Based on the Analysis, thyristor controlled inductors offer a better and more efficient scheme so long as the firing speed of the thyristor are maintained above pi/2. The flexibility in control as well as the switching speed of the thyristor is harnessed here. In conclusion, a practically implementable schematic arrangement of the optimal TCI is also shown.

The primary purpose is usually for rapid control of voltage at weak points in a network. Static VAR Compensators are shunt connected Static generator/absorbers whose outputs are varied so as to control voltage profile of the electric power systems. A MatLab/PSAT model of the Nigerian 48-bus system with three phase fault, with and without SVC is also presented. The simulation results show that with SVC, voltage profile can be improved and power flow controlled in a Power System network.

Flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS) devices aremodern electrical equipments that have gained wide applications in power transmission and grid stability. To improve the power quality and stability through good voltage profile, the role of static var compensators was examined using PowerFactory Digisilent software models. From the results gotten, the voltage profile at the busbar was greatly improved hence proving the efficiency of such device.

The objective is to determine the reliability of the system by comparing the performance of electromechanical and microcontroller-based relays. Electromechanical over-current protective relay on 33kV Itire-Ijesha distribution feeder was analyzed and modeled using MATLAB/Simulink. A numerical relay was proposed and also modeled using the real data of the existing Itire-Ijesha 33kV distribution feeder. While electromechanical relay was simulated as an instantaneous relay, the numerical relay was programmed and simulated as an IEEE moderately inverse definite minimum time (IDMT) relay. The simulation was for single line-to-ground fault, double line-to-ground fault as well as line-to-line fault. Comparing the performances of the two different models, numerical relay tripped in mini-seconds while the electromechanical relay model tripped in seconds. In conclusion, therefore, the numerical relay proved to be superior, smarter, and more reliable than the electromechanical relay.

A comprehensive analysis of what causes low voltages (voltage sags) in the Nigerian power systems were explored. Remedies that could offer long term stability in the Nigerian power systems were proffered based on empirical knowledge and experience. Issues such as Generation-Demand Imbalance and Frequency Oscillations, Ohmic Losses in the Radial Network, and Bottlenecks in Distribution Infrastructure were thoroughly examined. The proffered remedies are very germane.

Poor power quality is analyzed from the view point of a power engineer and this is followed by an enumeration of some issues that cause poor power quality in electricity grid. Factors such as overloading of distribution networks, poor maintenance culture, harmonic distortion from non-linear loads, poor power generation and supply imbalance, etc are discussed. Solutions are proffered based on empirical evidence and technicalities.

The Onitsha-Awka-Enugu transmission line was modeled with Matlab Simulink 2016 using the transmission line pre-fault and daily fault data. Single line to ground (A-G), Double line to ground (AB-G), Line to line (A-B) and three phase (ABC) faults were simulated with the ANN method using Matlab Simulink 2016. However, the ANNshow detail detection and analysis of faults on the line. It was able to detect faults, classify them and locate thefault distance. The output results of the method where compared with the symmetrical component method (the conventional method). The comparison was done based on robustness/simplicity, less error, accuracy and efficiency. ANN was found the best in terms of the above comparative factors.
