliz por enfim provar que os Naves tinham sido condenados por um crime inexistente. Mas já era um pouco tarde para o irmão, Joaquim, que falecera em 1948, em um asilo, com a saúde debilitada pelas torturas sofridas. O roteiro do filme é de autoria do diretor Luís Sérgio Person em parceria com Jean-Claude Bernadet, desenvolvido a partir do livro publicado em 1960 por João Alamy Filho, que atuou como advogado de defesa da família ao longo de todo o processo. Human beings' engagement with the world forms the basis to their understanding of it, and the elements of their daily life influence their sense of place. There is a complex dimension to the notion of environment that involves experiencing and understanding oneself in the world. The first part of this article is concerned with current concepts of cognitive geography and the second part considers some comic fragments from the perspective of these concepts. This article proposes that the enactivist study of the representation of geographical space, landscape, and place in Greek comic fragments is key to the interpretation of fragmentary texts that contain geographical data but lack context and additional information.

El presente trabajo La mujer en Atenas en los siglos V-IV a.C., se encuadra dentro del proceso formativo de la asignatura Cultura y sociedad en la Grecia Antigua, del cuarto curso del grado de Historia, impartida por la profesora Miriam Valdés Guía en la parte teórica y por Lucía DDomínguez como guía en la práctica de la asignatura. Este período nos pareció interesante por los cambios que se producen en él, tanto a nivel político, como económico y social, y por ende cultural, que, en lo que respecta a la situación femenina, como en muchos otros aspectos de la Grecia Antigua en general, la información de que disponemos, además de escasa, es sesgada, pues las fuentes clásicas de que disponemos son masculinas y contienen un claro discurso patriarcal. Nuestro primer planteamiento al abordarlo fue estructurarlo de manera que pudiéramos mostrar a la mujer ateniense y la no ateniense, como manera de poder emplear o no el concepto de "ciudadanía", y poder mostrar el debate o consideración actual al respecto. Para ello mostraríamos el heterogéneo corpus femenino presente en la Atenas clásica, finalizando con las situaciones de marginalidad y pobreza y con el aspecto religioso, pero a medida que íbamos consultando bibliografía nos fuimos interesando por otros aspectos de la vida cotidiana que eran comunes a todas estas mujeres. Lo cierto es que, si la "ciudadanía" asociada a la mujer estaba ligada a ser hija y esposa de ciudadanos, 1 y nos permitía hacer esta distinción entre ellas, también su estatus social determinó que la gran mayoría de ellas, independientemente de esta condición, ante la necesidad económica se vieran obligadas a desarrollar "trabajos" que las hizo confluir en espacios, lo que hizo que nos interesara mostrar también este aspecto más allá de su diferenciación en base a su lugar de procedencia y/o condición jurídica y social. Si desde el punto de vista de la historia de género, los estudios sobre la mujer en la antigüedad la presentan de acuerdo al lugar ocupado con respecto al hombre, hemos intentado también mostrar a la mujer en la Atenas clásica incluyendo espacios que todas pudieron compartir, y en la actividad que desarrollaron desde el punto de vista de la economía familiar, en espacios considerados masculinos, e incluso realizando trabajos que habían sido tradicionalmente realizados por hombres. Así hacemos una distinción entre mujer ateniense y no ateniense, y los espacios que tradicionalmente les ha asignado la historiografía, para después abordar su (in)visibilidad y los espacios públicos reconocidos como femeninos en que coincidieron, y los masculinos que, aunque de un modo distinto también ocuparon, para finalizar con su importancia en el espacio religioso. En cuanto a las fuentes, hemos seleccionado los autores que nos parecen más representativos con respecto a los aspectos que queremos tratar y que hemos consultado. Demóstenes en sus Discursos privados nos permite acercarnos a la situación que atraviesan diferentes mujeres, y nos permite indagar sobre la capacidad de maniobra que pueden tener en situaciones adversas que no contemplan otros autores; Jenofonte nos muestra el concepto de la función y papel de la mujer en el oikos, así como su relación con todos los que entran en él; Plutarco en sus Vidas Paralelas nos muestra la sociedad de Pericles y los cambios que se producen en las capas sociales. The dissertation offers a modern commentary on Plautus’ Captivi. It is divided in four parts: the Introduction, the Latin text, the Translation of the text in Modern Greek, and the Commentary. It is completed with the Conclusions, the Cospectus metrorum, four Appendices (1. Textual criticism, 2. Colometry, 3. Prosody. Metrical phenomena. Laws of Plautine meter. The meters of the Captivi, 4. Language), the English summary, Bibliography, and the Index locorum. The structure of the commentary follows the conventional five–act division of the play, and the arrangement in the respective scenes. The notation of the acts and scenes is used only for the reader’s convenience, and for the purpose of the better arrangement of the dissertation into chapters. The annotation of every scene is preceded by an introductory note that falls into separate sections. First is presented the content of each scene, then the delineation of its characters, then their linguistic and stylistic characterization, and the function of the scene (whether it promotes the plot, or it serves other dramatic purposes). Other topics under discussion are the standard comic motifs and possible Plautine extension and original treatment of the Greek model; general remarks on meter and music, and discussion of questions of scenic presentation are also included. The commentary is oriented towards the examination of the language of Plautus’ text (morphology, grammar, lexicon and syntax), meter, prosody, and textual criticism. The majority of the textual problems are discussed, together with the respective conjectures and emendations, and the arguments for the options adopted in each case in the text of the dissertation. Observations on grammar, lexicon, syntax, and style are followed by examples from Plautus and other writers, and special emphasis is given on Plautus’ style, as well as the linguistic and stylistic characterization of the play’s characters; the features of their speech are summarized in the dissertation’s Conclusions. Many references are made to meter either with reference to the textual emendation or for its stylistic effect, or also for the dramatic effect achieved by the changes of meter and music in the cantica and across the different stages of the action. Moreover, Plautus’ dramaturgy, the character portrayal, the essence and the forms of humor and the overall tone of the play, the theatrical practices as seen in it, and its social contextualization through discussion of the versions and views of slavery each of the character represents in the play, in light of the ideology of the Roman slave owner society, are all questions thoroughly addressed anew in this dissertation. This gives a fresh understanding and interpretation of Plautine dramatic aesthetics and originality in the Captivi, and of the special place of the play in the Plautine corpus and in Roman Republican comedy in general.

In this paper, the author analyzes Descartes' treatment of indignation in Les passions de l'âme. He puts forth his analysis in light of the diachronic history of the notion of indignation, and in particular of the coexistence of two notions related to this feeling: Aristotle's nemesis and the Latin indignatio. While Descartes subscribes to a view of indignation that is in continuity with indignatio, thus associating this passion to hatred and anger, he also retains some elements from nemesis, namely its proximity with pity and envy. Furthermore, he redefines envy-one of the passions which indignation is historically related to-based on the definition of nemesis. This article explores this tangled reconfiguration, seeking the gist of Descartes' position on indignation. Section one provides some general introductory elements on the history of this passion before Descartes, particularly in the sixteenth century. Section two provides a few fundamental remarks about what the author calls "judgemental passions", a category that includes indignation along with pity, envy, and other similar passions connected to it. In section three, the author analyzes Descartes' twofold definition of indignation in art. 65 and 195 of Les passions de l'âme. Due to the structural kinship between indignation, anger, and envy, in sections four and five, he engages respectively with Descartes' treatment of anger and envy. He focuses specifically on the aspects of these passions that help define Cartesian indignation, as well as on the emerging relationship between indignation and generosity. The sixth and final section proffers some conclusions and remarks about indignation in Descartes' Passions.

This article aims to illustrate some intersections between Greek philosophical satire and ancient Greek philosophy by discussing the Pyrrhonian satire of Timon of Phlius against the philosophy of Socrates and his followers. Timonian mockery operates not only through literary strategies such as ὀνομαστὶ κομῳδεῖν, a hallmark of Aristophanic Old Comedy, but also through caricatures of Socrates' ideas and their reception, captured by the term "Philosophenspott". Analysing this philosophical mockery opens new avenues for studying how ancient authors, including Timon, used satire both to undermine rival doctrines and also to articulate their own doctrines.

تهدف هذه الدراسة الاستكشافية إلى استعراض واقع الأدبيات المنشورة حول دمج الذكاء الاصطناعي في برامج تعليم علوم المكتبات والمعلومات، وذلك من خلال مقارنة الأدبيات العربية والإنجليزية خلال الفترة من 2019 إلى 2024. وقد تبين من خلال هذه الدراسة وجود فجوة كبيرة بين الأدبيات العربية والإنجليزية في هذا المجال، حيث تفوقت الأدبيات الإنجليزية من حيث الكم والتنوع. كما أظهرت الدراسة تركيز الأدبيات العربية بشكل أكبر على الجوانب التقنية للذكاء الاصطناعي، بينما تناولت الأدبيات الإنجليزية جوانب أكثر شمولية مثل المناهج التدريسية والبرامج الأكاديمية. وتوصي الدراسة بزيادة الاهتمام بالأبحاث العربية في هذا المجال، وتطوير مناهج تعليمية متكاملة تعتمد على الذكاء الاصطناعي، وتقييم تأثير دمج الذكاء الاصطناعي على جودة التعليم ومخرجاته.

The historical plausibility of the fable IV 2 of Phaedrus, based on the first encounter between Demetrius of Phaleron and Menander, is reexamined considering the ancient testimonia on the image of the comic poet, the chronological problems, and the tradition hostile to the Phalerean. It does not seem necessary to assume some confusion with Demetrius Poliorcetes and it is conceivable that the source of the anecdote is Lynceus of Samos, who wrote a treatise on Menander.

Difilo di Sinope (IV/III sec. a.C.) è considerato, perlomeno a partire dal I sec. d.C., uno dei tre maggiori rappresentanti della commedia nuova, accanto a Menandro e Filemone. Il presente studio è articolato in due sezioni. La prima parte è dedicata a inquadrare Difilo nello spazio e nel tempo in cui operò sulla base di elementi sia esterni, forniti dalle testimonianze biografiche e aneddotiche, che interni, tramite l’analisi di alcuni frammenti delle sue commedie, con l’obiettivo di mostrare che esse non sono da considerare avulse dal contesto storico in cui furono prodotte. La seconda parte, invece, indaga le modalità della trasmissione e della ricezione dei suoi testi, tanto in Grecia, dalle revisioni d’autore alla fine della circolazione delle copie, anche attraverso l’esame delle scarne citazioni papiracee, quanto a Roma, con lo studio delle riprese da parte dei commediografi latini e delle testimonianze che collocano il poeta nel canone della commedia nuova.

The paper proposes a new interpretation of the parodic reference to Euripides’ Hippolytus 345 present in the opening lines of Aristophanes’ Knights. It argues that the comic poet singles out exactly that line with the purpose of reminding the ‘correction’ which Euripides was compelled to make as the first version of his tragedy had ‘scandalized’ the audience, that same audience which then applauded the new version without realizing – to Aristophanes’ eyes – the ‘trick’ of Euripides’ subtle change.

is a short version of a longer discussion which reviews in an extensive way the literature on utopias and utopian thought in Ancient Greek Literature from Homer to Plato with a focus on Aristophanes' comedy. ** Rosanna Lauriola has a Ph.D. in Greek and Latin Philology and Literature. She is currently Assistant Professor of Classics at the University of Idaho. R. Lauriola is the author of two books on Greek dramatic poetry (Sophocles' Oedipus Rex; Aristophanes' The Acharnians) and a third one is forthcoming. She is also the author of several scholarly papers related to ancient Greek authors, from Homer and Hesiod to Sophocles and Aristophanes.

This paper presents as a case study a discussion pertaining to a peculiar approach that some US scholars have applied to texts of ancient Greek literature, as a response to a specific reality that for decades has been afflicting American society: the timeless experience of war and its aftermath. It is a type of reading and re-usage of some ancient texts that can be regarded as a case of Classical Reception, which also, and almost inevitably, involves Outreach: it in fact provides a service beyond conventional limits to reach out to particular segments of the community. The analysis will be articulated into two parts: the first one will consist of (i) a theoretical overview of the status of Classical Reception Studies with a survey of a few cases as a sample of 'how it works', and (ii) an introduction to the above mentioned approach to classical texts to respond to the reality of modern war, such an approach that turns Classics into an important tool of outreach and therapy. The second part (forthcoming in Acta Scientiarum v.36, n.3) will consist of a detailed discussion of the 'case study' in terms of reception, outreach, and therapy, with an attention to the pedagogical discourse, and with a conclusion on a personal note of the author of this paper, based on a related personal experience.

Na primeira parte, marcam presença os mitos de Antígona, Medeia e Héracles, além dos que poderíamos englobar sob as legendas "mito troiano" e "mito tebano". Pontualmente, a consideração das peças fragmentárias amplia o horizonte. A comédia grega e latina é também merecedora de diversos estudos, em que o teatro de Aristófanes e de Plauto têm destaque. Platão, um notável espectador e testemunho de uma leitura 'a quente' da produção dramática sua contemporânea, tem lugar numa reflexão em que o público é um pressuposto incontornável. A segunda parte do volume constitui-se de um conjunto expressivo de estudos de receção, abarcando um lapso de séculos, que vai do XVI à contemporaneidade. De acordo com a origem diversificada dos autores, esses estudos dizem sobretudo respeito à Europa e América Latina. A proximidade dos diversos estudiosos que participam neste volume com a realidade geográfica e cultural em que as reescritas em análise foram produzidas é uma garantia da capacidade de produzir um enquadramento essencial à compreensão das variantes nelas envolvidas. Por outro lado, a sua identidade académica justifica que a abordagem, além de literária, seja também dramática e cénica. Por fim, dois capítulos são dedicados ao modo como o nosso mundo, totalmente rendido aos meios informáticos, tem aberto os novos canais de inventariação, registo, confronto e análise, ao estudo dos Clássicos. E uma vez mais, como sempre, os 'velhos' textos têm sido capazes de afirmar a sua incrível versatilidade. Dentro do que se foi tornando já uma rotina, o projeto CLASTEA (Teatro Clássico) teve a sua sétima edição no Rio de Janeiro, em finais de 2024. Seguindo o programa estipulado por esta iniciativa, o último encontro reuniu especialistas focados no Teatro Greco-Latino e sua Receção, sendo a interdisciplinaridade, como sempre, uma regra. Estudiosos das áreas dos Estudos Clássicos, dos Estudos Literários, dos Estudos e da Pragmática Teatral, da Filosofia, da História, cobrindo uma vasta área geográfica, cooperaram numa leitura a que o próprio potencial dos antigos textos dramáticos e sua reescrita convidam. Voltar à análise dos Clássicos Greco-Latinos será sempre ir em busca de novidade na tradição. Porque, se o corpus disponível é, em boa parte, constante, a leitura que em cada novo momento histórico se faz dele será sempre inédita e atualizada. A época em que vivemos não nos tem poupado a crises e imprevistos. Guerras, instabilidade política, degradação da natureza, decadência social e económica, são marcas que identificam estas três décadas do séc. XXI. Em todas estas experiências há uma mescla de novidade -os contextos mudam, os agentes dos acontecimentos tambéme repetição, na medida em que lhes subjaz a perenidade de certas tendências humanas. O bordão dos clássicos continua a render-nos: quid humanum nunquam alienum. A partir dos textos antigos, muitos outros, ao longo de milénios, reinterpretaram, reescreveram, reformularam o repertório teatral legado pela Antiguidade, em uma dinâmica de absorção e revisão, por vezes de crítica e subversão. Também eles nos merecem uma atenção permanente. Sobretudo temos a consciência de que não se esgotam, estão em permanente processo de renovação, exigem a nossa atenção e empenho hermenêutico. No preciso momento em que lemos estas linhas, que contêm um desafio a interesses comuns, alguém estará a pôr um ponto final em mais alguma Antígona, Medeia, Penélope, Clitemnestra ... O livro que agora apresentamos contém os resultados desse VII CLAS-TEA. De modo coerente com os propósitos do projeto, está dividido em duas partes, a primeira dedicada à Antiguidade e a segunda à Receção. Na primeira parte, marcam presença aqueles que são os mitos de referência na tragédia, detentores de uma visibilidade particular pela insistência com que foram retomados, os de Antígona, Medeia e Héracles, além dos que poderíamos englobar sob as legendas "mito troiano" e "mito tebano".

This paper examines the relationship between Plato’s philosophy and Greek tragedy through a comparison between Plato’s Gorgias and Euripides’ lost tragedy Antiope. It argues that Plato constructs philosophy as a new and distinct form of knowledge partly by engaging with and transforming themes from tragic drama. The debate between the brothers Zethus and Amphion in Antiope, which contrasts practical action with intellectual and artistic life, provides an important background for understanding the confrontation between Callicles and Socrates in the Gorgias. Callicles adopts arguments similar to those of Zethus, criticizing philosophy as socially useless and politically ineffective. Socrates responds by redefining philosophical activity as the only true form of political expertise, capable of benefiting the city. Through this reinterpretation, Plato appropriates the tragic debate in order to defend the political value and superiority of philosophy.

Satyr play makes abundant use of themes and motifs from the repertoire of fairy tale, magical Märchen, the stuff of fantasy that nurtures the tradition of popular imaginary storytelling. Characteristic motifs of supernatural experience, wonder, and magical order of things are either placed at the centre of the plot and determine key events of the storyline, or are used as graphic peripheral/circumstantial details, by means of which the atmosphere and setting are rendered marvellous. The typical repertoire includes objects with magical qualities, which confer invisibility, immense power, rejuvenation, madness; herbs with marvellous capacities (granting rejuvenation, cure, immortality); miraculous supernatural cures; wizards and witches; ogres with superhuman powers, monsters of mixed nature and unnatural appearance, and the hero’s combat against them (dragon-slayer motif); hybrid creatures and speaking animals; extraordinary travels to marvellous places and travel wonders; metamorphosis, either singular or many changes of form in succession (shape-shifting); supernatural plenty and abundance (Cockaigne); automation and enlivenment of inanimate objects or effigies; and miraculously rapid growth.

Other themes and motifs of satyr play also pertain to recognisable categories of folktale and popular imagination, even though they are not of magical essence: tales of wisdom and adventurous romance. For example: posing and solution of riddles, as part of intellectual contest; the damsel in distress and her salvation by the hero; the hero legend (the infant with great destiny, which is exposed but saved, grows up, and becomes a powerful hero or leader). Furthermore, satyr play is largely based on a repertory of ethological archetypes: i.e. standard figures, which permeate the repertoire of traditional folk narratives and also dominate in other manifestations of folk creativity, such as popular farce. Such figures include the trickster, the glutton, and the jack-of-all trades — the same repertoire of characters that prevail in popular farces of Doric Greece and the Atellana of Italy.

In this respect, satyr play occupies a unique position in the ancient Greek dramatic canon. Tragedy draws (almost) exclusively on myth, but shows no preference for myths with fairy-tale, magical motifs and storylines. The myths treated by satyr play are mostly distinct from those of tragedy, and carry a much greater charge of magical, fabulous, wonderful elements. Comedy, on the other hand, also dramatises myth in a parodic manner (myth burlesque), and often overlaps with the repertoire of the fabulous, fairy-tale stories treated by satyr play. However, in classical myth burlesque the myth is usually rationalised, humanised, placed in an everyday, ordinary milieu that imitates common urban experience. By contrast, in satyr play the magical, fairy-tale elements retain their full supernatural, fabulous, wondrous character. They operate in an alternative world, a different order of existence, in which magic and the miraculous are parts of the established state of things — exactly as in the otherworld of fairy tale.

La serie Fragmenta Comica collegata al progetto "KomFrag" facente capo all'università di Freiburg si è recentemente arricchita di un nuovo volume (10.6) interamente dedicato a una sezione di frammenti di Aristofane provenienti da commedie di cui è noto il titolo. Si tratta dei frammenti 305-391 secondo la numerazione di Kassel e Austin (PCG III 2). Questi ottantasette frammenti (a cui si aggiungono le relative testimonianze) appartengono a cinque commedie perdute di Aristofane: Εἰρήνη β´, Ἥρωες, Θεσμοφοριάζουσαι β´, Κώκαλος, Λήμνιαι. Come previsto dalle linee editoriali della collana, i frammenti riconducibili a ognuna di queste commedie sono preceduti da una preziosa introduzione generale in cui si prendono in esame problemi connessi al titolo, al contenuto e alla datazione delle singole opere perdute. L'edizione dei frammenti è accompagnata da una nuova traduzione e da un ricco commento lemmatico. A loro volta l'edizione e il commento seguono le convenzioni e la struttura ormai consolidate dei Fragmenta Comica. Complice l'ordine alfabetico dei titoli, questo volume comprende ben due casi, peraltro molto problematici, di διασκευαί di commedie conservate (Pace II e Tesmoforiazuse II) e uno degli ultimi lavori del commediografo, il Cocalo, composto da Aristofane, ma messo in scena dal figlio Araros. Data la delicatezza e la complessità dei problemi coinvoltiproblemi che richiedono una visione complessiva della carriera artistica di Aristofane e del suo modo di lavorarenon ci si può che rallegrare del fatto che ad occuparsene sia stata una grande esperta di Aristofane come l'autrice del volume 1 . Né il contenuto dell'opera tradisce le aspettative. Si tratta, infatti, di un lavoro che spicca per ricchezza di erudizione, lucidità e profondità di analisi, equilibrio di giudizio, chiarezza ed eleganza di scrittura. Un saggio di queste qualità si può apprezzare nelle pagine dedicate alla spinosissima questione della datazione di Tesmoforiazuse II (pp. 98-106), a proposito della quale l'autrice, basandosi su un esame puntuale delle diverse proposte finora avanzate, propende con cautela per la datazione tradizionale al biennio successivo al 411/10, anno in cui sarebbero state rappresentate le Tesmoforiazuse conservate. Analoghi pregi si trovano nel commento, dove la vasta documentazione raccoltasempre accuratamente vagliata e valutataaiuta a collocare i frammenti, per quanto possibile, nel loro contesto storico-culturale d'origine e ad apprezzarne le più sottili sfumature stilistiche. Allo stesso tempo, il testo dei frammenti, pur basato sull'edizione di Kassel e Austin, è stato sistematicamente rivisto e ripensato. Giova presentare brevemente alcune delle differenze più significative rispetto a PCG III 2. Il fr. 332 contiene un lungo catalogo di accessori tipici dell'abbigliamento e della toeletta femminili interrotto a più riprese da espressioni ingiuriose (ὄλεθρον τὸν βαθύν, ἐλλέβορον, βάραθρον). Di solito queste inserzioni sono considerate esclamazioni lanciate dalla stessa persona loquensverosimilmente di sesso maschile -a guisa di commenti esasperati sull'interminabile catalogo 2 . La soluzione brillante e innovativa dell'autrice è di considerare queste espressioni «inserzioni bomolochiche del secondo locutore» (p. 119). Di conseguenza, tanto nel testo quanto nella 1 Ricordiamo almeno il fondamentale Imperio 2004. 2 Cf. Lorenzoni 2017, p. 433.

Greek theatre between 2006 and 2019 witnessed profound changes, with the radical reorientation of the Athens – Epidaurus Festival playing a decisive role in a trajectory that was abruptly interrupted in 2020 by the onset of the pandemic. Artistic flourishing unfolded against a backdrop of deep political and social tension caused by the economic crisis and the consequent destabilization of fundamental concepts such as the nation, the People (λαός), solidarity, public action and politics.
Comedy was slower than tragedy to respond to those developments in aesthetic terms. The prevailing popular readings of ancient comedies were rooted to the rather ethnocentric perceptions of folk and popular culture of the Metapolitefsi era on the one hand and intertwined with the local spectacle industry on the other. It was only in 2016 that new trends in the staging of Aristophanic comedies finally suggested the long-anticipated emergence of a paradigm shift. New stagings of adopted post-dramatic approaches and consciously rejected the aesthetics of the “folk festival” and the “revue”, which had reached its artistic and ideological limits.
This study seeks to contribute to the discussion of popular culture in ancient drama reception by arguing that Aristophanes first had to transcend a ‘popular quest’ to attain renewed resonance on the contemporary Greek stage.

Nel presente lavoro è illustrata la maschera "comica" del sicofante, quale emerge da riferimenti, allusioni e metafore ricorrenti in Aristofane e negli altri commediografi del V e IV sec.: la commedia greca sottopone la figura storica, giuridica e sociale del sicofante a una rivisitazione caricaturale, e, per evidenti fini comici, ne altera e esaspera i tratti negativi: ingerenza negli affari privati dei cittadini, arrogante vis accusatoria, venalità, aggressività verbale, disinvolta arte della simulazione e della dissimulazione; un ritratto forse troppo ingeneroso per essere vero, ma senza dubbio efficace per consentire agli spettatori ateniesi di rif lettere (e probabilmente anche di sorridere, sia pure nel breve tempo della rappresentazione teatrale) in merito ai paradossi e alle distorsioni del loro sistema giudiziario. La comparación entre los oradores griegos Demóstenes y Esquines también se estudia mediante el recuento de algunos rasgos lingüísticos que han pasado bastante desapercibidos hasta ahora, y se proyecta a lo que ocurre en otros autores y géneros de la literatura griega.

El término κόμπος y sus cognados presentan gran variedad de usos en los textos literarios, la cual, con frecuencia, resulta confusa. A través del estudio de sus valores y funciones semánticas precisas, se analiza su presencia en la comedia aristofánica (Ar. Ach. 589, 1182; Eq. 696; V. 1248; Au. 1126; Ra. 839, 940, 961).

Aristophanes' Assembly Women [Ecclesiazusae], in the two different translations by Spyros A. Evangelatos, were published in a joint edition, in the research frame “PLUTUS 21. Unpublished translations of ancient drama: Identification – Recording – Collection –Evaluation”, carried out by the Laboratory of Ancient Drama and Theatre Research NKUA (dir. Kaiti Diamantakou).

To paraphrase Anatole France on Rabelais, comic poets play with the names of foods as children do with pebbles: they pile them up into heaps. The long list of foodstuffs is a staple figure in ancient Greek comic drama, from the early myth burlesques of Epicharmus (Hebe’s Wedding, Sirens) to the speeches of the grandiloquent cooks in Middle and New Comedy. Following Epicharmus’ lead, the authors of Old Comedy used the accumulation of foodstuffs as a stylistic trope for the construction of comic utopias or fantastic secondary worlds. In a series of plays based on the fairy-tale theme of the eater’s paradise (Cockaigne), omnicomprehensive catalogues of multifarious delicacies serve to illustrate the magical universe of culinary abundance: the utopian world takes the form of an interminable enumeration of cooked dishes, which are automatically produced from the elements of nature. Aristophanes reworks this trope in an artful and self-conscious manner. In a series of plays, from Acharnians and Knights to Ecclesiazusae and Plutus, the accumulation of foodstuffs becomes an ingredient of the comic hero’s idealised society in the latter part of the play. By contrast to the repetitive manière of the Cockaigne-comedies, whose authors regularly copy each other, Aristophanes employs the food list with considerable ingenuity and inventiveness, creating a new variation in every case.

In the fourth century, the catalogue of foods is mostly placed on the lips of comic cooks, parasites, or hungry slaves. It is now used to illustrate the lavish banquet, which has become a standard part of the typical comic scenario and crowns the celebrations for the happy outcome of the plot. In this comic milieu, the food list is usually of more moderate proportions than the extravagant conceptions of imaginative Old Comedy; the foodstuffs enumerated are commensurate with what might be expected from an opulent but lifelike domestic feast. Nevertheless, on several occasions the culinary catalogue extends beyond the limits of realism and vies with the fantastic lists of Old Comedy in inclusiveness and excess. This is the case in many myth burlesques of Middle Comedy, which follow Epicharmus’ practice in this respect: in the world of travestied myth, dining is an affair of fantastic proportions. Sometimes, however, over-inflated food catalogues, representing a richness and variety impossible in actual circumstances, are included in plays of domestic setting. In these cases, the imaginary bliss of comic fantasy or myth seems to reverberate on the experiences of the ordinary characters in the new type of domestic comic drama.

The paper looks at twelve tragedies of Euripides in which a 'happy' or 'happier' ending plays a prominent role and tries to establish a classification of 'types' of these endings. For Telephus, Alcestis, Dictys, Andromache, Iphigenia among the Taurians, Helen, and Ion, the outcome may be described as a true 'happy end ing', with good people being rewarded and bad people being punished; in Heracles and Oedipus, the respective heroes have to suffer great catastrophes, but in the end their lot is lightened by a sympathetic human being-this may be called a 'happier ending'. Regarding Electra and Orestes, one might speak of 'faux' happy endings, because the main characters are perpetrators of serious crimes (or at least attempt to commit them), and yet are 'rewarded' with a continued existence; and, finally, in Danaë a happy ending seems tantalizingly near, but is cruelly aborted.

This paper introduces a novel transdisciplinary methodology termed "Gematric Geolocation" to analyze 11th-century Coptic magical amulets. Focusing on the Vienna Papyrus Collection fragment P.Vindob. K 10335, the research decodes the ritual formulae of the "Three Bricks of Mary" (Akramak, Ouaramak, Paramak) using Greek/Coptic isopsephy. By treating these numerical values as spatial vectors, the study identifies a precise geospatial convergence upon the Byzantine sacred landscape of Ephesus (Turkey). The methodology suggests that ancient magical names functioned as encoded navigational keys for specific liturgical sites.

As ideias de 'representação do outro' e de 'expressãop de si' parecem ter convivido bem em certas ‘teorias’ (no sentido mais amplo da palavra) da Antiguidade grega a respeito da composição poética, sem que se aplicassem apenas a um tipo específico de poeta e sem que se anulassem mutuamente. É possível verificar essa convivência em Aristófanes, em Platão e em Aristóteles, e em pelo menos alguns casos ela tende a soar paradoxal aos olhos contemporâneos – ou no mínimo pouco harmônica para uma ex-plicação do fazer poético que se queira unificada. A fim de expor a aparente contradição e verificar como se dá a convivência, na prática harmônica, entre os dois lados da moeda poética nos autores supracitados, serão apresentados e analisados exemplos extraídos de As Tesmoforiantes, A República e a Poética.

One of the typical dishes presented in Greek comedy is φακῆ, or lentil soup. It is often portrayed in comedy as a 'poor man's dish'. This is the case in some fragments by Greek comedy writers, such as Epicharmus (fr. 30 K.-A.), Strattis (fr. 47 K.-A.), Eupolis (fr. 378 K.-A.), Aristophanes (frr. 23, 164, 165, 405 K.-A.), Antiphanes (fr. 171, 185 K.-A.) and Diphilus (frr. 42, 60, 64 K.-A.), in which a common thread emerges in relation to this food, namely its simple poverty. The φακῆ, to which the Doric comedian Sopater also dedicates a comedy of the same name (frr. 18, 19 K.-A.), becomes in this sense a symbol of poverty. This aspect is also inherited by the satire of Lucian of Samosata (Saturnalia 35). Even before Lucian (2nd century BC), however, φακῆ became a symbol of poverty in philosophy as well, especially in that of Zeno of Citium, the founder of Stoicism. In fact, Zeno argues that the Stoic sage, who is capable of anything, must also know how to prepare φακῆ sagely. This characteristic of the Stoic sage soon became a source of ridicule and mockery, as demonstrated by some fragments of Timon of Phleius (fr. 787, 788 SH) or Kolotes (fr. 8 CR). Specifically, anti-Stoic satire points to the ability to prepare a φακῆ sagely as an absurdity. An absurdity, moreover, predicted by a philosopher – Zeno the Stoic – whose school was renowned for gathering beggars (Timon, fr. 813 SH). In this paper, I therefore propose to clarify how φακῆ became, between Greek comedy and Greek satire, from a dish symbolising poverty and simplicity at the table (in Greek comedy) to a symbol of the philosopher's misery.

The festival of ancient Greek drama at the theatre of Epidavros celebrated its fortieth year in the summer of 1994. The theatre was excavated in 1881 by the archaeologist Panayis Kabbadias, but it was not until the autumn of 1938 that the theatre hosted its first performance of ancient Greek tragedy. The Royal Theatre of Greece (later to become the National Theatre) presented Sophocles' Electra under the direction of Dimitris Rondiris on 11 September 1938. That initiative was cut short by the Second World War, however. Fourteen years later, on 11 July 1954, Dimitris Rondiris inaugurated the summer performances of Greek tragedy, which took the name 'Festival of Epidavros' in the following year. The first play performed at the new festival was the National Theatre's production of Euripides' Hippolytus, which established a tradition which has continued unbroken to the present day and has enabled many Greek and foreign theatrical companies to present plays in a variety of styles.

In Plato’s Ion, the character of Socrates claims that poets operate not on the basis of “knowledge or mastery” (i.e. episteme and techne, respectively) regarding what they discuss, but divine inspiration, and this claim seems to anticipate the views expressed Plato’s later works about knowledge (episteme) like the Republic. At first glance, it is not entirely obvious why Socrates concludes this, but a close reading of the dialogue, its movements, and the images we are given of the characters provide clues about Plato’s epistemology which motivates the explanation of divine inspiration. 
In this essay, I will argue that Ion is claimed to rhapsodize on the basis of divine inspiration because he fails to demonstrate and meet the conditions of episteme, but also that Ion’s failure is revelatory of a feature of Platonic knowledge missing from much of the secondary literature. As we shall see, Socrates’s claim that Ion’s rhapsodic success is due to divine inspiration can be drawn from a number of dialogic factors (e.g. the character and behavior of Ion himself, his auto-biographical remarks during the conversation, and his inability to demonstrate generalized knowledge and expertise of Homer’s poetic subjects), and this failure illustrates that Plato conceives of knowledge (episteme) as having a property of  generalizability. Furthermore, I argue that Plato implies this feature of generalizability in his remarks on knowledge in “Book VI” and “Book VII” in the Republic through his illustrations of the ‘divided line’ the allegory of the cave, as well as his remarks on the higher education of potential philosopher-kings. Explicating this feature of Platonic knowledge should help readers make more sense not only of the Ion but also Plato’s theory of knowledge in general and his remarks on knowledge in his other works, opening up new paths for research into Plato’s metaphysical epistemology.

This study reassesses the seven pseudepigraphic letters attributed to Socrates, with particular attention to Epistles 1 and 6. These texts fashion a moralizing and doctrinaire Socrates grounded in Xenophon yet selectively shaped by Platonic themes – adopting elements such as the daimonion while rejecting Platonic political ambitions and the ironic elenctic posture. The letters develop a coherent ethical program centred on wealth, self-sufficiency, friendship, parrhesia, and the refusal to teach for pay. Although they echo Cynic and Stoic motifs, they function primarily as epistolary diatribes that recast Socrates as a paradigmatic sage. Read as “half-dialogues,” the letters extend the tradition of Socrates as a teacher engaged in a continuous, if fictional, philosophical exchange.

No presente capítulo analisamos a fabricação da imagem de Domiciano (81-96 d.C.) a partir das práticas de elogio literário no contexto do patronato imperial flaviano, tomando como eixo interpretativo a sistematização retórica do encômio presente em Menandro, o Retor (sécs. III-IV). Partimos do debate historiográfico acerca do patronato romano e buscamos demonstrar que as relações entre os poetas e a casa imperial ultrapassavam uma lógica meramente ornamental, e constituía-se como espaço de negociação política, social e simbólica. A análise de testemunhos de autores como Estácio, Marcial, Quintiliano, Suetônio e Tácito nos evidencia que o elogio imperial integrava um sistema de trocas no qual benefícios materiais e imateriais eram concedidos em contrapartida à construção e difusão de representações laudatórias do princeps. Ao articular essas evidências com os tópoi do elogio imperial descritos por Menandro, tais como a família, a origem, a educação, as virtudes, os feitos militares e as ações em tempos de paz, argumentamos que a produção poética flaviana mobilizou conscientemente convenções epidíticas para amplificar a virtus de Domiciano e consolidar sua legitimidade. Concluímos que o elogio literário deve ser compreendido como instrumento ativo de propaganda e como elemento central na dinâmica de poder do Principado, revelando-se fundamental para a compreensão das disputas em torno da memória e da imagem do último flaviano.

This article aims to reconstruct the history of the gloss μάχλος· ὁ δίυγρος, attested in Suetonius and borrowed by Eustathius, who also mentions an ἄμπελος ῥεομένη that Aeschylus called μάχλος. After re-examining the dogma, proposed by the Philaeterus (an Atticist lexicon falsely attributed to Herodian) and accepted by several modern dictionaries, that μάχλος was referred to women—a dogma contradicted both by literary attestations and by non-Atticist lexica— I discuss the origin of μάχλος and its relationship to μάχομαι (it has already been noticed that both imply aggressivity, if not even hybris). With the help of Theophrastus, I identify the ἄμπελος ῥεομένη with the grapes that fall from the tree without ripening, as well as with the vine whose overdeveloped foliage has prevented their ripening. This process was often described with the verb διυγραίνω, which explains Suetonius’ word choice: with δίυγρος ὑπὸ καταφερείας he intends to refer to a man who is dissipated by wantonness.
