"So, which internal trade barriers remain?" If we are serious about building a single Canadian market, this is the question we keep asking all the time. That question drove one of the most consequential policy reports I have had the privilege to work on. You can read it here: https://lnkd.in/gvcGRQim It all started with the policy leadership of Ryan Manucha and Daniel Tisch, ICD.D as they bumped into each other (virtually) and creating a space for collaboration. Then came honest discussions within the OCC’s thoughtful, committed team—first and foremost, the gifted Ali Nasser Virji, but also Shelly Anwyll, Andrea Carmona, Julie Martini, Michael Thede, Ashley Tompkins, Jon Ari, Jessica Wright, PMP. This is when the spirit of John Diefenbaker entered the room and the idea of a One Canada Summit truly gelled: the first private sector-led summit on internal trade. The most important thing for me was to craft something with concrete recommendations, focused on the practical needs of businesses to improve mobility across the economy—in labour, capital, housing, food, and construction. This led to more incredible teamwork with the expert-team at Toronto Region Board of Trade, table moderators, and contributors— CFA Societies Canada, Insurance Bureau of Canada, the PMAC - Portfolio Management Association of Canada, CSA Testing & Certification, SIMA /AMVI, CivicConnect, ApprenticeSearch.com. Thank you to all who contributed, but also to those who provided candid feedback and removed obstacles along the way, making this project truly possible. I am thinking of Roselle Martino, Louie Di Palma, Amy J. Hope, Dominic Roszak, and of course, the wise Giles Gherson. The takeaway for me, re-reading the published recommendations, is that we are more united than we think. But constant attention is needed to maintain that unity and ensure it turns into results. There is often debate about whether Canada is one economy or thirteen. To me, it is obvious. Since John A. Macdonald built the railways, we were inexorably meant to be one economy. But because of our geography, constitutional division of powers, and diverse politics, there is tension and dysfunction within that.
