THE HAR.GUD COMMENTARY AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO THE HAR-RA=HUBULLU LEXICAL LIST

Published in conjunction with its associated lexical list HAR-ra=hubullu in the series Materialie... more Published in conjunction with its associated lexical list HAR-ra=hubullu in the series Materialien zum Sumerischen Lexikon (MSL), the HAR.GUD commentary has generally been viewed only in its relation to the longer lexical list on which it is based. This study, based on the texts of HAR.GUD presented in MSL, assembles the different recensions of the commentary and presents them individually, allowing for analysis of the text in a way not possible with MSL.

The recensions are compared both with each other and with HAR-ra=hubullu, demonstrating both contact and independent development. Finally, the scholarly environment of Mesopotamia in the first millennium BCE is briefly considered to place the HAR.GUD commentary in its social and historical context.
