Case Spotlight: The arrhythmia a routine ECG could have missed A 10-year-old Boxer underwent 24-hour Holter monitoring for a suspected cardiac arrhythmia. The results revealed: • 500+ ventricular premature complexes (VPCs) • Multiple episodes of ventricular tachycardia up to 235 bpm • High-risk R-on-T events associated with sudden cardiac death The findings were highly suspicious for Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC), a serious inherited cardiac disease seen in Boxers. Why Holter monitoring is important: Intermittent arrhythmias don't always appear during a consultation or standard ECG. Why early detection matters in canine heart disease Heart disease is one of the most common health conditions affecting dogs, and many cardiac abnormalities develop silently, with few or no obvious signs until the disease has progressed. Detecting changes in heart rhythm early can make a significant difference. It allows veterinarians to investigate sooner, monitor disease progression, optimise treatment plans and, in some cases, help prevent life-threatening complications. The challenge is that intermittent arrhythmias are often missed during a short consultation or while a pet is in the unfamiliar environment of a veterinary clinic. That's why advances in AI-enabled, at-home cardiac monitoring are so exciting. By allowing dogs to be monitored in their normal environment over extended periods, veterinarians can access more representative ECG data to support earlier, more informed clinical decisions.
