O objetivo é perceber como o veículo materializa a experiência do rompimento da barragem do Fundão, pertencente à Samarco, em Mariana (MG), evento traumático das coletividades locais, por meio de sua narração, compreendendo o jornalismo contemporâneo como meio e possibilidade para tal. Ao mesmo tempo, o trabalho procura problematizar tal estratégia de construção do acontecimento catastrófico nas páginas de jornais. Nos debruçamos sobre o texto impresso nas matérias do jornal com o aporte das abordagens psicanalíticas sobre o trauma e estudos do campo do jornalismo sobre a cobertura de riscos e catástrofes, ancorados na análise de conteúdo.

Nos ultimos anos, algumas empresas jornalisticas adotaram softwares de Natural Language Generation (NLG) para produzir conteudos automatizados em coberturas de financas, esportes, eleicoes, crimes, terremotos, fenomeno este denominado Jornalismo Automatizado (GRAEFE, 2016) ou Jornalismo Algoritmico (DORR, 2015). Partindo de um ponto de vista simetrico e nao-antropocentrico para observar os agenciamentos entre atores humanos e nao-humanos, como defendido pela Teoria Ator-Rede (LATOUR, 1992, 1994, 2000), este artigo pretende apresentar e problematizar duas das redes sociotecnicas que se articulam em torno do jornalismo automatizado. A quasi-experiment tests six hypotheses predicting that social language would increase the feeling of social presence among readers of online journalism. Participants read eight articles in one of eight Conditions created by four manipulations: use or absence of one of the four aspects of social language. T-Test, ANOVA & ANCOVA were used to test the effects of the manipulations on social presence among readers. It was found that social language increased social presence among readers in the four manipulations. The effect of both interactive language and cohesive language is stronger than the effect of affective language. Social language can compensate the lack of nonverbal cues in face to face communication and that can help online journalism to encourage readers to participate and interact with journalists.

Fact-checking has been identified as a significant journalistic tool in the fight against disinformation. Relevant studies have focused on its emergence as a movement within journalism aiming at renewing the profession, as well as its effectiveness in challenging disinformation, especially during elections. However, little has been said about how audiences themselves understand factchecking and employ it in their daily consumption of news. In this article, we answer these questions by drawing upon two sets of data. The first consists of fourteen focus group discussions in the UK, which included 52 participants, and were conducted online between April and May 2021. The second consists of two qualitative surveys that explored news consumers' understandings of fact-checking and their evaluations of current fact-checking practices of UK media during the same period. We conclude that the use of fact-checking remains largely peripheral, and its influence is minimal in people's news consumption. However, there is an appetite for more fact-checking in television news, as a way of holding politicians into account and helping the public better understand politics. In this context, we argue, if factchecking is to play an important role in political discourse, it should become a regular part of broadcast journalism.

This paper has aimed to overview the current situations of online journalism, its characteristics and implications to other journalisms, and tried to evaluate the impact and challenges to democracy and the public opinion in Japan. What I would like to suggest is that any study of what is going on the website in terms of Journalism should start with a clear understanding about the actual condition of the public opinion, politics and culture of the society. I consider this paper as a preliminary attempt to provide such a description hopefully leading to better understanding Japanese society and public opinion, and a redefinition of online journalism strategies, as well as a starting point for comparing various societies.

Australian journalism schools are full of students who have never met an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island person and who do not know their history. Journalism educators are ill-equipped to redress this imbalance as a large majority are themselves non-Indigenous and many have had little or no experience with the coverage of Indigenous issues or knowledge of Indigenous affairs. Such a situation calls for educational approaches that can overcome these disadvantages and empower journalism graduates to move beyond the stereotypes that characterize the representation of Indigenous people in the mainstream media. Эпидемия в зеркале медийного дискурса: факты, оценки, позиции АННОТАЦИЯ. Рассматривается отражение мировой эпидемии в медийном дискурсе. Информацию в интернете о коронавирусе можно разбить на следующие группы сведений: 1) определение заболевания, его история и характеристики; 2) деятельность властей по борьбе с эпидемией; 3) прогнозы специалистов по развитию заболевания; 4) комментарии пользователей интернета об этом вирусе. Установлено несколько основных видов реакций на апокалиптическую угрозу нынешнего дня: 1) распространение информации о положении дел, 2) эмоциональный отклик на новости, 3) попытки найти рациональные или иррациональные объяснения случившемуся, 4) советы и рекомендации, 5) сведение информации к комическому абсурду и 6) откровенный троллинг интернет-сообщества ради сомнительного самоутверждения. Реакция активной части публики на информацию о коронавирусе в значительной степени эмоциональна, объяснения происходящего носят как рациональный, так и мистический характер, обвинения в адрес власти сводятся к обличению ее некомпетентности и политически маркированы, в публичном анонимном дискурсе высока доля сарказма и черного юмора. Исследование демонстрирует, что сетевой дискурс и блоги стали существенным компонентом медийной коммуникации, изменилось понимание достоверности распространяемых сведений в сфере массовой информации: если раньше напечатанные в газете или озвученные по радио или телевидению сведения многими воспринимались как достоверные, то в эпоху постмодерна фейки и факты заняли почти равные позиции в потоке новостей.

As cousins, we discovered a treasure trove of family papers revealing the intricate relationship between precarity and privilege for our family from Salonica as they navigated the post-Ottoman transition. Recognising the potential of family history to provide a more intimate and complex historiography, this article offers our initial study of these family papers. By highlighting the challenges posed by the scarcity of such documents in Middle Eastern studies, emphasising women’s roles in preserving family memory and focussing on the interplay between personal and political domains, we identify the preparation of a family tree as a gendered and socioeconomic project of preserving the past and shaping the present. By tracing our family's origins, including unsettling discoveries, we address matters of identity and memory before embarking on our analysis. By reconstructing the biographies of two generations, we characterise the family’s socioeconomic struggle to sustain their precarious privilege amid shifting frontiers and along their journey from Ottoman Salonica to Kemalist Turkey. Ultimately, this article underscores the significance of family history as a transnational, intergenerational, intersectional and social history that enriches our understanding of the post-Ottoman transition through the lives of ordinary (and some extraordinary) Ottomans.

Studies on corruption coverage by newspapers in Nigeria during the Buhari administration focused on broad corruption issues, his first tenure, and almost zero studies on anti-corruption during his ongoing second tenure to lapse in 2023. This study aims to examine anti-corruption reporting by two Nigerian newspapers, Daily Trust and The Nation, within the first and second tenures of the Buhari administration. The study content-analyzed 475 editorial contents covering the first year in each of the first and second tenures (2015/2016 and 2019/2020). Findings revealed that The Nation reported more stories on anti-corruption than the Daily Trust in both the first and second tenures. However, both newspapers recorded a significant drop in corruption coverage in the second tenure. News stories took the lead in the first and second tenures, with 72.4% and 84.4%, respectively. The study found that both newspapers published more front and back page contents in the first tenure than in the second tenure, but published less front and back page reports on corruption compared to reports on the inside pages during the period of study. The newspapers also published more stories, measuring more than 100 lines during the second tenure than the first. In contrast, more uncritical reports of anti-corruption were published in the first tenure than in the second by the two. The study concluded that poor investigative journalism drive, among other factors, was responsible for the decline in corruption reports, especially during the 2019/2020 period. It recommends that newspapers strive not to allow ethno-religious interests to influence editorial responses on corruption and increase their investigative journalism drive to win the corruption war in the country.

Kemudahan yang ditawarkan media sosial menjadikannya sarana komunikasi yang sangat efektif dalam berbagai bidang, mulai dari pendidikan, bisnis, dakwah, hingga hubungan sosial antarindividu. Di samping memberikan berbagai manfaat, media sosial juga menghadirkan tantangan yang tidak sedikit. Banyak pengguna memanfaatkan media sosial untuk menyebarkan informasi yang belum tentu benar, mengomentari kehidupan orang lain secara berlebihan, bahkan melakukan perundungan dan penyebaran aib. Fenomena seperti ujaran kebencian, fitnah, ghibah, dan pencarian kesalahan orang lain semakin mudah ditemukan dalam ruang digital. When former U.S. Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei on August 2, 2022, China launched one of its largest military drills around Taiwan, escalating China-United States conflicts. This study analyzes the Guardian’s coverage of the controversial visit during three research periods. It examines the extent to which peace journalism frames were present in The Guardian’s news stories, as well as the Facebook comments posted in response to the newspaper’s articles. Quantitative findings reveal that the news coverage before, during, and after the visit was dominated by quotes from the United States (23.2%), Chinese (30.4%), and Taiwanese officials (25.4%), with minimal representation of activists (0.6%) and ordinary people (1.15%). Additionally, the newspaper’s articles prominently applied the solution (38.1%) and people (14.3%) frames. However, the study argues that such applications were influenced by developments on the ground and what was happening “here and now.” Interestingly, Facebook comments on The Guardian’s coverage showed a notable tendency to apply peace journalism frames (22.9%), with a strong emphasis on peace initiatives. More than half (55.5%) of the peace journalism-oriented comments applied the solution frame. Contrary to dominant literature, this study concludes that digital platforms may provide greater opportunities for audiences to consider nonviolent responses to conflicts.

Au final, le développement du cinéma turc repose davantage sur la société civile que sur une politique audiovisuelle cohérente et structurée à l'échelle nationale.

This paper describes a curious meeting in Glasgow between Joseph Conrad and the Scottish writer and journalist Neil Munro in the year 1898. Conrad was visiting Glasgow with the aim of giving up literature and finding a captaincy in order to return to the sea. He met Munro partly because he admired Munro's works, partly because Munro had reviewed his published work favourably. They had a bibulous dinner at the home of X-ray pioneer Dr John McIntyre, and then a night-time stroll through the city which culminated in an uproarious outbreak of schoolboy japery. This article describes the meeting and outlines its significance in Conrad's life and career, while also introducing Munro and his work in order to explain why Conrad felt the need to meet up with him. The meeting is discussed in terms of how it represents a perhaps surprising connection between 'creative' writing and commercial journalism.

EXTENDED ABSTRACT From the very beginnings of human history, efforts to build communication have played the central role among the individuals in a community. Communication can be described as exchanging information through various forms such as speaking, writing or drawing as done on the walls of the caves in ancient times. When people start communication, they send or receive information in various forms. Messages that are exchanged need to be comprehensible and meaningful. Otherwise, the communication process is likely to be disrupted and finalized. Another channel through which messages transmitted is media sources. Media sources are responsible for disseminating information as news. It is another form of information that is new and fresh. Simply put, news is information about recent events published in print and electronic media which is not limited to a country or a particular area of activity as it is disseminated worldwide. Les « médias alternatifs » sont, à Bémur comme ailleurs, difficiles à définir. Médias indépendants, locaux, engagés, associatifs ou citoyens sont quelques-uns des qualificatifs indigènes employés localement. Cette enquête constitue la suite du travail commencé dans le cadre d’un Master 1 de recherche en sociologie sur un espace médiatique local dans lequel onze médias avaient été sélectionnés. En reprenant le matériau d’enquête, une question de recherche émerge. D’après le questionnaire diffusé, le temps d’investissement des enquêtés dans cet espace est en moyenne de deux à cinq ans. Cependant, les premières analyses montrent que le temps d’investissement n’est pas le même en fonction de l'origine sociale. Les filles et fils de cadre ou profession intellectuelle supérieure sont nombreux à être investi depuis cinq à dix ans dans un média, et parmi les personnes investies depuis plus de dix ans ne figurent que des enfants de cadre ou profession intellectuelle supérieure sauf un fils de commerçant et assimilés. Les filles et fils d’ouvrier sont majoritairement investis depuis deux à cinq ans tandis qu’un seul enfant d'ouvrier est investi depuis cinq ans ou plus… Or, une première consultation des pages « qui sommes-nous » des sites web des médias permet de voir qu'une majorité des médias enquêtés met au centre de son travail la lutte contre les discriminations, qu'elles soient de classe, de genre ou de sexualité. Plusieurs médias écrivent ainsi « lutter contre toutes les formes de discrimination ». Dans quelle mesure la structuration de l’espace médiatique local, marquée par la domination des classes supérieures ainsi que par les luttes entre des médias professionnels et des médias militants, détermine-t-elle les conditions différenciées d’accès à cet espace ? Le mémoire répond à cette question en mobilisant questionnaire (N=59), entretiens (N=22), travail ethnographique (un an), observations et matériau d’archives. Il montre que la composition sociale de la population des journalistes « alternatifs » de Bémur s’avère très polarisée avec une majorité d’enfants des fractions de classes supérieures, une quasi absence d’enfants de milieux intermédiaires et une moindre part d’enfants issus des classes populaires. Si les premiers convertissent leurs capitaux hérités en positions dominantes, les seconds s’inscrivent dans des trajectoires de continuité, tandis que les derniers se heurtent aux limites de leur mobilité ascendante et réinvestissent souvent un espace dominé.

Uno di questi contesti è quello giudiziario, dove approdano anche i drammi legati all’abuso delle piattaforme social e delle app di messaggistica. Per esempio, capita quando questi strumenti sono usati per ricattare, opprimere, vendicarsi, per molestare sessualmente o per praticare mobbing, stalking o bullismo. Purpose: Journalistic startups are thriving around the world, bringing new approaches to the news media environment in terms of concepts, contents, dissemination, internal organization, and business models. This research is relevant to create a prospective view on the evolution of the news media business in the next years, also allowing us to identify some trends and experiences which can be useful to future researchers work, and for professionals of news media companies, startups or not, to get some insights that might help to develop (or even save) their own businesses. Drawing on Expectancy Violations Theory (EVT), we conducted 60 semi-structured interviews to examine (1) how news audiences in Australia and Germany form expectations about journalists’ use of generative AI (GenAI); (2) the antecedents shaping those expectations; and (3) how they evaluate perceived expectation violations. Participants envisioned journalism as a human-centered practice, rejecting autonomous GenAI use in core reporting functions. Transparency, disclosure, and oversight (whether regulatory or newsroom-led) were treated as conditions of legitimacy. Expectations were shaped by institutional trust, everyday experiences with AI, and broader reputations of AI technologies. Participants described negative violations linked to perceived ethical lapses, though some reported positive violations when AI enhanced accessibility or efficiency. Our findings demonstrate how audience responses to GenAI are not merely technological assessments, but relational evaluations grounded in normative expectations about journalism.

Existing studies across Geography and related fields have yet to develop a sustained account of how new and emergent digital technologies reconfigure popular resistance and dissent under authoritarianism. This article examines digital platforms as key sites of anti-establishment politics, focusing on how data-driven systems and artificial intelligence (AI) reshape the infrastructures through which protest is organized, coordinated, mediated, and governed. It argues that while datafied environments and AI tools operate as sites of power-facilitating state-, corporate-, and platform-mediated forms of control, surveillance, and repressionthey simultaneously open up possibilities for coordination, amplification, and transnational visibility, enabling resistance across both street-level and networked spaces. Drawing on two East African movements and modes of organizing-the popular Digital Maandamano protests in Kenya and more diffuse forms of nonconformist digital activism and resistance in Uganda-the article shows how, under conditions of heightened authoritarian pressure, populations carve out both virtual and embodied spaces to challenge entrenched power structures and expand the scope for political action. It advances an analytical agenda that treats digitalization as locally adapted, resisted, and reconfigured, foregrounding citizens, particularly youth, as active agents shaping alternative political trajectories.

This article examines how protest drones reconfigure relations of visibility and power within mass demonstrations. Drawing on 69 interviews conducted during Israel's 2023-2025 anti-government protests, we analyze how a self-organized collective of drone operators produced aerial footage that became central to the movement's visual identity. Rather than approaching protest drones through veillance typologies that presume external targets, we build on atmospheric politics (Kaplan, 2020) and sociotechnical approaches to drone vision (Klauser and Pedrozo, 2015) to examine how drones operate within ambiguous airspace and produce inward-oriented forms of collective visibility. We introduce collectiveillance to capture configurations in which aerial visibility is oriented toward the protesting collective itself and stabilized through attribution and alignment among operators, protesters, and audiences. Participants rarely understood protest drones as surveillance tools or as a means of sousveillance aimed at reversing the state's gaze. Instead, the drone's gaze was largely experienced as inward-looking and legitimizing. At the same time, protest drone practices reproduced asymmetries of technical expertise, editorial authority, and gendered divisions of labor, reflecting the continued influence of militaristic and surveillant legacies. Across four analytical dimensions, the findings show how collectiveillance emerges from specific sociotechnical conditions. Concentrated military and technological backgrounds shaped representational authority, while vertical mobility and horizontal networking expanded protest space and reconfigured collective presence. Collectiveillance thus names a sociotechnical arrangement characterized by collaborative visibility production alongside persistent power asymmetries. The article extends scholarship on civic drone use by moving beyond surveillance-reversal narratives and foregrounding how aerial technologies mediate collective political subjectivity through contested practices of seeing and being seen.

Perkembangan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi (TIK) yang melaju pesat telah mengubah lanskap interaksi manusia dan sistem norma sosial yang mengontrol ketertiban masyarakat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh penetrasi teknologi terhadap pergeseran sistem norma serta mengidentifikasi pola rekonstruksi sosial di kalangan generasi muda. Menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus melalui wawancara mendalam terhadap mahasiswi di STIKES Bina Bangsa Majene, penelitian ini mengonfirmasi adanya distorsi etika komunikasi di ruang siber. Hasil temuan lapangan menunjukkan bahwa masyarakat akademik menyadari fungsi norma sebagai pengatur lembaga, namun menghadapi tantangan nyata di era digital berupa maraknya penyebaran hoaks, penggunaan bahasa tidak sopan, penyebaran privasi (stiker aib), hingga pergeseran norma kemandirian akademik akibat ketergantungan masif pada Kecerdasan Buatan (AI) seperti ChatGPT. Meskipun teknologi menggerus tata kelakuan tertentu, generasi muda menyadari urgensi pembatasan penggunaan media sosial dan pentingnya pendidikan etika digital sejak dini. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa literasi digital yang menanamkan nilainilai humanis dan kesantunan harus diintegrasikan dalam institusi pendidikan untuk menjaga harmoni sosial di era siber.

تهدف هذه الدراسة الاستكشافية إلى استعراض واقع الأدبيات المنشورة حول دمج الذكاء الاصطناعي في برامج تعليم علوم المكتبات والمعلومات، وذلك من خلال مقارنة الأدبيات العربية والإنجليزية خلال الفترة من 2019 إلى 2024. وقد تبين من خلال هذه الدراسة وجود فجوة كبيرة بين الأدبيات العربية والإنجليزية في هذا المجال، حيث تفوقت الأدبيات الإنجليزية من حيث الكم والتنوع. كما أظهرت الدراسة تركيز الأدبيات العربية بشكل أكبر على الجوانب التقنية للذكاء الاصطناعي، بينما تناولت الأدبيات الإنجليزية جوانب أكثر شمولية مثل المناهج التدريسية والبرامج الأكاديمية. وتوصي الدراسة بزيادة الاهتمام بالأبحاث العربية في هذا المجال، وتطوير مناهج تعليمية متكاملة تعتمد على الذكاء الاصطناعي، وتقييم تأثير دمج الذكاء الاصطناعي على جودة التعليم ومخرجاته.

Building on Part I's conceptual history of mis-/disinformation, désinformation, and related French terms-and its finding of substantial definitional flux-Part II examines the epistemological stakes of the ontological assumptions that currently organize anglophone and francophone research. Through a comparative review of recent literatures (including expanded francophone searches across multiple translations and near-synonyms such as fausses informations, fausses nouvelles, and information erronée/inexacte), the article maps (1) the distribution of theoretical, empirical, and methodological approaches, (2) keyword clusters that signal what scholars implicitly treat as the phenomenon's referents, and (3) the media "units" most often analyzed (e.g., posts, images, videos, articles, messages). Across corpora, it identifies a shared "hole": limited attention to persuasive strategy, performance, and the agency of form in multimodal expression. The paper argues that this gap is not accidental but is encouraged by an infocentric framing that reduces complex communicative acts to "(false) information," thereby importing transmission models and cognitivist/behaviorist assumptions that flatten meaning, rhetoric, and interpretation. Re-situating current "information disorder" discourse within critical histories of communication theory (from Shannon-Weaver and Lasswell to critiques by Peters and Carey, alongside francophone infocom debates), the article concludes by calling for research that moves beyond "false information" as a master category and instead theorizes how deceptive phenomena are assembled, stylized, and rendered believable in situated media practices.

Generative AI applications have been hailed as "transformative," "disruptive," and posing a "threat to human journalists and media professionals." Much of this discourse reflects longstanding concerns about the impact of technological change on both the production and consumption ends of journalism. Perhaps nowhere is this felt more strongly than in visual journalism, where fears about AI replacing cameras and associated implications are rife. These concerns resemble earlier debates about visual technologies, from the smartphone camera to social media, and intersect with fundamental debates about journalism's boundaries and norms: what news "is," how it is produced, and what we expect it to achieve. Amidst this hype and anxiety, we offer an analysis of AI's risks to visual journalism that contextualises this technology against journalism's existing tensions. Our study asks: How unique are the threats that generative AI poses to visual news? Specifically, we look across academic disciplines to interrogate three threats that are especially prevalent in the literature. Our conceptual evaluation is benefited empirically by dozens of industry perspectives spanning three continents, and allows us to identify exactly which threats, if any, that generative AI poses to visual journalism are new, and which are extant threats folded into more longstanding discourses.

ктуальність  дослідження  зумовлена  трансформацією  сучасного  медіаландшафту,  в  умовах  якої медіаконтент  дедалі  частіше  створюється,  поширюється  та  споживається  за  допомогою  цифрових онлайн-платформ. При цьому значна частина творців контенту не належить до професійної спільноти журналістів  або  традиційних  медіаінституцій.  Сучасні  дослідження  медіаспоживання  свідчать,  що смартфон остаточно утвердився як головний екран у повсякденному житті користувачів, а цифрові платформи  та  медіасервіси  стали  домінуючими  джерелами  отримання  інформації та  розважального контенту. Водночас така динаміка породжує низку ризиків, зокрема в ситуації, коли швидкість виробництва контенту вступає в суперечність із принципами професійної відповідальності медіа перед аудиторією. Цифрові  платформи,  надаючи  простір  для  різноманітних  форм  самовираження,  водночас  можуть формувати інформаційні «бульбашки», сприяти поширенню хибної інформації та дезінформації, а також посиленню теорій змови й проявів насильства. За таких умов особливої актуальності набуває питання захисту аудиторії цифрових платформ від маніпулятивних практик та інформаційних загроз.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is expanding across the globe and is now used in many industries to speed up production, boost efficiency, improve accuracy, and simplify how businesses operate. Journalism has benefited from AI as robots engage in journalistic processes, and produce results quickly in broadcast and print media types. Despite its popularity, application of AI to journalistic practice in India is scant as a consequence of various factors. This study is conceptual in nature and used qualitative methods to seek results. Expert views and opinions were used to provide information required for the study. It sought to find out challenges which can hinder successful application of AI to journalism practice in India. Media richness and technological determinism theories underpinned the study as they dealt with influence of communication technologies on production and impact on societies. AI plays a crucial role in journalism today, helping newsrooms stay competitive while also creating new opportunities for employment and innovation.

This research exercise is on the challenges of journalism practice in Nigeria (A study of Nigerian Television Authority, Enugu). The research study adopted the systems theory and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory as the theoretical framework for this study. The research population comprised 89 staff workers and the research study adopted the number as the sample size for the study. The questionnaire served as instrument of data collection. The data collected was analyzed using simple percentage method. The research work made some of the following findings; that too much of government control, shortage of staff, lack of modern /adequate equipment, poor salary, inadequate funding, and employment of non-professionals are among the major challenges affecting the media in carrying out their duties. It was recommended that journalists working in state government-owned media stations should realize that they are serving the public and not the state chief executives alone, and so must pay adequate attention to the social responsibility principle of the press.
