Jean-Louis Ska teaches Old Testament, in particular the Pentateuch, at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome since 1983. He is emeritus since January 2016. He published several books in French, English, and Italian. Some of them were translated into Spanish, Portuguese, Croatian, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. His main interests are biblical narratives, biblical law, and the influence of biblical literature on western civilization.

On the other hand, it isalso true that the account contains elements that serve as a corrective to thesometimes simplistic mentality that associates healing with the invocation ofYHWH and the various values of the symbols. Indeed, it is gazing directly atthe serpent that causes death, and a serpent raised up on a standard, that thepeople are healed of the consequences of their rebellion, and that the cause ofdeath becomes the means of healing.

2 Kings 5:1–27 describes the healing of a foreigner, Naaman the Syrian, a high officer of the Kin... more 2 Kings 5:1–27 describes the healing of a foreigner, Naaman the Syrian, a high officer of the King of Damascus, by Elisha, a prophet in Israel. Naaman the Syrian suffers from a kind of skin disease called “leprosy” in the Bible. He thinks that, being rich and powerful, he is in possession of the means to get healed. He has to change his mind and his behaviour, though. He is healed when he agrees to listen to an Israelian maidservant, a slave, to the prophet Elisha, and to his own servants. When he bathes in the Jordan, he symbolically enters the Promised Land because he is healed and, at the same time, he acknowledges that Yhwh is the only Lord of the universe.

En quelques mots, il s'agit de savoir quelle est la valeur documentaire des récits bibliques pour la reconstruction de cette histoire. Les positions vont d'un extrême à l'autre. Toujours est-il qu'il devient de plus en plus difficile d'identifier l'histoire de l'Israël ancien avec les récits bibliques, surtout pour la période qui précède la monarchie.

Scripture is a cantata with multiple voices-this is one of the many ways of describing it-and it ... more Scripture is a cantata with multiple voices-this is one of the many ways of describing it-and it is also on account of this that it is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for theologians, for mystics, but also for philosophers, thinkers, jurists, scholars, and for artists, painters, sculptors, poets, and novelists, even as it is that for today's theatre, film and television directors, too. In this contribution, in answer to the invitation addressed to me, I wish to go over familiar paths in three fields, law, theology, philosophy, to uncover the traces there of Scripture. This cannot be an exhaustive study, but will rather be a series of little "tableaux", a series of snapshots of some details of familiar landscapes.
