Mayor Phill Stone was up at all hours over the past month representing our city, this time keeping the entire country ‘Philled in’ on the latest Whyalla news! His main focus was the cuttlefish situation, with interest coming from across Australia on how our favourite creatures were faring and whether the diving season would continue. This included a live 6am interview with ABC TV’s National News Breakfast crew in Melbourne, which was broadcast across Australia. Other highlights included meeting both of the potential new owners of the steelworks; announcing the tender for the new foreshore building; and celebrating NAIDOC Week. We’ve reinforced our commitment to supporting the local economy, with more than $1.55 million going to local suppliers over recent months. The latest Quarterly Procurement Report showed that more than 600 purchase orders were spent with local businesses and suppliers. Some of the local businesses benefiting from significant expenditure included A & G D’Orazio & Co (footpath concreting); WGA Whyalla (boat ramp upgrade engineering services and project management); and Rabig Bulk Haulage (airport native vegetation clearance). Mayor Phill Stone said, "whenever possible, we prioritise purchasing goods and services locally while still ensuring we achieve value for money for ratepayers." The tender process is officially open to construct Whyalla’s new Foreshore Centre building! The building will incorporate the Surf Life Saving Club and a kiosk, as well as a café open to the community. This is yet another opportunity for local businesses to get involved with a major council / community project, as the project could represent a major cash injection for local businesses during construction. An incredible effort by Whyalla's own Aussie Energies from Sunrise Christian School has seen them become world champions in the Modified Junior Race at the Hydrogen H2 Grand Prix World Finals in Switzerland 🤩🏆🚘 The team had to design, build and race a hydrogen-powered car, giving them real-world experience in renewable energy technologies. Congratulations, you've done Whyalla proud - we're glad we were able to support you in chasing your dreams 👏👏👏 As well as your amazing personal achievement, you've proven that Whyalla is capable of being world-class, while showcasing the city's net-zero capabilities. It’s been well publicised that the cuttlefish currently haven’t returned to Stony Point in anywhere near recent numbers. While the cause of the low numbers remains a point of debate, the tourism industry, community, government and environmental bodies all agree the current low numbers need to be left undisturbed. To maximise their chances of survival and breeding for future seasons, the State Government will introduce a 90-day exclusion zone from Black Point to Stony Point – the main cuttlefish breeding area – which restricts in-water recreational activities such as snorkelling, diving and vessel anchoring. We feel for those in the industry being impacted by the current downturn and hope the numbers bounce back in future seasons – both for the future of the cuttlefish and the tour operators.
