  • So what's the deal with Quantum Transduction and why is it so hard to transform quantum signals? Superconducting quantum computers use microwave signals, and fiber networks use telecom signals. Classical hardware has been converting microwave to telecom for years. So why do we need quantum transducers to make superconducting qubits compatible with telecom networks? Let's answer that with a simple analogy. No math, no physics, no jargon. Let's say our quantum microwave signal is a soap bubble. If you catch it, it bursts. If it falls on the ground, it bursts. So you must do everything you can to leave it alone while making sure it keeps floating. That's what's happening inside the superconducting quantum processing unit: an extremely cold, carefully isolated environment where the bubble can be controlled and exists undisturbed. But the telecom network is a harsher environment. Your mission becomes sending your quantum signals across a wall of fire. Your soap bubble will burst every time. You must somehow transform your bubble into something that can resist the flames — let's say a glass bead. Finding the right magic to do that, without ever catching the bubble and bursting it, is exactly the role of the quantum transducer. Now let's add the jargon back in. Catching the bubble is what physicists call measuring the quantum state. And once it bursts, you can never recreate the exact same bubble. This is the no-cloning theorem. A bubble that dries and bursts on its own while left alone illustrates the qubit lifetime. In classical conversion, one could simply catch the bubble, read its shape, and blow a new glass bead. But the original quantum information is lost in that process and the glass bead is worthless for quantum processing. The soap bubble is the microwave photon, at home in the extremely cold environment of a dilution refrigerator. The glass bead is the telecom photon, robust enough to travel through optical fibers at room temperature. And the seemingly impossible act of transforming one into the other, without ever catching it, is quantum transduction. Quantum transducers and interconnects are the building blocks of distributed quantum computing. They are the components that bridge different environment and enable heterogeneous quantum networks, converting fragile quantum signals into a form that can travel the distances needed to cluster quantum processors into quantum datacenters. Let us know in the comment if this analogy helped. Next time someone mentions the fragility of qubits and quantum information, the no-cloning theorem, and other jargon, come back to the bubble analogy.

  • Big congratulations to our co-founder Prof. Mathieu Juan on being named Chair of Quantum Days 2027! We couldn't be prouder to have him leading one of the most anticipated gatherings in the Canadian quantum community, and proud to be building SilQ alongside leaders as active, vocal, and visionary as Mathieu. In his own words: "Sherbrooke is not simply a host city, it is a statement of intent. Few places in the world embody the collaborative spirit needed to accelerate quantum discovery and innovation as naturally as this region. [...] Anchoring the innovation and entrepreneurship dimension of this ecosystem, the Quantum Innovation Zone DistriQ is home to 15+ quantum companies and has established Sherbrooke as one of the rare places where organizations can find a full quantum continuum, from foundational discovery to market, within a single, deeply interconnected community." If you haven't made it to Sherbrooke yet, this is your best excuse. Come see what's cooking.
