This Element revisits the historiographical and archaeological paradigms of Roman rural economies... more This Element revisits the historiographical and archaeological paradigms of Roman rural economies, with a particular focus on the peasant communities of Roman Iberia. Traditionally overshadowed by the dominance of the villa schiavistica model, which centers on large-scale slave-operated agricultural estates, recent interdisciplinary research has unveiled the complexity and persistence of peasant economies. By integrating data from archaeological surveys, rescue excavations, and textual analyses, this volume highlights the significance of dispersed settlements, small-scale farms, and sustainable agrarian strategies that defined the peasant landscape. Case studies from diverse sectors of the Iberian Peninsula demonstrate diverse modes of land use, such as intensive cultivation, crop rotation, and manuring, which contrast with the economic assumptions tied to elite-dominated production models. Furthermore, the author explores Roman peasants' socio-economic structures and adaptive strategies, emphasizing their pivotal role in shaping landscapes. This Element advocates for reexamining Roman peasantries as active and complex agents in ancient history.

This book is the outcome of the analysis and discussion of the links between ritual practices and... more This book is the outcome of the analysis and discussion of the links between ritual practices and some natural spaces, particularly caves, but also rockshelters and stones. The articles gathered in this volume show very diverse contexts and researches, mainly from Bronze Age to Roman times. They offer new perspectives about religious landscapes as well as the role of these spaces in territorial organisation. Several contributions try to reconstruct ritual movements, regulated religious itineraries and social practices, whereas others focus on the circulation inside caves and rockshelters, considering the multi-sensoriality of these natural spaces, linked also with the material offerings. Rock & Ritual volume is another evidence of the complexity and variability of ritual practices linked to natural spaces.

Este cuaderno pretende ser una breve introducción a la arqueología del paisaje, es decir, al análisis espacial de las sociedades del pasado desde la materialidad en el paisaje. Tiene como objetivo introducir a estudiantes de arqueología y disciplinas afines en los conceptos, métodos y perspectivas de estudio histórico-arqueológico del territorio.
El ensayo consta de un primer bloque que presenta los métodos y técnicas empleados en la identificación y análisis arqueológico de los elementos del paisaje, describe las técnicas de prospección asistidas con tecnologías geoespaciales. La segunda se dedica a explicar varios tipos de análisis, desde los más descriptivos hasta la conceptualización simbólica del espacio.
Ignasi Grau Mira es catedrático de Arqueología en la UA. Su principal línea de trabajo se centra en el estudio de la cultura material, el territorio y la dinámica social de época ibérica y romana en el área oriental de la península Ibérica. También centra su investigación en el análisis arqueológico del paisaje en el contexto del Mediterráneo Antiguo, con las aplicaciones de técnicas geoespaciales en arqueología.
This volume aims to present an updated portrait of the Roman countryside in Roman Spain by the co... more This volume aims to present an updated portrait of the Roman countryside in Roman Spain by the comparison of different theoretical orientations and methodological strategies including the discussion of textual and iconographic sources and the analysis of the faunal remains. The archaeology of rural areas of the Roman world has traditionally been focused on the study of villae, both as an architectural model of Roman otium and as the central core of an economic system based on the extensive agricultural exploitation of latifundia. The assimilation of most rural settlements in provincial areas of the Roman Empire with the villa model implies the acceptance of specific ideas, such as the generalization of the slave mode of production, the rupture of the productive capacity of Late Iron Age communities, or the reduction in importance of free peasant labor in the Roman economy of most rural areas. However, in recent decades, as a consequence of the generalized extension of preventive or emergency archaeology and survey projects in most areas of the ancient territories of the Roman Empire, this traditional conception of the Roman countryside articulated around monumental villae is undergoing a thorough revision. New research projects are changing our current perception of the countryside of most parts of the Roman provincial world by assessing the importance of different types of rural settlements. In the last years, we have witnessed the publication of archaeological reports on the excavation of thousands of small rural sites, farms, farmsteads, enclosures, rural agglomerations of diverse nature, etc. One of the main consequences of all this research activity is a vigorous discussion of the paradigm of the slave mode of production as the basis of Roman rural economies in many provincial areas. A similar change in the paradigm is taking place, with some delay, in the archaeology of Roman Spain. After decades of preventive/emergency interventions there is a considerable quantity of unpublished data on this kind of rural settlements. However, unlike the cases of Roman Britain or Gallia Comata, no synthesis or national projects are undertaking the task of systematizing all these data. With the intention of addressing this current situation the present volume discusses the results and methodological strategies of different projects studying peasant settlements in several regions of Roman Spain.

Se aborda el estudio de la secuencia de ocupación del oppidum y su relación con el paisaje ibérico y se analizan algunos aspectos temáticos como la explotación agraria y forestal, las actividades de intercambio, el uso del espacio doméstico, las prácticas rituales y la comensalidad. Se concluye con una síntesis de las dinámicas históricas en las que se enmarca la secuencia del oppidum.

In this contribution we will focus on the characterization of the occupation of medieval and modern times in a place in this valley: Canèssia (L’Orxa, Alicante). The archaeological, historical and ethnographic data allow us to analyse the settlements shapes, the models land management models and social organization of the peasant groups established in Canèssia.

Los recientes estudios arqueológicos desarrollados en la Vall de Perputxent (Alicante) han permitido reconocer los vestigios de diferentes paisajes rurales de montaña que muestran la existencia de una larga secuencia de ocupación y explotación agraria. En esta contribución nos centraremos en la caracterización de la ocupación de época medieval y moderna en un paraje de este valle: Canèssia (L’Orxa, Alicante). Los datos arqueológicos, históricos y etnográficos nos permiten analizar las formas de los asentamientos, los modelos de gestión de la tierra y organización social de los grupos campesinos establecidos en Canèssia.

This study analyses the organisation of the landscapes and socioeconomic and political structures... more This study analyses the organisation of the landscapes and socioeconomic and political structures of the Iberian period in the Valencian Country during the first millennium BCE. Using spatial analysis, it offers an interpretation of the historical dynamics and the evolution of Iberian societies within the urbanisation process of the western Mediterranean. Despite clear evidence of social differentiation, it proposes a general model of the sociopolitical organisation of groups, with both strong social stratification and corporate behaviours.

The aim of this paper is to present the archaeological data that allows us to characterise the ag... more The aim of this paper is to present the archaeological data that allows us to characterise the agrarian practices of Roman farmers through the study of cultivated fields. To undertake this research, we designed an analytical strategy combining spatial analysis, microstratigraphic analysis through soil micromorphology and physicalchemical analyses of bulk soil samples, and archaeobotanical analyses including palynology, phytoliths and geochemical analysis. All this has allowed us to obtain data of interest for the reconstruction of agrarian land use and to establish a methodological basis for developing future research. This high-resolution, multiscalar, and multianalytical approach pursues to characterise these archaeological contexts to singularize intensive agricultural practices developed in terraced field. The creation of this Roman peasant landscape is related to a specific models of socioeconomic organisation of agricultural work based on the household and its workforce as a determining vector in agrarian intensification.
