Narrative Models of Political Violence

Discursive Framings of Human Rights

It examines therefore the relationship between victimhood and political agency and how human rights influence their struggle to overcome the violent conflict of the past through a profound societal transformation. It analyzes victims’ self-narratives, practices and narrative modes established by victims associations to promote victims’ rights and memory activism practices in social media. These narratives will be analysed with the aim of identifying the narrative and thematic modes in play and especially what type of identity they transmit: it is not that of traumatized, self-absorbed victims, but rather that of citizens who assert their right to truth, justice and memory and place their claims in the name and to the benefit of a national community of belonging.

Roberto Savianos culture wars: notes on a literary quote

This success can be understood against the background of the current state of affairs in Italy and as part of a wave of 'postmodern commitment' (Antonello & Mussgnug, 2009) among Italian artists and intellectuals. Interestingly, Saviano has earned the respect of people with different political views, which is a remarkable achievement in a country traditionally plagued by ideological division. This paper investigates the connection of form and content in Saviano's public communication by focusing on one single example that we deem representative of his poetics and politics. In a TV-show by title Dall'inferno alla bellezza [From hell to beauty], Saviano performed a two-hour long monologue focused on stories of resistance against evil. A num...

Although Europe is, and has always been, a heterogeneous entity, many different voices and discourses have for centuries sought to define Europe as a unified and stable cultural subject. The single most important challenge of the Human Sciences in the on-going negotiation of the future of the European project is to assure that the cultural richness, the semiotic ambiguity and historical depth in the conception of what Europe has been, is and might be in the future, is not sacrif...

Some Italian Catholic intellectuals (Anna Maria Chiavacci, Giuseppe Reale) took part in the debate and used Dante to illustrate the essential significance of Christianity in the European culture, thereby involving themselves in this debate. Referring to T.S. Eliot’s famous quote (»the culture of Dante was not of one European country but of Europe«), they claimed that Dante’s work was one of the greatest expressions of a Christian European cultural identity which took form in the Middle Ages and drew impulse from a synthesis of the two great Mediterranean cultural traditions: the Greek-Roman and the Jewish-Christian; a cultural identity they identified tout court with our present ‘European’ or ‘Western’ culture....

But Tabucchi has equally expressed his scepticism about the traditional notion of impegno (social-political commitment) in literature. However this has not prevented him from taking position in his writing on important civil and social-political issues in Italy and Europe. This paper focuses on Tabucchi’s stance about the question of impegno, - particularly as discussed by him in La gastrite di Platone and L’oca al passo – and proposes to locate Tabucchi’s work within the category of ”postmodern impegno” , a category proposed by scholars as P. Antonello, F. Mussgnug and others. Tabucchi doesn’t propose an antagonistic reading of reality, but he places himself within the ambiguity of the postmodern condition and from her he is carrying on his emancipatory discourse. His impegno is more open and fragmented, ethical and post-ideological, aiming to turn literature into an open debate between writer, characters and readers, a debate that doesn’t want to provide answers but to disturb consciences.
