Haketia, a hybrid Judaeo-Spanish trans-language suppressed under imperial rule in the Maghreb, is being actively reanimated through digital heritagisation practices amongst dispersed communities of speech. How do digital heritage practices enable the postvernacular transformation of Haketia from suppressed vernacular to an active tool of cross-cultural coalition-building? Drawing on virtual ethnography of the eSefarad online platform, this study examines how such platforms operate not as static preservation but through processes of ‘trans situ’ heritagisation, where cultural elements are exchanged across multiple sites, temporalities, and modes of presence. The analysis traces Haketia’s transition to postvernacular performance, where using the language becomes a conscious cultural enactment that forges virtual communities across historical rupture. Rather than representing continuous transmission,
these digital practices are marked by inventive reconstruction and purposeful reassembly, conceptualised here as ‘open-source Sephardism’ – a framework grounded in diasporism that privileges relational ‘hereness’ over territorial return. Through collaborative negotiation and cross-cultural coalition, this digital heritage practice fosters the revival of Judaeo-Muslim virtual worldly commons, demonstrating how minoritised vernaculars can be reactivated as living threads of diasporic connection that transcend traditional boundaries of heritage preservation.

Cet article vise à présenter les facteurs de réussite du développement économique et social de la Chine. Après les réformes initiées par Deng Xiaoping en 1978, la Chine a connu l'un des taux de croissance économique les plus élevés de l'histoire moderne. Ces facteurs de réussite sont liés aux réformes économiques progressives et pragmatiques adoptées par le gouvernement chinois, à la mise en place de zones économiques spéciales (ZES), au rôle prépondérant de l'État dans la planification stratégique du payset son exécution, aux investissements massifs dans les infrastructures énergétiques, de transport et de communication, à la mise en œuvre de la réforme agraire et de la modernisation rurale, aux investissements dans l'éducation, la science et la technologie, à l'intégration de la Chine au commerce mondial, à la réduction de la pauvreté, ainsi qu'à la stabilité politique et à la continuité administrative. Malgré ces succès économiques et sociaux, le modèle de développement chinois présente encore d'importants problèmes à résoudre : 1) le ralentissement de l'économie chinoise, avec une baisse du taux de croissance du PIB depuis 2005 ; 2) une baisse du taux d'investissement depuis 2012 ; 3) les inégalités régionales ; 4) la concentration du pouvoir politique. 5) Restrictions aux libertés civiles ; 6) Vieillissement de la population ; 7) Crise du logement ; 8) Endettement de l'État, des entreprises et des ménages ; 9) Problèmes environnementaux ; et 10) Surcapacité industrielle. Pour remédier aux problèmes du ralentissement de l'économie chinoise, le gouvernement a lancé « Initiative Ceinture et Route », également connue sous le nom de Nouvelle Route de la Soie, visant à rapprocher la Chine du reste du monde grâce à des investissements et des projets d'infrastructure.

This study examines the mosaic art of Punic Carthage and its finest surviving expression at the archaeological site of Kerkouane (Cap Bon, Tunisia), a city remarkable for being the only largely unaltered Punic urban settlement known to scholarship. Drawing on the foundational work of Tunisian historian M'hamed Hassine Fantar, this paper analyses the historical development of mosaic-making from its Egyptian and Near Eastern precursors, through the four principal stylistic periods of Punic-Roman decorative art, to the sophisticated tessellated pavements of Kerkouane itself. Particular attention is devoted to the distinctive white-on-red floor decoration preserved in the domestic structures of Kerkouane and, above all, to the enigmatic figure embedded within those floors -an anthropomorphic schematic symbol interpreted by scholars as the Sign of Tanit, the supreme goddess of Carthage. The persistence and ubiquity of this sign across Punic material culture, and its unexpected survival in an in situ domestic mosaic context at Kerkouane, are analysed as evidence for the deep integration of religious symbolism into everyday Punic life. The paper argues that the Punic achievement in mosaic art was not derivative of earlier traditions but represented an original synthesis reflecting a civilization that, in the words of Professor Fantar, truly longed for art and creativity from the earliest times.

La cooperazione fra monarchie del Golfo e paesi europei continua a crescere, spinta da acute crisi regionali ed evoluzioni strategiche. Davanti a interessi e rischi sempre più convergenti, la sfida per il Consiglio di Cooperazione del Golfo (Ccg) e per l’Unione europea (UE) è ora cooperare sul piano multilaterale, costruendo linee d’azione condivise al di là delle intese bilaterali. In questo senso, la guerra all’Iran può rappresentare un tornante strategico per la cooperazione Ccg-UE, soprattutto in tema di sicurezza e difesa, relativamente a: sicurezza marittima, difesa aerea, lotta al terrorismo, protezione delle infrastrutture energetiche e digitali, industria della difesa. Nella consapevolezza che la guerra all’Iran e la conseguente destabilizzazione della regione del Golfo hanno enfatizzato l’esistenza di posizioni politiche sfumate tra le monarchie dell’area. C’è un obiettivo, però, condiviso da tutte: cooperare di più con l’Europa.

Against the backdrop of an international order with an uncertain future and outline, but also of a very probable generalised instability in a large part of the Global South, Europe and Africa are in the process of reconfiguring their relations. This is a process that will take time, given the long history of relations between continents and the imprint of historically constructed hierarchies and inequalities, and it is a necessary one precisely to overcome that legacy. This new issue of the Africa Report, through its eight chapters, addresses different central issues in these relations: from global challenges such as the fight against climate change, healthcare and economic relations to political challenges faced by different countries and regions to resolve the conflicts that traverse them and consolidate processes that will contribute to the well-being of the overall population. The contributions of the nine authors participating in the report also highlight how inequalities continue to mark the links between the two continents, with several of them also focusing specifically on the Sahel region.

Dans son essai, The Invention of the Maghreb: Between Africa and the Middle East, paru en 2021, Abdelmajid Hannoum, professeur d'anthropologie de l'université du Kansas, offre au lecteur une réflexion approfondie sur l'histoire et l'identité de cette partie de l'Afrique du Nord, à contrecourant des travaux sur le sujet.
L’auteur analyse de manière minutieuse le développement de cette marque (concept?) représentant cette partie de l’Afrique, qui apparait aujourd’hui comme une entité bien définie à l’identité marquée, si
évidente qu’elle est très peu interrogée.
La principale idée que l’auteur s’attache à creuser dans son essai est que ce terme est d’invention coloniale et que par-là même, son existence conceptuelle a servi les ambitions hégémoniques françaises, ambitions dans lesquelles nous sommes toujours empêtrées.

La recuperación de Orán, por la Monarquía Borbónica, en 1732 ha sido tradicionalmente interpretada como un episodio de carácter militar, vinculado a la política mediterránea de Felipe V. Sin embargo, más allá de la conquista, la reincorporación del enclave, a la Monarquía Hispánica, supuso la reactivación de una ciudad fortificada, cuya organización espacial y configuración arquitectónica respondieron a una concepción espacial compleja, en la que defensa, administración y representación del poder, se encontraban estrechamente vinculadas. El presente estudio, se centra en el análisis de la organización interna del espacio urbano de Orán, y en la manera en que determinados elementos arquitectónicos y urbanos, funcionaron como instrumentos de representación de la soberanía borbónica. A partir del estudio de cartografía histórica, planos militares y documentación complementaria, se examinan las murallas, los sistemas defensivos, la jerarquización del espacio urbano, así como la función simbólica de estructuras como la Puerta de España o la Plaza Mayor. Se plantea que Orán no debe entenderse únicamente como una plaza militar, sino como una ciudad de frontera, donde el entorno urbano construido actuó como un medio eficaz de control, ordenación y visualización del poder, en el contexto de la Edad Moderna.

Ce second article traite de la construction nationale par les États africains.  Premiere parti a apparu le 5.5. 2026 titré:
Face à l'éternelle marginalisation des États africains Les défis de la construction nationale dans les pays d'Afrique. 
Après leur indépendance dans les années 1960, ils ont fait face à des problèmes causés par des frontières imposées arbitrairement. Depuis l'indépendance, les États africains ont de plus en plus reconnu le rôle vital de l'État dans la promotion des intérêts et du bien-être de tous les citoyens, quelle que soit leur appartenance ethnique. La souveraineté bien qu'elle soit façonnée par des frontières coloniales arbitraires-reste une condition préalable au développement et à la répartition équitable des ressources. Lors de l'indépendance dans les années 1960, les pays africains ont fait face à deux défis principaux : assurer la souveraineté et la paix, et favoriser le développement afin d'améliorer le bien-être des citoyens. Pour atteindre ces objectifs, il a fallu construire un sens commun des valeurs qui transcende les divisions ethniques. Cependant, l'intégration politique s'est révélée difficile à atteindre, et la plupart des pays africains sont encore confrontés à ces défis aujourd'hui. Cet article explore les raisons de cette impasse continue, en commençant par la définition des concepts clés. Cet article s'appuie sur les théories de l'identité individuelle, qui mettent l'accent sur l'influence formative des expériences vécues au début de la vie. Dans de nombreuses cultures africaines, la cohabitation prolongée avec les parents et les liens ancestraux forts façonnent profondément l'identité individuelle. La formation de l'identité est un processus hautement émotionnel, influencé par la génétique, la famille, l'ethnicité, l'environnement social, la langue, la religion et le contexte politique plus large. L'État et la communauté locale cherchent tous deux à favoriser la loyauté, mais ce qui prévaut a des implications significatives pour la construction nationale.

This paper questions the prevailing population-genetics assumption that Haplogroup E-M2 is best understood as an exclusively West African lineage tied to the mid-to-late Holocene Bantu Expansion. By examining the deep-time phylogenetic structure of the parent node E-V38 alongside high-resolution genomic data from sample YF137758, this study argues that the foundational roots of the macro-lineage are more consistent with Northeast Africa and the Levantine Corridor than with a West African point of origin. Using high-coverage Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) data, we present a basal, parallel clade-E-Y229511-whose verified position on the tree is difficult to reconcile with a simple West African origin model. To account for the modern concentration of E-M2 in sub-Saharan Africa, we propose and invite testing of a hypothesis we term Relict Asymmetry: that the E-Y229511 line reflects a low-density relict branch retained near the lineage's older geographic range, while sister branches underwent profound demographic expansion elsewhere. This paper is offered as a data-grounded reason to investigate E-M2's deep structure further, not as a final verdict on its origin.

Furthermore, it reinforces Morocco's standing as a world leader in creative, tolerant, and innovative culture, which increases its impact and notoriety abroad.

This article examines the history and origins of the surnames of the grâna community of Tunis, founded in the 17th century by Jews who came mainly from Livorno. Building on the research of Paul Sebag, it offers a refined analysis based on recent genealogical, historical, and linguistic sources. Three main groups of names emerge: Iberian names (about half), inherited from former Portuguese or Spanish Marranos; Italian names (about one third), originating from Roman, Italianized Ashkenazi migrants or Provençal families; and Maghreb names (15%). The onomastics of the grâna thus reflect the diversity of Mediterranean Jewish trajectories and the evolution of migration between the 17th and 20th centuries.

12 mars 1950, Simone de Beauvoir et Jean-Paul Sartre arrivent à Alger. Ce n’est pas la première fois qu’ils posent pied sur la terre algérienne. Deux ans plus tôt, ils y avaient déjà effectué un séjour d’un mois et demi. Mais, cette fois-ci, c’est un tout autre projet qu’ils ont conçu. Il s’agit pour eux de rejoindre par voie de terre l’Afrique sahélienne et ainsi d’effectuer ce qu’il est convenu d’appeler une transsaharienne. C’est là une idée que Beauvoir avait depuis quelques années. Elle avait déjà effectué trois voyages en Algérie et elle était tombée sous le charme du désert. C’est l’histoire de ces périples et notamment de cette transsaharienne peu commentée voire ignorée par les biographies de Beauvoir et Sartre qui est le sujet de cet article

El motivo de este trabajo es la creación de un relato relacionado con el título que nos ocupa, desde sus orígenes, antecedentes y desarrollo hasta el resultado y consecuencias del mismo, dando un repaso lo suficientemente descriptivo de todo lo relacionado con los hechos que nos permita tener una perspectiva medianamente clara para entender las conclusiones destinadas a resolver las incógnitas que  aún quedan sin descifrar. Concretamente, sobre los itinerarios, tanto de ida como de retirada, seguidos por el ejército califal; y la ubicación de Tablada, Castrobón y al-Jandaq, el barranco, donde sufrieron el “desastre”, más que derrota, denominada de Alhándega.

Dans un article précédent, nous avons pu démontrer de manière factuelle que l'Algérie précoloniale, en tant qu'État, n'est pas une vue de l'esprit. De très nombreux auteurs européens ont mentionné le territoire de l'Algérie actuelle dans leurs écrits sans ambiguïté. Mais qu'en est-il de la population de cette Algérie pré-1830 ? Il est important, également, d'en finir avec un énième mensonge répété de la part des sophistes anti-algériens ; les « Algériens » mentionnés dans les écrits anciens ne désigneraient pas… les Algériens. En effet, certaines personnes ont la mauvaise idée, lorsque nous leur présentons des preuves que les mots « Algérien » et « Algériens » existaient plusieurs siècles avant la colonisation française de l'Algérie, de rétorquer que ces appellations ne désignaient, non pas la population de la régence (ou du Royaume, comme nous l'avons longuement démontré) d'Alger, mais uniquement les gouverneurs de l'État algérien précolonial. Nous allons donc mettre un terme de façon définitive à cette ineptie, et démontrer, preuves à l'appui, que les termes « Algérien » et « Algériens » existaient et étaient bien utilisés pour désigner les habitants du royaume d'Alger (en plus de désigner les gouverneurs, naturellement). Nous allons, pour cela, procéder de la même manière que nous l'avons fait dans le chapitre précédent ; étudier la littérature européenne. Pour accomplir cette tâche, nous nous retrouvons face à un problème de richesse, puisqu'il existe de très nombreuses sources européennes mentionnant la population et les gouverneurs d'Algérie avec le terme « Algériens », sous ses différentes translittérations ; celles-ci se comptant par plusieurs centaines, voire, par milliers, il nous faudra donc être très sélectifs et non exhaustifs.

This study examines the historical validity of the ethnonym “Amazigh” and its alleged continuity with ancient and medieval North African ethnonyms such as Maxyes, Mazices, Mazaces, and related terms found in Greek, Latin, and Arabic sources. Through a critical philological and historiographical analysis of classical authors (Herodotus, Ptolemy, Ammianus Marcellinus, Corippus) as well as medieval Arabic and early modern European texts (Ibn Khaldun, Leo Africanus, Marmol Carvajal, Pufendorf, and others), this research investigates whether the term “Amazigh” functioned as a stable autoethnonym across time.

The findings highlight a consistent absence of the term “Amazigh” (and its plural Imazighen) in ancient and medieval textual corpora, despite the extensive documentation of North African populations under alternative ethnonyms such as Libyens, Mauri, Gétules, Barbar, Sanhaja, and Zenata. The study further demonstrates that terms such as Mazices and Maxyes are used in a localized and non-generic manner in classical sources, undermining claims of a continuous ethnolinguistic equivalence with the modern construct “Amazigh.”

By applying a methodological framework grounded in historical linguistics, source criticism, and the concept of heuristic anachronism, this work argues that the retroactive projection of the modern ethnonym “Amazigh” onto antiquity reflects a process of identity reconstruction rather than historical continuity. It also situates the emergence of “Amazigh” as a generalized identity label within modern intellectual and political reconfigurations of North African historiography.

Ultimately, this study calls for a renewed critical approach to ethnonymic continuity in North African history, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between historical attestations and modern identity formations.

This excerpt analyzes the account of Leo Africanus (Description of Africa, 1525–1530) concerning the demographic structure of North Africa in the early modern period, with particular attention to Arab populations and their genealogical classifications. The text highlights two historical layers: first, the early Arab-Muslim incursions (Futūḥāt) under the early caliphate, associated with military expeditions led by figures such as ʿUqba ibn Nāfiʿ; and second, the later so-called “Hilalian migrations,” described as large-scale movements of Arab tribal groups into the Maghreb.

Leo Africanus presents a structured typology of Arab populations in North Africa, distinguishing three major confederations: Chachin, Hilal, and Maqil, each further subdivided into multiple tribal lineages and sub-lineages. This genealogical fragmentation reflects both an attempt at ethnographic classification and the intellectual frameworks of early modern historiography. The passage also emphasizes the magnitude of migration, including warriors, families, and livestock, thereby suggesting a demographic transformation of the region through Arab settlement and assimilation into local African populations.

From a historiographical perspective, this account is significant as it was later used as a reference by early modern historians such as Luis Mármol de Carvajal, contributing to the construction of North African demographic narratives in both European and colonial scholarship.

This paper examines the development of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) in the United States between 1950 and 1990, a period marked by significant social, political, and cultural transformations. The study focuses on AAVE as a systematic linguistic variety with its own phonological, grammatical, and lexical structures, rather than a non-standard or “incorrect” form of English.

The research explores key sociolinguistic processes such as code-switching, linguistic divergence, and language ideology, highlighting how they contributed to the perception and evolution of AAVE in American society. Special attention is given to the impact of the Civil Rights Movement, the Ann Arbor court case (1979), and the Ebonics controversy (1996), which played an important role in the academic and institutional recognition of AAVE.

Additionally, the paper analyzes the influence of AAVE on contemporary culture, particularly through hip-hop music and digital media, as well as ongoing issues of linguistic discrimination and cultural appropriation.

This research contributes to the field of sociolinguistics by emphasizing linguistic diversity and the importance of recognizing non-standard language varieties as rule-governed systems. The paper was originally written in Ukrainian and reflects the academic interests of Ukrainian students in global linguistic phenomena and cultural identity.

One major problem for dating the origin and dispersal of language phyla, or indeed their individual branches, is that they do not diversify at a standard rate. Once the great hope for dating language families, and regularly invented with ‘new’ mathematical methods and improved algorithms, glottochronology continues to fail to convince all but small circles of acolytes. The development and expansion of individual phyla and families seems more like punctuated equilibrium, periods of near static followed by bursts of either extinction or rapid diversification. This is better explained by episodes of socio-political change, for example the establishment of a centralised polity, or alternatively the collapse of such systems due to warfare, epidemics or natural disaster. In some cases this can be detected in the historical, archaeological or genetic record, but in other examples, the linguistic facts require a hypothesis to explain such change. Importantly, this cannot be ascribed to exclusively linguistic factors. External developments, such as technology advances, epidemic disease, or military conquest will need to be invoked and can often be determined from the historical or archaeological record.

I propose to name this procedure palaeosociolinguistics, the application of sociolinguistic principles to past scenarios of language diversification and change. The paper discusses four areas where there is an interface between the claims of historical linguistics and sociological processes.

 Language levelling
 Borrowing between closely related languages
 Negative reconstruction and subsistence changes
 Creoles and other types of language mixing

Examples used to illustrate these are drawn from the dispersal of Afroasiatic, the contrast between expected and actual diversity on Madagascar, and language mixing in Southern African languages.

The main languages in the central Sahara today are Berber [(T)Amazigh] represented by Tuareg and some residual outliers, and Arabic, principally Hassānīya Arabic (حسانية)‎, the language of the Moors, a conservative Arabic dialect originally spoken by the Beni Hassān. However, this is likely to be a relatively recent state of affairs, as Berber has spread in the last few thousand years, yet the Sahara has been crossed by humans for more than 200,000 years. Prior to the Berber, there were certainly foragers and possibly other pastoralists of unknown affiliation. Berber languages are all remarkably similar to one another, possibly due to a levelling event connected with the establishment of the Roman limes. As the Berber expanded, they would have encountered foragers and the animals they hunted. As many of these would have been only marginally familiar, it is plausible the incomers took over the names from foragers. And indeed many animal names are unusual and not common Berber. The paper presents lists of animal names in Southern Berber lects, some of which are difficult to etymologise and considers their possible sources as well as exploring the substrate hypothesis. Some of them are clearly linked to one another, possibly indicating a circulation of zoonyms among hunting populations.

This study examines the epistemological concept of kashf (unveiling) in the Akbarian school through the commentary of Dāwūd al-Qayṣarī (d. 751/1350), one of the most influential early commentators on Ibn ʿArabī's (d. 638/1240) Fuṣūṣ al-Ḥikam. As a central transmitter of Akbarian metaphysics rooted in the madrasa milieu of early Ottoman Anatolia, Qayṣarī occupies a pivotal position in the systematization and consolidation of the school.

L'année en cours 2026 et celles à venir confirment un regain d'intérêt remarquable pour la figure de Saint Augustin d'Hippone, penseur majeur de l'Antiquité tardive, dont l'héritage continue d'irriguer les débats intellectuels, historiques et spirituels des deux rives de la Méditerranée. L'alimentation en Asie - Jeudi 21 et vendredi 22 mai 2026.

L’alimentation est un marqueur fort des civilisations et particulièrement des civilisations
de l’Asie. Les sources permettant d’aborder le sujet sont multiples : images, textes et données de
l’archéologie. Chacune de ces sources apporte des données originales depuis les représentations
de banquets jusqu’aux traités d’agronomie, de cuisine, voire de médecine. Les nouvelles approches
archéologiques, notamment l’archéozoologie et la carpologie, ont également permis de fournir
quantité de données nouvelles sur les espèces consommées et sur le mode de consommation dans
différents cadres et différents milieux.
Les évolutions des pratiques alimentaires sont, dans ce colloque, étudiées sur le temps
long, mais aussi dans les moments de rupture. Comment les peuples conquérants diffusèrent-ils
leurs habitudes alimentaires aux peuples vaincus et inversement ? À quel rythme les interdits
alimentaires à caractère religieux s’imposeraient-ils dans les sociétés asiatiques et quelles furent
les résistances ?
Le sujet est aussi abordé à différentes échelles : échelle sociale depuis la table des princes
jusqu’à celle de leurs sujets, échelle temporelle en examinant les facteurs ayant favorisé les
évolutions alimentaires (climat, introduction de nouvelles espèces, etc.), échelle spatiale enfin en
abordant la question des aires d’approvisionnement depuis l’espace local jusqu’aux espaces plus
lointains avec notamment le commerce des épices.
Les interactions entre les différentes régions de l’Asie ainsi que les influences et les modes
alimentaires permettront de dresser un panorama global de cette vaste question depuis le Maghreb
jusqu’au Japon.

The Algerian Green Barrier, mainly composed of native and artificial Aleppo pine 35 forests, spreads along the presaharian steppes and is threatened by anthropogenic and 36 natural disturbances, including climate change. We hypothesized that the 37 ecophysiological functioning of this conifer has been substantially modified in reaction 38 to recent warming and drought much beyond the expected effect of CO2 fertilization. 39 Our aim was to characterize the long-term performance (1925-2013) of native Aleppo 40 pines thriving at their southernmost distribution. We used tree-ring width (TRW) and 41 carbon isotope discrimination (Δ 13 C) to characterize basal area increment (BAI) and 42 water-use efficiency (WUEi) at three sites. BAI remained stable or slightly increased 43 over time, with mean values ranging between 4.0 and 6.3 cm 2 year -1 . Conversely, site-44  13 C decreased from -0.022 to -0.014 ‰ year -1 along time, which translated into WUEi 45 increases of ca. 39%. This strong physiological reaction indicates that pines are 46 responding simultaneously to rising CO2 and drier conditions, inducing a progressively 47 tighter stomatal control of water losses. However, WUEi increments were essentially 48 unrelated to BAI and did not affect carbon reserves, which suggests a high resilience to 49 climate change. This finding could be due to shifts in growing season towards earlier 50 months in winter-spring, as suggested by temporal changes in climate factors 51 underlying Δ 13 C and TRW. Our study highlights the substantial plasticity of Aleppo 52 pine, but this species is unlikely to follow a similar pace of ecophysiological 53 adjustments according to unprecedented low  13 C records and lack of WUEi 54 stimulation observed from 2000 onwards.

This study examines the theological debates surrounding the Ibāḍī epistle of Khalaf b. Ziyād al-Baḥrānī, written in the early 2nd/8th century. The epistle, which focuses on the theological concept of al-asmāʾ wa-l-aḥkām (names and rulings), represents one of the earliest known discussions of faith classifications and their legal implications in Islam. Khalaf's work is compared to Kitāb al-Irjāʾ and the Epistle of Sālim ibn Dhakwān, highlighting how early Islamic sects, particularly the Ibāḍīs, Murjiʾites, and Muʿtazilites, debated the definitions of īmān (faith) and kufr (unbelief). The study situates Khalaf's epistle within the broader theological discourse of the period, showing how his classification of faith-related rulings influenced later Ibāḍī thought. It also challenges the assumption that Ibāḍism only matured as a structured doctrine in the 6th/12th century, demonstrating its continuous evolution from the early Islamic period.

La transformación de la ciudad antigua entre el 400 y el 800 es el tema principal del proyecto ATLAS en las últimas «fases formativas» del mundo urbano clásico: la de la Antigüedad tardía (finales del siglo v–mediados del siglo VI), cuando los cambios políticos y estructurales suponen un rediseño urbano o una nueva concepción de ciudad, y la propiamente altomedieval (ss. VIIy VIII), momento en el que la conquista árabe-islámica y el consecutivo proceso de islamización cristalizaron en un nuevo modelo urbano con el que confrontar la ciudad tardoantigua. El objeto de la presente aportación es precisamente esta última fase formativa del hecho urbano, epígono de la Long Late Antiquity, que se enmarca en una larga discusión sobre la continuidad del urbanismo romano tardío y el papel innovador del proceso urbano islámico. El debate sobre la vida urbana entre los siglos vii y viii y la génesis de la ciudad islámica es un tema crucial en la investigación europea y mediterránea reciente, donde se aprecia la centralidad de la arqueología, aunque se ha abordado desde diversas perspectivas y tradiciones historiográficas influidas por el origen cultural, geográfico y académico de los intervinientes (arqueología versus historia).

Écrits berbères en fragments by Mohand Saïd Lechani Reviewed by Walid Bouchakour Trinity College Mohand Saïd Lechani, Écrits berbères en fragments. Édition bilingue français-kabyle, Méziane Lechani & Kamal Naït Zerad (éds), Geuthner, Paris, 2024, 248 pp. For lack of a better chronology, Mohand Saïd Lechani (1893-1985) is often classified in the prestigious yet vague category of "precursors" of Berber Studies and activism in Algeria. However, reading his writings collected in Écrits berbères en fragments, we realize that his trajectory and productions spanned the century. His multiple interventions chart the evolution of Amazighness as formulated from Algeria. Lechani would be well placed among the Indigenous intellectuals in contact with colonial ethnography as well as counted among the great postcolonial Berber Studies scholars. In effect, he was a student of Saïd Boulifa at the École Normale Supérieure in Algiers under French rule and transmitted his work in linguistics and pedagogy to Mouloud Mammeri, contributing to the activities of the CRAPE (the Anthropological, Prehistoric, and Ethnographic Research Center) in postcolonial Algeria. His career's trajectory outlines the awakening of a decolonial consciousness, expressed from within an indigenous experience and culture. The collection of texts edited and annotated by his grandson Méziane Lechani, recently published by Geuthner, offers important insights into the Algerian Amazigh Movement-called the Berberist movement-and its historical evolution, across both very specific Kabyle questions and potential transnational connections. Méziane Lechani's preface provides an excellent biographical overview, informed, precise and instilled with filial admiration, showing how Mohand Saïd Lechani assumed the dual mission of teacher and activist. Sharing an experience common to many Amazigh intellectuals, the systemic injustices suffered by his people under colonialism, later the marginalization of Amazigh identity in postcolonial nation-states, pushed him to become an activist in spite of himself. As a teacher, Lechani's career started in 1912 and was marked by his criticism of segregation of the French colonial education system. This job and the repercussions of two world wars forced him to travel several times-opportunities he used to broaden his knowledge of different Amazighspeaking regions in Algeria as well as in Morocco, where he studied the Ntifa dialect. Inspired by his first stay in Morocco in 1920, he authored an interdialectal lexicon comparing Kabyle words (from his native region of Irjen) with words in Moroccan Tamazight, which is reproduced in the appendix to Écrits berbères. His "Considérations et commentaires à propos du sens et la morphologie des mots dans le parler des Irjen," based on his intimate knowledge of the Kabylia region, also benefited from his ability to travel transnationally. This text includes specific examples of obscure expressions that gain meaning via transregional comparison of dialects. Mohand Saïd Lechani could be said to have formulated his views on the Amazighness of the Maghreb in a straightforward and consistent manner very early. The collection opens with a Walid Bouchakour

Regionalism is increasingly recognized as an effective framework for addressing contemporary challenges in the international system, as it fosters cooperation and cohesion among countries within a region or sub-region. Expectations for integration are particularly high when countries share common geographical, religious, socio-cultural, and linguistic characteristics. North Africa exemplifies such a region. Motivated by the belief in regional unity, the Heads of State of Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, and Tunisia established the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) in 1989, with objectives including fostering friendly relations, ensuring free mobility of people, and creating a common market. However, more than three decades after its formation, North Africa has yet to achieve significant integration, ranking low in terms of regional economic cooperation. This study employs a qualitative approach, relying primarily on secondary sources such as books, journals, newspaper articles, and conference papers to analyze the factors hindering AMU's progress toward the vision of its founders. The findings indicate that North African countries maintain higher trade volumes with Europe than with each other, while some nations increasingly focus on sub-Saharan Africa. The study concludes with recommendations, including resolving the Western Sahara issue to enable free movement of people and goods between Algeria, Morocco, and other member states, and enhancing regional security through timely information sharing to attract direct foreign investment.

As in all periods during which Jerusalem was under Islamic rule, following its incorporation into the Ottoman Empire in the sixteenth century, al-Masjid al-Aqṣā functioned not only as a place of worship but also as a central repository of the city’s scholarly and cultural memory. When the Ottomans annexed Jerusalem in late 1516, they largely preserved the well-established scholarly structures inherited from the Mamluk period and gradually integrated them into their own administrative and institutional framework. One of the most tangible manifestations of this institutional memory was the teaching circles (ḥalaqāt) held in mosques and masjids, which were open to all segments of society and were known in the regions of Syria and Egypt as tasdīr.
These teaching circles, in which various Islamic disciplines—such as Qurʾānic recitation (qirāʾāt), Qurʾānic exegesis (tafsīr), ḥadīth, jurisprudence (fiqh), Arabic grammar (naḥw), and rhetoric (balāgha)—were taught, constituted a key mechanism for the intergenerational transmission of knowledge and the preservation of Jerusalem’s scholarly memory. The scholars who taught in these circles at al-Masjid al-Aqṣā, referred to in the sharīʿa court records as mutaṣaddir, carried out their duties in the sixteenth century on the basis of imperial decrees (berāts) issued directly from Istanbul.
A significant number of these scholars were simultaneously affiliated with other religious institutions located in and around al-Ḥaram al-Sharīf, such as madrasas and zāwiyas. Moreover, the mutaṣaddirs were among the members of the learned class who received allocations from the imperial surre revenues sent from Istanbul to Jerusalem. This circumstance suggests that the tasdīr position was not only of scholarly significance for the Jerusalemite ʿulamāʾ but also served as an indicator of the social prestige derived from their direct relationship with the central Ottoman administration.
This paper examines the tasdīr circles at al-Masjid al-Aqṣā and the scholars who taught in them during the sixteenth century, drawing primarily on the Jerusalem Sharīʿa Court Records, surre registers, and biographical sources. In addition to their instructional roles, the study addresses the other offices (manṣibs) held by these scholars, their familial affiliations, and the stipends they received in return for their services. By doing so, the paper aims to shed light on the institutional and scholarly dimensions of tasdīr as a key component of Jerusalem’s intellectual life in the early Ottoman period and to contribute to a deeper understanding of the relationship between learned authority, sacred space, and imperial governance in Ottoman Jerusalem.

This paper examines the role of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) within the intangible economy, emphasizing its economic potential and significance in preserving traditional knowledge. Through case studies focusing on Moroccan gastronomy, handicrafts, and the digitization of cultural practices, it demonstrates how ICH can be leveraged to generate income, strengthen cultural identity, and create employment opportunities. However, the valorization of ICH presents challenges, including the risk of excessive commodification and the potential loss of authenticity. Research is critical in documenting, innovating, and evaluating the economic and social impacts of ICH. Collaborative efforts among researchers, public institutions, businesses, and local communities are vital for fostering sustainable development. Lastly, the paper proposes recommendations for enhancing public policies, promoting research initiatives, and integrating ICH into the economy ethically and respectfully, while also offering perspectives on assessing its longterm impact.

L'objectif de cet ouvrage collectif est de questionner, à partir des études empiriques, la nature et le degré de violence dans l’esclavage endogène africain entre le XVe et le XXe siècle.

Morocco looks different from other North African entities not only for its sense of unity (116) but its consistent through-narrative in history, geographic reach, and even empire (see also "Review of Maya Shatzmiller. 2019. From Berber State to Moroccan Empire: The Glory of Fez Under the Marinids," ASQ 20.1, January 2021). It is an entity which in various ages extended its reach east along the African coast, under Hasan II (reigned 1961-1999) refused to recognize Mauritania as an independent country until 1969, and in 1975 even marched into the Spanish Sahara-which it still holds. Rejecting "area studies" framings (219), Hibou and Tozy analyze interactions of "nation state" and "imperial register" imperatives in contemporary Morocco.

Résumé
Les Normes sont des outils pratiques qui fournissent aux spécialistes et aux décideurs les informations nécessaires pour relever les défis actuels, grâce à des cadres méthodologiques spécifiquement conçus pour répondre aux besoins institutionnels spécifiques de divers secteurs économiques, sociaux et environnementaux.
Une norme ou une spécification est un document officiel dans chaque pays, certifié par un organisme agréé, élaboré à partir de données scientifiques, de technologies et d'expertise documentées, et visant à générer des avantages socio-économiques.
Une fois là où les normes requises pour chaque secteur ou activité identifiées, les premières étapes peuvent être franchies pour les mettre en œuvre et bénéficier des avantages de la normalisation nationale.
Actuellement, le monde développé assiste à une évolution vers un processus de normalisation partagé intégrant des normes alternatives et des cadres d'évaluation plus systématiques et rigoureux, s'éloignant ainsi d'un processus de normalisation descendant, guidé par les souhaits des dirigeants et des décideurs des administrations ou organisations et des entreprises.
L'accent est mis sur la conception de normes internationales et nationales adaptées aux défis contemporains, tout en tenant compte des spécificités culturelles et nationales et des impératifs mondiaux.
Les pays du Printemps Arabe n'ont pas connu la réalité de l'application des normes, car les normes régulent le travail, définissent ses fondements, gèrent ses étapes, contrôlent la mise en œuvre de ses procédures, clarifient ses résultats et évaluent ainsi sa réussite.
Dans les pays du Printemps Arabe, avant son déclenchement en 2011, aucune application, concrète, des Normes (économiques, sociales, environnementales, politiques, éducatives, productives, etc.) n'avait été réellement observée. Sans elles, les révolutions populaires qui ont ébranlé et bouleversé les fondements et les gouvernements de ces pays n'auraient pas été nécessaires. Ces révolutions se sont ensuite transformées en conflits sanglants, surtout, en (Syrie, Lybie, Yémen), qui ont coûté la vie à des millions de personnes, entraînant des morts, des blessés et des handicaps, et ont provoqué le déplacement et la réinstallation de dizaines de millions de personnes dans d'autres pays du monde. Elles ont également provoqué des ravages considérables dans divers secteurs de production, ainsi que la destruction d'infrastructures, de bâtiments et d'autres biens. L'absence d'application concrète des normes, pourtant existantes, a été l'un des facteurs déclencheurs du Printemps Arabe.
Les résultats de ces révolutions du printemps Arabe ( comme se sont reconnues , décrites et nommées partout dans le champs des médias / politiques / universitaires et populaires) ont été variés : des révolutions parfaitement réussies qui ont complètement éliminé un gang au pouvoir criminel, sectaire et mafieux, comme dans le cas de la Syrie et de la famille Assad ; des changements de régime tout en préservant les mêmes structures politiques, militaires et socio-économiques par une contre-révolution, comme dans le cas de la Tunisie et de l'Égypte ; et des révolutions ratées qui ont abouti à la désintégration de pays et au partage de leurs terres et de leurs richesses par des forces militaires de facto soutenues par des puissances extérieures, chaque camp combattant l'autre, comme dans le cas de la Libye et du Yémen.
Commencer à fournir des normes et œuvrer à leur mise en œuvre (d’une façon réelle et pas seulement formelle) dans les pays du Printemps Arabe, comme la Syrie, la Libye et le Yémen, contribuerait à placer ces pays sur la voie de la stabilité politique, puis du développement national global et, enfin, de l'intégration au monde extérieur et à ses normes.
Cette contribution utilise une méthodologie d'analyse documentaire et comparative, afin de garantir la validité et la fiabilité du travail, de ses étapes et de ses résultats, elle s'appuie sur les méthodologies et les travaux scientifiques issus de (La chaire Mutations et Agilités), en étudiant les transformations économiques, sociales et technologiques qui affectent les pays et les institutions, explorant les défis de la résilience organisationnelle, de la gouvernance adaptative et de l'innovation administrative face aux changements contemporains.
Les résultats escomptés de cette contribution tentent de comprendre la réalité des normes disponibles ou proposées pour les pays du Printemps Arabe après les révolutions des quinze dernières années, avec leurs conséquences positives et négatives, et vise également à établir,  ( si possible), des normes scientifiques et méthodologiques applicables à ces pays, à les faire passer ,(au cas à l’existent des dirigeants compétents et honnêtes ) d’un état de chaos à un état de stabilité et à construire un État de droit, de citoyenneté et de développement.
