🔗 Selected artists for a residency at Swiss Institute in New York (Swiss Institute) Each year, Swiss Institute (SI) hosts two visual artists from Switzerland during a three-month residency in partnership with Pro Helvetia. Residents are provided with an apartment a few blocks away from Swiss Institute’s galleries in the heart of the East Village. Through monthly meetings with the curatorial team, artists can consult on various aspects of their practice, conduct research, and develop new work. With Swiss Institute serving as a liaison between the artist and the city’s cultural scene, residents are given the opportunity to live, learn and work in an independent and generative environment. What can a river’s flow reveal about the transformations within a society? How do minerals teach us about states of presence? In what way could a plant reveal traces of family memories? These are some of the questions raised by projects supported by Pro Helvetia. Carried out in a variety of formats and on a range of themes, they examine the different elements surrounding us as agents of knowledge, transformation, and connection. They regard humans not as mere observers of this ecosystem, rather as an inherent element of the fabric we call nature. 📷 credits: 1&2: Nile silt fragments resting in the sand, Studio Eidola’s residency project in Egypt. 3: Céline Manz brought to light stories embedded in the landscape in Murmurs of the Pearl. 📷 Detail of the installation Mermaid Forensics at Guangdong Times Museum in Guangzhou in May 2026, as part of Murmurs of the Pearl © Céline Manz. 4: In rīḥa, Hichem Merouche analysed a plant carrying intimate bonds. 📷 Hichem Merouche’s work with plant essences and fragrances. 5: Studio Eidola investigated how clay shapes Egyptian society in Is the Dam High Enough? 📷 Jonas Kissling and Denizay Apusoglu pouring of prototypes during their residency project in Egypt. 6: With Metabolic Cosmopolitics, Francesca Brusa researched environmental art practices linked to oralitures. 📷 A bamboo tribute to elephants in Bhalla, symbolising their connection with local communities. 7: Lessons from birds and collective memories gave form to Dorothy Wong Ka Chung and Benjamin Ryser’s Rockfall and Birdsong. 📷 Video-sound installation shot.
