Daily prophylaxis with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ) significantly decreases morbidity and mortality among people living with HIV. Some clinicians are reluctant to use TMP-SMZ in pregnant and breastfeeding HIV-infected women because of concerns about the possible teratogenicity when used in the first trimester and about its potential to induce hyperbilirubinemia near term and during early breastfeeding. We systematically reviewed evidence regarding the toxicity of TMP-SMZ prophylaxis in pregnant and breastfeeding women to help guide practice in resource-limited settings. We identified relevant literature by searching PubMed and MEDLINE via OVID, Embase, and Science Citation Index for data on hyperbilirubinemia, kernicterus, and teratogenicity associated with administration of sulfonamides and TMP-SMZ through July 2005. Citation analysis was used to determine if the Sciences-Engineering Library at the University of California at Santa Barbara is meeting the needs of an interdisciplinary group of 60 faculty members at the new California NanoSystems Institute. The latest three publications of each faculty member (published within the last two years) were analyzed in two ways using the Science Citation Index: 1) the journals they were published in, and 2) the journals where cited articles were published. The results indicate that the library subscribes to 98 percent of the journals in which faculty members are published or are citing frequently. This information is useful to map the citation patterns of a new interdisciplinary field and can be used for future collection management decisions. This article was originally published in Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship. Mechanical and Environmental Engineering, and Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology. Each of these departments has its own collection manager and fund codes, the CNSI does not. The goal of this study is to use citation analysis to investigate whether the Sciences-Engineering Library at UCSB is meeting the needs of the recently established CNSI. Citation analysis measures how often items are cited in references, bibliographies, or indexing tools and compares their frequency of occurrence to collection holdings . This process assumes the items used by the authors occur as citations in their work. This assumption may fall short due to unacknowledged influences on the authors' work that are outside the scope of this project. This study is aimed at developing a core list of journals for and identifying journals that should be added to the collections in the Sciences-Engineering Library at UCSB.

Objectives: The purpose of this paper was to determine publication patterns of basic science faculty (medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, and pharmacology) in research-intensive US colleges of pharmacy utilizing the Science citation index (SCI) database. A secondary purpose was to determine the sensitivity of our SCI search method in identifying basic science faculty publications. Methods: We searched SCI for publications by basic science faculty from five randomly selected health sciences-based, public colleges of pharmacy for each of the years 1999-2003. The search strategy involved searching individual faculty by state, year and author name. Results: Our search strategy had a false-positive error rate of approximately 2%. Basic science faculty published an average of 3:6 þ 4:25 publications per year (95% CI 3.2 -4.0) for the years 1999-2003. Approximately 15% of the faculty published 50% of the total publications. Full professors ðn ¼ 215Þ averaged significantly higher publications per year (4.77) compared to associate professors ðn ¼ 135Þ at 2.75, and assistant professors ðn ¼ 120Þ at 2.59. Pharmacology faculty ðn ¼ 114Þ averaged significantly lower publications per year (2.60), compared with pharmaceutics faculty ðn ¼ 178Þ at 3.90 and medicinal chemistry faculty ðn ¼ 172Þ at 4.11. Conclusion: These data provide normative values to compare publication rates among research-intensive basic science pharmacy faculty. However, simple publication counts such as these provide no insight into the quality or importance of the published information.

Purpose Research. This study aims to analyze the influence of library facility usage on the visiting decisions of the academic community at Universitas Kristen Maranatha. Amidst digital transformation, the library's role as an intellectual hub is vital, yet relatively low visit data presents a paradox. This research is important for providing an empirical analysis of the relationship between facility usage and visiting interest. Research Method. Using a quantitative correlational approach, primary data were obtained through an online questionnaire from 125 respondents selected using a simple random sampling technique. Direct observation and literature studies were also conducted as secondary data. Analysis Data. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics software. Validity (Pearson Product Moment) and reliability (Alpha Cronbach) tests were conducted to ensure the research instrument was reliable. Hypothesis testing was performed using Spearman's rank order correlation analysis at a significance level of 0.05. Results. : A significant relationship was found between the use of library facilities and the visiting decision, with a correlation coefficient of 0.780, which is classified as "high". Visitors gave a very positive perception of the facilities, especially the comfort of the rooms. Conclusions. The quality and completeness of facilities have a strong and significant influence on a person's decision to visit the library, indicating that investment in infrastructure and resources is an effective strategic step to increase visits.

The existing Science Citation Index only counts direct citations, whereas PageRank disregards the number of direct citations. We propose a new Comprehensive Citation Index (CCI) that evaluates both direct and indirect intellectual influence of research papers, and show that CCI is more reliable in discovering research papers with far-reaching influence.

The purpose was to establish a ranking of the 50 most cited articles about wrist surgery and analyse their features. Science Citation Index Expanded was used to identify the 50 most frequently cited orthopaedic journal articles written in English, searching for the topic “wrist surgery” in the subject category ‘‘Orthopaedics’’. Then, we analysed the number of citations, citation density, authorship, article institution, the year of publication, the country of origin of the article, name and impact factor of the journal, and publication type of the article. The 50 most cited articles were published in only 6 of the 74 journals included under the category “orthopaedics”. Citation count ranged from 256 for the first one to 67 for the 50th article. Studies about the influence and impact of knowledge-producing organisations' (e.g., universities or R&D institutions) have been addressed by means of strict economic analysis, stressing their economic impact in a local, regional or national extent. In the present study, an alternative methodology is put forward in order to evaluate the international scientific impact and influence of a knowledge-producing and -diffusing institution. Two main branches of the literature, dealing with the measurability of the economic impact of R&D organisations and their knowledge flows, are surveyed: standard economic studies, and scientometrics and bibliometrics analyses. With the aim of implementing an approach closer to the latter methods, we map the international scientific network of a knowledge-producing organisation using social network analysis statistical tools and thus assess the international impact and influence of such institution. Using INESC Porto -a Portuguese private non-profit organisation, recognised as being of public interest, due to its R&D activities -as our case study, we analyse the dynamics of its scientific production over the last two decades, attributing special attention to the international scientific co-authorships' evolution, outlining the architecture of the knowledge network and its changing pattern. Additionally, focusing on the most prolific scientific areas of INESC Porto, and resorting to published scientific work recorded in the Science Citation Index (SCI) of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), we trace citations and infer over INESC Porto's international scientific influence and impact.

Analysis of the publishing rate and the number of citations of general surgery dissertations Afterwards, the dissertations were sought in different databases, i.e. PubMed, Thomson Reuters Web of Science, Google Scholar database, and Turkmedline website (www.turkmedline.net) through which many international journals can be reached, by the author names to check whether they had been published in a journal or not. In case of publication; if the journal was included in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), the date when the article was published, the first author, the person who made the article publicly available, and the number of citations to the related article were evaluated from Thomson Reuters Web of Science. Citations were assessed by publication date, and the number of citations per year was determined.

Background PubMed is the most widely used method for searches of the medical literature, but fails to identify many relevant articles. Electronic citation tracking offers an alternative search method. Methods Articles investigating the role of depression in the aetiology and prognosis of coronary heart disease were sought through two methods: a) PubMed, and b) citation tracking where Science Citation Index was searched for all articles which cited ("forward citation tracking") or were cited by ("backward citation tracking") any of the articles in an index review. The number and quality of eligible articles identified by the two methods were compared. The surge in the number of authors per article in the biomedical field makes it difficult to quantify the contribution of individual authors. Conventional citation metrics are typically based on the number of publications and the number of citations generated by a scientist, thereby disregarding the contribution of co-authors. Previously we developed the p-index that estimates the dependency of a scientist on co-authors during their career. In this study we aimed to evaluate the ability of the p-index to identify researchers with a relatively high degree of scientific dependence on co-authors. For this purpose, we retrieved articles, which were rejected for publication in Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis and subsequently published elsewhere. Assuming that authors who were added to a later version of these articles would not fulfill the full authorship criteria, we tested whether these authors showed a larger dependency on co-authors during their scientific career as would be evident from a higher p-index. In accordance with this hypothesis, authors who were added on later versions of articles showed a higher p-index than their peers, indicating an enduring pattern of dependency on other co-authors for publishing their work. This study underscores that questionable authorship practices are endemic to the biomedical research, which calls for alternative methods to evaluate a scientist's qualities.

The growing complexity of challenges involved in scientific progress demands ever more frequent application of competencies and knowledge from different scientific fields. The present work analyzes the degree of collaboration among scientists from different disciplines in order to identify the most frequent "combinations of knowledge" in research activity. The methodology adopts an innovative bibliometric approach based on the disciplinary affiliation of publication co-authors. The field of observation includes all publications (167,179) indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-E) for the five years 2004-2008, authored by all scientists in the hard sciences (43,223) at Italian universities (68). The analysis examines 205 research fields grouped in nine disciplines. Identifying the fields with the highest potential of interdisciplinary collaboration is useful to inform research polices at national and regional levels, as well as management strategies at the institutional level.

The purpose of our study was to analyze scientific papers published by South Korean plastic surgeons in journals included in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), and to evaluate the publication and research activities of Korean plastic surgeon. We conducted a survey of SCIE papers in the field of plastic surgery published by South Korean authors between 2001 and 2010 using Web of Science software. We further analyzed these results according to the number of publications per year, journals, institution, and type of papers. We also compared the total number of citations to published scientific papers. We analyzed the rank of South Korea among other countries in representative journals. Colloids are widely used in the replacement of fluid volume. However doubts remain as to which colloid is best. Different colloids vary in their molecular weight and therefore in the length of time they remain in the circulatory system. Because of this and their other characteristics, they may differ in their safety and efficacy. To compare the effects of different colloid solutions in patients thought to need volume replacement. We searched the Cochrane Injuries Group specialised register, the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register (2002 Issue 3), MEDLINE (1994-2002/07), EMBASE (1974-2002 August week 1), and the National Research Register (2002 issue 3). Bibliographies of trials retrieved were searched, and drug companies manufacturing colloids were contacted for information. The search was last updated in September 2002. Randomised and quasi-randomised trials comparing colloid solutions in critically ill and surgical patients thought to need volume replacement. The main outcomes measured were death, amount of whole blood transfused, and incidence of adverse reactions. Two authors independently extracted the data and assessed the quality of the trials. Fifty-seven trials met the inclusion criteria, with a total of 3659 participants. Quality of allocation concealment was judged to be adequate in 20 trials and poor or uncertain in 37. Deaths were obtained from 36 trials. For albumin or PPF versus hydroxyethyl starch (HES) 20 trials (n=1029) reported mortality. The pooled relative risk (RR) was 1.17 (95% CI 0.91, 1.50). For albumin or PPF versus gelatin four trials (n=542) reported mortality. The RR was 0.99 (0.69, 1.42). For gelatin vs HES 11 trials (n=945) reported mortality, RR was 1.00 (0.78,1.28). RR was not estimable in the albumin vs dextran, gelatin vs dextran, and HES vs dextran groups. Thirty-six trials recorded the amount of blood transfused, however quantitative analysis was not possible due to skewness and variable reporting. Fifteen trials recorded adverse reactions, but none occurred. From this review, there is no evidence that one colloid solution is more effective or safe than any other, although the confidence intervals are wide and do not exclude clinically significant differences between colloids. Larger trials of fluid therapy are needed if clinically significant differences in mortality are to be detected or excluded.

It is one component of a broader study, "Mapping the Literature of Nursing," by the Medical Library Association's Nursing and Allied Health Resources Section Task Force to Map the Literature of Nursing. Methods: Following a standard protocol, this project utilized Bradford's Law of Scattering to analyze the literature of nephrology nursing. Citation analysis was done on articles that were published from 1996 to 1998 in a source journal. Cited journal titles were divided into three zones, and coverage in major article databases were scored for Zones 1 and 2. Results: During the three-year period, journals were the most frequently cited format type. Eighty-one journals were cited in Zones 1 and 2. As Bradford's Law of Scattering predicted, a small number of the cited journals accounted for the most use. Coverage is most comprehensive for cited journals in Science Citation Index, PubMed/ MEDLINE, and EMBASE. When looking just at cited nursing journals, CINAHL and PubMed/MEDLINE provide the best indexing coverage. Conclusion: This study offers understanding of and insights into the types of information that nephrology nurses use for research. It is a valuable tool for anyone involved with providing nephrology nursing literature.

Libraries are a leading actor developing the discussion about Open Science in the Russian scientific field in the competition between them, publishers, repositories and scientific institutes. Understanding the vision of the role of libraries in Open Science will help determine the contours of the possible implementation of the concept in Russia. Based on an analysis of the range of relevant sources, the author describes the transformation of the role of libraries in the conditions of Open Science based on the reconstruction of their ideas. To achieve this goal, the article performs a number of tasks, including: identifying the context for the formation of ideas about the role of libraries, identifying the prerequisites for changing the role of libraries, identifying the old and new roles of libraries in Open Science, identifying barriers to the implementation of the new role of libraries in Open Science. It is noted that the interest in Open Science on the part of Russian libraries occurs in accordance with global trends. Open Science for libraries is presented in the Russian scientific field as a challenge caused by the increasingly complex scientific environment. Such challenges encourage libraries to redefine their place in the information ecosystem of the future, and Open Science is a key aspect on the basis of which libraries build their strategic development. The active role of libraries in the development of Open Science is due to synergetic factors. However, the author also notes the observed forced nature of libraries’ participation in the development of Open Science. The author comes to the conclusion that the leadership of libraries in the discussion regarding Open Science in the Russian scientific field is due to more than just competition for the possession of a resource, but has an existential character against the background of the risks of libraries being ousted from the process of scientific communication.
