    There are roughly 3 billion buildings on this planet. Most of them are running on template programming designed to be good enough for any given day of the year, not optimized for this morning, this hour, or this minute. That gap represents about one third of all energy consumed globally, and it is largely untouched. Jean-Simon Venne, CTO and founder of BrainBox AI, joined TechArena's Allyson Klein on In the Arena to discuss how AI is changing that equation, not by building new infrastructure, but by transforming what already exists. BrainBox AI connects to the existing control layer of buildings, pulling data from the systems managing heating, cooling, and ventilation, and replacing reactive, template-based control with real-time predictive decision-making. The results are energy reductions of 20% to 25% on average, with emissions reductions reaching up to 40% in some cases. The reason the numbers are that significant is straightforward: most buildings spend most of their time in conditions where there is real room to modulate. Template programming misses that opportunity entirely. What stood out from Jean-Simon's perspective was the multi-objective nature of the problem. A CFO wants cost reduction. A sustainability officer wants emissions targets met. A facilities manager wants less equipment cycling and fewer maintenance tickets. Building occupants want consistent comfort. BrainBox AI's platform optimizes across all of those objectives simultaneously, finding trade-offs that no human operator could calculate in real time. For technology leaders thinking about sustainability at scale, the practical implication is clear. The most impactful interventions are not always in what gets built next.
