Male Interpersonal Violence

Studies on violence primarily focus on domestic violence and physical violence against women. However, emotional or psychological violence seems to be overlooked. The aim of this study is to reveal whether the gender (female/male) and appearance (safe/unsafe) of the perpetrator and psychological violence behaviors (humiliation/blocking) influence psychological violence awareness and moral disengagement among university students. It was expected that unsafe appearance, male perpetrator, and humiliating psychological violence scenario would increase the awareness of psychological violence and moral disengagement. This is because the mentioned variables were expected to increase the salience and justification of violence. At first, the visual depiction of perpetrator was created through a pilot study. The presented image was electronically altered to obtain different gender and appearance conditions. Also, the vignette also had two different conditions involving humiliation or blocking. Data were collected face to face from 121 university students in 2x2x2 between-subjects experimental design. The dependent variables were psychological violence awareness and moral disengagement scores. The results showed that the main hypotheses were rejected. The gender and appearance of the perpetrator do not affect the awareness of psychological violence. However, it observed that blocking, which is a type of psychological violence, less noticeable than humiliation. The most striking result of the study was that moral disengagement was not affected significantly by any of the variables. The research findings are discussed in the light of the previous studies and social context.

Bu çalışmanın amacı Ahlâkî Uzaklaşma Ölçeği'nin (Moral Disengagement Scale) Türkçe uyarlamasını yapmak ve psikometrik özelliklerini incelemektir. Bu amaçla Bandura ve arkadaşları (1996) tarafından geliştirilen ölçek, 285 üniversite öğrencisine (194 kadın, 91 erkek) uygulanmıştır. Ölçeğin yapı geçerliğinin belirlenmesi amacıyla doğrulayıcı faktör analizi yapılmıştır. Ölçeğin güvenirliği, Cronbach alfa katsayısı ve iki-yarım güvenirliği ile hesaplanmıştır. Ölçeğin Türkçe formunun orijinal ölçek gibi 310 Yrd.Doç.Dr.Meral YALÇIN/Öğr.Gr.Yasin ŞENYURT/Arş.Gr.Bedirhan GÜLTEPE/Prof.Dr.Hamit COŞKUN tek faktörlü bir yapıya sahip olduğu ve uyum göstergelerinin yeterli düzeyde olduğu bulunmuştur. Ölçeğin Cronbach Alpha katsayısı .86 ve iki-yarım güvenirliği .78'dir. Ölçeğin ayrılık geçerliğini sınamak için sosyal beğenirlik ölçeği, ölçüt geçerliğini test etmek için ise saldırganlık ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Ahlâkî Uzaklaşma Ölçeği'nin, saldırganlıkla orta düzeyde ilişkili olduğu (r=.33) ancak sosyal beğenirlikle anlamlı ölçüde ilişkili olmadığı (r=.03) bulunmuştur. Ölçeğin psikometrik özelliklerinin yeterli düzeyde olduğu değerlendirilmiştir.

This study examines predisposing and situational risk factors for youthful violence, and attempted to differentiate between assaultive encounters involving juvenile offenders that result in the death of a victim (i.e. homicide) and those that do not (i.e. aggravated assault). The analysis is based on a secondary analysis of quantitative data relating to background and crime characteristics for young males who were adjudicated for homicide or aggravated assault in New York State between 1995 and 1996 – the most recent epidemic period of juvenile lethality in the United States. The data were evaluated methodically by use descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, measures of central tendencies, and chi-squared tests to examine the relationship between predisposing and situational risk factors and type of offense. Finally, logistic regression analyses were used to examine predictive factors in relation to lethal intent and death from

Bu tür suçların ardında mağdura yönelik şiddetli bir önyargı bulunduğu ve mağdurun cinsiyet kimliğinin de şiddeti meşrulaştırıcı bir rolü olduğu düşünülerek bu deneysel çalışma tasarlanmıştır. Çalışmada, farazi bir şiddet senaryosunda cinsel birliktelik teklifini reddettiği için silahla vurulan bar şarkıcısı bir kadın konu edilmiş ve bu kadının cinsiyet kimliğinin (trans olan veya olmayan bir kadın), kendisine yönelik tutumlara (mağduru suçlama, cinselleştirme ve önyargı) olan etkisi araştırılmıştır. Aynı zamanda, mağdura yönelik ve daha spesifik olan tutumların, genel anlamdaki ve toplumsal cinsiyetçi-transfobik tutumlarla (transphobia/genderism) ilişkisi de incelenmiştir. This research on public drinking-related conflict and violence has studied the views and experience of security officers and young male drinkers in the Newcastle/Hunter areas of New South Wales, Australia. These participants were recruited non-randomly into different focus groups, and information was generated to allow a fuller depth of understanding of drinking violence from a social actor perspective. Results suggest that despite evidence of ongoing “binge drinking” most young men are seriously concerned about their own safety when they are at or near drinking venues and they take measures to avoid trouble and protect themselves during this leisure activity. These drinkers also hold contradictory views about venue security.  Material from these focus groups suggests that the link between drinking, violence and masculinity shapes the pattern of many conflicts. This can be understood by both drinkers and security in a way that naturalises male violence, denies personal agency and leads to undue pessimism about measures to create safer drinking environments. The link with masculinity is dynamic and varies according to the different types of individual and collectively generated “masculinities” that predominate in different social contexts, especially those involving various perceptions about social honour and whether or not to respond to public insults.

This article presents original qualitative data gathered during prolonged ethnographic fieldwork with violent men in deindustrialised communities in the north of England. The data are used as an empirical platform for a theoretical exploration of the symbolism and subjectivising influences of traumatic life experiences in these men’s biographies. The article concludes by making the tentative suggestion that there is a complex and mediated causal link between traumatic experience and a deep subjective commitment to aggression and violence in adulthood.

The controversial effect of intoxication on sentencing outcomes has received renewed attention with a series of new empirical studies. However, these studies have relied on survey data that conflate alcohol and drug intoxication and miss pertinent contextual features of the offence. This article explores how alcohol intoxication, and its social context, impact sentence outcomes for violent offences. To do so, the probability of custodial sentence severity is modelled using multilevel Cox regression using data from online sentence transcripts. Findings contribute insights into how punishment is shaped by not only the presence of alcohol intoxication in offending but also in which contexts by highlighting the significant punitive effects of reference to concomitant drug use, the defendant drinking together with the victim and if the offence occurred in a private setting. This article explores the ways in which memory and humiliation can shape the social engagement of persistently violent men. Drawing upon field data from two of our previous ethnographic studies conducted in the North East of England, we hope to make a few basic points about the importance of emotion and memory as constitutive and dynamic components in the core of identity. Focusing on the emotional ‘feelings’ of humiliation and regret, we will outline how violent incidents or verbal challenges from earlier stages of the individual’s life-course can be drawn upon, both directly and indirectly, as motivational and justificatory instruments in potentially violent interactions in the here and now. The intention is to propose what might be important psychosocial elements of Bourdieu’s concept of habitus and how an exposition of these elements might further our understanding of subjective violence.

Bu araştırmanın amacı, Şiddeti Azaltma Psikoeğitim Programını (ŞAPP) geliştirmek ve geliştirilen bu programın eşine şiddet uygulayan erkeklerin saldırganlık, duygu yönetimi ve ilişki özyeterlik düzeylerine etkisini incelemektir. Araştırmada, “Ön Test-Son Test Kontrol Gruplu Solomon Dört Grup Modeli” olarak tanımlanan yarı deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemini amaçlı örnekleme yöntemiyle seçilen, şiddet suçu işlemiş ve eş şiddeti uyguladığı belirlenmiş olan Mersin Denetimli Serbestlik Merkezine bağlı 52 hükümlü erkek oluşturmaktadır. Basit seçkisiz yöntemle 2 deney ve 2 kontrol grubu oluşturulmuştur. Deney gruplarına 12 hafta boyunca geliştirilen “Şiddeti Azaltma Psikoeğitim Programı (ŞAPP)” haftada 1 oturum ve 90-110 dakika olarak uygulanmıştır. Kontrol gruplarına ise herhangi bir işlem yapılmamıştır. Verilerin analizi için “Bağımsız Örneklem T Testi’’, “Kovaryans Analizi” ve “Karışık Ölçümler İçin İki Yönlü Anova (Tekrarlı)” kullanılmıştır. Yapılan analizlerde geliştirilen programın (ŞAPP’ın), eşine şiddet uygulayan erkeklerin saldırganlıklarını azaltmada, duyguları yönetme becerilerini ve ilişki özyeterliklerini arttırmada etkili olduğu görülmüş ve ŞAPP’ın Türkiye’de şiddet uygulayan erkeklere uygulanabilir geçerli ve güvenilir bir program olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlar doğrultusunda ŞAPP’ın yaygınlaştırılması, benzer özelliklere sahip diğer erkeklere de uygulanması, önleyici faaliyet olarak da okullarda, halk eğitim merkezlerinde veya Rehberlik Araştırma Merkezleri (RAM) gibi benzeri kurumlarda öğrencilere ve velilere yönelik psikolojik danışmanlar veya alan uzmanları tarafından uygulanması gibi önerilerde bulunulmuştur..............................................(The aim of this study is to develop the Violence Reduction Psychoeducation Program (VRPP) and to examine the effect of this program on the levels of aggression, emotional management and relationship self-efficacy of men who have been violent towards their partners. The study uses a semi-experimental design, called the Solomon four-group model with pre-test-post-test. The sample consists of 52 convicted males in the Mersin Probation Service who committed violent crime and used violence on their partners. They were selected by the random sampling method. Two experimental and two control groups were formed by simple unselected method.The experimental groups were given 12 sessions of the Violence Reduction Psychoeducation Program (VRPP) over 12 weeks for 90-110 minutes a week. For the analysis of the data, the independent sample t test, covariance analysis, and two-way mixed ANOVA analysis of variance were used. The program developed was effective in reducing the aggressiveness of men who used violence against their partners, and in increasing their emotional management skills and relationship self-efficacy. The VRPP was found to be a valid and reliable program and is thus applicable to men who use violence in Turkey.)

This paper explores the ways in which particular forms of violence, namely violence against women and one-punch assaults, are framed in discourses of violence prevention in Australia. In denouncing certain acts, individuals and groups, I show that condemnatory responses—what I refer to here as ‘tough talk’—serve to reinforce, rather than challenge, hierarchical (gendered, raced, classed) difference as normative. Based on assumptions that link violence to particular ‘types’ of men, such approaches overlook the nuance, complexity and contextual meanings of violence. Preventing violence, I argue, requires that we engage with cultures of violence by focusing less on some men’s violence, instead recognising the interconnectedness of gender and other hierarchies of identity as the critical context for violence.

Although the history of the treatment of battering men is relatively brief, it is evident that a treatment paradigm is prematurely forming. This paradigm typically employs a structured group format, utilizing a sequence of preplanned psychoeducational sessions based on cognitive-behavioral principles. As its first goal, the article reviews the history and current status of treatment for abusive men. This review reveals the nature and origins of a host of biased, and largely unsubstantiated, assumptions about batterers and their responsiveness to treatment. The second goal is to dispute the utility of the structured therapy model that presently dominates the field. The author argues that all the topics, themes, and strategic skills commonly offered in structured educational programs will emerge as central topics of discussion during the natural course of events in the unstructured supervised self-help group format. The unstructured approach enables the therapist to spontaneously introduce various ideas and techniques at the most opportune moments in the group process, while avoiding the significant disadvantages of structured treatment programs.

Kadınların bir cinsiyete mensup olmalarından kaynaklı, aile içinde veya dışında erkeklerden gördüğü her türlü (sözel, fiziksel, cinsel) şiddet, kadına yönelik erkek şiddeti olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Bu araştırmada ahlaki uzaklaşmanın ve empatinin erkeğin eşine uyguladığı şiddeti adil bulma, mağdurla ve faille empati ve özdeşim kurma üzerindeki etkileri deneysel yöntemin kullanıldığı iki çalışmayla incelenmiştir. Birinci çalışmada kıskandığı eşi tarafından bıçaklanarak öldürülen mağdurun cinsiyeti (erkek, kadın) ve failin pişmanlık beyanı (pişman olma, pişman olmama, beyansız) manipüle edilirken, ikinci çalışmada eşi tarafından dövülen kadının dövülme gerekçeleri (aldatma, yemek yapmama, küfretme, nedensiz) manipüle edilmiştir. Birinci çalışmanın bulgularına göre, fail kadınsa, herhangi bir beyanda bulunmadığında; fail erkekse, pişman değilim dediğinde uyguladığı şiddet daha adil algılanmaktadır. Yüksek empati düzeyine sahip katılımcılar, fail kadınsa, erkek mağdurla daha fazla özdeşim kurmaktadır. Ahlaki uzaklaşma, pişmanlık beyanının kadınla özdeşim kurma ve yapılan şiddet eylemini adil bulma üzerindeki etkilerini düzenlemektedir. Empati düzeyi ile ahlaki uzaklaşma puanları arasında yüksek derecede anlamlı ilişki bulunmuştur. Ahlaki uzaklaşma puanı arttıkça erkek faile duyulan empati artmakta, ancak şiddet olayını adil bulma azalmaktadır. İkinci çalışma bulgularına göre, kadın aldattığı için kocası tarafından dövüldüğünde bunu hak ettiği düşünülürken; yemek yapmadığı için dayak yediğinde, bu durum haksızlık olarak görülmektedir. Yemek yapmadığı için şiddet gören kadınla özdeşim ve empati önemli ölçüde yükselirken, kadının eşini aldattığı durumda erkekle özdeşim ve empati artmaktadır. Ahlaki uzaklaşma arttıkça, erkek faille özdeşim de artmaktadır. Bulgular, ahlaki uzaklaşma ve saldırganlık arasındaki ilişkiyi gösteren literatürle uyuşmaktadır; ayrıca, geleneksel cinsiyet rollerine dair normatif beklentilerle uyumlu yöndedir.

Violent altercations can lead to serious injury and death, and yet some interpersonal disputes that prompt physical violence originate over what are seemingly trivial issues. This study evaluates the theoretical premise that violence stemming from what typically are defined as trivial altercations can be explained by what is at stake in these conflicts; trivial altercations, or fights about "nothing," actually represent symbolic contests of dominance and deference. These status contests are necessary primarily when the social relationship between opponents is symmetrical-when a dominance hierarchy is not clearly established. With well over 90 'one-punch' fatalities in the past decade, Australia likely holds the dubious honour of being at the epicentre of such incidents. In this article, we argue that political and legal responses to one-punch violence have been based on fairly cursory understandings of why these events occur. By way of contrast, we suggest that one-punch fatalities (and non-fatalities) are emblematic of deeper undercurrents of antisocial conduct and dispositions in late modern Australian life. In an effort to 'break open' the discursive limits of one-punch violence, we briefly engage with perpetrator narratives—the missing voice in these debates. Such engagement, we argue, is key to developing a more nuanced understanding of why male on male violence continues to be a major issue of sociocultural concern.

The 52s is a contemporary African American vernacular martial art that developed, according to oral tradition, as an effective means of defense in prison settings. Yet, in 52s, effectiveness is not good enough. Comments by resource persons assert that sick (destructive) hands must harmonize with sweet (artistic) moves. The competent fighter must maintain composure and control while destroying an opponent. Drawing techniques from literally any source available, including boxing, Asian martial arts, folk styles of combat, and dance, this "martial bricolage" is characterized by strategies, rhythms, and attitudes based in the interplay of the sick and the sweet. Comparable tensions are evident in urban folk games (slap "boxing"), dance (uprocking, break dancing), and verbal arts (freestyle rap). This article examines the aesthetic principles shared by these martial, ludic, and performance genres.

Over the past two decades, the activity of 'cage-fighting' has attracted massive audiences and significant attention from media and political outlets. Underlying the spectacle of these massconsumed events is a growing world of underground sport fighting. By offering more brutal and less regulated forms of violence, this hidden variant of fighting lies at the blurry and shifting intersection between licit and illicit forms of recreation. This paper offers a theoretical and ethnographic exploration of the motivations and emotive frameworks of these unsanctioned fighters. We find that buried within the long-term process towards greater civility rest the seeds for social unrest, individual rebellion and ontological upheaval. By revealing the dialectical relationship between contemporary mechanisms of control and these uncivil performances, we argue these transgressions are a visceral reaction to today's highly rationalized modes of state and social governance. More broadly, we attempt to understand the interrelationship between contemporary controls and sport fighting as a microcosm of the long-running struggle between civility and barbarism. . 1 'Steppin in' was a common term used by fighters to signify entering into a fighting-that is, 'stepping into' the fight space against another. As time in the field progressed, this term was also employed, then, to mean 'stepping out' of their regular life and into another.

With well over 90 ‘one punch’ fatalities in the past decade, Australia likely holds the dubious honour of being at the epicentre of such incidents. In this article, we argue that political and legal responses to one punch violence have been based on fairly cursory understandings of why these events occur. By way of contrast, we suggest that one punch fatalities (and non fatalities) are emblematic of deeper undercurrents of anti-social conduct and dispositions in late modern Australian life. In an effort to ‘break open’ the discursive limits of one punch violence, we briefly engage with perpetrator narratives – the missing voice in these debates. Such engagement, we argue, is key to developing a more nuanced understanding of why male on male violence continues to be a major issue of socio-cultural concern.

This 'Open forum' outlines proposals developed to reduce gender-based violence (GBV) at a South African university. It argues against simply viewing GBV as a security problem -GBV can only be effectively tackled if measures are developed to change the underlying social norms and overall institutional culture. Specific strategies include breaking the cultures of silence around GBV, establishing clear and visible norms for social behaviour, providing victims with effective support mechanisms, and having an effective body specifically mandated to develop policy and practices around GBV. They also include providing all students with intellectual opportunities to reflect on their own values and practices in order to develop a clear understanding of the impact of violent and discriminatory social behaviours, and to enhance positive skills for participating in diverse social environments. In conclusion, it is argued that implementing these proposals requires establishment of centres of authority within universities to develop and implement institutional reform based on comprehensive understandings of GBV.
