Despite underlying electricity demand in the NEM reaching a new June quarter high of 24,220MW, wholesale electricity prices continued to fall. Average NEM wholesale electricity prices dropped 47 per cent year-on-year to $74/MWh in the June quarter – the lowest June quarter figure since 2020. Victoria recorded the biggest decline, with prices falling 60 per cent to $56/MWh, while South Australia was the only state to experience material price volatility, prompted by a wind drought in June. Seventeen date-centre projects (9GW of capacity) were progressing through the transmission connection process at the end of June, with over 50 per cent of these coming from NSW. #AEMO #NEM #electricityprices #wholesaleprices

About us
Energy is a thought-leading, technology-neutral magazine, developed to help the industry answer some of the critical questions it is currently grappling with: What are the energy sources of the future? How do we provide energy that is clean, affordable and reliable? How do we give customers what they want? How do we contend with disruption in the energy sector? How do we digitise our networks safely, securely and efficiently? In every issue of Energy, we consider these questions and respond with thought-leading and thought-provoking content from some of the best and brightest minds the energy industry has to offer.

"Tasmania had 500MW or more that could have been unlocked if there was Marinus Link." 🔓💡 As heatwaves become more common, the National Electricity Market faces a higher risk of blackouts. During these times, the grid requires diverse and stable supply – something which Marinus Link can support. Marinus Link chief financial and commercial officer Prajit Parameswar discusses this and a lot more in the inaugural episode of the Energy Magazine Podcast. The podcast goes live tomorrow! As the United States and Iran remain in a standoff over the Strait of Hormuz, months of severe disruption – on top of years of supply impacts from the Ukrainian war – have exposed the vulnerability of traditional energy routes. Accordingly, many countries are reassessing their long-term energy strategies with an eye to building more robust domestic liquid fuels sources and supply chains. This includes prioritising alternative fuels. But, according to CSIRO research director – energy technologies Dr Daniel Roberts, supporting and enabling an alternative fuel transition requires a shift in mindset. South Australia recently experienced one of its worst wind droughts in years, with onshore wind farms largely sitting idle for a four-day period, creating a testing period for the local electricity system. As we progressively phase out coal-fired power generation, we will need to call on a diverse energy mix to keep the grid stable. But when the sun isn't shining and onshore winds aren't blowing, where do we turn to for supplies? This is where offshore wind can step in. We sat down with Southerly Ten chief executive officer Charles Rattray to learn more about what its Star of the South project can bring to the National Electricity Market. After being awarded a three-year master construction agreement for EIC works from Rio Tinto in March, GenusPlus Group has been tasked with constructing the major miner's 220kV Millstream substation expansion, which will commence immediately. It follows Genus' acquisition of MPK Kinetic in early July, signalling its entrance into the gas sector. #substation #electricityproject #RioTinto
