Huw Price

The relationship between truth and reality constitutes one of the most enduring and contested problems in philosophy. While ordinary language frequently conflates the two concepts, careful analysis reveals a fundamental asymmetry: reality designates what exists independently of any mind or discourse, whereas truth is a property attributed to propositions, beliefs, or statements made about that reality. This article examines the conceptual distinction between truth and reality across major philosophical traditions-correspondence theory, coherentism, pragmatism, and constructivism-before analysing the principal strategies philosophers and scientists have employed to dissolve, negotiate, or transcend what might otherwise appear as an irresolvable dichotomy. It is argued that the persistence of confusion between truth and reality is not merely a linguistic accident but reflects deep structural tensions within human cognition, and that the most productive responses to this tension neither collapse the distinction nor treat it as unbridgeable, but instead develop richer, more layered conceptual vocabularies adequate to both epistemological rigour and ontological humility.

El presente artículo se propone revisar algunos de los argumentos de Richard Rorty en favor de la eliminación o reducción del concepto de verdad, especialmente en lo que respecta a su dimensión normativa. En primer lugar, expondré la propuesta de Rorty, para luego mostrar algunas de las objeciones más significativas a su sugerencia de transformar la búsqueda de la objetividad en un intento de ampliar la solidaridad. Posteriormente, expondré algunos de los argumentos en favor de la posición de Rorty, que abogan por naturalizar o reducir la dimensión normativa de la verdad. Por último, defenderé que, pese a que la verdad tenga una dimensión social innegable, no parece que podamos deshacernos de ella tan fácilmente

Riemer's paper discusses a neglected yet important topic in the psychological literature: the consequences for psychology (and psychophysics) from the 'anisotropy' of time. The paper presents an argument that there are unique kinds of challenges for psychophysics from such temporal anisotropy: (a) Challenges because the psychological experience of time has temporal anisotropy and the physical concept of time does not have temporal anisotropy. (b) Challenges for experimental research which are unique to temporal anisotropy. Although it is important to consider temporal anisotropy, I think there are reasons to deny the force of both kinds of challenges. With respect to 'a', the problem for physics is not so much with temporal anisotropy as it is with temporal order. Although temporal order is a kind of anisotropy, it is significantly different to others with respect to the physics of time. It is global and absolute and irreducible to differences in non-temporal physical structure. Further, the problem of such temporal order is not obviously applicable to psychological phenomena nor, if applicable, particular to it. It is found between fundamental physics and other non-psychological scientific theories (such as thermodynamics). With respect to 'b', it is not clear that the problems Riemer raises for experimental research are unique to temporal anisotropy. There are analogous problems with other kinds of anisotropy-for example, spatial anisotropy. However, I think that Riemer's reasons are justified if one considers them as coming from intuitive metaphysical positions on time which hold that there is temporal order rather than just temporal anisotropy. Yet, one need not hold these positions on time. And, further, philosophers of time and physicists who accept the physical time assumed in this paper do not accept these positions. Liberal naturalism has been recently presented by several authors as the most credible form of philosophical naturalism. Generally speaking, it is the view according to which there are non-scientific entities, and related forms of inquiry, which nevertheless fall under the scope of the 'natural'. In this paper, I argue that there are a few weaknesses in liberal naturalism as it has been formulated so far in the literature, and suggest some amendments. The result is a view which is 1) primarily based on considerations concerning explanatory usefulness rather than on a fixed differentiation among types of entities; and 2) at the same time stricter and even more liberal in the definition of the domain of non-scientific yet naturalistically acceptable entities.

This article explains the concept of "warranted assertability" as part of the programme of naturalisation of logic elaborated by John Dewey in his Logic: The Theory of Inquiry. In order to clarify its meaning, three common confusions in the interpretations it has received from other philosophers are pointed out: between affirmations and assertions, between propositions and judgements, and between facts and situations. We conclude that these distinctions render ineffective some of the most frequent criticisms of the concept of warranted assertability in relation to the concept of truth.

In their recent paper, "Epistemology for Beginners: Two to Five-Year-Old Children's Representation of Falsity," Olivier Mascaro and Olivier Morin study the ontogeny of a naïve understanding of truth in humans. Their paper is fascinating for several reasons, but most striking is their claim (given a rather optimistic reading of epistemology) that toddlers as young as two can, at times, recognize false from true assertions. Their Optimistic Epistemology Hypothesis holds that children seem to have an innate capacity to represent a state of affairs truthfully. In the following paper, I investigate the problems this research poses for deflationist theories of truth. Richard Rorty and Huw Price hold that the best way to understand truth or "the truth" is to understand the necessary conditions required for assertoric practice. Both philosophers present unique and very different deflationary theories when it comes to construing truth. I argue that neither philosopher's approach is successful because they focus on truth and fail to recognize truthfulness as a norm of assertoric practice. I show that truthfulness is the elusive third norm of claim-based discourse and is consistent with Mascaro and Morin's findings.

It is argued that the emergence of controversial views in discussions of theoretical medicine and bioethics is best explained by the assumption of moral realism within those discursive practices. Neither of the main alternatives of realism in contemporary meta-ethics - moral expressivism and anti-realism-  can account for the rise of controversies in the bioethical debate. This argument draws from the contemporary expressivist or anti-representationalist pragmatism as advanced by Richard Rorty and Huw Price, as well as the pragmatist scientific realism and fallibilism of the founder of pragmatism, Charles S. Peirce. In accordance with the fallibilist view, it is proposed that presenting controversial positions may serve epistemic purposes within bioethical debates, providing opportunities for inquiry by pointing towards problems to be solved and arguments and evidence for and against to be put forward.

RESUMEN: En su libro Time's Arrow and Archimedes' Point, Huw Price critica los argumentos de algunos cosmólogos contemporáneos acerca del origen cosmológico de la flecha del tiempo, quienes supuestamente no logran adoptar un punto de vista atemporal. En este artículo se analizan las críticas de Price a la propuesta de Stephen Hawking, argumentando que sus conclusiones se basan en supuestos cuestionables desde un punto de vista científico. Esta tarea abre el camino hacia un enfoque global no-entrópico de la flecha del tiempo, que permite establecer un nuevo diálogo con la propuesta de Price.

Discursive pluralism, recently fostered by anti-representationalist views, by stating that not all assertions conform to a descriptive model of language, poses an interesting challenge to representationalism.  Although in recent years alethic pluralism has become more and more popular as an interesting way out for this issue, the discussion also hosts other interesting minority approaches in the anti-  representationalist  camp.  In particular, the late stage of contemporary  expressivism offers a few relevant insights, going from Price's denunciation of “placement problems” to Brandom's inferentialism. This paper attempts to show how these expressivist ideas combine well together, composing a unitary and metaphysically sober metaphilosophical framework.

The paper starts by highlighting that virtually nobody would object to claims such as “to regard an assertion or a belief or a thought as true or false is to regard it as being right or wrong”—a claim that shows that truth is intrinsically normative. It is well known that alethic deflationists deny this. Paul Horwich, for instance, maintains that nothing shows that TRUTH is a normative concept in the way that OUGHT is. By relying on a distinction among dimensions of normativity I will try to pinpoint the weakness of Horwich’s argument in the fact that he works with a strong, uncalled-for, interpretation of normativity, whereas a weaker interpretation is more than enough. However, the impression might persist that a different understanding of the normativity of truth on the part of deflationists could eventually show the compatibility between alethic deflationism and normativity. I argue for two claims: that the ordinary English truth predicate is a gradable adjective and that truth is a property that comes in degrees. e rst is a semantic claim, motivated by the linguistic evidence and the similarity of the truth predicate's behavior to other gradable terms. e second is a claim in natural language metaphysics, motivated by interpreting the best semantic analysis of gradable terms as applied to the truth predicate. In addition to providing arguments for these two claims, I draw out consequences for debates about de ationism and truth-based analyses of notions such as assertion and logical consequence.

A perennial issue in contemporary philosophy is the question of how, in Wilfrid Sellars' terms, categories of the 'manifest image' relate to those of the 'scientific image'. A widespread kind of naturalism assumes that the categories of science have a certain kind of ontological priority and that other categories (meaning, mind, morality and so on) have to be somehow placed or located in the world of science to be fully vindicated. Huw Price has argued in several papers that if one gives up a view of how language functions he calls 'representationalism' then this way of understanding placement problems-object naturalism-necessarily lapses. Price argues that in foregoing representationalism and embracing semantic deflationism we should remain naturalists, but subject naturalists, seeking to understand the function our different discourses play in our lives as natural beings: the project of global expressivism. This argument has recently been challenged by several authors who argue that object naturalism can coherently and rationally be pursued within a semantic deflationist framework. I will argue that these objections to Price's view are all ultimately unconvincing given a wide enough purview of the dialectic. The viability and coherence of global expressivism itself, and whether it is the only possible form of subject naturalism, are briefly addressed in conclusion.

Contemporary expressivists typically deny that all true judgments must represent reality. Many instead adopt truth minimalism, according to which there is no substantive property of judgments in virtue of which they are true. In this article, I suggest that expressivists would be better suited to adopt truth pluralism, or the view that there is more than one substantive property of judgments in virtue of which judgments are true. My point is not that an expressivism that takes this form is true, but that it more readily accommodates the motivations that typically lead expressivists to their view in the first place. (2) No value judgment represents reality. (3) All true judgments represent reality. This is a familiar, if inconsistent, triad. Value judgments like harming innocents is wrong seem true, and a venerable tradition has it that true judgments represent how things are. But to many philosophers, it also seems that there is nothing in the world-no properties of facts-that such judgments represent or even could represent.

The argument for Idealism is derived from the Pittsburgh Hegelian
school's famous epithet that the "space of reasons is _sui
generis_". However these followers of Sellars have usually opted to
become what they describe as "expressivists" with respect to
normativity. That is to say, the meaning of a proposition with
normative content is simply an expression of support for, or a
rejection of its meaning.

Huw Price, although technically of Cambridge and Australian ilk, would
not find resistance from the likes of say, Robert Brandom when it
comes to specifying the metaphysical status of a normative
concept. Both would regard moral facts as objects of a dubious
trustworthiness. Indeed, while both avowed 'Pragmatists', as far as
intellectual allegiances go, they have have, in fact, embraced the
Empiricist horn of the traditions contained within Pragmatism.

The future of pragmatism There are certain uses of the term "pragmatism" that even philosophers who sympathise with this doctrine would prefer not to be associated with their own enterprises. Peirce himself, in his own time, wished to invent a new word "pragmaticism" to dissociate himself from the "kidnappers" who started to divert pragmatism and transformed it into the kind of anti-realistic vulgarly utilitarian and flatly businesslike conceptions that this doctrine often evokes.

This chapter draws on the work of Robert B. Brandom, Huw Price, Cheryl Misak, Robert B. Talisse and Scott F. Aikin to sketch a narrative suggesting that the most interesting and important work in contemporary pragmatism is that which, explicitly or implicitly, brings together its theoretical commitments in epistemology and in political theory.

En el presente trabajo me ocupare de abordar criticamente el debate entre Pascal Engel y Richard Rorty en torno a la importancia de la nocion de verdad para la caracterizacion de la asercion. Se mostraran las ventajas teoricas que tiene la posicion conversacionalista rortiana en su rechazo de la idea de la verdad como norma asertiva. Para ello, en primer lugar, hare una presentacion del deflacionismo rortiano. Luego presentare la defensa engeliana de la idea de la verdad como norma, para, finalmente, mostrar que la misma es superable desde la posicion conversacionalista. A lo largo de la argumentacion se cuestionaran a su vez algunos desarrollos de Akeel Bilgrami, Harry Frankfurt y Huw Price que podrian serle utiles a la posicion de Engel.
