Moment Energy

Moment Energy was built by immigrant families who started with nothing.  My mother moved to Canada when she was 25 not knowing the language, having left her family behind in Guangzhou as they were too poor to put both my mom and her younger brother into college.  So, she was destined to work as a maid at a hotel for the rest of her life, following in my grandma’s footsteps.   She sacrificed her entire life for me as a single mom. Then, she was a dim sum server during the day. Putting herself through community college simultaneously so she could single-handedly lift us out of welfare while we moved from one basement to the next. We think back to a core memory of ours where my mom had to strap a 5 year old Eddy with a high fever in the back of her beat up car, just to Uber college kids to school because we couldn’t afford the next meal. Because we had experienced for decades what people in need go through just to pay their next energy bill, or to put food on the table, I had made it my mission to make sure others don’t have to go through the hardship that we had experienced.  There are a ton of problems in the world. Today we are solving a massive waste and energy crisis, but I am excited to have met genuine founders and innovators that are driven to solve so many global issues. This is the same with all my co-founders. We all have similar stories. And there is something to this nation, where it is truly built on the backs of immigrants. And what we have a lot to be thankful for is that our democratic countries are lands of opportunities that give us a change. We didn't get the privilege to start companies on easy mode as we aren’t founders with millions/billions of dollars. We start with nothing. We start with less than nothing. We start on SUPER-DUPER HARD mode. 

When you train pilots, the very first lesson is that redundancy is not a luxury. It is a baseline requirement. In aviation, you never plan solely for the ideal scenario. You design your entire operational strategy around managing unexpected failures and ensuring a backup system is always ready to step in. This goes to the most frequent maintenance checks on aircraft than any other industry, to pilots needing to train with blinders on with their eyes closed to identify and recover from spins, stalls and spiral dives. Leading Moment Energy requires that exact same mindset. As we accelerate towards full electrification, our power grid cannot afford a single point of failure. True energy resilience means building reliable, secondary systems to anchor our power supply. By upcycling retired EV batteries into commercial storage, we are creating the robust, reliable power that our critical infrastructure requires. In the air, a backup system and relentless training keeps you flying. On the ground, it keeps our society moving forward.

What an incredible few days with Moment Energy 💚 I've worked with the team for the past few years, so it was a true pleasure to spend some time with ALL the people that make this business such a special place to be. Their mission is inspiring and they're truly going places! I was very lucky to be there during World Cup fever, and also partaking in one of their many socials, cycling around the Seawall/Stanley Park 🌳🚴 I was blown away at how hospitable everyone was. To get a true sense of employee experience, I joined their cohort of new starters for their onboarding training. 👀 The last pic gives you a sneek peak of our first in-person podcast recording with Edward Chiang for the The Climate Builders Collective podcast! 📺 It was a special one and a pinch me moment for sure 🙏 Thank you again Moment Energy team, you're the best and I feel blessed to be working with the most humble and passionate people on such a critical mission 💚 A special mention to Eren Flood for being the perfect host!
