Demola V Akinyoade
I am an academic, resource person, social entrepreneur, author, publisher and administrator. I hold membership of the Guild of Independent Scholars (Lagos Priori) Florida, USA, and publisher of the Journal of Alternative Perspectives in the Social Sciences. I was the founding faculty and Head of the Department of Peace and Development Studies, the acting Program Coordinator of the Peace and Development Studies Program, the founding University Examination Officer, and a Senate Member of Salem University, where I worked fulltime as a lecturer from 2008-2011. I have a B.Sc. [Hons.] and M.Sc. degrees in Geography and Planning Science, and Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Ado-Ekiti and the University of Ibadan respectively. I am a Ph.D. candidate in Peace and Conflict Studies Program, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. I have received research grants and scholarships from the Program on Ethnic and Federalist Studies (PEFS) of the University of Ibadan for his Master’s degree; the French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA), Ibadan, Nigeria for my doctorate field work; the United States Department of State’s Bursary for Applied Dual-Use Biosecurity Education. I am an International Peace and Security Institute’s Nelson Mandela Scholar; a two times
Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) Scholar and the prestigious Swiss government [Pro-Helvetia] Scholar affording him the study of federalism at the Institute of Federalism, University of Fribourg, Switzerland. I was selected as one of the exceptional 101 Young African Leaders to participate in the 5th African Business Leaders Forum held in Accra, Ghana. I am a Chartered Mediator and Conciliator (Ch.MC) and member of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators of Nigeria (ICMC). I founded a consultancy firm, Helmsman Consult, which focuses on peacebuilding and conflict management. Through Helmsman, I design nationwide, regional and community social interventions programs, including Sensitization and Promotion of a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence in Nigeria. My major general knowledge publications include Human Networking: Achieving more than you can through the power of connections; The networking corper; Networking for job; Peace for All: Citizens’ Sensitization on a Culture of Peace; and Leadership (Membership and Followership).
RESEARCH FOCUS AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO KNOWLEDGE
My research activities have focused on peace and conflict sensitivity, peace and conflict impact assessment (PCIA), peace education, peace and conflict research, gender studies, violence against women, applied dual-use biosecurity education, and Humanities and Social Science Methodologies. I have recently added African spiritualism and security; conflict-crime nexus; and ethics to my research interests.
Due to the nature and orientation of my main field of interest—Peace and Conflict Studies—my research has necessarily being trans-, multi- and pluri-disciplinary and policy-relevant. I have also emphasized the link between the philosophical foundations (ontology and epistemology), theoretical, and methodological issues in peace and conflict research. In peace and conflict sensitivity, my work has contributed to improved impact measurement through concept-theory and theory-practice fits. I have made significant progress in building an explanatory theory—Peace and Conflict Sensitivity Theory—on the interactions of intervention and conflict context. I am currently investigating the interactions of the Niger Delta Development Commission intervention and the Niger Delta context. The research is contributing to knowledge on the nature, dynamics and implications of intervention-context interactions in conflict settings.
My works on peace education has contributed to knowledge on the nexus of ‘peace’, ‘peace education’ and ‘culture of peace’; the peace themes in and adequacy of Nigerian Education Curricular to build citizens’ capacity for peace; and the relevance of peace education to university education. In peace and conflict research, I have contributed to the epistemological, theoretical and methodological issues. In gender studies, my research has made contributions in the impact of interventions on gender relations. In Applied Dual-Use Biosecurity Education, I have contributed to mainstreaming Biosecurity Education in Peace Education and the Nigerian Educational Curricular. And finally, having identified the abysmally low capacity in methodologies in Africa, I have developed curricular for capacity building training in Humanities and Social Sciences Research.
