EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: GDL "Silent Infrastructure" (XIV–XV c.)Subject: Systemic Asymmetric Hydraulic Defense Network of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.Core Thesis:The defensive doctrine of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) was not characterized by passive, static fortifications, but rather by a high-level active engineering network that weaponized the hydrodynamic potential of the Nemunas, Nevėžis, and Merkys river basins. The Pastuva–Beiniūnai complex serves as the archetype for this "Silent Infrastructure," achieving a neutralization efficiency ($\eta_i$) of approximately 89.3%—vastly outperforming contemporary Western European defensive models.Methodology: The Kasiulevičius Predictive Defensive Model (KPDM):To identify and verify additional nodes within this state-wide network, the following multi-parametric model is applied:LiDAR Morphological Analysis: Detection of anthropogenic embankments and sluice signatures via high-resolution Digital Elevation Models (DEM).Hydro-dynamic Potential Assessment: Quantitative evaluation of kinetic energy output and flow management capacity at critical confluence points.Logistic Correlation ($Reisewege$): Mapping site potential against documented Teutonic Order military transit routes.Stratigraphic Sedimentation Forecasting: Identifying "sediment traps" where historical military material was systematically buried by engineered surges.Key Findings & Probabilities:Nevėžis Basin (Probability: 92%): Evidence indicates a "Volumetric Inundation" (Mud-Trap) strategy, engineered to paralyze heavy cavalry via targeted riparian inundation.Merkys Basin (Probability: 87%): Analysis suggests a "Gravitational Turbulence" strategy, utilizing river-slope differentials to create vortices capable of dismantling invading fleets at river confluences.Institutional Conclusion:The GDL defensive doctrine was a paradigm of "environmental self-defense." Invading forces were not merely delayed; they were systematically dismantled—a phenomenon of "logistical death" where the material evidence of conflict was buried in alluvial sediment. Kaleler, 19. yüzyılın ilk çeyreğine kadar Osmanlı idari pratiğinde önemli askeri ve idari işlevler üstlenen mekânlardır. Bu çalışmada, Ahıska Kalesi'nin 18. yüzyılın sonları ile 19. yüzyılın ilk çeyreğinde geçirdiği dönüşümün nicelik ve niteliğinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Jeostratejik konumu nedeniyle Osmanlı Devleti'nin özel önem gösterdiği kalelerden biri olan Ahıska, askeri mühimmat, zahire ve istihkâm bakımından sürekli lojistik destek almıştır. Rusya'nın Gürcistan'da hâkimiyet kurmasının ardından Osmanlı Devleti, Ahıska'nın savunması ve şehrin modernizasyonu için keşifler yaptırmıştır. Kafkasya'daki değişen askeri ve siyasi dengeler sonucunda sınır ötesi bağlantılar için üs haline gelmesi, kalenin önemini artırmıştır. Fortresses were places that fulfilled significant military and administrative functions within Ottoman administrative practice until the first quarter of the 19th century. This study aims to examine the quantity and nature of the transformation experienced by the Akhaltsikhe Fortress during the late 18th century and the first quarter of the 19th century. Due to its geostrategic position, Akhaltsikhe was among the fortresses to which the Ottoman State paid particular attention and for which it continuously supplied military ammunition, provisions, and fortification materials. Following Russia's establishment of authority in Georgia, the Ottoman State commissioned surveys to strengthen the defense and modernization of Akhaltsikhe. As changing military and political balances in the Caucasus turned the fortress into a base for connections with transboundary regions, its importance further increased.

The Imjin War resulted in numerous Koreans being captured and transported to Japan as captives. This study examines the experiences of these captives, including scholars, potters, farmers and artisans, focusing on their transition from ordinary to war captives, and their subsequent lives in Japan, mainly in Kyushu and western Japan. Drawing on diverse sources such as Korean envoys' diaries, captives' memoirs and local Japanese records, this research investigates the allocation processes and living conditions of captives in Japan. The study identifies three primary transportation routes significantly influencing captives' fates: sale to Japanese slave merchants, selective transfers by samurai and daimyo, and large-scale wartime relocations. Furthermore, it reveals that wartime mobilisation in Japan led to a shortage of administrative personnel, unexpectedly affording some captives relative freedom of movement. This freedom enabled them to establish social networks and integrate more effectively into Japanese society, offering new insights into captives' adaptation to alien environments.

A number of late medieval Fechtbücher – commonly referred to as
“fight books” – either contain or are bound with additional material, such as
gunpowder formulations or engineering solutions in the broadest sense. This
article focuses on one of these engineering solutions: gap crossings. Gaps – rivers,
ditches, trenches, moats, etc. – have always been a challenge for the military
commander. We shall compare the solutions found in the extended Fechtbücher
to contemporary tactical tracts and narrative sources to assess whether the
solutions offered there are realistic. The fact that they are is further evidence that
the early Fechtbücher can be understood as elements of general warfare manuals.

This study analyzes the military and logistical efforts of the council of Jerez de
la Frontera during the Late Middle Ages, with particular attention to the War of
Granada (1482–1492). The main objective is to quantify the city’s participation
in the conflict, determining the number of men-at-arms and the operations in
which they were involved. To provide context, the study includes brief notes on
the history of Granada and Jerez. The primary source used is the Cronicón de
Benito de Cárdenas, complemented by documents from the Municipal Archive
of Jerez, such as records of soldiers’ payments and military correspondence. The
analysis also examines the leadership of the operations, revealing new insights
in some cases. Overall, this study aims to offer a broad perspective on Jerez de la
Frontera’s contribution to the military effort during the War of Granada.

Bitwa pod Trzcianą 1629 Od lata 1626 roku trwała wojna polsko-szwedzka, która do początku roku 1629 nie przyniosła rozstrzygnięcia żadnej ze stron. 5 Października 1628 roku szwedzkie wojska zdobyły Brodnicę 1 ,jednak siły szwedzkie wycofując się w kierunku Elbląga poniosły duże straty od polskich wojsk prowadzących wojnę podjazdową 2. Następnie wojsko polskie rozłożyło się na leżach zimowych wokół Brodnicy blokując miasto by głodem zmusić je do poddania. Jednak stan wojska walczącego ze szwedzkim najeźdźcą przedstawiał się źle. Wojsko było nieliczne gdyż w listopadzie 1628 roku liczyło tylko 6000 żołnierzy zaś w styczniu nie więcej niż 5000 żołnierzy 3. Trudną sytuację polskich oddziałów wykorzystali Szwedzi, którzy uderzyli na rozłożonych wokół Brodnicy Polaków. Starcie to przeszło do historii pod nazwą bitwa pod Górznem i zakończyło się klęską Polaków. W bitwie dowodził Stanisław Potocki gdyż dowodzący dotychczas polskimi wojskami hetman Koniecpolski wyjechał na sejm do Warszawy. Do bitwy doszło 12 lutego i w wyniku szeregu błędów polskiego dowództwa bitwa została przegrana. Zginęło około 550 polskich żołnierzy ponad 400 dostało się do niewoli. Przeciwnik zdobył też 300 wozów taborowych i 4 armaty. Straty szwedzkie były niewielkie. Brodnica została uwolniona od polskiej blokady 4. Podbudowani zwycięstwem pod Górznem, Szwedzi uderzyli na Toruń, który obronił się przed skandynawskim najeźdźcą zaś polskie wojska zaczęły szarpać przeciwnika wojną podjazdową, która kosztowała go wiele strat. W końcu Szwedzi zgodzili się na rozejm, który obowiązywał od 18 marca 1629 do 10 czerwca 1629 roku 5 .

No ano de 1578, o desaparecimento de D. Sebastião na Batalha de Alcácer Quibir produziu uma crise sucessória no trono português, comprometendo a autonomia lusitana garantida por Afonso Henriques após a Batalha de Ourique em 1139. A ascensão de Filipe II de Castela ao trono de Portugal foi condicionada por exigências portuguesas, sendo a principal a possibilidade de representação da monarquia a partir da transferência da corte para Lisboa. O não cumprimento dos termos estabelecidos nas Cortes de Tomar (1581) inaugurou uma sequência de textos-tanto literários, como políticos-a respeito da honra e dignidade do reino de Portugal. Nos interessamos pelos defensores da precedência portuguesa na representação da monarquia, e como a proximidade à figura do monarca revela o caráter compósito dos Estados modernos ibéricos. A partir da análise do Tratado sobre a precedência do reino de Portugal ao reino de Napoles (1597), do frei beneditino Bernardo de Braga, e do Memorial de la preferencia, que haze el reyno de Portugal, y su consejo, al de Aragon, y de las dos Sicilias (1627), de Pedro Barbosa, é possível o entendimento dos conflitos de representação como um dos elementos nas disputas que construíram a monarquia compósita hispânica, caracterizada pelo posicionamento do rei como árbitro último e maior intermediador das querelas políticas. Based on a series of courses, beginning with a studio at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), this essay explores the American fort as a precedent in design. It refers to fortifications as geometric abstractions of war. The argument traces the forts' genealogy to tactics of projection, developed by French military engineers, Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban and the marquis de Montalembert. Conflating projectiles of mortar with projections of line and CNC tool paths, the essay proposes a practice of design focused on tour de main techniques. This figurative term becomes an alternative to the tour de force monuments of the avant-garde's compulsion for change. In these wars of abstraction, the rear-guard emerges from the design trenches as the harbinger of stasis.

Bu çalışma, Marsigli’nin Stato militare dell’Imperio Ottomanno adlı eserinde yer alan işaretlerin doğrudan yeniçeri remizleri olarak kabul edilmesi yönündeki yerleşik yaklaşımı yeniden değerlendirmektedir. Askerî teşhis işaretleri ile maddi kültür bağlamında ortaya çıkan sembolik temsiller arasındaki fark ortaya konulmakta; sekban örneği üzerinden epigrafik verinin önemi vurgulanmaktadır.

Yeni Çağ sosyal, ekonomik ve kültürel alanlarda olduğu kadar askeri alanda da bir yenileşme ve gelişmeler çağıdır. Bu çağın askeri organizasyonlarında, ekipmanlarında, taktik ve stratejilerinde meydana gelen gelişimler, Avrupalı devletlerin Dünya üzerinde farklı kıtalarda hegemonyalar kurması ve askeri alanda baskın güç olmaları süreçlerinde oldukça etkili olmuştur. Kimi tarihçilerce 'Askeri Devrim' olarak adlandırılan ve Batı uygarlığının yükselişinin temel iticisi olarak görülen Yeni Çağ askeri reformları; Orta Çağ'ın süvari üstünlüğüne dayalı ve çoğunluğu profesyonel askerlerden oluşmayan ordularının kademeli bir şekilde lağvedilip, bunların yerine asli unsuru piyade sınıfı olan, ateşli silahların yaygın kullanıldığı, programlı talimler ile disipline edilen, nicelik olarak büyürken nitelik bakımından da Orta Çağ ordularına göre daha iyi teşkilatlandırılan orduların kurulması şeklinde özetlenebilir. Yeni Çağ'da meydana gelen askeri gelişmelerin görüldüğü başlıca bölgeler: İsviçre, İtalya, İspanya, Avusturya, Alçak Ülkeler ve İsveç ve Almanya coğrafyalarıdır. Bu coğrafyalar da komutanlık yapan Gonzales De Cordoba, I. Maximillian, Maurice van Nassau, Gustavus Adolphus gibi isimler, tüfek ve topların yaygın olarak kullanıldığı çoğunluğu eğitimli piyadelerden oluşan, yeni taktikler benimseyen ordular kurmuş ve bu ordular sayesinde birçok muharebede galip olmuşlardır. Bu çalışmada yukarıda belirtilen bölgeler ve kişiler başta olmak üzere Batı Avrupa kara ordularında Geç Orta Çağlar'dan başlanarak askeri reformların hız kestiği 17. yüzyıl ortalarına kadar görülen değişimler incelenilmiştir. Askeri reformlar; silahlar, birlikler, taktikler ve organizasyonlar şeklinde başlıklara ayrılmış, bu başlıklar kronolojik olarak tasnif edilmiş, Yeni Çağ kara ordularında meydana gelen askeri reformların Avrupa tarihine yaptıkları etkiler açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır.

El objetivo de esta contribución es esbozar una breve panorámica de la historiografía reciente sobre el tema militar relacionada con los antiguos Estados de Italia, es decir, dedicada al espacio político y cultural italiano anterior a la Unificación de 1861. Una panorámica que, por supuesto, no pretende ser completa y exhaustiva – dada la complejidad y las numerosas facetas del tema –, sino que aspira más bien a subrayar cómo en las dos últimas décadas la definición de la historia militar ha adquirido unos confines decididamente más magmáticos que en el pasado, hasta el punto de abarcar y englobar firmemente ámbitos de investigación que antes se consideraban ajenos o, en todo caso, distantes del estudio de los conflictos y sus dinámicas. Se verá, en particular, cómo la reflexión historiográfica sobre temas y problemas de índole militar está hoy inextricablemente imbricada con el análisis de aquellos elementos económico-financieros, administrativos, jurídicos, religiosos, lingüísticos, artísticos y culturales en sentido amplio que marcan tanto la fisonomía de las sociedades de vez en cuando implicadas directa o indirectamente en el fenómeno bélico, como, por así decirlo, la materia social de los actores individuales y colectivos que implementan, explotan o sufren conflictos mayores y menores

This article investigates the largely overlooked cinematic representation of early modern military engineering, with a particular focus on hydraulic warfare. While water control—through flooding, diversion, drainage, and containment—was central to warfare between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, films often reduce these complex practices to spectacle or background detail. Examining this gap reveals how national cinemas differently frame engineering expertise, environmental manipulation, and state power, especially given water’s resistance to full human control. Through a comparative analysis of French, Italian, Dutch, and Japanese films depicting conflicts shaped by engineered waterways, inundations, and hydraulic siege tactics, the study explores how cinema reimagines the technical and environmental dimensions of early modern warfare. By treating water as both a historical instrument and a cinematic force, the article highlights how film mediates the interplay between technology, nature, and military strategy.

En principi, per expatriació militar hem d'entendre la sola realitat d'un col.lectiu d'homes, professionals o no, que lluita fora de la seva terra. Aquesta realitat, perb, té dos vessants, el voluntari i el forgat. Pel limitat nombre de phgines que permet una comunicació només podem exposar (i amb prou feines) el primer vessant, el del mercenari; el segon queda per a una propera ocasió. De la figura del soldat mercenari, que lluita en terres estranyes sense cap altre ideal que el mogui que el sou pagat per un sobirh estranger, se n'ha fet un tbpic cronolbgicament enquadrat en els segles de l'kpoca moderna, tanmateix, de mercenaris n'hi ! a hagut sempre, probablement des que va aparbixer el fenomen de la guerra. El s. I11 adC. Annibal Barca va comptar amb bascs i amb foners mallorquins per a la seva campanya sobre Roma, a la segona Guerra Púnica. Els romans llogaven cavalleria numida i tenien guhrdia de corps germanica. Els primers monarques castellans van conquerir Toledo amb ajut de cavallers borgonyons, i, a Catalunya, Tarragona era ocupada per guerrers normands. A la Baixa Edat Mitjana, qub no dir dels Almoghvers, soldats catalans llogats per Frederic de Sicília per lluitar a Atenes i Neophtria? Encara que I'exemple més paradigmhtic sigui el de les Companyies Blanques de Bertran du Guesclin. Aquest cabdill arreplega la soldadesca francesa desvagada després de la fi de la guerra dels Cent Anys, i, pagada per Pere I11 el Cerimoniós, la conduí a la península i l'aboch sobre Pere I de Castella. Allb va decidir aquella etapa de la guerra. Un dels punts que va caracteritzar la Revolució Militar va ser l'augment vertiginós del nombre de soldats en els exbrcits. Els setges i la necessitat de mantenir guarnicions a les fortificacions passaven a un primer pla, i no les batalles en camp obert, i aixb requeria homes, molts homes. Durant el s. XVII entre 10 i 20 milions d'europeus es van fer soldats

The author analyzes the report of Hans Katzianer and related reports on the campaign against the Ottomans in 1537. First, the movement of the army from Zagreb and Koprivnica to Gorjani is reconstructed, with special attention to the move from Osijek to Gorjani, in order to accurately record the military route from Osijek via Herman and Ivaniš/Ivanuš to Gorjani, including the crossings and bridges over the river
Vuka. Secondly, the parts of the reports relating to the burial, abandonment or destruction of heavy artillery, weapons, ammunition and pieces of equipment (wagons, carts, gun carriages, etc.) will be presented and analyzed to help archeologists locate hoards of metal objects and thus reconstruct the route as accurately as possible in order to discover the site of the final battle at Gorjani (October 1537).

U poglavlju se analizira izvještaj Hansa Katzianera i povezani dokumenti o pohodu protiv Osmanlija 1537. godine. Prvo, rekonstruira se kretanje vojske od Zagreba i Koprivnice do Gorjana, s posebnim naglaskom na potez od Osijeka do Gorjana kako bi se što preciznije detektiralo vojnu rutu na liniji Osijek - Herman - Ivaniš/Ivanuš - Gorjani, uključivši prijelaze i mostove preko rijeke Vuke. Drugo, prezentiraju se i analiziraju
dijelovi izvještaja koji upućuju na zakapanje, ostavljanje ili uništavanje teške artiljerije, oružja, municije te nepotrebnih dijelova opreme (zaprege, kola, nosiljke za topove i slično) s ciljem da se arheolozima pomogne locirati ostave metalnih predmeta na vojnoj ruti, kao i zasad nepoznato mjesto završne Bitke kod Gorjana (listopad 1537.).

The military operations in Prussia in 1659 bore the characteristics of siege warfare. The warring parties sought to capture cities and fortresses in order to gain control of the battlefield. The nature of the clashes favoured the Swedes, who, despite possessing smaller forces, compensated for their weakness by defending behind fortifications. The coalition forces lacked sufficient numbers of soldiers and artillery, which allowed the Swedes to hold on to the major cities-Malbork and Elbląg-while they evacuated smaller garrisons.

Öz: Osmanlı Devleti'nde kaleler, sadece askerî birer savunma noktası değil, aynı zamanda çevrelerindeki hinterland ile sıkı ekonomik ve idarî bağlara sahip olan stratejik merkezlerdir. Bu bağlamda XV. yüzyılın sonlarında Gelibolu Kalesi, Osmanlı Devleti'nin Trakya toprakları ile Ege'deki deniz güvenliğinde önemli bir rol oynarken, kalede görev yapan muhafızların geçim kaynaklarının büyük ölçüde Gelibolu sancağına bağlı Malkara Kazası'ndan sağlanması dikkat çekmektedir. Dolayısıyla kalenin bölgesel bir destek ağı ile ayakta tutulduğunu ve hinterland olarak Malkara'nın Gelibolu'nun askerî yapısını desteklediğini göstermektedir. Çalışmamızda, tahrir defterlerinden ve dönemin mühimme kayıtlarından hareketle Gelibolu Kalesi ile Malkara Kazası arasındaki ekonomik ve idarî bağlantı incelenmiştir. Böylelikle Osmanlı taşra yapısında kaleler ile hinterlandları arasındaki bağlantıların nasıl işlediği ve bu yapıların birbirini nasıl desteklediği Gelibolu Kalesi üzerinden ortaya konulmuştur.

This article analyzes Polish-Lithuanian military banners and standards from the 17th and 18th centuries, captured by the Swedes as war trophies and currently housed in the State Trophy Collection at the Army Museum in Stockholm. The history of these military ensigns is examined within the broader context of Polish-Swedish conflicts. The perception of these objects has evolved from symbols of military triumph to significant components of Swedish cultural heritage. Additionally, the article discusses contemporary debates on the restitution of cultural objects, addressing legal and historical challenges related to their potential return and implications for national identity and cultural heritage in both Poland and Sweden.

O presente estudo objetiva analisar as histórias narradas e as estratégias utilizadas na construção do discurso de apelação de súditos marginais, na ocasião em que se dirigiam à justiça do rei buscando alcançar sua clemência e, por conseguinte, ser perdoado do crime pelo qual foram acusados. Nessa perspectiva, o trabalho delimita-se a Portugal no século XV, durante a governança dos reis avisinos D. Duarte, D. Afonso V e D.João II, ou seja, de 1433 a 1495. Norteada pela historiografia portuguesa, francesa e polonesa e por uma metodologia fundamentada na análise comparativa dos discursos
observados em fontes arquivísticas as cartas de perdão , a pesquisa defende a hipótese de que um jogo de poderes era experimentado pelo rei e por seus súditos quando o monarca, amparado por um séquito de funcionários da justiça, avaliavam e respondiam os recursos deferindo-os ou não, a depender das circunstâncias e das fórmulas usadas pelos
requerentes com escopo de sensibilizá-los.

This study is basde on the "military revolution" theory initially proposed by Michael Roberts in the 1950s and further developed by historians such as Geoffrey Parker. It systematically examines the profound transformations in the military sphere during the Early Modern Period, exploring how these changes not only reshaped Europe but also triggered a paradigm shift on a global scale. The widespread adoption of firearms on the battlefield, advancements in military technology, and particularly the radical changes in the organizational structure of infantry units profoundly redefined war strategies and the structural organization of armies during this era. In this context, the replacement of the symbolic cavalry forces and the institution of chivalry from the Middle Ages by infantry units, the decisive role of firearms on the battlefield, the emergence of new fortification systems such as the trace italienne, and the progress in logistical infrastructure should be regarded as fundamental elements of the military revolution. Indeed, it is a well-established historical and technical fact that the impacts of these military transformations were not confined to the battlefield alone but also fundamentally altered the bureaucratic structures, economic resources, and international power dynamics of states. The establishment of centralized armies and the financing of standing forces accelerated the formation of modern states by enhancing states' tax collection mechanisms and administrative capacities. Within this framework, the research paperinvestigates the decisive role of the military revolution in the emergence of modern states during the Early Modern Period from a historical perspective. It comprehensively analyzes the mutual interaction between military strategies and political-economic structures, demonstrating how they shaped one another. Furthermore, it highlights that the theory of military revolution offers a comprehensive framework not only for understanding the history of warfare but also for elucidating the evolution of states and the shaping of the international system.

ÖZET
Dünya tarihinin geneli için 17. yüzyıl, geleneksel asker alma yöntemlerinin sınırlarının zorlandığı bir dönem olarak değerlendirilir. Savaşların zamana yayılmasıyla özdeşleşen bu yüzyıl, mevcut asker temin usullerinin revize edilmesi ve yeni asker temin yollarının denendiği bir dönemdi. Osmanlı için de bu yüzyılda devşirme ve timar sisteminde yaşanan aksaklıklar, asker temininde sınırların zorlandığının işaretleriydi. Yüzyılın sonlarından itibaren Osmanlı ordusunda yeni asker temin usulleriyle sahaya sürülen gruplar ortaya çıktı. Bunlardan biri de isim olarak daha klasik dönemden itibaren bildiğimiz fakat mahiyet itibariyle oldukça farklılık arz eden kapıkulu süvarileri serdengeçtileriydi. Bu çalışma, 18. yüzyılda Osmanlı ordu terkibi içinde karşımıza çıkan kapıkulu süvarileri serdengeçtileriyle ilgilidir. 16. yüzyılın sonlarından itibaren örneklerini gördüğümüz kapıkulu süvari serdengeçtiliğinin, belli standartlara sahip bir asker temin yöntemine dönüşmesi incelenecektir. Çalışmamızın giriş kısmında asker teminiyle ilgili genel bir değerlendirme yapılıp makalenin sınırları tayin edilecektir. Birinci kısımda 16. yüzyılın sonlarında cephenin kendi dinamiklerinden ortaya çıkan serdengeçti kavramı üzerinde durulacaktır. İkinci kısımda ise 18. yüzyılda artık olağanüstü durumlarda başvurulsa da belli standartları olan bir asker temin pratiğine dönüşen kapıkulu süvari serdengeçtiliği çeşitli yönleriyle ele alınacaktır. Bu manada bu asker yazma pratiğine hangi sıklıkla başvurulduğu, hedef kitlenin kimler olduğu, adaylardan beklentinin ne olduğu ve bunlara ne vadedildiği, beklenti ve vaatleri yansıtan bürokratik işlemler hakkında bilgi verilecektir. Çalışma, konunun genişliğinden dolayı merkezin kapıkulu süvari serdengeçti yazım kararı almasından yazım işlemi için görevlendirme yapmasına kadarki süreçle sınırlandırılmıştır.

The seventeenth century marks a turning point in which traditional methods of military recruitment increasingly pushed the limits. This century, characterized by protracted wars, witnessed the revision of existing recruitment systems and experimentation with new methods. The deterioration of the devşirme system and the timar system showed that the Ottoman Empire was also pushing the limits of military recruitment. From the late seventeenth century onward, new military groups emerged in the Ottoman army, deployed through revised recruitment methods. One of these groups was the serdengeçtis of Kapıkulu cavalry, whose name dated back to the classical period but whose role and composition had undergone a significant transformation This study focuses on the serdengeçti cavalrymen within the kapıkulu corps, a formation that emerged within the structure of the Ottoman army during the 18th century. It examines kapıkulu cavalry serdengeçti, first seen in the late sixteenth century, which gradually evolved into a relatively standardized form of military recruitment over time. The introduction provides a general overview of Ottoman military recruitment practices and outlines the article’s scope and analytical framework. The first section explores the emergence of the serdengeçti phenomenon in the late sixteenth century, which was primarily shaped by the dynamics of frontier warfare. The second section examines the transformation of the kapıkulu cavalry serdengeçti, which was primarily employed under exceptional circumstances in the eighteenth century, yet had nonetheless evolved into a recruitment method with a certain degree of standardization. In this regard, the study will examine how frequently this method of enlistment was employed, the profile of the intended recruits, the expectations of the candidates, the promises made to them and the bureaucratic mechanisms that reflected these mutual expectations. Due to the broad scope of the subject, this study is limited to the period between the central administration’s decision to enlist Kapıkulu cavalry serdengeçtis and the assignment of officials to carry out the enlistment process.

China is home to a myriad of artforms, both known and shrouded in mystery. China also has a deeply rooted history in warfare and innovative use of weaponry. Gunsmithing and gunnery techniques are often overlooked while thinking about art. Many people do not realize that both are artforms in themselves, maybe because of their more practical or violent applications. Many weapons are deeply intertwined with human feeling, philosophy, and religion. The earliest depictions of gunpowder weapons in the world are from a 10th century mural in the Mogao Caves of Dunhuang (Ted Mitchell, THE SILK ROAD: YESTERDAY & TODAY). Matchlocks were most likely introduced in the late 1400's or early 1500's by the Ottoman Empire through trade 1 . This could have been through the Silk Road or it could have been through sea trade . An important note before the question is there seems to be two different kinds of matchlocks that spread throughout Asia. One style I will be calling "Middle-Eastern style" based on the designs by the Ottoman Empire (Needham, Joseph 1986), and the "snap-lock style" shown in Figure and Figure , that was spread by the Portuguese in the early to mid 1500's (Sanceau 1936, 114). My main goal however, is to find what countries influenced matchlocks in China and how. 1 Sultan Bayezid II (1481 -1512) equipped his troops with effective "new" matchlocks in the early 1400's with similar style locks. (Needham, Joseph 1986 p. 443).

W 1717    r. przeprowadzono nową dyslokację obu armii Rzeczypospolitej, tworząc ponad 200 garni-zonów. Załóg wojskowych nie wprowadzono jednak do dwóch miast stołecznych: Krakowa i Wilna. W  Krakowie załogę wojskową zainstalowano już w 1720    r., ale Wilno nie doczekało się garnizonu państwowego do końca panowania Wettinów w Rzeczypospolitej. W latach 1717-1763 do Wilna wprowadzano załogi wojskowe w okresie wojennym lub okazjonalnie w celu zapewnienia odpowiedniej oprawy militarnej i zabezpieczenia policyjnego na czas ważnych uroczystości odbywających się w  mieście: ingresów wojewodów wileńskich na urząd, reasumpcji Trybunału Głównego czy posiedzenia hetmańskiego sądu wojskowego. Z tych okazji ściągano na krótko do Wilna kilkadziesiąt, kilkuset żołnierzy państwowych.

In 1717, a new deployment of both armies of the  Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was carried out, establishing over 200 garrisons. However, military garrisons were not stationed in the two capital cities: Kraków and Vilnius. In Kraków, a military garrison was installed as early as 1720, but Vilnius did not receive a permanent state garrison until the end of the  Wettin rule in the Commonwealth. Between 1717 and 1763, military units were stationed in Vilnius only during wartime or occasionally to provide military presence and security for major events held in the city. These included the inauguration ceremonies of Vilnius voivodes, the resumption of the  Supreme Tribunal, or the sessions of the  hetman’s military court. On such occasions, several dozen to several hundred state soldiers were temporarily deployed to Vilnius.

Podczas działań wojennych w Polsce i Prusach Książęcych w 1656    r. posiłkowy oddział Tatarów dowo-dzony przez Subchan Ghazi agę wziął do niewoli kilkudziesięciu oficerów i podoficerów szwedzkich. Wśród nich znajdowali się generał major Israel Ridderrhielm, pułkownik Hans Engel i podpułkownik Koch. Artykuł omawia problematykę związaną z wykupieniem jeńców z niewoli tatarskiej ma pod-stawie zachowanych w Riksarkivet w Sztokholmie specyfikacji zawierających ich personalia oraz ustalone sumy wykupu oraz korespondencje Ridderhielma z królem szwedzkim Karolem Gustawem, jego bratem księciem Adolfem Janem i Bogusławem Radziwiłłem. Omówione zostały także zabiegi dyplomatów szwedzkich na Ukrainie i w  Mołdawii mające na celu uwolnienie jeńców. Nastąpiło ono w 1661 r. po zawarciu porozumienia z poselstwem tatarskim w Szwecji.

During the military operations in Poland and Ducal Prussia in 1656, a Tatar auxiliary unit commanded by Subchan Ghazi Aga captured several dozen Swedish officers and non-commissioned officers. Among them were Major General Israel Ridderrhielm, Colonel Hans Engel, and Lieutenant Colonel Koch. The article discusses issues related to the  ransom of these prisoners from Tatar captivity, based on preserved records in the Riksarkivet in Stockholm. These records include personal details of  the  captives, the determined ransom amounts, and correspondence between Ridderrhielm and the  Swedish King Charles Gustav, his brother Prince Adolf John, and Bogusław Radziwiłł. The article also examines the efforts of Swedish diplomats in Ukraine and Moldova aimed at securing the prisoners’ release, which ultimately took place in 1661 following an agreement with a Tatar delegation in Sweden.

En los últimos años los investigadores se han centrado en la reconstrucción histórica, en base a documentación administrativa y cotidiana, de la vida y aventuras de los hombres integrados en las tropas de la Monarquía española: lo que se ha denominado “nueva historia militar”

Riga was founded in 1201, and its official establishment by Albert, the third Bishop of Livonia, was due to the requirements of canon law, which mandated that a bishopric’s seat be located in a city. The previous seat of the diocese, Üxküll, situated on a small island in the Dvina River approximately 30 km from its mouth into the Gulf of Riga, did not meet
this condition. In its initial phase, Riga was primarily a port, serving not only merchant ships with goods. Above all, it served pilgrims (crusaders) who arrived after the opening of navigation in the Baltic Sea following Easter for a year-long stay, hoping to benefit from plenary indulgence for participating in battles against pagans. Throughout the thirteenth
century, Riga was the most important departure point for military expeditions against pagans and potential apostates. Sometimes, the city became the target of attacks by the indigenous population, especially dangerous in winter, when the Dvina was crossed by the Lithuanians and Semigallians. The river also facilitated (not always peaceful) contacts
with the Rus’ Principality of Polotsk.

Erdel Prensliği, Gábor Bethlen'in iktidarının ardından nüfuz alanını komşu devletler aleyhine alabildiğine genişletmiş ve Erdel, literatürdeki deyimiyle, "altın çağı"na girmiştir. I. Rákóczi'nin iktidarıyla birlikte Erdel'de kurulan merkezî hükümet ve kalıtsal hanedanlığın bayraktarı olan II. Rákóczi, nüfuz alanını bir adım daha genişletmek arzusuyla II. Kuzey Savaşı'na (1655-1660) İsveç tarafında dahil olmuştur. Osmanlı yönetimi prensin başarısız 1657 Seferi sonrasında, II. Rákóczi'nin Lehistan üzerine sefere çıkarken "padişahın rızasını almadığı" savını öne sürerek, Erdel ve müttefikleri Eflak ve Boğdan'a yıkıcı harekâtlar düzenleyecektir. Bu harekâtların sonucunda 1659'da Eflak ve Boğdan tekrar merkezî idareye bağlanmıştır. Sürecin sonunda Erdel'in en önemli kalelerinden biri olan Varad, 14 Temmuz 1660'ta Serdar Ali Paşa komutasındaki büyük bir Osmanlı ordusu tarafından kuşatılmış ve 45 günlük çetin bir mücadelenin ardından kale vire ile teslim alınmıştır. Erdel'e 1658'den itibaren yapılan sert Osmanlı-Tatar müdahaleleri Habsburg İmparatorluğu ve Krallık Macaristanı'ndaki Macar soyluları nezdinde de akis bulmuş ve "yaklaşan Osmanlı tehdidine karşın" ne yapılabileceği birçok kez görüşülmüştür. 1658-1660 Harekâtları ile Osmanlılar, serhad beyleri ve Kırım Hanlığı gibi Rákóczilerden rahatsız olan diğer grupların da mücadeleyi kararlıkla sürdürmesi sayesinde Doğu Avrupa'daki hâkimiyetlerine yönelik "Rákóczi tehlikesi"ni bertaraf edebilmişlerdir. Tezin ilk bölümü, Osmanlı-Erdel-Habsburg üçgeninde yaşanan siyasi ilişkilere odaklanmıştır. İkinci bölüm, Erdel'in Lehistan'da yaşanan karışıklıklara olan müdahalesi ve buna karşın Osmanlı yönetiminin sert tepkisini ele almaktadır. Bu tepki, 1658-1660 "cezalandırma harekâtları" ile vücuda gelecektir. Üçüncü ve son bölüm, monografik olarak 1660 Varad Kuşatması'na hasredilmiştir.

II. Viyana Kuşatması'nın ardından Osmanlılar, birçok cephede Kutsal İttifak'a katılan devletlerle savaşmıştı. 1683-1699 yılları arasındaki savaşlarda Macaristan'da Osmanlıların hakimiyetindeki pek çok kale düşman orduları tarafından kuşatılmıştı. 1684 yılında meydana gelen Budin Kalesi kuşatması savaşların seyrinde önemli bir yere sahipti. Kutsal Roma İmparatorluğu ordusu Eski Macar İmparatorluğunun başkenti ve Osmanlıların Macaristan'daki en önemli kale-şehrini ele geçirerek Viyana zaferini ödüllendirmek istemişti. Budin Kalesi'nin çağın yeni kale tahkimatlarıyla güçlendirilmemiş olması İmparatorluk ordusu kumandanlarını kısa bir sürede şehri fethedeceklerine inandırmıştı. Ancak dört ay süren kuşatmanın sonunda Budin'i işgal edememişlerdi. Bu çalışmada Budin Kalesi'nin bu uzun muhasaraya nasıl karşı koyduğu konu edilecektir. İlk bölümde Budin Kalesi'nin 17. yüzyılın sonuna kadar geçirdiği dönüşüm hakkında bilgi verilecektir. İkinci bölümde, Viyana kuşatmasından sonra Osmanlılar cephesinde yaşanalar ve İmparatorluk ordusu kumandalarının Budin Kalesi'ni kuşatma kararının sebepleri açıklanacaktır. Üçüncü bölümde Budin kuşatmasının safhaları incelenecektir. Düşmanın kuşatma planı, hangi burçları hedef aldıkları ve bunun kuşatmanın sonucuna etkileri değerlendirilecektir. Budin muhafızlarının düzenledikleri huruçların ve imdat ordusunun faaliyetlerinin kuşatmanın sonucuna etkileri de izah edilecektir. Çalışmanın sonunda Budin kuşatmasının çağın kuşatma savaşları çerçevesinde yeri ve önemi hakkında yorum yapılacaktır.

В статье рассматривается проблема управляемости войск на Руси периода Позднего Средневековья. Проанализированы три битвы: под Суздалем (1445 г.), под Русой (1456 г.) и у оз. Смолина (1502 г.) – все они закончились поражением для той стороны, представители которой занялись сбором трофеев во время сражения. Подобные эксцессы были связаны с низкой управляемостью средневекового войска, состоявшего из отдельных отрядов, контролировать которые в условиях боя было практически невозможно. На северо-востоке Руси управляемость войска повысилась благодаря преобразованиям, которые начались в Московском государстве при Иване III, однако полностью искоренить практику сбора трофеев в ходе сражений так и не удалось. В республиканских городах северо-запада Руси, Новгороде и Пскове, вплоть до их присоединения к Великому княжеству Московскому сохранялась традиционная военная организация, основой которой являлось городское ополчение. Как следствие, управляемость новгородского и псковского войска на поле боя оставалась низкой, и оно оказывалось в уязвимом положении из-за того, что теряло дисциплину, когда появлялась возможность обогатиться за счет добычи.
The article examines the problem of troop control in Russian lands during the Late Middle Ages. Three battles are analysed: the Battle of Suzdal (1445), the Battle of Rusa (1456), and the Battle of Lake Smolino (1502) – all of which ended in defeat for those who began looting during the combat. Such incidents were associated with the poor controllability of medieval armies, which consisted of separate detachments that could hardly be controlled during battle. In the North-Eastern Rus’, troop control was improved by reforms initiated in the Muscovite state under the rule of Ivan III, but it was impossible to fully eliminate the practice of gathering trophies mid-battle. In the republican cities of the North-Western Rus’ – Novgorod and Pskov – the traditional military organisation, based on urban militias, remained until the annexation by the Grand Duchy of Moscow. As a result, the controllability of Novgorodian and Pskovian troops on the battlefield was low, and they became vulnerable, losing discipline whenever an opportunity for looting arose.
