The aim is to show, in a reasonable number of pages, that Book X is one of the simplest yet substantial self-contained pieces of Greek mathematics, and to explain what are the keystone theorems, strategies, and tools of the construction. The exposition will be a useful guide to anyone interested in having a quick, overall and informed glance at Book X, and also to anyone teaching Book X in a university classroom.

All'ombra di Tolomeo, e in primis delle sue Tavole Facili , si svilupparono i due luoghi classici di ri essione e sistematizzazione cronologica: le tavole astronomico-cronologiche (che nei manoscritti sono normalmente presentate insieme) e le piccole enciclopedie cronologiche comunemente denominate 'Computi pasquali'. The article presents a critical edition, with a translation and an introduction, of the "refutati... more The article presents a critical edition, with a translation and an introduction, of the "refutation" of chapters 14-16 of Book III of Ptolemy's Harmonica, which were not handed down in the manuscript tradition. Chapters 14 and 15 were added in Byzantine times, the origin of chapter 16 is uncertain. The "refutation" was authored by the 14 th-century scholar and polemicist Barlaam of Seminara, one of the two leading characters in the Palamite and hesychast controversies. In this way, the last item of Barlaam's scientific writings can now be read in a critical edition. The present edition explains in detail the background of Barlaam's work, describes all of its manuscript witnesses, and reconstructs a stemma codicum.

Some issues regarding editorial techniques and stemmatic theory are raised and discussed by using... more Some issues regarding editorial techniques and stemmatic theory are raised and discussed by using the textual tradition of Greek and Byzantine technical treatises as sources for examples and case-studies. I shall show that the stemmatic method is both perfectly sound and elastic enough to be able to cope with most textual traditions of technical texts.

Ce texte de Rhabdas, qui demeurait inédit, est ici mis en contexte, présenté en édition critique, traduit et commenté.
