From the beginning steps in 1979 to record and learn about Lake Champlain's submerged heritage, volunteer sport divers have provided leadership and labor for surveys and documentation studies. Volunteer sport divers continue to play key roles in fund raising, advocacy, and education and outreach programs about Lake Champlain's submerged historic heritage. The Vermont model of volunteer sport divers as vital components of an underwater archeology program is mirrored in all states that have successful underwater heritage programs.

Avocational metal-detecting in Finland has produced a mass of new and important archaeological data over the past ten years, and responsible metal-detectorists act as citizen science archaeologists. Important steps have been made in producing digital archaeological data services aimed at both professionals and the public, including the Ilppari online finds reporting service and the Find-Sampo citizen science data service and semantic online heritage portal. But with this development work we have also seen that more attention needs to be put on data quality, data structure, database design, and on development work of digital services in order for them to influence a higher user potential. In our paper we argue, through select case studies, that appropriately recorded metal-detected finds possess tremendous possibilities for advancing archaeological understanding of the past. This data can be used for creating new spatial analysis, for identifying previously unrecorded and therefore vulnerable archaeological sites, and for identifying new potential research areas.

This paper presents the CoinSampo demonstrator, a web application and data service created to open data on numismatic citizen finds reported in Finland between 2013 and 2023. The data has been converted to Linked Open Data (LOD) using light weight ontologies that were based on the data. The CoinSampo web application queries a knowledge graph with SPARQL, and offers users faceted search and various visualization options for data analysis. The application is aimed at researchers, heritage professionals, citizen scientists, amateur archaeologists, educators and the general public. We will also show how the underlying user interface framework can be applied to other similar data such as the finds data of the British Museum.

This article concerns opportunities for improving systems for processing public finds through digital technology and citizen science, taking England, Estonia, and Finland as case studies. These three countries have differing legislation, but all face a significant growth in hobby metal detecting and consequent increase in archaeological finds being reported, which places pressure on existing resources for recording them. While archaeologists in the different countries all value public finds as items that add to public collections, provide information about sites at risk, and can advance research, their priorities vary. This has an impact on approaches to processing finds, but offers the chance to embrace digital technology and involve the public. This article shows how digital technology and public involvement in archaeology have already facilitated change in all three countries and highlights further opportunities these might provide, given a growing desire to democratize archaeology and share public finds data as widely as possible.

“Discovering Mikulčice”: Unearth the mysteries of the Great Moravians, the people of one of the earliest West Slavic geopolitical units, through the lens of the groundbreaking 1954 discovery of Mikulčice’s medieval stronghold. The site revealed the Grand Duke’s palace, three bridges, ten churches, and a remarkable trove of gold and jewellery.

This documentary unveils an early medieval fortress located near the Austrian border in the eastern part of today’s Czech Republic, offering new insights into the lives, culture, and political world of the Great Moravians in the ninth century.

The article examines how material remains, ranging from everyday objects to monumental heritage sites, act as active catalysts for memory, belonging, and identity. Taking Hein Bjerck’s research on things, materiality, and remembrance as its point of departure, it discusses the relationship between the personal “memory lane” and institutionalized cultural heritage. Particular attention is paid to how authorized heritage, World Heritage status, and mass tourism may distance local communities from their own historical environments. Drawing on examples from Afghanistan, Myanmar, and China, the article highlights the vulnerability of cultural heritage in contexts of war, conflict, and political instrumentalization. It argues that the destruction of cultural monuments entails not only the loss of global heritage value, but also profound personal and local losses. The article foregrounds “situated knowledge” as a necessary perspective for understanding the emotional and social significance of heritage. In doing so, it challenges a narrowly institutional conception of cultural heritage in favour of a more experiential and relational understanding of the past.

Reabrir as portas do Theatro Municipal de São Paulo, ainda sob o eco de uma pandemia que nos exigiu reinvenção e escuta atenta, foi também reencontrar uma encomenda antiga, adormecida nas dobras do tempo. Aos poucos, o disperso ganhou contorno: partituras manuscritas, fotografias de estreias, recortes de jornal, programas de espetáculo, entre tantos outros documentos. Esse material, testemunha silenciosa de mais de um século de vida cultural, não era mero depósito do passado; era, antes, uma potência adormecida. O desafio, desde o início da gestão da Sustenidos, consistiu em dar forma a essa potência, transformá-la em política pública de memória e, sobretudo, em ferramenta viva para o presente. Nasce assim, em 2021, o Núcleo de Acervo e Pesquisa (NAP), e com ele a decisão institucional de que a memória do Theatro não seria guardada como relíquia, mas sim agitada, interrogada, posta em cena. Cinco anos depois, celebramos esse percurso com a publicação que ora apresentamos. Acervo em cena: encontros com a memória do Complexo Theatro Municipal de São Paulo é muito mais do que um registro de atividades. É um testemunho coletivo, urdido por aqueles que, no cotidiano da poeira dos arquivos e da delicadeza da conservação, têm-se dedicado a uma tarefa essencial: fazer do acervo um território de descobertas. A própria materialidade do livro -construído com base nas vozes de sua equipe, protagonista direta das experiências aqui relatadas -já anuncia uma premissa cara a este Núcleo: a de que o saber sobre a memória se constrói na prática compartilhada, na troca disciplinar e na confiança em um time excepcionalmente qualificado. É preciso nomear, aqui, o rigor e a sensibilidade da gerente Ana Lucia Lopes, cuja visão articulou formação, acervo e memória em um eixo indissociável, e do coordenador Rafael Domingos, cuja liderança paciente e sistemática tem transformado desafios aparentemente intransponíveis em rotinas de excelência. Mas, como se verá nas páginas seguintes, a eles se somam muitas outras mãos e mentes -arquivistas, conservadoras, pesquisadoras, documentalistas -, cada qual responsável por uma camada do complexo trabalho de manter viva a memória de um teatro que é, acima de tudo, um organismo pulsante. A criação do NAP, no bojo da gestão da Sustenidos, respondeu a um duplo entendimento.De um lado, a certeza de que um equipamento da magnitude do Theatro Municipal de São Paulo não poderia seguir sem uma política de acervo à altura de sua trajetória. De outro, a percepção de que o arquivo não se sustenta como fim em si mesmo. Ele só faz sentido na medida em que se abre, compartilha, se transforma em matéria para novas criações, novas pesquisas, novas perguntas. Daí o compromisso, desde o início, com estruturar não apenas um local de guarda, mas um centro de referência vivo, capaz de alimentar a programação da casa -e de outras casas -com as vozes plurais que o constituem. Quantas montagens, quantos concertos, quantos gestos cênicos não encontram ali a centelha primeira? Quantos pesquisadores, coreógrafos, diretores e músicos não se deixam afetar por esses vestígios, reconfigurando seus próprios fazeres? O potencial do acervo, como se verá nesta publicação, extrapola em muito os limites de um depósito documental. Ele é, por excelência, um dispositivo para oxigenar o presente, para tensionar o cânone, para revelar o que foi silenciado ou esquecido. E, no entanto, todo esse trabalho carrega uma fragilidade que não podemos escamotear. Políticas de memória exigem continuidade. Não se constrói um arquivo de referência em cinco anos, mas se lançam, nesse período, as bases sólidas que permitirão a ele frutificar nas décadas seguintes. É, também, um livro que apresenta, reflete e celebra os desafios e conquistas no percurso de implantação do Núcleo de Acervo e Pesquisa, que, desde 2021, realiza a gestão integrada e articulada desse patrimônio. Ο τίτλος της ενότητας προέρχεται από το ομώνυμο τραγούδι του Διονύση Σαββόπουλου, από τον δίσκο Το περιβόλι του τρελού, που κυκλοφόρησε το 1969 από τη Lyra. Οι «Πίσω μου σελίδες» είναι ιστορικά άρθρα που έγραψα την περίοδο 2008-2012, όταν άρχισα να πειραματίζομαι με την ιστορική γραφή, ενώ παράλληλα είχα ξεκινήσει και την έρευνα για τα Δημοκρατικά Τάγματα. Τα κείμενα αυτά είναι σαφώς ελλιπή. Έχουν λάθη, υπερβολές έκφρασης και, σε ορισμένα σημεία, περισσότερους συναισθηματισμούς. Σκέφτηκα αρκετά πριν τα υπογράψω ξανά, τα αναστηλώσω και τα παρουσιάσω εδώ. Επικράτησε όμως η σκέψη ότι αποτελούν μέρος μιας διαδρομής που δεν θέλω ούτε να αποκηρύξω ούτε να απαρνηθώ. Αντιθέτως, τα φέρνω στο μυαλό μου με νοσταλγία. Είναι κείμενα μιας πρώτης εποχής, τότε που δοκίμαζα τρόπους αφήγησης, θέματα, ύφος και οπτικές, αναζητώντας τη δική μου φωνή μέσα στην ιστορική γραφή. Η λογική της αναστήλωσης ήταν απλή: να διατηρηθούν, όσο γίνεται, η αρχική ιδέα και η πρώτη εκτέλεσή της. Διορθώθηκαν ορθογραφικά και τυπογραφικά λάθη, καθώς και ορισμένα εμφανή πραγματολογικά ή ιστορικά σφάλματα. Δεν επιχειρήθηκε όμως να εξαφανιστεί η ηλικία των κειμένων. Οι αδυναμίες τους παραμένουν, γιατί και αυτές μαρτυρούν κάτι από την εποχή και τον άνθρωπο που τα έγραψε. Ακολουθούν, λοιπόν, κάποιες από τις παλιές μου αγάπες-που, θέλω να πιστεύω, θα πάνε στον παράδεισο.

Wasteball is an experimental game created within the MAPPA Lab at the University of Pisa. Played daily after the laboratory's communal lunch, it involves all members (professors, postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates, students, and interns) regardless of role, background, or gender. With simple rules and an informal setting, the game nonetheless fulfils a profoundly pedagogical role. Wasteball was conceived as a form of academic team-building: a ritual of play that transforms the laboratory into a collaborative and inclusive environment. By suspending hierarchies, it fosters inclusion, trust, and a shared sense of belonging, thereby shaping the social conditions under which scientific knowledge is produced. At the same time, Wasteball can be read as a piece of archaeogaming and experimental heritage, in which play becomes a medium for reflexive data-making and for rethinking the ethics of cooperation in research. This paper situates Wasteball within the theoretical frameworks of archaeogaming, game-based pedagogy, and the anthropology of institutions, arguing that play can serve as a method for cultivating cooperative and situated epistemic communities and sustaining collective care in academia.

En los últimos años, la discusión sobre el patrimonio cultural amenazado por la acción humana y los efectos del cambio climático se ha incrementado de forma notable, tanto por la multiplicación de la legislación, normativas y programas promovidos por diferentes organizaciones internacionales y administraciones (estatales, regionales, locales) como por el aumento del interés en esta temática por parte de grupos de investigación y de gestión del patrimonio. En este contexto, distintas aproximaciones al estudio de la vulnerabilidad del patrimonio y a la implementación de herramientas de priorización de las intervenciones y mitigación del daño surgieron desde finales de la década de 1990 e inicios de la de 2000 en algunas regiones europeas. En este trabajo presentamos los resultados de 20 años de experiencia en el desarrollo y aplicación de distintas perspectivas al problema de la erosión del patrimonio arqueológico del área atlántica (Europa y América). Desde su implementación inicial en el año 2006 en el oeste de Francia, el análisis de la vulnerabilidad del patrimonio arqueológico litoral por medio de un formulario de campo (Vulnerability Evaluation Form - VEF) ha demostrado ser una herramienta versátil y eficaz para proporcionar datos cualitativos y cuantitativos que permiten orientar las políticas científicas y de gestión de los yacimientos. A fecha de hoy, esta perspectiva ha sido aplicada en el oeste de Francia (regiones de Bretaña y Pays de la Loire), noroeste de España (Galicia), Antillas francesas (islas de Guadeloupe y Saint-Martin) y Uruguay (región Este), habiéndose adaptado a nuevos contextos más allá de los estrictamente litorales.

The consequences of the coronavirus pandemic are and will continue to be devastating for the tourism sector, especially for the cultural one. It is necessary to reflect on the new strategies to be adopted to deal with the heavy losses that the world of cultural heritage is suffering. The great archaeological attractions will no longer be able to accommodate the prepandemic numbers and therefore we must also think of alternative routes to present the minor heritage of our country. In recent years, our experience has allowed us to realize an open-air museum project in bioarchaeological sites (archaeological cemetery areas characterized by the recovery of human remains) that are part of an archaeological heritage that is little known, but which reserve great dissemination and fruition potential. The design of an archaeological itinerary, even a virtual one, which includes the bioarchaeological sites that we are musealizing, could offer a new visiting experience, especially in this diff...

O livro Acervo em cena: encontros com a memória do Complexo Theatro Municipal de São Paulo, é uma publicação dedicada à trajetória de preservação, gestão e difusão de seu patrimônio documental. Dividido em duas partes, História e Memória e Experiências, o livro apresenta reflexões sobre a formação e conservação de importantes coleções ligadas à memória cultural paulistana. Entre os acervos abordados estão a Coleção de Arte da Cidade, o Fundo Conservatório Dramático e Musical de São Paulo, o Acervo do Balé da Cidade de São Paulo e a Coleção de Figurinos da Central Técnica Chico Giacchieri. Os capítulos reúnem contribuições de integrantes do Núcleo de Acervo e Pesquisa e colaboradores convidados, articulando análise histórica e experiências práticas relacionadas ao trabalho cotidiano de preservação da memória institucional.

The territory of the Municipality of Colli al Volturno extends in the upper Volturno valley in the province of Isernia, along the off-shoots of the Mainarde mountain system in an area where today, as in ancient times, the main communication routes converge between Abruzzo, Lazio and Campania. The site being excavated, Monte Tuoro, is part of a larger settlement system from the Samnite age which includes the adjacent fortified hill of Monte San Paolo, one of the longest polygonal city walls in Sannio, which encloses an area of approximately 500 ha, necropolar areas, polygonal structures of different interpretations and areas of clay fragments. From the structural archaeological evidence from the materials found, it appears likely that the archaeological complex of Monte Tuoro may have a sacred function. The previous excavation campaigns had mainly involved the area in front of the entrance to the terrace, where the discovery of votive material had led to the hypothesis of the presence, on the platform we investigated, of a sacred area, a temple building, a sanctuary high-altitude or rural Samnite, outside the town (in our case ev-idenced by the walls of Monte S. Paolo). Now, despite the mass of limestone stone elements removed in the current excavation campaign, no molded architectural element was found, either in situ or in the resulting materials. It therefore appears difficult to postulate the presence of a temple building with monumental characteristics, like many contemporary complexes widespread in Sannio, but the hypothesis of a Hypetro temple prior to the Romanization of Sannio is gaining ground.

This review examines Chiara Bonacchi’s Understanding Populism through Big Data (UCL Press, 2022), which explores how populist movements use digital communication to advance ideological goals. Drawing on large-scale social media data linked to events such as Brexit and the 2018 Italian elections, Bonacchi demonstrates how narratives around heritage and nationalism are strategically framed online. The book offers a valuable interdisciplinary contribution to debates on populism, digital politics, and the role of big data in shaping contemporary political discourse.

A kulturális örökség tárgykörébe tartoznak mindazon értékek, amelyek a magyar nemzet több mint ezeréves múltjának, jelenének és jövője szempontjából pótolhatatlan, egyedi, meg nem újítható forrásai, amelyeket a nemzeti, valamint az egyetemes kultúra elválaszthatatlan részeinek tekintünk. Ide tartoznak a nyelvi, a történeti, a képző- és iparművészeti, valamint, épített környezeti emlékeink is, amelyeknek rendkívül széles tárgyköre és szerteágazó szabályozási rendszere bizonyos lehatárolásokat kíván.

Цей огляд присвячено висвітленню археологічного аспекту виставкового проєкту «РЯТУВАТИ ТА ДОСЛІДЖУВАТИ: Більський археологічний комплекс, сезони 2022–2024», який реалізувала команда Історико-культурного заповідника «Більськ» уперше за час повномасштабного вторгнення. Більшість предметів експозиції — уламки ліпленої кераміки, вироби з бронзи й заліза, знаряддя з глини, кістки й каменю, а також реставрований глиняний посуд великих та середніх форм. Комплексний підхід до створення експозиції допоміг всебічно висвітлити культурно-хронологічний розвиток Середнього Поворскля від початку бронзового віку до постмонгольського часу. Наголошено на значенні міжнародної співпраці для захисту культурної спадщини України в умовах збройного конфлікту. Визначено, що археологічний компонент експозиції ґрунтовно та якісно репрезентує наукові здобутки дослідників Більського мікрорегіону та актуалізує питання збереження матеріальної та духовної спадщини як основи історичної ідентичності українського народу.

The history of the conservation of the hypoge- um on Via Dino Compagni begins with its accidental discovery in early 1955. It is precisely the circumstances of the discovery, so intrusive and traumatic due to the insertion of the foundation piles for the building that was to be erected above, that immediately necessitated a series of signi cant interventions for its conservation.

This article examines the evolution of geocivilizational potential in Europe across three major historical phases: the Greco-Roman phase, the medieval transitional phase, and the Anglo-Saxon modern phase. Using a geohistorical and civilizational framework, it explores how Europe’s physical geography has influenced the formation of distinct systems of values, governance structures, and intellectual traditions.
The study argues that European geocivilizational development is rooted in Greek humanist philosophy, subsequently transformed through Roman institutional organization, medieval socio-political restructuring, and later reconfigured by Germanic, French, and British contributions. The Anglo-Saxon phase, in particular, consolidates modern political forms through constitutionalism, liberalism, and global maritime expansion.
Rather than viewing European civilization as a linear progression, the article conceptualizes it as a layered geocivilizational process in which each historical phase contributes cumulative structural elements. The contributions of Athenian democracy, Hellenistic synthesis, Enlightenment rationalism, and British constitutional monarchy are analyzed as key milestones in this long-term formation.
The study further emphasizes the role of geography not as a passive background factor but as an active structuring force shaping political organization, economic systems, and cultural orientations over the longue durée (Braudel, 1979). In this sense, European civilization is interpreted as the outcome of a continuous interaction between environmental constraints and historical agency.
The article includes eight structured sections, employs APA 7th in-text citations throughout, and integrates 53 scholarly references drawn from major works in history, political theory, and civilizational studies.

Methods for extracting archaeological information from large, digital databases of cultural resource management (development-led archaeology) records are frequently quantitative or aggregative. This approach can struggle to capture the details of how archaeological knowledge is produced socially. Here, the authors draw on archival science to describe 'project biography' as a means to understand how archaeological records-and their silences-are produced through decisions weighing the risks of development. This approach is illustrated using examples from South Africa's digital heritage records database (SAHRIS), while also considering ethical entailments and the need to better understand the social worlds of cultural resource management.

Faced with frequent provocations and skepticism, which test skills and abilities, through its pages, we are equally transported to a world of adventurous discoveries, where we can explore the wonders of Northeastern archaeology. With clear and engaging writing, the authors guide us through archaeological sites, artifacts, and fascinating stories, providing a unique and unforgettable view of this region so rich in history and culture. Thus, this work, so different from its first version, becomes almost mandatory reading for anyone interested in archaeological discoveries, Brazilian history and culture. Os 12 Simpósios Temáticos, coordenados por especialistas nas áreas, apresentam trabalhos de vários estados brasileiros, indo do Norte ao Sul, em um encontro singular e especial. Nessa esteira, este Caderno de Resumos apresenta a prévia destes trabalhos, e serve como uma espécie de guia dos debates e prévia do que os trabalhos completos irão apresentar.
Muito embora a grande tragédia da pandemia do Covid-19, das milhares de vidas ceifadas, a comissão organizadora do evento agradece a todas e todos, que colaboraram para a execução desse evento, em um momento tão difícil e conturbado da nossa história.

Este artigo analisa três lápides remanescentes no Cemitério da Candelária, em Porto Velho, Rondônia, construído no contexto da Estrada de Ferro Madeira-Mamoré e do Hospital da Candelária. A pesquisa investiga a materialidade funerária, a paisagem cemiterial e os registros históricos associados a trabalhadores, imigrantes e sujeitos esquecidos do início do século XX. Por meio da Arqueologia Histórica e da Arqueologia da Paisagem, o estudo registra e interpreta três sepulturas visíveis: uma de um português e duas de indivíduos de origem judaico-marroquina, cujas inscrições hebraicas preservam memórias religiosas, familiares e sociais. O trabalho contribui para o resgate da presença judaica na Amazônia, para a valorização do patrimônio cultural portovelhense e para a compreensão das dinâmicas de memória, migração, morte e identidade no contexto da construção da Madeira-Mamoré.

When considering comics, our initial association tends to be with content
tailored for a younger audience. Indeed, within the general publishing
industry, the predominant perception aligns comics with a children-
oriented paradigm. Nevertheless, over recent decades, comics, particularly
in the guise of graphic journalism, have rightfully earned their place as a
tool for disseminating information and scientific knowledge. Through a
unique fusion of images, artwork, narrative voices, and dialogues, the
conventional comic book has transcended mere fantasy storytelling,
evolving into a sophisticated form of illustrated reportage.
In the forthcoming pages, Emiliano Barletta and Alessio Lo Manto
illuminate the vast potential inherent in the language of comic books for
communicating scientific archaeology to an adult audience beyond the
professional sphere. How might this expressive medium reshape both the
perception and substance of our discipline? Can it foster a more inclusive
and thus socially relevant dimension within archaeology? Perhaps, as
readers of Ex Novo delve into these pages, they will sense our shared

Nel diritto romano, la damnatio memoriae era una pena consistente nella cancellazione di qualsiasi traccia relativa a una determinata persona e con essa ogni prova della sua esistenza; al malcapitato dunque, toccava una sorta di “morte civile”.

In the last two decades, the mobilities turn in anthropology and archaeology has resulted in a widened scope for mobility studies. This includes a renewed interest in ontological questioning of the human condition, new methods for mapping humans and nonhumans (things, materials and ancestral beings) alike, and a wider range of scalar levels of analysis. Somewhat paradoxically, however, given this widened scope, during the same period African archaeology has undergone a main crisis, characterised by inter-and intradisciplinary siloing and seclusion from stakeholders and policymakers. Geospatial technologies have a vast potential in contributing to solve this crisis. However, after more than a decade of promising geoarchaeological approaches seeking to harness universalist geospatial technologies into localised, context-sensitive insights, the potential remains unfulfilled, as geospatial archaeology is largely detached from other ways of doing

This paper explores the importance and implications of a multivocal and ethnographic approach to archaeological praxis and interpretation of artefacts. Drawing from post-colonial and archaeological disenfranchisement perspectives, an attempt has been made to review the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and other agencies' strategies and their resultant hegemonic dominance over archaeological sites and narratives, thus marginalizing local and indigenous narratives and knowledge systems. Focusing on certain Jain heritage sites of Purulia, biased conservation and preservation strategies have been observed along with the collection of neighbouring local community narratives which revealed a sense of apathy towards archaeological authorities along with a sense of pride towards the material revealing the disenfranchisement of material heritage. The paper thus explicates the importance of the inclusion of multivocality and ethnographic methodologies into the archaeological praxis, allowing for the inclusion of minority narratives and recognizing the importance of multiple ontologies and epistemes.

La presente ponencia es un recorrido a través de más de una década en el sitio arqueológico Estero Rabón, ubicado en el ejido de San Isidro del municipio de Sayula de Alemán, en el sur de Veracruz. Dicho sitio es de
gran relevancia debido a que es considerado un centro secundario de la sociedad olmeca y de la cual hay evidencias por sus monumentos escultóricos que hasta la actualidad algunos de ellos se encuentran en el
ejido San Isidro. Mediante las investigaciones arqueológicas llevadas a cabo desde el año 2012, surgió el Proyecto arqueológico Estero Rabón (PAER); al tener interacción con los pobladores observamos que desconocían sobre su patrimonio a su alrededor y aunado a ello no lo sentían como suyo porque son migrantes de otras ciudades, por ello se consideró necesario a través de la arqueología pública plantear metas y diferentes actividades que permitieran que la comunidad valorara y protegiera su patrimonio arqueológico. Sin embargo, el PAER tuvo que enfrentarse al reto ¿Cómo puede la comunidad proteger su patrimonio arqueológico?, así que se planearon diferentes actividades con las cuales hemos visto cambios significativos que nos permiten tener esperanza de que la comunidad en el futuro cuidara de su patrimonio.

Bioarchaeologists, museums and universities, journal editorial boards, and academic professional organizations are working toward ethical engagements with human remains, with a focus on descendant community engagement. This article reexamines past and present bioarchaeological descendant community engagement to consider how "descendant community" has been defined. The authors present three case studies to highlight variation in descendant community definition in practice. The first describes the Loretto Bioarchaeology Project, a community-engaged investigation of the lives of Catholic Sisters (1870-1969) based in Denver, Colorado. The Loretto Community of Sisters and affiliates acts as the descendant community, centering 'chosen' family over biological relationships. The second case study discusses two hurricane victims from the 1928 Hurricane, in Belle Glade, Florida. A biological descendant community is impossible given the population of migrant laborers that died in the storm, but a community of care has been developed at a local memorial site for the storm. The third case study considers next-of-kin reported in archival documents pertaining to persons in the Huntington Anatomical Collection (1893-1921), currently housed at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History. While next-of-kin documented at decedents' deaths include biological kin, bonds were also created through shared residence and life in New York City, problematizing notions of lineal descendants in the present. The case studies represent a multiplicity of "family," "descendants," and "kin," complicating policies for defining and prioritizing descendant communities and offering examples of paths forward through different iterations of community in bioarchaeological practice. Gender discrepancies among peer-reviewed publications in academia have become a topic of great interest to archaeologists over the past two decades. Overall, this research has demonstrated a consistent bias towards men, who tend not only to publish more often but are also much more likely to serve as first or sole author. In the current study, we examine publishing trends in the peer-reviewed, four-field journal Plains Anthropologist between 1954 (the inaugural publication of this journal) and 2023, covering a span of 69 years and 266 issues, the longest temporal study in gendered publishing to date. During this time, men have published as first author in 82 percent of articles, while women serve as first author in only 17 percent of publications, which is one of the highest rates of gendered discrepancies recorded in a peer-reviewed archaeological journal to date. Further, this discrepancy has remained fairly constant since the early 1990s, with an overall decrease in the rate of women authors since that time.

Today's landscape of public archaeology foregrounds intentional practices, ensuring that archaeologists are aware of our actions and their repercussions. While we are intentional in our planning and implementation of public projects, this article argues that we are not adequately prepared for ending them. Many projects die for various reasons, get passed on to new generations of practitioners, and some simply come to a natural ending. A lack of discussion around project death, however, leads to unintentional endings or confusing continuities. Public archaeology is an intense emotional experience, and feelings of betrayal can emerge when a practitioner or the community partner exits the partnership unexpectedly. This article explores these issues from the perspective of an American scholar at a small public university and asks what an intentional ending to a public archaeology project looks like. It also asks how we can co-create and co-manage such an intentional ending with our community partners. Rather than fear the death of a project, there may be power in embracing the grief of ending a collaboration and soothing the emotional rupture. Finally, it concludes by suggesting that a rite of passage or celebration of the end may be necessary to mark the project as complete, allowing the partners to mourn and move on.

n the chronicles of Dominica’s maritime history, the name Neville Ellison Wade of Portsmouth shines as a testament to ingenuity, resilience, and devotion to craft. Wade was more than a boat builder; he was a visionary entrepreneur and master mariner whose divinely inspired workmanship touched the lives of all who encountered him. His life was marked not only by his extraordinary ventures in shipping and navigation but also by his wide range of enterprises that spanned industries vital to Dominica’s economic development.

Early Entrepreneurship and Spirit of Innovation
From a young age, Neville exhibited a remarkable entrepreneurial spirit. At only seventeen, he ordered goods such as flour from Canada, an unusual feat for one so young in mid-20th-century Dominica. His ventures were varied and expansive: stone crushers for construction, taxi services, a driving school charging only three dollars an hour, block making, vehicle and dumper construction, a gas station, body work, and spray painting. Yet, of all his enterprises, it was in ship-building and navigation that Neville’s genius shone most brightly.

First Steps into the Sea
Neville’s maritime journey began in the 1950s. His father owned a small shop in Glanvillia, and young Neville, responsible for replenishing groceries, became fascinated by the crates in which imports such as onions, cod fish, and herring arrived. He stacked them carefully, awaiting a purpose. That purpose revealed itself when, between the ages of eight and ten, he built his first dinghy, a 10-foot craft caulked with breadfruit milk chewed to form glue. Rowed across the bay by Sonny Ferrara, this child’s project foreshadowed the astonishing career that followed.

By 1965, after secondary school, Neville had built a 20-foot boat powered by a converted Austin motor car engine. When that boat burnt, he returned immediately to the woods to gather timber and start again. This relentless determination became his lifelong hallmark.

Bu çalışma, sosyal sorumluluk projelerinin eğitim üzerindeki etkisini öğretmen görüşleri doğrultusunda incelemektedir.   Araştırma bulguları, bu projelerin öğrencilerin sosyal, duygusal ve akademik gelişimlerine olumlu katkı sağladığını göstermektedir. Özellikle empati, sorumluluk bilinci, iş birliği ve iletişim becerilerinin geliştiği vurgulanmaktadır. Ayrıca projelere katılan öğrencilerin özgüvenlerinin arttığı ve daha sosyal bireyler hâline geldikleri belirlenmiştir. Öğretmenler, en çok dezavantajlı gruplara yönelik projelerden etkilendiklerini ifade etmiştir. Toplumsal düzeyde ise bu çalışmaların dayanışma, yardımlaşma ve hoşgörü gibi değerleri güçlendirdiği görülmektedir. Bununla birlikte, okullarda sosyal sorumluluk projelerine yeterince önem verilmediği ve daha çok akademik başarıya odaklanıldığı da belirtilmektedir.
